Security Review Home Automation Tech & Equipment Pricing & Packages Contract

ADT is one of the oldest home security companies in the world, with over one century under its belt. With that much experience, ADT is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home. OR do they really know? While one of the largest home security companies in the nation, many consumers of late have not been expressing fond interest in the company’s services. Hopefully, our quick Good & Bad breakdown will help give you an idea about what to expect with ADT Home Security.

How ADT Services Stack up:

ADT has three different plans to choose from with plenty of features that will help you secure and automate your home. However, you’ll only be able to access those features if you end up purchasing its most expensive package and take the risk of dealing with ADT’s customer service which users on our site are quite passionate about. See how ADT compares to the top rated home security companies below:

ADT Security Review

The Good

  • $28.99/Mo Traditional Plan For New CustomersADT-Guy
  • Free Installation & Nest Available With Video Plan
  • 6-Month Money Back Guarantee
  • ADT Pulse App

New customers of ADT can get started for just $28.99 per month with its Traditional package which is slightly lower than a majority of security companies out there. This plan comes with limited features but all plans come with a 6-month money back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

ADT’s video plan comes with free installation, and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse app.

The Bad

  • No Free Installation With Traditional Plan
  • 36-Month Contract Required
  • Many Negative User Reviews Left On Our Site

Customers that are new to ADT’s service will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with ADT’s service after the 6-month money back guarantee.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say about ADT and the service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with ADT reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other customers of ADT have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for service visits.

ADT Home Automation

The Good

ADT’s home automation program called “ADT Pulse” is a comprehensive package that includes burglary & theft, fire, carbon monoxide, flood, door, lighting, and video monitoring.  How it works is they have bundled together four package options that range from “select” as the basic to “Premier” as the most comprehensive.  In between these you can choose a system that most adequately meets your family’s needs.  For example, the Premiere package comes with the following equipment:

  • Monitored security systemadt-home-automation
  • Home controlled touch screen
  • Z-wave Door Lock
  • 1 thermostat
  • 2 light control modules
  • 2 video cameras
  • 2 door sensors
  • 1 motion detector
  • Cellular connection

The best part about the ADT Pulse system relative to other home automation packages is their Z-Wave technology and their video surveillance offers.  Z-Wave is ADT’s own wireless technology which allows your home’s electronics talk to each other and to you.  It “unifies them into an integrated network,” and can be hooked into by almost any electronic device in your house.  Also, with their top package ADT provides two video cameras—most companies only include one and require customers to purchase extras a la carte.

The Bad

ADT’s top home automation is a bit more expensive than similar packages from other companies.  For example, several other national retailers provide an almost identical package as the ADT Premiere Pulse package for about $200 less (the Premiere package costs $399).

  • Fire and smoke monitoring – notifies the homeowner and local fire department when triggered
  • Carbon monoxide monitoring – detects carbon monoxide before it becomes life threatening
  • Medical alert monitoring – a push of a button allows for two-way communication for someone in need

Their services expound on home security and touch into home automation that can be controlled remotely through mobile devices and apps. ADT utilizes Honeywell technology for their equipment.

ADT’s Contract & Monitoring

Contract and Cancellation

ADT requires a three-year (36-month) commitment prior to activation. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this 36-month commitment does not lock in the monthly monitoring rate, so customers may experience price increases during the three-year service period.
Customers who want to cancel before the term of their contract will have to pay an early termination fee and there may be other costs associated with cancellation depending on the package the customer chooses to go with. Potential customers should inquire about cancellation if they are anticipating a move or other disruptor that could keep them from finishing the contract term.

Installation

ADT installation requires a trained and certified technician to come to the home and install the system. There is no DIY option, which means customers will have to set up a scheduled time for the technician to come and install the system. The homeowner or other adult will also have to be present throughout the duration of the installation.

Installation costs start at $199 and ADT Pulse installations start at $399. There are promotions that take place throughout the year where these installation costs may come at a discounted rate, but that is not guaranteed upon purchase.

Monitoring

ADT provides 24/7 professional monitoring to all of their customers. ADT has their own monitoring centers spread across the United States and Canada. If a sensor or alarm is triggered in the protected home, monitoring systems will immediately pick up the alert and contact the homeowner directly. ADT will also send emergency dispatch to ensure protection.

Communication between ADT monitoring centers and the home take place through:

  1. Security panel – acts as a two-way communication system in the event of an emergency
  2. Smart voice sounder – this system will call out fire or intruder when alarm sounds
  3. Motion detector – detects the movement and sends alerts to the homeowner

FAQs

All questions and answers in this FAQ section are taken directly from ADT’s website. For any additional questions we recommend visiting their website or calling the company directly.

How do I reactivate the existing ADT system in my home?

If you moved into a home with an ADT system from the previous homeowner—you are one step closer to helping protect what matters most.

Now that you already have the system installed in your home, all you need to do is call ADT. Most times, if the system is in working order, we may be able to get it reactivated when you Contact Us directly by phone (Add Contact Page link to “Contact Us”) If the system is not working properly, a security professional will test the system during the phone call and help resolve any technical issues.

To get reactivated you’ll need to visit the ADT official Safe Move website.

How do I disconnect, pack and return my ADT Total Security System and TS Panel equipment?

After you disconnect your service, you will need to gather all equipment stated in the TS System Return Instructions and pack them properly with the provided shipping materials. When you disconnect your service, ADT will ship a pre-paid return box, along with packing materials and instructions to you.

ADT customers have three methods to choose from when returning the equipment box: 1) You can drop the box off at USPS, 2) or at FedEx, 3) or you can give it to your mail carrier. The barcode included on the return shipping label is a smart code and can be read by both USPS and FedEx.
In order to remove the TS Panel, you will need a Philips head screwdriver and a small flathead screwdriver.

Does ADT Pulse work with Ring or Chime? Which Pulse level is required and how does it work exactly?

Yes. Customers must have ADT Pulse Control service level or higher in order for Ring and Chime to connect with the Pulse mobile app. Customers can arm their security panel, lock their door locks and turn on their lights.

The Bottom Line

ADT offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.

We do not recommend ADT to be your home security provider. There are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and that are more affordable. Majority of past customers who have visited our site also seem to agree.

My 94 year old grandmother tried to cancel the service multiple times. She was asked to give her code, which she can’t remember, and was denied cancellation. She has moved to another state and poor health. She sold the home where service was active, and is still being billed. Very disappointed with company.

We have used ADT home security for several years. Our home was broken into and the system did not work. Thousands of dollars of personal items were stolen. The service personnel told us the system that had been installed was inadequate. ADT not only failed to protect our home, but also refused to take any financial responsibility for our lose. The purpose of a home security system is to work and ADT does not.

I have used ADT security for over 10 years. But I have noticed a sharp decline in service. I phoned them up the other day to get a service rep to come to my house. I am willing to pay for this service. I have recently remodeled and need new curtains. I need to move the sensors on my 2 windows from the top to the bottom of the window. ADT told me to do it myself. I don’t have a clue how to move the sensors. I am going to XFINIITY as a result.

We used a credit card to pay our bill by phone to an ADT agent, Cheryl. The card hadn’t been used to pay anyone else by phone, ever. Within 24 hours of giving her our info, we had been charged thousands of dollars for tickets to multiple rap concerts. ADT customer service won’t help us, the legal department does not answer the phone. We got ADT so we wouldn’t get robbed, then they robbed us.

Beware of installers in South Louisiana, they are dishonest and not trustworthy. They came to see if my current wiring (which worked fine) would work on their system. I told them that if they couldn’t make it work i wanted them to plug the system back in the way it was, I was assured they would. Instead of taking a picture before unplugging my wires, they tried to make their system work. When it didn’t work, they sent someone else to try. He couldn’t get it to work. When I ask him to plug it back in, he couldn’t because the prior tech didn’t take notes or pictures. They now have taken their equipment and now my system that was working before doesn’t even have power going to my control panels.

Burglar alarm noted on my ADT wireless Pulse system at 1 am from back sliding glass door. ADT did not call, nor did they contact the police. After 10 minutes of police non-arrival, I called 911, who told me that ADT had not contacted them. 911 dispatched police immediately after my call. One of the sensors had fallen off of the sliding glass door and broke. I contact ADT to check to see why police were not dispatched, and why I did not receive a call from ADT. I spoke with a condescending and rude support tech who tried to resolve my issue by trying to get me off the phone by explaining what happened at my house as if he were there… statements incorrect about the actual situation. When I asked why the police weren’t dispatched and no call from ADT, he told me “I’ve been trying to explain it to you, but it doesn’t seem to be ‘registering’!” I asked to speak to his supervisor. He chuckled and said… “Sure… I’ll you my supervisor!” (chuckle). The supervisor eventually came to the phone and apologized for everything and said it was all their fault and the person responsible would be reprimanded for not calling me or the police. He said that someone would call me from ADT this morning and schedule an appt to look at the sensor that fell/broke. I have yet to hear from anyone. I’ve had the system for about 2 1/2 weeks. I paid $1800 for the system, $52 per mo for the “service” that I’m apparently not getting, and having to deal with rude and incompetent staff members.

We had a contract initially for 36 mos.and after it ran out we still never were asked to renew they just providing service without another signing of a new contract. When the 5th year rate was outrageous i decided to change carrier and equipment and called adt to cancel my service they told me we need a month’s of uninterrupted service before i can cancel with them. I was kind enough to tell them that i don;t have a written contract currently with you why do i have to have this pricey service for another month? The rep. told me that your contract says so and i’am telling him we never renewed and there is nothing that he can do for me that i’am stuck in a contract that expired 2 years ago. I asked to ask for a supervisor and he told that he was it and he was the only one i can talk to as far as ADT goes. REALLY!! GONE FOR LIFE!!!

Beware of these cheaters (ADT). I used their service for 10+ years…there service has been declining day by day. They don’t care about existing customers. First you pay a lot for the equipment and then after one year warranty period, they charge you for any failure/visit.

Also, Police doesn’t even respond to their calls in majority of California cities (don’t know about other states)

Finally, I decided to switch to a ‘better’ option, and I called to cancel. First they tried to convince me to stay with ADT, and later when it didn’t work, they informed me it will take 30 days to disconnect my service (so they can charge another month of monitoring fee).

    What a ripoff !

    Keep a distance from them.

Have had ADT for 3 years, the service was really good on the monitoring aspect. The problem I had was canceling the system when my contract was up. I moved to a new home in a neighboring city with every intention of having ADT installing a new system in our new house once we finished remodeling. I spoke with a customer service rep who called me about new services since my contract was up at my old house. I explained the situation that we had moved and would be needing them to install a system in my new home as soon as we finished remodeling. I was told by this rep that my current account would be closed and to contact them as soon as I needed one installed at the new house. Today I received a letter stating that where I had cancelled my bank account they could not receive novenbers payment. So I called customer support, regarding my account that was closed in March. No help! Make sure when cancelling your plan to watch you bank account for continuing deductions and make sure you get an email confirmation of cancelation.

ADT was supposed to come out and take over monitoring of a FULLY functional hard wired system. The field tech arrived 45 min late while I was in a meeting. When I got out of the meeting, he had electrically fried my old system and informed me that he was installing a new Wireless system.
I informed him I didn’t want a wireless system and he was supposed to use the hard wire taps already in place.
Basically, he got thrown out of the house and a supervisor called me back.
Another tech came in and said at this point, only a wireless system would work. So they told me that monitoring would be $35 plus taxes.
We were also told we would be getting $200 in visa cards, but the new system would cost me $272. We were also told we didn’t need a master code since we had key fobs.

Here we are 2 months in:
    1. The alarm went off last night and we didn’t have a master code to give to the monitor.
We didn’t have a passcode to give to the monitor.
In short, we had to talk to the police.
    2. no sign of the visa cards. Turns out they emailed the documentation to us, but they didn’t ask for an email address.
    3. Same goes for the master code and passcode. They emailed them to an email address they didn’t have
    4. Now they tell us we are in a $50/month contract and cant find us in their system.

I was approached by an ADT sales person. He held out his ADT Security sign and offered it “FREE”. He was in my neighborhood because there had been a rash of recent burglaries.

Apparently, ADT secures the names and addresses of residents that have been victimized. To me, this is reminiscent of an ambulance chaser. ADT’s business practice is to catch the victim AND their neighbors while they are still “shaken”, in hopes of a sale AND three-year contract.

Thought it was too funny. As for the FREE sign (did not happen), it only serves to let a thief know that you must have something worthy of stealing.

I filed a fraud packet 1.5 yrs ago with adt and called several times for follow up and they never completed the packet review despite over 30 different workers saying they would do so and during this process still sent a 1500 bill to collections which i found is against their policy. Also sent a letter to ceo and she or he never responded. The company, in my experience is money driven and lack customer service skills and follow through.

Extremely disappointed with A.D.T. I cancelled my policy before the due date because I wasn’t using the service and I wanted to reduce my monthly payments. They continue to bill me because they say it wasn’t cancelled correctly. One person I talked to at A.D.T. was supposed to settle the matter for me, but that didn’t happen. Now they say I’m five months past due. I’ll never use this service again—for sure!!. .

Today I ended my 23 year relationship with ADT Security. I am disappointed with the service they have been providing and the attention to long-term customers. There are several reasons I am leaving but the most important is the lack of true monitoring of the phone lines used to transmit issues back to ADT.

Yes I do still use a land line (that changes as of today also). Last week I lost the telephone service to my house and ADT was unaware of any issues and did not use my alternative contact info (my cell number) to get in touch with me to see if there was an issue. This is when I found out that they were no longer monitoring the voltage on the line. This means if someone cut my line in advance to entering the house, ADT would not have known. This is not acceptable. The ADT tech that came out to test the alarm told me that it has been several years since ADT monitored the voltage on the lines to determine if communications had been impaired. I was aghast that as a customer who was paying premium dollar was getting less than optimal service.

I also have a problem with their technology. Within the last 24 months I requested that they provide new technology (for which I would have paid for) they replaced one touch pad with a new touch pad that had no additional features or functions and was much slower in responding to arming and disarming.

I am so committed to leaving ADT I am spending $1,700 to have a new system put in my house with top of the line technology, continuous monitoring of the communication links, and I am paying the same per month. This was not about saving money, the switch was done because ADT no longer provided a service which protected my family.

Also know that even after all these years ADT will “Clip” me for another month’s monitoring fee as it is their policy to take 30 days to terminate service. Again I point out that this is supposed to be a technology based provider that takes 30 days to shut a service off. What a scam – I can guarantee you that if tomorrow I am broken into ADT will not be monitoring my house even though I am paying for the month.

Let me finish by saying that I think ADT may have been around for 100 years and control a huge market share but that this does not mean that they provide quality service and great technology – just better adds. Be very careful, there are better cheaper and less restrictive providers of security systems out there.
