ADT is one of the oldest security companies in the world, with over one century under its belt. With that much experience, ADT is bound to know what it’s talking about with securing your home. ADT has three different plans to choose from with plenty of features that will help you secure and automate your home. However, you’ll only be able to access those features if you end up purchasing its most expensive package and take the risk of dealing with ADT’s customer service which users on our site are quite passionate about. New customers of ADT can get started for just $28.99 per month with its Traditional package which is slightly lower than a majority of security companies out there. This plan comes with limited features but all plans come with a 6-month money back guarantee. If during this time, you are at all dissatisfied with the service that ADT provides, they will refund you the installation charge and any monitoring fees you’ve accrued.

ADT’s video plan comes with free installation, and a Nest Learning Thermostat which is just one of the perks of paying $49.99 per month for this plan. Not only that, but this plan includes home automation features that let you control door locks, lighting, your thermostat, and your garage, remotely from the ADT Pulse app.

Customers that are new to ADT’s service will be able to take advantage of its lowest monitoring plan (Traditional) at $28.99 per month, however, this plan does not come with free installation or the extended limited warranty. You will be required to sign a 36-month contract (24-month if you are a resident of California) which is unfortunate if you become dissatisfied with ADT’s service after the 6-month money back guarantee.

Users of our site have had quite a bit to say about ADT and the service it provides. Several reviews proclaimed problems with ADT reps not showing up to appointments they scheduled, not to mention the hours that some customers have been put on hold for. Other customers of ADT have mentioned that they were charged high cancellation fees as well as expensive rates for service visits. The Bottom Line

ADT offers great introductory packages to help you get started with securing your home. The Video package is a little more expensive than the Traditional but it comes with free installation, tons of home automation features, and a 6-month money back guarantee. However, if you decide to go with ADT, you must sign a 36-month contract, and you run the risk of dealing with its poor customer service, high cancellation fees, and costly service visits. At this time, we do not recommend ADT to be your home security provider as there are many other companies out there that offer better customer service and that are more affordable.

ADT Money-Back Service Guarantee

If during the six months following installation we are unable to resolve any installation/service-related concern, we will refund the installation charge and/or any monitoring fees paid. Theft Protection Guarantee

The Customer presenting ADT with this ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE will be eligible to receive a reimbursement of up to five hundred dollars ($500) of Customer’s homeowner’s insurance deductible (if any) if, and only if, ALL of the following requirements are met to ADT’s reasonable satisfaction: (i) the property loss was the result of a burglary that took place while the security system installed at Customer’s protected premises was in good working order and was “on,” and while all of Customer’s doors and windows were locked; and (ii) the intruder entered the residence through a door, window or other area equipped with an ADT detection device, and such detection device was not “bypassed”; and (iii) Customer is not in any way in default under the ADT Residential Systems Customer’s Order; and (iv) Customer files a written claim with their homeowner’s insurance company, and such claim is not rejected or otherwise contested by the insurer; and (v) Customer reports the burglary loss to the appropriate police department and obtains a written police report; and (vi) Customer provides ADT with copies of the insurance claim report, the police report within sixty (60) days of the property loss and proof of settlement by insurance carrier; and (vii) Customer certifies in writing to ADT (by signing this ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE and presenting it to ADT within sixty [60] days of the property loss) that all of the foregoing requirements have been satisfied. The Good

ADT’s home automation program called “ADT Pulse” is a comprehensive package that includes burglary & theft, fire, carbon monoxide, flood, door, lighting, and video monitoring.  How it works is they have bundled together four package options that range from “select” as the basic to “Premier” as the most comprehensive.  In between these you can choose a system that most adequately meets your family’s needs.  For example, the Premiere package comes with the following equipment:

  • Monitored security system
  • Home controlled touch screen
  • Z-wave Door Lock
  • 1 thermostat
  • 2 light control modules
  • 2 video cameras
  • 2 door sensors
  • 1 motion detector
  • Cellular connection

The monitoring The best part about the ADT Pulse system relative to other home automation packages is their Z-Wave technology and their video surveillance offers.  Z-Wave is ADT’s own wireless technology which allows your home’s electronics talk to each other and to you.  It “unifies them into an integrated network,” and can be hooked into by almost any electronic device in your house.  Also, with their top package ADT provides two video cameras—most companies only include one and require customers to purchase extras a la carte.

The Bad

ADT’s top home automation is a bit more expensive than similar packages from other companies.  For example, several other national retailers provide an almost identical package as the ADT Premiere Pulse package for about $200 less (the Premiere package costs $399).

Contract and Cancellation

ADT requires a three year (36-month) commitment prior to activation. This 36-month commitment will lock in the monthly monitoring rate, so customers do not have to worry about a price increase during the initial three year service period. Monthly fees can change after the three year agreement is expired.

Customers who want to cancel before the term of their contract will have to pay an early termination fee and there may be other costs associated with cancellation depending on the package the customer chooses to go with. Potential customers should inquire about cancellation if they are anticipating a move or other disruptor that could keep them from finishing the contract term.

Installation

ADT installation requires a trained and certified technician to come to the home and install the system. There is no DIY option, which means customers will have to set up a scheduled time for the technician to come and install the system. The homeowner or other adult will also have to be present throughout the duration of the installation.

Installation costs start at $199 and ADT Pulse installations start at $399. There are promotions that take place throughout the year where these installation costs may come at a discounted rate, but that is not guaranteed upon purchase.

Monitoring

ADT provides 24/7 professional monitoring to all of their customers. ADT has their own monitoring centers spread across the United States and Canada. If a sensor or alarm is triggered in the protected home, monitoring systems will immediately pick up the alert and contact the homeowner directly. ADT will also send emergency dispatch to ensure protection.

Communication between ADT monitoring centers and the home take place through:

  1. Security panel – acts as a two-way communication system in the event of an emergency
  2. Smart voice sounder – this system will call out fire or intruder when alarm sounds
  3. Motion detector – detects the movement and sends alerts to the homeowner

    Worst alarm company ever. The sales rep didn’t mention a 3 yr contract when I originally signed up. The alarm hasn’t worked for months and yet when I called to have it serviced, sat on hold for an hour, several times, no one showed up and yet I was still being charged the $40.65 a month. Now, I am moving and they want $585.67 for the remaining 16 mths of service. Do Yourself a favor and do not get involved with this rip-off company.

    – Misguiding advertising
    – Salesman lied about the contents of the extensive and awkwardly written terms and conditions
    – Unreliable and overpriced alarm system
    – Aggressive sales staff (after we had already bought..)
    – Extortionate cancel charges
    – Poor customer service

    I bought there equipment and paid the installation fee – all over $1,000. for a simple 2 bedroom house. Monitoring fee started at 24.99/month and increased every year.A “service” appointed was going to cost $180./ just to show up. I am now paying just under $50./month. The equipment seems fine (you can find it on Amazon) but they are pricing themselves out of business. I am switching to another company.

I called when their representative failed to show up, they paged him, he returned my call and said that he had overslept, I am looking for a different company to represnt our interest.

    ADT has the worst Customer Service I had my alarm system installed 3 weeks ago. They installed the system and after installation was completed they gave me a paper and told me that I must check with my town to see if permits were needed. What kind of bullshit is that? I went right away to the town office and of course I needed permits. I am so upset it has been three weeks and no one calls me back and I have no status on my permits. I don’t know how long I will be their customer for.

    ADT Ii only a bait and switch company. I explained every window and door of my house. I was told my installation fee was 99.00 and my service fee would be 27.99 a month. When the man came to install the system , it tuned out to be over 8 thousand dollars and 53.99 a month service fee, A total rip off . Extremely disappointed in ADT. I would never recommend them.     If you sell your home and move to a secured apartment out of state you are still required to pay up your contract. I had no choice to move because husband passed away. They are holding to over a $900 payout. Very hard to work with. All they want is their money. They don’t care about your situation. Buyer be ware.

    I had a Sales Rep come to my door to activate an old ADT system, I informed him I was not interested, so he became rude and snatched my ADT signed out of my yard without informing me…. REALLY….. I will NEVER go back to ADT….

    Do not use ADT! The salesman was a fast-talking con artist. My husband and I felt pressured to sign a contract without having time to read it. The salesman lied and told us we could cancel anytime. The contract is for 36 months, and if you try to cancel, you have to pay an incredibly large sum of money! Customer service is rude and antagonistic, and the actual alarm service itself is defective. Please don’t make the mistake that we did!

    I do not understand how ADT has such a high BBB rating when a simple Google search shows terrible ratings across the board. This is why I chose to write my review on this website. I had ADT on a rental home and they would not let me get out of the contract despite their “guarantee”. When I purchased a home, I was forced to stay with them becuase of my contract. An ADT rep came to my house when I purchased it, and promised me personal service, and we talked about all the places that would be wired, and old equipment that would be replaced. We also agreed that the price would be comparable to what I was paying in my old home. Fast forward, I move from my old home, ADT makes me close out the old contract, start a new contract at a higher price. The tech shows up, the sales rep is nowhere to be found and doesn’t answer his phone, THEY DON’T WIRE ANYTHING ON THE SECOND FLOOR STATING IT WILL COST EXTRA FOR EVERY ADDITIONAL WINDOW. Within 48 hours of them leaving, an alarm they installed on one of the exterior doors malfunctions and they don’t fix it for 5 more days. All this for the BASIC coverage at $44/month. I can’t say anything about any of the other services, but the second my contract is done I will be moving to another provider as ADT is a terrible crooked company.

    We had our home broken into some years ago, but today, I once again feel robbed, preyed upon and vulnerable..
    This time, it is the service we choose for peace of mind that have taken from us: ADT.

    You will read similar warnings on blogs, comments, feeds and other online reviews – if you haven’t already signed a contract – then you’re luckier than most, keep your money and find another way of keeping you and your possessions safe!

    Don’t sign with ADT!!

    It’s no surprise they score 1.9/10 on ‘Best Home Security Companies’ by 648 reviewers..

    Here is why:

    No Free Installation With Traditional Plan
    36-Month Contract Required
    Outrageous cancellation terms
    Excessively long call times
    Pushy sales tactics
    Regularly increases monthly fee for no reason
    Requires written, signed-for letters to acknowledge any customer requests/complaints
    Many Negative User Reviews
    Plethora of BBB Complaints

    If you read this and ADT manage to convince you, when you do eventually become disaffected, write your own post and share with others.

    It is only by sharing the information and by buying services that are ethical, fair and transparent that we can shape the industry for the better and rid the market of companies like ADT.

    We deserve better.

    I just signed on with ADT. My alarm just went off, not cleared no cops called, ADT representative never called. Have been on the line well for over 10 minutes and not one customer service representative picked up-beware of this company. THANK GOD for burglar bars, I can’t rely on ADT.

    Terrible customer service! Agents do not care – they just tell you the options and do not try to resolve the problem. If you are happy, you pay your bill, if you are no, they will trick someone else into replacing your business. Product has lots of problems and their standard response is sit at home for hours and wait for us – we may actually show up. And if your service/product still does not work, lets just keep coming out and collect the monthly charge in the meantime.

    ADT wasn’t able to repair an ongoing problem, attempted 3 times with no results.
    I had no service for several month, ADT called my home phone that has no voicemail option instead calling my cell phone. When I called and mentioned that I had not have service for several months, there was no apology or anything to resolve the matter. The worst customer service ever.

    Their services are contracted to other alarm companies, in San Antonio, this was Safestreet USA. We were led to believe that the system in our home was inoperable and we needed to have their system placed. Inoperable and incompatible are completely different. The previous owner’s alarm company stopped by to see if we would like to activate (before I told him ADT told us their system was inoperable) for 39.95/month to turn on system. I called ADT to complain about misleading information to no avail and now we are stuck with a $50/month for 3 yrs and paid approximately $800 for triggers on a few windows and doors. So angry.     Terrible cancellation process…. would never recommend ADT to anyone nor would I ever use them again. We sold our home with in our 36 month period and they want $ 719.00 to cancel the service. Ridiculous that you have to transfer or pay a huge penalty…..

    Horrible experience with ADT, twice. First was when I tried to fix a problem, and ADT Customer service did not have any appointment for 1 wk, which means, you pay for for service, but do not receive it until ADT’s availability, and we are talking about a company that sells protection for your home.
    Second, I moved, I tried to schedule another appointment to have the system installed, they did not have an appointment for the weekend, so I had to wait 10 days for it, and when the day arrived, ADT did not call, but around 3PM, the appointment was set between 12-5PM, I called to confirm it and that’s when I was notified it was not going to be possible to happen, as I tool 1/2 day off to be at home for this appointment.

    DO NOT GET IN THIS TRAP, ADT CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE WORSE OUT THERE!

    AVOID ADT!

    Horrible experience. 2months into my contract I needed new ac adapters for my cameras. Was quoted $400 for the service call and repair. Ended up getting new adapters off ebay for $20.

    I was 2.5yrs i to my 3yr contrant and ADT decides to up my bill with 6mos to go. I ended up cancelling the contract. But like alot of other people, exiting the contract was rather painful. First rep only cancelled my security but left my cctv active. I filed a BBB complaint to recoop my termination fee because adt decided to change my rate when I was under contract. Long story short, adt corp said no because it was in the actual contract in the fine print. But the sales guy who came to our house to set up everything told us there would be no increase in monthly svc charges for 3yrs due to the signed contract. Which.. after reading the fine print, the clause is in there. So after some phone tag woth adt corp, I found out my cctv was still active, a month after I cancelled. Finally, I had adt corp deactivate my entire acct.

    Adt is by far one of the worst companies Ive ever had to deal with.
