The modern smart home for the user has been a frustrating fragmented experience.

Right now, the consumer is forced to “pick sides” whether that be with  Lowes’ Iris, Quirky Wink or Belkin WeMo. Customers have had to sacrifice other products because of compatibility issues.

Screen Shot 2014-09-03 at 9.53.27 AMThe potential solution may be in IFTTT (If This Then That), which is a free service that gives websites, apps, and devices a way to interact with each other.

Some major brands including Nest, Quirky, and Belkin are already making products compatible with IFTTT. Now the giant ADT is stepping into the cloud and developing an IFTTT channel for its Pulse home automation system.

IFTTT lets the user create ‘recipes’ with the home system for every day use. Some examples for demo are:

  • If a wearable changes from “sleep” to “awake” then disarm the ADT Pulse.
  • If a phone alarm goes off at 7:00am, then turn on the ADT Pulse coffee machine.
  • If a users texts “DogDoor”, then unlock the ADT Pulse connect back door.
  • If the doorbell rings, then send a real-time video clip of the front door.
  • And lastly, if the sun sets, then turn on ADT Pulse connected outdoor lights.

So, whats the catch?

Making Pulse compatible with IFTTT means adding lots of extra cloud connections, which means the threat of hacking goes up.

That is a big concern for a system that is made for security. ADT told CNET that it will move slowly to ensure their high standard of security.

The presence of ADT Pulse with IFTTT may lure other third party gadgets like Dropcam and Kwikset Kevo to create their own IFTTT channels.

The smart home wars are just beginning, it should be fun to watch.
