'Tis the season to visit family or escape the cold for a warm paradise.

Before you go, posting on social media all about your incredible vacation plans you may want to think twice. The FBI 2012 crime report states that we can expect one in every thirty six homes in the US to be burglarized, that is one home every 14.6 seconds.

Here are a few tips to help keep your home safe while you are away enjoying the Holiday:

1. Maintain your garage:

Make sure the door from your garage to your home is locked. Also make sure any door leading into the garage is locked. If you can lock your garage door do it. Park all your cars in your garage to keep them safe while you are lying on the beach.

2. Put stuff away:

Leaving objects that can be used to aid in stealing should not be left in plain sight. For instance, if you live in a two story home do not leave a ladder in the front yard. Don't leave any tools or yard equipment laying around either. Put your trash cans away, do not leave them at the curb and keep your boxes of electronics and toys in the trash. These are dead give a ways to all the great stuff Santa left at your house.

3.Posting on Social Media:

Posting your vacations pictures while you are gone on vacation is telling the world that you are not at home and wont be for some time. Leaving newspapers or mail piling up in the driveway or mailbox is also a bad idea. Ask a neighbor to pick up your newspapers and mail.

4. Keep your home lit:

Using light timers inside and out is a great way to ward off would be thieves.

5. Pick an Alarm System that works for you:

When it comes to picking an alarm system, it is so important to pick one with your daily life in mind. Look at your home and determine how many windows and doors you will need to protect.

6. Stop hiding a key:

Many homeowners keep an extra key under the door mat, inside the plant potter or some other close and convenient spot. Stop it! These are the first places a would be burglar looks. Make sure your alarm code and your garage door code are not your address or have anything to do with your home or location.
