Security Review Home Automation Tech & Equipment Pricing & Packages Contract

ADT is one of the oldest security companies in the world, with over one century under its belt. With that much experience, ADT is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home. OR do they really know? While one of the largest home security companies in the nation, many consumers of late have not been expressing fond interest in the company’s services. Hopefully, our quick Good & Bad breakdown will help give you an idea about what to expect with ADT Home Security.

How ADT Services Stack up:

ADT has three different plans to choose from with plenty of features that will help you secure and automate your home. However, you’ll only be able to access those features if you end up purchasing its most expensive package and take the risk of dealing with ADT’s customer service which users on our site are quite passionate about. See how ADT compares to the top rated home security companies below:

ADT Security Review

The Good

  • $28.99/Mo Traditional Plan For New CustomersADT-Guy
  • Free Installation & Nest Available With Video Plan
  • 6-Month Money Back Guarantee
  • ADT Pulse App

New customers of ADT can get started for just $28.99 per month with its Traditional package which is slightly lower than a majority of security companies out there. This plan comes with limited features but all plans come with a 6-month money back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

ADT’s video plan comes with free installation, and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse app.

The Bad

  • No Free Installation With Traditional Plan
  • 36-Month Contract Required
  • Many Negative User Reviews Left On Our Site
  • Plethora of BBB Complaints

Customers that are new to ADT’s service will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with ADT’s service after the 6-month money back guarantee.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say about ADT and the service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with ADT reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other customers of ADT have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for service visits. You’ll most likely notice the high number of complaints on ADT’s BBB page as well.

ADT Home Automation

The Good

ADT’s home automation program called “ADT Pulse” is a comprehensive package that includes burglary & theft, fire, carbon monoxide, flood, door, lighting, and video monitoring.  How it works is they have bundled together four package options that range from “select” as the basic to “Premier” as the most comprehensive.  In between these you can choose a system that most adequately meets your family’s needs.  For example, the Premiere package comes with the following equipment:

  • Monitored security systemadt-home-automation
  • Home controlled touch screen
  • Z-wave Door Lock
  • 1 thermostat
  • 2 light control modules
  • 2 video cameras
  • 2 door sensors
  • 1 motion detector
  • Cellular connection

The best part about the ADT Pulse system relative to other home automation packages is their Z-Wave technology and their video surveillance offers.  Z-Wave is ADT’s own wireless technology which allows your home’s electronics talk to each other and to you.  It “unifies them into an integrated network,” and can be hooked into by almost any electronic device in your house.  Also, with their top package ADT provides two video cameras—most companies only include one and require customers to purchase extras a la carte.

The Bad

ADT’s top home automation is a bit more expensive than similar packages from other companies.  For example, several other national retailers provide an almost identical package as the ADT Premiere Pulse package for about $200 less (the Premiere package costs $399).

  • Carbon monoxide monitoring – detects carbon monoxide before it becomes life threatening
  • Medical alert monitoring – a push of a button allows for two-way communication for someone in need

Their services expound on home security and touch into home automation that can be controlled remotely through mobile devices and apps. ADT utilizes Honeywell technology for their equipment.

ADT’s Contract & Monitoring

Contract and Cancellation

ADT requires a three year (36-month) commitment prior to activation. This 36-month commitment will lock in the monthly monitoring rate, so customers do not have to worry about a price increase during the initial three year service period. Monthly fees can change after the three year agreement is expired.

Customers who want to cancel before the term of their contract will have to pay an early termination fee and there may be other costs associated with cancellation depending on the package the customer chooses to go with. Potential customers should inquire about cancellation if they are anticipating a move or other disruptor that could keep them from finishing the contract term.

Installation

ADT installation requires a trained and certified technician to come to the home and install the system. There is no DIY option, which means customers will have to set up a scheduled time for the technician to come and install the system. The homeowner or other adult will also have to be present throughout the duration of the installation.

Installation costs start at $199 and ADT Pulse installations start at $399. There are promotions that take place throughout the year where these installation costs may come at a discounted rate, but that is not guaranteed upon purchase.

Monitoring

ADT provides 24/7 professional monitoring to all of their customers. ADT has their own monitoring centers spread across the United States and Canada. If a sensor or alarm is triggered in the protected home, monitoring systems will immediately pick up the alert and contact the homeowner directly. ADT will also send emergency dispatch to ensure protection.

Communication between ADT monitoring centers and the home take place through:

  1. Security panel – acts as a two-way communication system in the event of an emergency
  2. Smart voice sounder – this system will call out fire or intruder when alarm sounds
  3. Motion detector – detects the movement and sends alerts to the homeowner

The Bottom Line

ADT offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits.

We do not recommend ADT to be your home security provider. There are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and that are more affordable. Majority of past customers who have visited our site also seem to agree.

I have had ADT and Pulse for almost 5 years now. I have had some equipment challenges with Pulse but ADT would always send someone out to take care of that when I would call in. The total monthly price is not terrible under $60/month for everything. I have a house and a barn that is fully covered.

This is AMAZING. If you move during your contract, you MUST enter into a BRAND NEW CONTRACT – for 3 MORE YEARS. In addition, if you don’t want to move your system, ADT will charge you for the remainder of the contract. SO THEY FALSE ADVERTISE, they threatened me today that if I pursued a lawsuit, they would not offer me a reduced rate!!!

This company should be called under the carpet, in this day and age, this type of business tactics should be illegal. I did just get a $13. a month reduction but I feel violated. He was not customer friendly and basically told me I was lucky to be getting that discount and that I should not have gotten the $47.99 rate for basic service to begin with.

I figure I will be getting a check one of these days after they get sued in a class action suit.

I have ADT for about 6 years now and I am very pleased with my service. There was an attempted break in at my home and ADT was right on it. The loud alarm chased the intruder away the Police found all the screens in my 3 season room removed and the French door was pried but access was not gained. They have always been very nice when I call to have my system checked

Recently, after receiving quotes from 3 companies for specific items, I agreed to contract ADT for my home security system. The process I discovered may be helpful for anyone looking to do the same.
My first suspicion came when I received no reply to the confirmation email which listed different equipment than agreed upon. Attempts to contact ADT were difficult but ended with the fact that you are not dealing with ADT initially. They use sub contractors, in my case: Protect Your Home. Protect Your Home did not respond to any of my calls or email message to discuss the equipment issues.
When the installers showed up, on time, I reviewed what was exactly agreed to, equipment, monitoring access/control of the system, etc. Both installers acknowledged that coincided with their order. I pointed out a discrepancy in their order which included 7 doors when in fact agreed to 5. They mentioned the two additional were included by the home office at no additional charge. The installers worked to the best of their ability and installed the panel, then did a walk through to assess the overall risk. Once that was done they excused themselves, when to their vehicle and returned with a proposal and display of all available equipment options. After the presentation they explained the monitoring was 50% more than originally agreed to due to the cell phone control. My original agreement included cell phone control, and a interactive panel ( which ADT does not have ). I refused the system, the installers call a management person in Indianapolis who basically told me there was nothing that could be done with the monitoring fee as it may have been misquoted. In essence, if Protect Your Home was wrong, it’s the customers fault. The refund was another matter, it may take 4 business days to show up. Funny it took 10 minutes to process through my account initially. Next this same person, who offered to review the initial order call, said he would not be able to provide the outcome once the refund is processed since there is no contract. I find the practice employed by Protect Your Home as deceptive at least.
I am waiting for ADT’s response as to their responsibility for sub contractors actions.

ADT plays Too many sales games. I had ADT at my business and when I wanted to upgrade my existing system to their Pulse system, I was told that I would lose my current smoke and fire protection for they can’t monitor that anymore on businesses. If I left my system the same, then I wouldn’t lose the smoke and fire monitoring services. I was paying nearly $70 a month for having an alarm and 4 smoke/fire sensors for they were increasing my monthly bill every year by $2-$3 dollars since I had the system. You can’t renew your contract when it expires and secure your rate. It will auto roll over every year but you will get increased monthly because of this. That’s what was explained to my when I called to have my rate reduced and resign up for a contract term. I’ve since left ADT and all is well. I have a monthly bill $30 less than what I was paying without losing my fire and smoke monitoring and I can control my system from my phone and it came with 2 wireless cameras. ADT has the name, and I really liked my sales guy. He was awesome but the company is ran by idiots. I give my sales guy and the techs a 10 rating. Everyone else from the call center up to the executives gets a big fat ZERO!!!

I have been a customer at ADT since 2001 and they have the worst customer service ever. I was told I needed to upgrade and scheduled an appointment only for technician to show up and not have what he needed for the job. I was told I had to reschedule. Made another appointment and had to work left 30 year old son to let them in and was told it would be ok until I came home. Technician left and said I had to reschedule again. They told me I had to pay one price then kept changing the price. I’m done I don’t want ADT to take another dime out of my bank. I will get another company.

When I called customer service to get prices and details, they were good, letting me know the differences between them and another company I was thinking about going with. ADT gave me all the specs, i.e monthly cost, insulation fee. But when the tech got to my house he told me that customer service had gave me the wrong monthly cost, but he said that was not the first time he had heard that from a customer. The service guy’s manager had came to my house also, after I told him about what customer service told me he was very upset. He offered me 4,$100.00 visa cards, so I said ok go ahead. Well, the next day I called ADT to speak to an manager about the wrong monthly change being given to me and I wanted the call pulled to review. The CS lady told me, well, if you went a head and went through the process getting it instilled and you knew the correct monthly charge was different, then that’s on you. I said I would still like an manager to call me back and have the call reviewed. To this day I have not received a call! And my visa cards where taken back also! I have cancelled their service within 3 days but they still drafted a monthly fee from my checking account ! Very bad customer service.. Tech guy and manager was very nice

Unfortunately, my experience with ADT alarm services has been unbelievable poor. In fact the worst experience I have ever had with a service company. I have had my alarm for a month or so now and it has never worked correctly. It triggered itself at random times, when it wasn’t even activated bringing the police our home needlessly, but the worst problem was the intermittent noises it would make about like a smoke detector going off, it would do this almost every day. Sometimes every hour or so, sometimes it might take a few hours. This made sleeping impossible. We contacted the company many times with the same result. First you get left on hold, then you spend an hour trying to have them walk you through reprogramming the device and running down countless error messages, then you are told a service rep will contact you. The automated service rep will call you from time to time and leave garbled and useless voice mail. A real person never called back. Finally we just gave up and said take it back and refund our money, since they promised to guarantee it for 6 months. They told us we had to pay full fee for the system and a disconnection fee for a total over 4 thousand dollars. Fortunately I have learned that this company is the defendant in numerous class action suits and it appears our legal battle will be rolled into those suits.

We had the ADT Pulse system installed in the latter part of July. Went to Texas for vacation on August 9th and on August 10th at 3:59am a sensor was tripped and ADT contacted local law enforcement. You think, awesome, wonderful. THINK AGAIN. We were told that the cameras were set up to automatically record 30 seconds of any motion sensor trigger. We were not told however that we needed to get on the computer and set the cameras to record for longer than 30 seconds. The only recording we got was a 30 second clip of a flash light beam. They came over our brick wall, from our neighbors yard and broke a pipe on the pool. That drained about a quarter of the water from our pool. While the water is gushing from the pool they broke our bedroom window and proceeded to take what they could carry. They stole our safe with important documents inside. They also tried to steal a gun case. Being to heavy to lift, they attempted to pry it open. That didnt work so they abandoned the gun safe and proceeded to take all my jewelry and jewelry boxes. The stole approximately $25,000.00 worth of jewelry. I guess it was time for them to go. They went out the back door which tripped the sensor. That is where the 30 second clip of the flashlight beam came in. My problem is this. From the time of the 30 second clip until my phone call 2 1/2 hours later, why didn’t it record 30 second intervals of the police being here. When asked that question, their reply was “there must have been a malfunction in the camera or the system. I asked. How could the camera or system record 30 seconds of a flashlight beam and record everything when i called 2 1/2 hours later but nothing in between. They couldn’t answer that question. We have been married 27 yrs, have never been robbed and less than a month after we get a security system, we are robbed. Things that make you go hmmmmmm. Even with the tech here going thru with us everything thwt we needed to fell secure, the system was grossly inadequate. But what did we know what we needed. This is our first time. They should have been more interested in helping with a system that would have prevented the burglars from taking anything at all and/or getting away with it instead of being more interested to get back to his car where his wife was waiting. They are sending a tech guy out tomorrow. Not sure what my husband willl do when he gets here. Guess i will be lucky that im not here. I am devastated at what was damaged and taken and highly doubt any system they install now will make me feel better or secure ever again.

ADT customer service has always been able to address and resolve any questions/issues I might have. Their technicians are well trained, come well equipted and know exactly what to do. My ADT bill used to be high. I called them and informed them that I was thinking of changing companies due to their high monthly fee. The customer service representation took immediate action and said: “We do not want to lose you as a customer. The best we can do is to reduce your monthly service fee to $29.99 plus tax.” Given that they install all my window, door, and alarm systems, I accepted and have been extremely satisfied.

ADT’s marketing is great, but their service sucks. Period.

    ————————————–
    The basic reasons why I want to cancel my account are;

    — I have been paying for 4 years for ADT’s service, which I have come to realize has provided 0 value. Even worse, it has provided a false sense of security.

    — After having the alarm set up initially, I changed my phone number and notified ADT. Periodically I have called ADT for service updates, etc., and each time, ADT still has the old, inactive number and not the current one. ADT has failed this simple task at least 3 times now…

    — During the course of periodic equipment updates from ADT, 3 times the ADT technician failed to show up at the scheduled time because of the wrong phone number. I have lost a lot of money waiting.

    — Each time, ADT promises bill credit, which I never get. Now I am owed $150 in bill credits.

    — If the alarm goes off, I don’t get a call.
    ————————————–

ADT sent letters explaining a mandatory equipment upgrade. We scheduled an appointment for a 4-hour window on Thursday Jul-28. The technician finally showed up as the window ended and explained that I didn’t answer the phone. Of course, because ADT failed to correct the phone number again.

All of the service technicians have been polite and competent including this one. He took care of the equipment upgrade right away. He could not change my phone number on record, but told me that I could register for myADT.com to change phone number, etc.

Sunday Jul-31 2016, I tried to register for myADT.com, but couldn’t because… wrong phone number. Called ADT customer service who recommended that I register for myADT.com…

Suddenly I realized that I should not trust ADT with my security.

I requested to cancel my account and was told that “customer retention” is not available today. I only want to cancel my account, which is a simple matter. Apparently ADT can’t handle that without creating a hassle.

I called back on Monday, Aug-1 to cancel service. After 25 minutes on hold while the hold message repeated “estimated wait time 5 minutes” finally got a live person. I repeated “cancel my service” for 5 minutes until the ADT representative complied and told me a confirmation number, but only after she read a condescending script including lines such as, “I’m sorry to hear that you no longer want to protect your home and your family.” I asked for confirmation by email, which is against ADT policy apparently. Was told that I would receive a postal letter in 7-10 days.

On Wednesday Aug-10, no letter yet. Checked the credit card account and saw that ADT billed for another month yesterday, though they finally gave me some of the credit owed.

I called ADT, and surprise, they don’t have a record of my cancellation. Requested immediate cancellation again, they still won’t email confirmation.

Even though, our 2-year contract expired 2 years ago, ADT now insists that per contract they require 30 days notice to cancel. And I should receive a letter within 7-10 days after the minimum 30 days notice.

Looking on ADT’s Facebook page, I noticed dozens of other people posting similar complaints. I posted mine and was told to call Customer Service or register for my ADT.com.

I tweeted the @ADT and their CEO @NarenGursahaney with a link to my post on Facebook. About 5 minutes later, ADT deleted my post, banned me from their FB page, and started deleting all negative reviews from others.

No real response from ADT, just obstruction and deception. I did get a call from “Digital Reputation Management” within a few hours though…

All I want to do is cancel my service. No contract, no strings attached, but ADT just won’t let go.

Finally, I called my credit card company to block charges from ADT.

ADT = rich marketing, poor service.

Time for another class-action lawsuit against ADT…

The original batteries in the panel are not the same as the replacement batteries I requested. Called customer service for technical help; was not able to help me. Suggested a technician to do the work instead for a service fee. I did not agree because the batteries they sent is not the same as the original —the customer service insisted that they sent the right batteries and the original batteries’ not the right ones. Either way, why should I pay for the service, he still insisted that I have to pay for the service and that’s that. I am not very happy with the outcome of our conversation. Now I am contemplating of discontinuing their service and start looking for a better one.

Think twice about using ADT as your home security service. The equipment never worked and detector alarms went off in the middle of the night. ADT was happy to send someone to your house for a cost of $150 to fix their own defective equipment, and it still did not function properly. Then don’t forget, once you are completely fed up and want to quit the service…you need to give them 30 days notice so you have to continue to pay $$ for that defective service. Oh and also, the entire system relies on your phone line…robbers cut your phone line and they don’t have to worry about ANY alarm going off. Do not go with ADT.

Thank God for ADT. I got my system installed about a month ago. Last week, I was at work getting ready to get off for the night, and my alarm went off. My wife and one year old baby were at home. Turns out, two punk teens had hopped my fence and tried getting in through the rear garage door. As soon as they opened it, the alarm sounded. She looked outside just in time to see them scrambling back over the fence. Honestly, Lord only knows what would have happened had they gotten inside before realizing she was home. I’m not sure why these people are all complaining. All my stuff works great and it’s already more than payed for itself with just that one incident. Thanks ADT for keeping my family safe while I was away!!!

REAL REVIEWS (YES THEY’RE REAL)

With so many home security companies out there, and a lack of sites willing to bring you the HONEST breakdowns of each company, what source can you turn to for the real information you can trust?

We are dedicated to bringing the truth out, and rank home security companies as they should be. Through our investigation, and experience with each company, we rank each company, and bring you our honest, unbiased opinion. We also include authentic user reviews by past customers of each company that are moderated and verified.

Like many sites, we are compensated through affiliate relationships with each company we review, however all of our rankings are based on our 9-Point Ranking Criteria.

All reviews are subject to moderation and approval. Any reviews that may resemble false information, or competitors of another company will need to be verified by our staff before being approved and published. We reserve the right to approve or deny any reviews left on this site.
