Where does all that information go that your smart home collects about you and how you live?

The answer is simple. The cloud.

Screen Shot 2014-09-24 at 2.12.11 PMVivint is announcing its acquisition of consumer focused cloud storage start-up Space Monkey.

Space Monkey’s cloud is a little different than what most are used to. Space Monkey puts the date on a networked hard drive in the consumers home. It is not just a regular old hard drive, it links up to all other Space Monkey hard drives to become a “distributed cloud.” This way if your hard drive ever breaks down your files are still backed up on the thousands of other Space Monkey drives around the world.

This eliminates the need and cost of maintaining an energy sucking server farm. This makes the service cheaper. Space Monkey costs $200 for the hard drive and then $50 per year for 1 terabyte of storage. Others cost about $100 a year for the same 1 terabyte of storage.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how storing data fits into the smart home,” said co-founder Clint Gordon-Carroll. “Think about storing all the video captured on security cameras.”

“As we move into the smart home, we’re suddenly producing prodigious amounts of data,” said Space Monkey co-founder Alen Peacock. “The Space Monkey technology can really augment the smart home.”
