Having a functioning home security system in place has never been more important. According to the FBI, well over 8 million property-based crimes (e.g., break-ins, vandalism, thefts, etc.) took place in 2013, costing an estimated $16.6 billion in losses and damages. Thankfully, home security companies are taking steps to address this problem. Here are our picks for the top 5 home security companies of 2015.

To help explain why these companies are the best 2015 has to offer, we’ve assigned two scores to each company – our score, and the user score.

What Is “Our Score”?

Untitled design (71)Here at BestCompany.com, we rank every home security company on the same 9-Point Ranking Criteria, identified as “Our Score,” with the highest possible score being a 10. Companies are evaluated on price, contract length, technology, and more.

What Is the “User Score”?

Untitled design (72)However, no “expert” opinion of any company can provide as complete a picture of a company as the actual customer experience can. This is why we also take the “User Score” into consideration. This score is calculated by taking the average of all the customer review scores posted on our site. Like “Our Score,” the “User Score” has a highest possible score of 10.

5. ADT

Our Score

While ADT’s monthly price range of $28.9 to $57.99 and 36-month contract length are higher than some of its competitors, the company has been around for over 100 years for a reason. ADT ranks high for technology, including a free smart phone app, remote video monitoring, as well as remote lock/unlock door controls. And as ADT is one of the most experienced companies in the industry, its online resource center is second to none.

User Score

However, ADT has not always produced the most satisfied customers. Below is a review you might typically see about ADT Home Security:

4. Vivint

(Check out our review on Vivint here!)

vivint score

Our Score

As one of the largest home automation/security companies in the United States, Vivint Home Security provides customers with a state-of-the-art home security experience, complete with home alerts, two-way communication with Vivint representatives, and up to the minute monitoring services; however, Vivint is also very expensive, sometimes reaching the $70 range for its monthly fees. It’s contract lengths are also more extensive than other home security companies, and can last up to 60 months.

User Score

Like ADT, Vivint has also received mixed customer reviews. While customers tend to be pleased with their equipment, they are less so with the sales and installation processes:

3. Protection 1

(Check out our review on Protection 1 here!)

Our Score

What is great about Protection 1 is 1) the company charges no up-front costs, and 2) it provides both DIY and professionally installed systems. These qualities suggest that Protection 1 aims to address the home security needs of customers of nearly every budget and level of expertise. It’s packages also include $1,000 deductible protection as well as up to 20% off homeowners insurance.

User Score

Protection 1 fairs slightly better among its customers than either Vivint or ADT; however, while the company demonstrates excellent service, it also lacks consistency:

2. Frontpoint

(Check out our review on Frontpoint Security Here!)

Our Score

As home security companies go, Frontpoint checks all the boxes for what you would look for in a great company: it has received an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and has several patented technologies to make sure your home is 100% safe, even when you’re not around. Frontpoint also has a series of wireless features, meaning even the most novice do-it-yourselfer can easily install Frontpoint’s top-notch surveillance systems.

User Score

Frontpoint’s customers generally agree it’s a great company. Their customer service and alarm response teams will reach out immediately in case of an emergency:

1. Protect America

(Check out our review on Protect America here!)

Our Score

Coming in at number one is Protect America. By far the least expensive home security system on this list (exceeding no more than $19.99 with no upfront costs), Protect America also boasts some of the fastest and most advanced home security technology on the market. Protect America is compatible with other systems, meaning you can still use Protect America’s live monitoring with any pre-existing security system in your home.

User Score

Customers have repeated expressed satisfaction for Protect America’s helpful customer service, something that sets this company apart from the rest of the field:
