After successful tests of their home automation system last summer in Dallas and Atlanta, AT&T recently announced the official release of their Digital Life Home Automation System. The service is being made available in fifteen markets this quarter with plans to expand to 50 markets by the end of the year. AT&T plans to offer homeowners utility, flexibility, and affordability in a home automation package.

The new service will be available in certain metropolitan areas of New Jersey and New York and St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia, Riverside, Austin, Houston, Boulder, Miami, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Dallas. With the announcement of it’s entry into the home automation market, AT&T will be competing directly with home automation system currently marketed by Verizon and Motorola. Both systems are based on the popular Z-Wave technology and have many similarities. One major difference, however, is that Digital Life Home Security and Home Automation Services from At&T do not require a homeowner to subscribe to an AT&T digital plan in order to have the system installed.

How Can Home Automation Make Life Easier?

A home automation system allows the homeowner varying levels of control over the systems in your home, from lighting to sprinkler systems. Home automation systems are commonly used to control:

  • lights
  • door locks
  • garage doors
  • HVAC systems
  • home entertainment systems
  • security and monitoring systems
  • communications systems

Home automation systems allow you to control any or all of these systems remotely. Depending on the service, these adjustments can be made from anywhere in the world on a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or any internet connected device. Some systems even offer the option of watching live video feeds from installed cameras. Imagine if you no longer had to wait at home for an appliance service call. You could see the technician when he rings the doorbell, unlock the door, communicate with the technician while the work is being done, and monitor the technician’s activities while inside your house all while sitting in your office or perhaps even while on vacation.

What Does the Digital Life Service Offer Homeowners?

Because of it’s available levels of customization, the Digital Life service offers homeowners a complete menu of home security and automation options. The basic Simple Security Package includes an indoor siren, 24/7 monitoring, recessed door and window sensors, a key chain remote, a wireless key pad and 24 hour battery backup and costs $29.99 a month with a $150 installation. Homeowners can choose from a variety of upgrades and improvements to make this a truly unique and adaptable system. For a few dollars more a month, the Smart Security plan offers the added security of the of a glass break sensor, smoke sensor, carbon monoxide sensor, and a motion sensor for a $10 additional monthly charge and $250 installation. Additional upgrades such as cameras and a water detection and energy management package are also available for between five and ten dollars more per month plus the cost of installation. Keep in mind, however, that you do not need to have an existing home digital service contract, which can cost from $70-$100 a month in addition to the automation package.

AT&T’s much anticipated introduction of the Digital Life Home Security and Home Automation System into the general market makes affordable home automation options available to homeowners. Bypassing the need for homeowners to have an existing digital plan, this service can be tailored to the needs of young individuals, young families, and older individuals. Affordable home automation may be headed your way. Stay informed to find out when this service will be available in your area.
