Allied Fire and Security was one of the most reputable, family-owned regional businesses that we reviewed for home security monitoring and systems. Allied Fire and Security has served Northwest homes and businesses since 1948. They provide home monitoring services, which are also, cross compatible with small businesses. One of the things that we found out about Allied Fire and Security was that they are also heavily involved in the regional community. Their community support helps organizations such as the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and other community-based organizations.

Allied was also pretty certified when it came to professional memberships and certifications. We found that they were members of Electronic Security Association, NFPA, ASIS International, and the Associated Locksmiths of America, some of the most well-known security industry organizations in the country. They also have won regional awards around the Pacific Northwest.

The Good

There was a lot that we liked about Allied Fire and Security, outside of their strong history and business reputation. The first thing that we liked was the different security systems that were available. The three packages offer the right amount of protection for different homes. The Allied Connect plan has wireless web control enabled, so you can access your system via your tablet, phone, or the web. You can also depend upon the free upgrade of a fire sensor. The Allied Connect comes with wireless Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity, while the Allied Secure and Allied Secure Plus packages lets you choose between a landline or a cellular enabled system. These great systems came with 3 door/window sensors or 2 door/window sensors, depending upon the system purchased.

We also liked the Allied moving plan. This was a great feature if you suddenly have to move while in the middle of a contract. If you’re 24 months into your contract, Allied makes it easy to move to a new location. There are also additional discounts (up to 20%) on equipment upgrades if you are eligible for the moving contract.

The Bad

While Allied had some good points on their products and service, there were a few causes of concern. When a new customer visits the website, the website suggests that the purchase of the plan entails free monitoring. When you read the fine print, the customer is actually available for only one or two months of free monitoring, depending upon certain conditions, such as whether or not they set up auto pay for their account.

Another concern we had was in areas where cellular phone coverage was not available. We couldn’t get a clear answer from the website on coverage for if our home didn’t have a landline-based (POTS) connection.

We would also like to see pay plans available for systems that cost less than $199. On the website, the advertised systems were for the “basic” service level. Each plan can be upgraded with additional sensors, but a complete listing of how this would impact the pricing was not included. Some other companies in the industry list the cost for additional door sensors, glass break sensors, etc. Additionally, we didn’t see any glass break sensors included in the basic plan. Some home security services do provide this.

The Bottom Line

We recommend Allied Fire and Security for commercial buildings. They have a solid reputation with customers, and the Better Business Bureau. They also offer affordable, entry-level security systems that are compatible for both residences and small businesses. They also called us back after we had to leave a message for information on one of their sales associate’s voicemails.
