ADT is one of the oldest home security companies in the world, with over one century under its belt. With that much experience, ADT is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home. OR do they really know? While one of the largest home security companies in the nation, many consumers of late have not been expressing fond interest in the company’s services. Hopefully, our quick Good & Bad breakdown will help give you an idea about what to expect with ADT Home Security.

The Good

  • $28.99/Mo Traditional Plan For New Customers

  • ADT Pulse App

New customers of ADT can get started for just $28.99 per month with its Traditional package which is slightly lower than a majority of security companies out there. This plan comes with limited features but all plans come with a 6-month money back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

ADT’s video plan comes with free installation, and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse app.

The Bad

Customers that are new to ADT’s service will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with ADT’s service after the 6-month money back guarantee.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say about ADT and the service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with ADT reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other customers of ADT have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for service visits.

The Bottom Line

ADT offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.

We do not recommend ADT to be your home security provider. There are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and that are more affordable. Companies like Frontpoint Security, Protect America, and SimpliSafe.

    I have been a customer of ADT for over 7 years now. When we moved we transfered our services. At least thats what we thought but we were placed in an entirely brand new contract. We were then billed $1300 for breaking the contract. After several calls we were assured that this was an issue between ADT and their contractor, I had nothing to worry about. Long story short they have been reporting this amount to the credit agency’s for YEARS. We started contacting their billing department, at each contact was assured the appropriate paperwork was sent to have this removed from my credit. Well, it has not been removed. I am unable to receive decent loan offers, and now have to show the bank that I have paid them, since they reported as a new account last month. So not only have they damaged my credit rating, but their rep in the rudest tone ever tells me they will do anything except submit the appropriate documents, I am not being given anything. I did not ask for a hand out ADT, but I do deserve to made whole because of their gross negligence. Not only was the rep Danny Cruz snotty, but while informing him how these actions have hurt my family, yes I was crying, there was laughter. I guess lossing my affordable home loan, was hilarious. No customer service, no loyalty to their customers. I wish I would have sent that rep away. You probably should!

    My wife and I moved almost 3 years ago. I notified ADT of our moving and recognized the fact we owed 1 year of a 2 year ADT service contract. We continued with ADT monthly withdraw from my personal check account until ADT service contract was paid in full. My wife called 1 month before ADT contract ended to notify our ending the contract.

    After 3 months I noticed ADT continue to withdraw monthly charge of $58. I’d called ADT again and customer Rep claimed my wife wasn’t qualified to cancel contract. But the ADT contract listed had my first name with wife’s first name listed as my middle name.

    Don’t know how ADT screwed up the name listing on the account and not list my wife’s name as well as my correctly, but according to ADT customer Reps technically our names mixed together as one person disqualifies my wife able to cancel contracts.

    I replied to the ADT customer Rep, “can you please end the contract as I am the contract person you’re willing to recognize”. She replied yes, “we’ll stop the automatic withdraw”. At this point I assumed I was finally finished with ADT.

    On the 6 month after contract ended ADT continue to withdraw $58 and I called again. ADT no had options but to finally cancel contract and promised a refund. The next month ADT started sending Service Bills in the mail to my current address for ADT services. I called again and again attempting to stop this nightmare.

    ADT withdraw 6 months of service payments illegally and then continue to send Bills for another additional 6 months, I finally gave up. During all this time ADT Alarm device was not used period at our old address.

    Now ADT turned my account over to a Debit Collection Agency (Source/RM) claiming I owe them $351.85 which was the amount to the penny ADT stole from my personal checking account for 6 months after contract ended.

    When having the ADT system insaled. The service person recommend that the delay time was enough for me to entered throught the front door and disarm the system. Then I mention I sometimes come in through the garadge door and he insisted it was enough time to still disamed the system. And if it was an issue then we can come back out and adjust the delay time. But he fail to mention that it’s a charge for them to change it. Just another dishonest company trying to get money from honest hard working people.. ADT you suck!!!

    My husband passed away but I had , without realising it, kept on paying the monthly premium for a few years. I had not used the alarm system since he had died, as I didn’t know the passcode.
    When I emailed ADT & asked to be reimbursed, they flatly refused, stating I was not the executor, & that I had been entitled to maintenance for the alarm soI was therefore was ineligible to get my money back. I said that I wasn’t the contractee, so I had thought the contract had died with my husband. They then refused to deal with me any more.

    Had ADT for 6 years and was very satisfied. Then they switched us to SDT Pulse and weve had nothing but trouble. ‘System Panel Trouble’ goes off randomly a few times a week and beeps loudly in the middle of the night. I have also seen the cats sit on the alarm pad and set the alarm even though representative told me this is not possible.

    The worst security co. Out there they will tell you anything to get you to sign with them adt defenders is a laugh they lie to you I will not stay with them.they never call if your alarm goes off do not sign a contract with them ADT DEFENDERS DONT FORGET ADT DEFENDERS IS A NO NO THE WORST

    Yeah they’re a PITA, but get on phone and threaten to dump them they get REAL cooperative…quick. Maybe not the best but by FAR burgulars have NAME RECOGNITION
    with these guys…who the heck ever heard of thse others? Not the burgulars that’s for sure…naw, I’ll keep ADT and a loaded 9MM just to be safe thank you.

    My contract with ADT has expired and I have cancelled their service both in writing and through the internet but I continue to receive a bill. When I cancelled their service through the internet they said they could not cancel it if I did not remember the code that I gave them 3 years ago at the time of the contract signing. I have never been treated this badly by any business.

    I have a pet who weighs over 50 pounds so my security system is useless so I have never used it and I pay for nothing for almost 2 years but can’t cancel or they charge a ton to do it. I was not told thst having the sensor for my hall keeps me from using it as I leave my dog home often. I’m waiting until my contract is up and then will take action. I pay a lot monthly for nothing .

    We expressed some interest in getting an ADT system OR Vivint. We ended up choosing Vivint just for their smart home selection. ADT has been RELENTLESS. They won’t stop calling my husband 5-6 times a day and coming to our house knocking on the door trying to get us to switch. LEARN TO TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. There’s a fine line between sales and harassment!!

    Had ADT for many years, happily paying over $50 per month thinking ADT had our back. The alarm was ON when it should be, OFF when it could be and all along we understood that ADT was monitoring things and would let us know if something went wrong. A couple of weeks ago Susan picked up the very seldom used house phone to discover no dial tone. I found it strange and thought it was a recent outage that ADT had yet to report to me. Upon considering it further trying to piece together the I recalled that over 6 months’ prior the cable company had installed a new line from the poll to the house and in doing so had snipped the telephone wire; both being underground an easy mistake to make. But what about ADT? Why had I heard nothing from them regarding the lost signal. Simple answer, ADT does not monitor for a connection and has no keep alive signal in any of their offerings. Their take must be, if we hear nothing then all is good. The upshot, ADT charges a monthly fee for a service that they do not in fact provide.

    DON’T USE!!! I called and requested a disconnect because I was moving & they charged me for an additional month of service after I had already moved. ADT said this is their “policy”. What a rip off!!!!! I had been with them for over 10 years, but never again.

    I have to wonder how trustworthy this company is. They suggest in their ad they’ve been doing this for 140 year and while the company has been around that long, the security aspect of it didn’t come into being until 1910 – 1930!

    I do not recommend ADT if you want to be told the truth. I was not made aware that there would be a third party actually doing the installation for me. I was promised one price and after the technician took down my old system, he decided to finally talk to me about the price I would be charged monthly. Only then did I find out that I had been lied even though I had spoken with a supervisor and given special pricing for my monthly bill. the technician proceeded to call his supervisor that did not agree with the pricing I was promised and tried to get me to agree to accept visa gift cards in exchange for the over price issue. anyway the installer took back their equipment and told me that he did not know how to reinstall my old alarm and walked out my house. I then noticed that he had cut extra wires in my home and had just left them hanging from my walls, ceiling, and electrical box. I DO NOT AND WILL NEVER RECCOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE. I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE A CALL BACK AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO SPEAK WITH A SUPERVISOR OR EVEN SOMEONE FROM THE CORPORATE OFFICE!!!!!!! I wish I could give them less than 0.

    Was scheduled for a touch pad upgrade only to find out the upgrade I wanted was not the one that was quoted to me. I was charge for additional Items I didn’t need and was told that the panel upgrade quoted to me may not work with my current system. I have had ADT for many years and have always had issues. At one point, I paid my bill on line and used my debit card. ADT withdrew more than the payment amount I entered. It took 3 moths to get resolved.
