Home Security 101 Tips

You may already know a lot about home security, but there's always so much more you'd never even think of. See what tips here you never even thought of!

  • Get a dog. And so what if you're the one who ends up walking it (good exercise!) and feeding it, etc. That dog could save your life one day. Even a little "yipper" can frighten off a burglar who doesn't want attention.
  • Keeping to yourself may seem like a good security measure, but actually, you should get to know your neighbors. They'll then more likely be aware of any suspicious activity around your property. The nosy neighbor who approaches a burglar rivals the barking dog as a deterrent.
  • Outdoor appearance. A well-manicured home looks frequently occupied. Don't let grass overgrow and don't allow brush to create hiding spaces for intruders.
  • Home security system. This need not be the same kind that a wealthy person uses; a simple device that shouts if an intruder enters your home is quite affordable.
  • Don't leave empty labeled boxes of expensive items out on the curb for trash pickup, as these tell burglars your house is worth breaking into.
  • Don't allow dark pockets on your house's exterior. There should be lights near all possible entry points. Ideally, use motion detecting lights.
  • Ignore unsolicited "help" at your doorstep.
  • Get background checks on service people before arranging for them to come inside.
  • Prior to letting service people into your house, hide valuables and conceal important documents. After they leave, check all windows to see if any have been unlocked (for the service person's future entry as a burglar).
  • Keep all doors and windows locked at all times.
  • Don't let any strangers in to use the phone or have a drink of water no matter how banged up they look. If they're well enough to approach your home and make a request, then they're well enough to wait outside while you call 9-1-1.
