Alarm Zone offers an affordable home security solution, providing free equipment with even their basic level home monitoring contract. While you install the equipment yourself, The GE Simon 3 and XT monitors are designed for consumer use and do not require complex wiring. The GE sensors are reputable for their reliability which should help you sleep at night.
The Good
Alarm Zone offers great flexibility. You can choose between phone, broadband, and cellular monitoring, and you can easily relocate equipment and monitoring to a new residence. It is easy to add additional sensors to doors and windows, and Alarm Zone offers numerous add-ons at a reasonable cost, such as GPS monitoring for your vehicle and extreme weather sensors.
The Bad
Alarm Zone’s website is short on information. Monitoring is actually performed by Protect America Inc. (PAI), and nowhere is it mentioned from where the monitoring occurs or the number of employees on-hand. The website does not offer installation how-to material such as installation videos and FAQs, and customer support is only available by phone. For a self-install company, this lack of how-to information should give you pause if you have lack experience with home security equipment.
While Alarm Zone’s monthly price is reasonable, even the Premier package lacks features standard to most modern home security systems. Of note is the absence of a smartphone app for remote alarm control and home automation (e.g. thermostat and lighting control), and carbon monoxide sensors for carbon monoxide detection. You should also be aware that all contracts with Zone Alarm contain an automatic roll-over clause, which means your contract will be renewed automatically unless you request otherwise. New customers have 14 days to cancel their service before the 36-month agreement kicks in. If you decide to cancel your service during the 14 day cancellation period, a $79 restocking fee applies.
The Bottom Line
You should consider Alarm Zone if you have straightforward monitoring needs and are comfortable installing home electronics with minimal support. You might also consider Alarm Zone if you require flexibility: The GE Simon 3 unit can be connected through landline, broadband, and cellular, and the system can be easily moved if you relocate.
