ADT offers professionally installed home security systems in 40 U.S. states. They do not offer home security in the following US states: Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire. Almost all equipment needs to be purchased upfront. Monthly monitoring fees start at $27.99 for basic home security, $52.99 to use the ADT app, and $58.99 for video monitoring.

Pros

Video Surveillance Option

ADT has a video plan option where for $58.99 per month, you get the standard security systems package along with a camera that includes video surveillance features that you can monitor through the ADT mobile app. Most home security service providers still do not offer video surveillance as a service. So if this is an important feature to you, you'll want to consider ADT.

ADT Mobile App

With the ADT app, you can disarm and arm your ADT home security system, receive email and text message alarm notifications, and control your home's smart devices like smart locks and motion sensors. According to the ADT home security systems website, the ADT app uses innovative Z-Wave technology.

ADT Guarantees

ADT offers a six-month money-back guarantee on installation and monitoring if you are unhappy with your current home security system. Additionally, according to the company's website, ADT offers a theft protection guarantee. If your home has a burglary while your ADT system is set, ADT will give you up to $500 towards your insurance deductible.

Cons

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Standard monitoring plans for new customers start at $27.99 for their traditional package and goes up to $58.99 for video monitoring. Those interested in the ADT mobile app or an outdoor/indoor camera, will need to pay more for the more comprehensive home security packages. The cost could end up being higher than other leading home security system providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

Undisclosed Information

Unlike other home security companies, like Protect America, ADT does not disclose how much added on equipment is. While you can see that the company offers three packages, it's difficult to see the distinctions and what equipment is offered in each package.

Negative ADT Home Security Reviews

On BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, ADT customer rate the company at 1.2 out of 10. Common complaints of ADT customers include sales and installation reps failing to show up to scheduled appointments, long wait times, additional charges, and high cancellation fees.

We have received over 1,500 negative ADT reviews from real customers. We never scrub reviews to make companies appear a certain way to potential buyers and negative reviews cannot be paid off by the company.

Our Recommendation

ADT offers a video surveillance option, a helpful mobile app, a money-back guarantee, and a theft protection guarantee. Additionally, ADT offers a variety of high-tech products with their monitoring service: digital control panel, cameras, video doorbells, smart locks, motion detectors, and more. However, when you look at the customer reviews left for ADT, the good is outweighed by contract and customer service issues.

Customers are charged high monthly fees for ADT security services and are usually locked into a long-term contract. Also, there have been a plethora of negative customer reviews regarding ADT customer service and professional installation.

At this time, we do not recommend ADT for home security because of their negative reviews and their undisclosed information. We recommend choosing a home security company that discloses pricing and package information. Check out our top companies here.

Below is the message I left on ADT's facebook page. ANYONE reading my review: do not use ADT! I have never been CHEATED, ENTRAPPED, TREATED in the way you are treating me and my family. We signed up a year ago. We explicitly and multiple times asked what happens if we must relocate ABROAD due to JOB transfer. We were told that if ADT cannot provide services at our new location (like moving abroad), we will not be held to the early termination fee and penalties. NOW that my husband got a contract (copy was submitted), the company first tried to tell us that the no-penalty rule applies only to the military. When I pointed out that "military only" was NEVER mentioned, the story changed to one of the MOST INSANE arguments: that it is my husband's contract and not mine, and since I signed up for ADT, we are still in breach of contract (never mind NO ONE mentioned to me that my husband should be on the account and not me - we are MARRIED!!!). When I offered to keep services at our new home, I was told that ADT does not service Germany. SO... your company is telling me that you cannot provide services that you demand I pay for?!?!?!? I am not talking morality here. I am talking FRAUD. You are a terrible company! You do not care about your clients. Your logic is insane: my husband gets the transfer, but I am liable because I do not have a job in our new location?!!! You sent me on a calling chase, resulting me in speaking to nearly 10 different people in various departments over the course of 50 minutes. Your lack of logic and consideration for people is disappointing and enraging. Not to mention that your logic is entrapment of clients and fraud (yes, I am mentioning the word again). I hope to make sure no other family falls for your deception. Rest assured I will continue fighting.

I had my old ADT system upgraded last week. The upgrade included three wireless security cameras. The picture quality of these cameras is horrid. Pixelation, unfocused, and the inability to clearly see faces. One service tech said it was due to a poor wireless signal. This is simply not true as I own a wireless Nest camera which uses the same wireless system and the Nest provides a crystal clear picture. The lead tech for my area told me to just return the cameras if I wasn't happy with the quality. I called up ADT customer service today to see what they could do. The representative was totally dismissive. Again I was told that my only option was to have the cameras removed. ADT outright refused to lower my monitoring cost for the inferior cameras. They also refused to provide me with a better camera when one comes out unless I paid for the new cameras. My wireless is fine, the ADT cameras are pitiful. After being an ADT customer for almost thirty years I am seriously considering having the entire system removed and going to a different security company. Nothing but rudeness, dismissiveness, and a run around from the technical, sales and customer support departments. This is unacceptable for a company with over 140 years in the business.

I have been a customer since 2016 until recently and I have to say ADT has been very slacking in their service. One time I received call that the alarm of my house sounded off when I was away. The representative actually told me that he tried to call the police but could not get a hold and told me the continue to call the police until someone pick up. Why do I have to pay you big buck each month so that I have to call the police myself?!!! A few year until recently, I noticed a slight increase in my bill of $6. The sale person set up the system for me promised me that the bill will never increase. I called and they were able to reduce it. The fact that they increased it then reduce it back when being called is sketchy business practice. Does that mean if I didn't make the call my bill might go up again in a couple months/years? Fast forward until a couple months from now, I changed to another security service. In a way to persuade me to stay, they said they can lower my bill to 29.99 per month from 57.73. This means I was overcharged so much for the entire time I stayed with them? Super Sketchy. Now about the cancellation part, I called to cancel on 5/14. They said there is a 30 days cancellation policy so I'm still being charged for the month of June, but they charged the wrong amount. So I called 2 more times and was ensured that the credit amount will be refunded back to my credit card. I waited and waited and nothing came, so I call again for the fourth times. The two ladies account manager and billing department (Whitney) were actually able to help me understand the billing part and explained that they have to initiate a Refund Request (they promised to send me a check this time), which the previous 3 representatives never did. They also helped remove the Autopay from my account so that I don't get auto-charged again in the future months since my service is already cancelled, another thing the other representatives never did. Dysfunctional business process!!! How many time a customer needs to call to get a simple request done?!!! Now that I'm gone, I will never go back. I will also advise all the people I know to never deal any business with ADT.

I had ADT installed over 5 years ago I used it for less than 2 years and I cancelled it. Customer service asked me if I would like to keep it open for $4.95 a month in case I change my mind or decide to rent the house out which I almost did. My bank statements showed a $5 fee each month for some time and then I noticed 2 years ago they'd started charging me $56.95 a month again! And I do realize this is a lot my fault for not checking my bank statements, but I called and told them what they had been doing and that I needed a refund and they agreed. I told them just to completely stop my account and close it. As of last month they are still taking out $56.95 a month and I have not used their equipment I've not used anything and they know that. AT&T did this to me to the tune of around $10,000. I am so upset and I don't have time to fight these stupid battles I'm fighting for my life right now with cancer. I'm on a fixed income and I'm trying to pay my way back and forth to Houston from Oklahoma to MD Anderson hospital and it's ridiculous have to deal with this crap. And if I had the money back that they owed me it would make these trips a little bit less painful financially. Actually it would help a lot. What to do?

We had ADT security installed in our home but last year had a break-in. Turns out the alarm on that window was not working. I called ADT to replace the damaged screen and found out several screens were not working. You can imagine how upset I was to find out my home was not protected (even though I was paying my monthly ADT bill). So I cancelled the service. The young man who originally sold me ADT told me not to worry, he would take care of ending the contract. But he never did and I continued to be billed. I would call him and remind him to take care of it but he never did. So I called the main ADT number and was told it would be taken care of, but it never was. Recently, I received a letter from a collection agency for close to $1000! Again, I called ADT and was told someone would call me. No one ever did. Today, I called ADT again and was told there is nothing they can do because the bill has already been sent to collections. Excuse me? I was let down AT EVERY STEP OF THE WAY by ADT. I would never recommend this company to anyone. They really just don't care.

I have been a customer of ADT for 20 years. I have a windows sensor that began to fail simply due to settling of the house. I called to get it serviced and ADT stated that I could add an additional service contract to my monthly bill for an additional $32.00 per month and then it would cost me an additional $80.00 for the technician to come out and move the sensor closer to the window. Or, I could pay $94.00 for the first 30 minutes and an additional $34.00 dollars per 15 minutes that the technician was on-site. So, I could spend a couple hundred dollars for the technician to move my sensor closer to the window, or replace it, or I could upgrade my system for less money but sign up for another contract. ADT doesn't care about their customers. You are just a number to them and once they have you, they don't care to provide support to you any longer.

The technicians came by to installed all cameras and said I would be getting to burglar alarm key pad for free. So he installed it and left. Got home to read the paperwork and ADT installed 4 indoor cameras without audio which will not be monitored by ADT (after talking to someone else in customer service) just the door. I told customer service that is not the door I needed monitored, it’s the cameras.. This is absurd and having ADT pick up all their equipment.

They don't tell you that you need to have a maintenance plan for them to help fix any issues you have with the system and want to charge an extreme amount per hour to help you fix a simple issue. When you ask about the maintenance plan they don't give you any information about it. We stuck it out and stayed with them despite this issue. Then you need to add additional services and want someone to come out and help you make sure you have the right equipment but they supposedly don't have anyone local to help so you have to order it and hope it's the right thing. Finally found a good alarm company that wants to help us. So we contact them to cancel even with being out of contract they say we have to give them 30 days notice just to keep our money we pre paid which was ridiculous monthly as it was over $85 a month. But they want to threaten you that your equipment will not longer work etc etc. Guess what my equipment works fine because I own it and have a good company now. Stay far far away!!

I sold my house after a year of having ADT. ADT is telling me that my contract states I must complete the obligation some $800+. The installation guy was horrible. He began installing without going through the packages, and signed me up for 3 years of service without explaining. They are a consumers worst nightmare. The home has been sold to new owners. There should be a final close out total, possibly the balance on the equipment costs only. That is stealing. You want me to pay for a service that I won't be getting. Even cell phone companies that place you under contract will only make you responsible for a cut off fee and the balance of your equipment. This is completely ridiculous. Please do not use these people. For a large company they are thieves.

Worst company Ever!!!!!! For all of you who as a Pulse System!!! Please read. When I ordered a system I didn't get what I ordered. They put a substitute in in it place, a Pulse which has a serious security flaw built in. The ADT pulse system has a serious arming flaw the general public is probably unaware of which I accidently discovered 3 months after the system were installed. The Pulse system is engineered, built and programmed to alarm in two modes; Stay or Away. When arming the system using the Pulse smartphone app it does not arm the system to instantaneously trigger an alarm if armed "Stay" there is ~45-60 sec delay in alarm triggering. After bringing this to the attention of ADT and after several days of phone calls and visits with ADT tech support, sales, and customer service personnel and to my dissatisfaction they admitted that using the smartphone app to arm the in "Stay mode" does not have a "no delay" alarm function and cannot be independently programmed to do so if a zone is breached. What more alarming (sic) is ADT doesn’t have a fix for this issue on the Pulse and the only fix is the homeowner is to arm the system from the secondary keypad that comes with the system which defeats the purpose of the smartphone app. The problem with this issue is the customer is not made aware of this upfront during sales or installation. So, what does this means to the average customer; YOUR HOME AND FAMILY IS NOT SECURE IN THE "Stay Mode" using the smartphone app! After discovering this flaw, I tried to get them to install a system that was comparable to what I ordered initially they contend they did not have anything to offer because any other system of comparable specs has the same problem. Then I tried to invoke their 6-month customer satisfaction guarantee and they would not honor it, thus telling me I would incur 75% of the remaining contract cost.

He said I was incapable of deciding weather we would buy his products and services. I told him I could make those decisions with or without my wife. Then he said I wasn’t able to decide in a very nasty tone. I asked what right he had to question my ability to make decisions and again his reply was unbelievably harsh. I then told him to leave my property ASAP. His name is Roger so beware if ADT sends him to your house. He made sure we knew he drove one and a half hours to get to my home just to waste his time and gas that he would NOT get back....I should've called the cops but didn't think of That so I called my father and he came over and the guy still hadn't left when my father left.... They say it's NO pressure but by all means they will put every ounce of issue they can on YOU to force you to feel so bad that you get their services to the point her lied to me on so many levels when saying it was a 3 day money back her could call his "boss" to extend that policy but he wasn't allowed to and tried to make me pay $507/month plus $58.99/month for 4 months then $58.99/month after THAT for equipment I never asked for or wanted.... I'm writing the review I'm very unhappy with ADT at this point, I just got this installed at my house and last night the system had gone off. Because the didn't hook the door sensor up right. So my family was thinking someone had came in the back door. Not only didn't ADT not call to make sure everything was okay the never ever set the cops, I had to call 911. They told me because I entered the code the assume everything was okay. What since does that make what if someone had a gun to my head and I had to enter my code to save my family life? how would they know I was okay if they didn't call??? Now there telling me that can't come out until tomorrow to fix the problems so I have to have that sensor on bypass. I'm completely not happy with ADT; and nor do I feel safe with this company at this point. They did not tell us that we had to keep the service for x amount of months, it was all recorded when they lowered it so I told them to find the recording where they stated that & that, was agreed to, which they never have.. They went & auto debited our account for the amount they say we owed. Fortunately the bank caught it & got our money back from them, now they are turning it into collections, which we are both on social security & don't have it pay them. We were with them for over 10 years & thought they were a good company, but will never trust them again or give them authorization to debt our account. This company has a classic bait and switch business model. When we called ADT to have a system installed they sent their authorized representative Defenders to install our system. We wanted to protect two homes and an outbuilding on the same property. We were originally told that this would require two systems with a separate panel for both houses. The outbuilding was to be part of one house’s system. After 4 days (not exaggerating) it was determined that the outbuilding was too far from either house and so it needed its own system for protection. We agreed to the additional cost and the third panel was installed. From the first conversation when we scheduled the installation we were assured my account would be consolidated for billing purposes regardless of the number of physical locations on my property or the number of addresses covered under the account. I also was assured that a manual billing was possible and the only thing they would hit my charge account for was the original installation. I will spare you the details of the initial billing issues that took months to straighten out but it suffices to say that if you start out with a list of equipment that doesn’t work and you move it to another “location/panel”, don’t expect them to be able to charge one location and credit the other. They have the charges down pat – the credits not so much. But back to the current issue, for some reason they seem totally incapable of combining the systems like they told me they could do. As a warning to any business out doing research – if you have multiple physical locations you too will have this problem. They charged my credit card (unauthorized) $58.99 on May 10th that is not reflected on anywhere on my account. The description says “ADT-Protect your home”. I have talked to them about this and received assurances they would investigate and either tell me why I owed it or they would credit my account. I have heard nothing from them and today I found and additional charge (unauthorized) of $58.99 on June 10th that is also not reflected in my account. I called them again today and they are again supposed to call me back since they cannot see any charges to my card on their system. Also, the May 10th is definitely a duplicate billing and I can only assume that given a couple of days I will receive another charge for $58.99 elsewhere on this same location. The accounting is a mess and last week I received notification that one location was going to stay with Defenders as my provider while the other locations are transferring to ADT. Exactly how do they intend to accomplish that if it’s actually one account? And exactly why is ADT not accepting one of the locations? Is it because I have complained? My husband and I are both in our seventies and I am beginning to believe that their lack of responsiveness is indeed a reflection of what they can get away with seniors as their clients. I wonder how many other seniors have similar complaints about ADT. I doubt that I am the only one. We had ADT years ago for our security provider but this is not the same company. I am thoroughly disgusted with this company and their sales practices.

Keep calling until you get a rep that will cancel it immediately. Don't fall for the certified mail letter requirement or special form. Cost me six months of service costs for protecting an empty space because of the run around. Lying unethical and unprofessional. Someday the lawyer sharks will do a class action lawsuit against ADT.

Let me start by saying ADT is one of the most well known security providers but understand this, you are literally just paying for a name. Their sale tactics are very misinformed to say the least, they will typically quote you for the basic package they offer even after you inform them of what you want then they show up and that quote is nothing like what it sounded like over the phone. Customer service is ridiculous, very unprofessional and make you question how they’re even still in business. Their 36 month service contract “IS NOT” an industry standard (that in and of itself is the BIGGEST LIE they tell). They’re plenty of other companies that do make you sign a contract agreement but not just for servicing (typically lock you in unless you pay off your equipment in full). Even after you own all of your equipment outright (which they only offer you a maximum of 3 months to pay for), they still lock you in a service contract. If you happen to want to cancel your service for the sake of relocation or even personal preference, you have to pay 75% of what your monthly charges are x the remaining length of your contract term. DO NOT get the ADT pulse package unless you’re planning on installing cameras because you’ll be paying a 20 dollar markup on fees just to be able to arm/disarm your system on your phone. They have 3rd party installation companies that provide misinforming information so whatever you do read that ridiculously long contract you sign from beginning to end. All in all, I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND NOR OWN ANOTHER ADT SECURITY SYSTEM AGAIN!!!

Absolute garbage. The installation technician completely messed up the entire job. False alarms, equipment failures and damage to my property. It's been over 2 months and my system still doesn't function. Numerous technical service appointments. Sometimes they show up sometimes they don't. Trapped in a contract. I want to save other people the experience of contacting ADT. Don't do it.

ADT have access to the main codes of the alarm system, and will not provide the codes to the consumer. If you are not happy with the product you may cancel with full refund with in 30 day, ADT did not refund anything

If you appreciate efficient, prompt and old school quality customer service, ADT is definitely NOT the security provider for you. Coordination between dispatch and technicians is totally nonexistent. Whomever happens to be announced as scheduled to be your visiting technician is unrelated to whom actually shows up, if they show up at all. Be forewarned! Look elsewhere for your home or office protection vendor - or you are very likely to be enormously disappointed.

I will NEVER use ADT again. When I signed up for services, the rep who installed put a large hole in my wall that they did not fix. He also did not go over the contract in detail therefore I was unaware of a 3 year (36 month) term with a cancelation fee when I had to cancel services. This company gets no points from me. Do not use them unless you want to make five your money away!!!

I've learned the hard way, as many have and continue to do. I'm reading this isn't with just ADT but with all wireless wifi security systems in general. Lots of material on the internet on 'spoofing-jamming' wireless home security systems. My home system is basically maxed out with cameras and various sensors - monthly rate is nearly $65 per month. Sadly, these systems are easily 'spoofed', meaning cameras can be stopped from recording activity with range, while door/window sensors can be manipulated into thinking they are 'closed' when dwelling entry is actually underway, thereby not notifying the monitoring center that an intrusion is taking place. From the monitoring/tech center, everything will appear to be 'quiet' with no activity. The device needed (SDR or Software Defined Radio) can be bought off of eBay and/orAmazon for less than $50, can be programmed by the average highschooler who can access the frequencies (can usually be found on the internet) the security vendor is using. The two most common devices are: 1. One looks like a fat USB memory stick that is mostly used into tricking security cameras into not recording activity that is within their coverage area. 2. The other looks like a common tv remote control with a short HF flexible antenna. Apparently this one is most commonly used to defeat motion detectors, door and window sensors. During the ADT Tech's most recent visit, an 'opposition member' drove up next door and the camera(S) never recorded him despite being within range of 3 cameras. A short while later, the system was being overtly jammed. Tech stated he had never seen anything like it, phoned his tech support office, stayed on the phone with them for a few minutes, whereupon my system was completely turned off (reset?), presumably by ADT Support. Tech promptly announced that he had another appointment to attend and to phone ADT if my system didn't come back up. My system rebooted and came back up shortly after the tech left, appearing to work normally, like nothing had ever happened. I've been complaining about this since early last December and this was the first time I could replicate the condition with a tech present so now they can't say I'm full of it. I suspect this is something they have full knowledge of but would prefer to keep it covered up as sales would collapse tomorrow if the general public found out. Cops stated there was nothing I could do since I had no proof. Can't afford an attorney or private investigator. The 'opposition' consists of 7 entities that I know of, 3 of which are next door neighbors. Nothing of serious financial value has been stolen, but i've experienced 'unauthorized entries' despite having locks changed, repeated vandalism and unauthorized use of motor vehicles. This, and being taunted on a near daily basis. One of my backyard cameras that also caught part of their property was recently mis-aimed toward the ground. I could go on in much more detail but I feel everyone gets a picture of my predicament. And, I have two years left on the contract for a system that is practically useless.

Signed me up for a monthly alarm monitoring, however neglected to mention anything about equipment repairs not being included as part of my monthly fee. My smoke detector they provide died after only 6 month. They came to change it, again no word about any charges, 1 month later I get a bill for $300 for a SMOKE DETECTOR! I called and they said they would not reduce the charges so I cancelled my 6 businesses with them.
