After being a loyal customer for over four years, I was the unfortunate recipient of a $430 plus final payment charge. Their service left much to be desired as they were quite slow to respond and failed to call myself (the primary) on the account when the fire alarm or other issues caused an alarm engagement. I was surprised several times when the fire truck arrived. As far as the charge, I had signed a contract that stated I must keep the account engaged for five years otherwise I would need to pay the remaining months which frankly is ridiculous. Most companies will have a small monthly fee for those remaining in a contract rather than the entire amount. I was not informed that this was in fact the case until the monthly amount was withdrawn again for the month after I had moved even though I had called several times trying to make sure there were no issues with my cancellation. I say RUN do not use this company regardless of what they call themselves Moni or BRINKS.Read More

They will squeeze every dime and no compassion at all. My husband has had a serious decline in his health requested to drop contract after two years and it will cost in the thousands to do so. If you sell the house and new home owner does not want the system you will pay a pretty penny to cancel service. So if you are a senior or some one whos health is not the best this system and contract will eat up your saving to get out of the contract. Nursing homes does not need a unit to follow you and if you move with your kids they do not want your system you are still paying. Veterans the same goes for you . So please consider your health when signing a contract unless you have over a thousands to buy out contract you will have a new debt. And for some reason Brink is now our provider I did not sign a contract with them so them moral of this story they can sell your contract with no notice or option to cancel. The salesman's promise the moon and how he would stay in touch NEVER heard for him again. Just food for thought if you go with this companyRead More

The Good

  • Multiple equipment packages
  • Low upfront costs
  • False alarm protection
  • Flexible moving options
Multiple Equipment Packages

Moni Smart Security offers great smart home technology and equipment for both home security and home automation. There are three equipment plans for customers to choose from Basic, HomeTouch, and HomeTouch Premier. Each of the three plans includes basic system components, such as alarm monitoring services, a control panel, motion sensors, window sensors, and door sensors. The two higher plans provide extra features such as security cameras, remote system control, and text alerts. Other smart home technologies and alarm monitoring equipment, such as video doorbell security cameras, are also available. A mobile app for iPhone and Android users that acts as a remote control panel with many features. Users can access their Skybell HD camera and utilize the two-way voice feature. With multiple plans available to them, customers have the ability to find an option that best meets their home security needs and budget.

Low Upfront Costs

Moni Smart Security will provide its customers with free equipment and installation (minus a few exceptions), keeping upfront costs low and affordable. However, there are some fees to be aware of—more on those below.

False Alarm Protection

False alarms aren’t incredibly common, but they do happen. Moni Smart Security offers a number of protection features to help customers in the event of a false alarm. For example, the company will cover up to two false alarms each year. Additionally, Moni Smart Security will reimburse customers up to $50 for each false alarm. Few home security companies offer any type of false alarm protection, making Moni Smart Security unique in this regard.

Flexible Moving Options

Moni Smart Security offers free moving services to customers who have had a security system for at least a year and are up to date on their monthly payments. This offer comes with the option to extend the terms of the contract at the current rate for up to 24 months. If the customer is not interested in moving the system to their new home, Moni Smart Security will allow them to transfer the contract to their homebuyer or pay off the remaining balance.

The Bad

  • Long-term contracts
  • High monthly rates and activation fees
  • Possible rate increases
Long-Term Contracts

All Moni Smart Security plans require that customers sign into a binding three to five-year contract for alarm monitoring services. While three years is the average contract length in the home security industry, there are some companies that offer a shorter contract length or do not require customers to sign an annual contract at all.

Higher Monthly Rates and Activation Fees

Although Moni Smart Security offers free equipment and installations, the company’s monthly alarm monitoring rates are quite a bit higher than those of other top-rated security system providers. For example, Moni Smart Security monitoring service prices start at $34.95 per month and only go up from there. In addition to steep monthly rates, the company also charges a sizable activation fee, which, depending on the package, can set customers back up to $149. Customer satisfaction reviews have suffered as a result.

Possible Rate Increases

The monthly rates advertised by Moni Smart Security are based on a 36 to 60-month monitoring agreement. However, actual rates could increase after 12 months, leaving customers locked into a contract and paying a higher rate than they were expecting.

The Bottom Line

Moni Smart Security has over two decades of experience in the home security industry. The company offers multiple equipment packages, flexible moving options, and false alarm protection. Moni Smart Security advertises free equipment and installations, but charges steep activation fees and requires its customers to sign into lengthy contracts with high monthly monitoring rates. Consumers who are considering Moni Smart Security should also be aware that the company reserves the right to increase rates after the first 12 months. See all Moni Smart Security reviews below.

MONI Smart Security (formerly Monitronics) received the highest numerical score among 6 brands in the J.D. Power 2016 Home Security Satisfaction Report, based on 2,282 total responses, measuring the opinions of customers who purchased a home security system in the previous 12 months, surveyed August-September 2016. Your experiences may vary.

Horrible customer service! Closed my account and went with another company, sent them a letter indicating service was changed on the 28th of the month. When, after several phone calls, I reached the advocate he said I would continue to be charged until the 4th of the following month. I was not as aggravated by the money as I was the principal of what was done. I paid up front for service and equipment, I was with them for 3 years. I plan to provide negative advertising about the company free of charge!

I have been trying to cancel monitronics for 4 years!!!!!
I signed up when I lived in the city for a house I was renting. that was in 2008!
the guy that signed up said it was a month to month contract.
I called when we left that house in 2010, they told me I had a 5 year contract and I had to pay them some $3,800!!!
I tried and tried, they would not stop charging me. I have called and asked to cancel many many times.
Finally after paying them for 4 years of service I didn’t use!! and ask even after my supposed 5 year contract was up! I stopped payment from my bank account! Now they are telling me they will send my amount past do to collections!!! THEY OWE ME $2,400!!!!
DO NOT TRUST THESE GUYS, THEY ARE LIARS!!!

Initially when I signed up with monitronics it was good. Then it all went down hill. I ended up selling my house and moving to a new one in the mountains. I called them to make sure they serviced this area and that my system would work. I had the Cellular controller. It sent signals out by using Verizon. I have cell service at my house. A third part came and installed the system in the new house. I needed to add some door sensors and they were outrageously priced. I could not believe it. I did some checking online and come to find out they were priced the highest. A couple weeks after having the system I started to get a error code. Monitronics sent out a 3rd party. Mind you monitronics told me I would not be billed for this. Come to find out that was not accurate. I ended getting nailed for 300 dollars plus. Called monitronics and they were rude and nasty. The thing is with this company is the refuse to xfer you to a manager. I have asked to talk to a manager a million times and have only twice. There not available or there on other calls. Most likely because they SUCK. They will call you back Never happens. Recently I canceled with them due to more errors with the system. Long story short never could get in touch with a manager, they wanted to charge me out the ting yang to get out of my contract. They lied constantly to me. Would not let me cancel and tried manipulating me into staying then wanting me to extend my contract. All i wanted was out. After about two weeks I got out. No fee. Due to there system being a piece of crap. I have friends that have ADT. They have never had any trouble. The sad thing is when the 3rd party alarm tech came out to fix the unit he had told me they are by far the worst company and scam people all the time and as him being a 3rd party tech he said he is constantly working on there systems and have heard nothing but negative things about there customer service and company. If you don’t want a headache or being scammed stay away from MONITRONICS. There customer service people are nasty and there manager (the two i talked too) are freaking horrible. Im so happy I’m not sending them my money anymore. I hope they go bankrupt. STAY AWAY FROM MONITRONICS!!!!!

I never had a negative thing to say about monitronic until 2 days ago when a tech came out to check a small problem we had with our system battery but ended up wiping our system data and leaving us without security for 7 days. 7 days is how long it takes for monitronic to send a tech to your house to fix a major issue such as a system failure.
After several hours over the course of two days and begging for someone to come out earlier for the security of my family we were told that we can get a months credit
7 days is unacceptable when it comes to safety and security. We tried to cancel and would have gone with another security company who could set up a new installation sooner than 7 days but we were reminded that we were BOUND by a contract.
This is the worst customer service experience I have ever encountered. I cannot wait until next year when I can cancel and set up with another company who cares more about keeping their promise of keeping their customers safe.

I am writing this for my 88 year old mother for which I have POA. She has had a Monitronics system for a number of years and sold her home in 2013 to move into a nursing home. She has had a terrible experience with them. First, shortly after my father died a rep visited her and sold her the system and a FIVE year contract. I have had lots of security systems and have never heard of such a long term contract. I think he was taking advantage of both her age and her vulnerability as a widow. Over a year ago she was not using the system and beginning writing them to cancel the service but continued to make payments. Finally she stopped making payments but now they are sending her past due notices and bounced check fees. I am going to write them one more letter on her behalf and then contact the Better Business Bureau and the Texas Attorney General’s Office. They have made more than enough money off of her and the salesman should never have taken advantage of her in the first place. Beware!

We have used Monitronics for 4 years and have been pleased. The app works well, and we did not have any troubles with false alarms, cameras not working, etc. Changing batteries yourself is a breeze, and you are notified through the mobile system when they are running low. Each user can have their own entry code, so I know which kid made it home from school at what time. Definitely built for the mobile user. No complaints here.

Beware of the no cancellation policy. I was sold a 60 month policy and moved after 3 years with 33 months remaining. You are expected by Monitronics to pay the remainder of the contract whether or not you use their service. As many of the other customer review note, customer service is nonexistent. This is a predatory group — RUN AWAY.

I just want to say they have the worst customer service. We fulfilled our contract and was on a month to month,No contract, how can they charge you if you cancel ? The guy was running down all the other company in our area. On Friday I sent and letter of termination, before our month was up and he said he was cancel it. (he said if I mail the letter he would terminate the service) Today he said no,they would debt our account, because we had to give them 30 days notice. Bless their hearts, they are just liars.

Their customer service is non-existent. A call can take up to 5 minutes and you must go through several phone trees, in the end often receiving a message that says please call back during normal business hours!!

This for an alarm company that boasts if 24/7 protection?? The only thing they are good at us taking your money. What a total mistake in signing up with them!

As far as technology goes, it is a good system. You can peek in the house if you have a camera, turn off the alarm remotely, have an automatic reminder to set the alarm, etc.
However, their customer service is a joke. I just transferred the system to the new homeowners. They are now being paid by the new homeowner–and still debiting my checking account. I was on the phone for almost 1 hour yesterday. They gave me the run around, and when I asked to speak to a supervisor he was conveniently busy. He was supposed to call me back–still waiting. I just had to call my bank and put procedures in place to block them from making any more deductions. Worse than ADT–and I did not think that was possible.

There billing system is antiquated to say the least. Inaccurate bills. Cannot separate service work from electronic withdrawals. This leads to inaccurate billings with inaccurate and deceiving billing statements. I believe it is intentional to get naive customers to overpay.

What a nightmare to cancel my service with them!!!! I fulfilled my 3 year contract and they are still sending me bills after I have sent them a written cancellation, 1 month before the end of my contract like they requested. I called and cancelled again, when they sent me a bill for another month after my contract was expired. They reassured me once again that my contract was cancelled and they would remove the charge. (after a long sales pitch on how they want to help me). Now I get a voicemail congratulating me on my move and they will be at my house to install their alarm system this week I called them and told them that was a mistake and now the guy tells me rhat they just received my cancellation letter a couple weeks ago and I have another month of service to pay for!!!!! I told them I’ve read on the Internet how so many have said how hard it is to get them to stop billing you and they reassured me that’s only for people who haven’t finished their contract. That was Definitely not the case for me! I honored my end of the deal now they need to leave me alone and stop sending me bills!!!!!!!!!!!! I WILL NEVER DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in the process of canceling my service as I had moved. It was too involved of a process…one step was for me to fax them my security code and to confirm that I really wanted to cancel even though they knew who I was.
But the worse was yet to come. Before I faxed the confirmation to them I was taken to the hospital. I had congestive heart failure! I stayed for a week after the procedure and had to recuperate at home. Within a month I was back in the hospital for another heart procedure. Back home after a week and within a month I was back in the hospital. This time it was a triple by-pass for my heart etc. During this time Monitronics kept charging me even though the agent had advised me that my account was closed and the fax was merely a formality. So I contacted Monitronics explaining my situation but only go silence. Meanwhile their agents are calling relatives to put the squeeze on for their money. I’ve tried several times to straighten this out but have no response to me e-mails etc.
They are calloused and cold hearted with no concern for those they are supposed to be helping.
They are the ugly 1% and one of those corporations that claim to be humans, too. I will pay the bill as that is how I do business but will be letting as many know as possible just what kind of company this is and that their workers are just as bad as the big bosses as they have bought into this culture and someone could have given me a break. The bills are mounting and if my cancellation was honored that extra money would be very helpful right now.
    Monitornics Sucks!!

I have had Monitronics for over three years, which was our contract term. I called yesterday to cancel the service. My complaints were that the installed siren could hardly be heard just five feet away from it. The monitoring charges have continually increased yearly. The battery died. I called them last month to get a new battery which I did receive. Just yesterday I received a Bill from them from them indicating I needed to pay $30 for a drop ship for the battery. When I called to cancel the service I was told I had to send them a letter with my data, such as the Code, the account # and my signature. Their rules are such that I am stuck paying for another month’s worth of service when in fact the system has been broken for a while now. I replaced the system with a SimpliSafe solution. It is completely wireless and I can install it myself. Monitoring is not a requirement but I chose to use that which is 40% of what Monitronics charges for a month. The whole thing is a racket with Monitronics.

I called to cancel my service on 06/01/14. I was on hold for 10 minutes before a representative answered only to find out a special representative needed to cancel my account. The rep confirmed I would not have to remain on hold for that long again. I was on hold for 30 minutes until the 2nd rep answered. I said I needed to cancel my service and was quickly dumped into another que. This is infuriating when all I want to do is cancel my account. The customer service skills with this company are terrible! Hold times are unbelievably long. So I finally spoke to a rep who was able to help me only to find out we would have to pay $900 to buy ourselves out of our contract. We don’t own the home! You’ve got to be kidding! I well never use this company again.

We signed up with Monitronics several years ago because we liked the salesperson and the price was lower than ADT. After several years with the company (with no alarm issues) we decided to cancel and switch to Xfinity. They were offering a much lower rate and they had more up to date equipment and technology available.
Now the problem with Monitronics was cancellation. I called their customer service department to cancel and was told they would need it in writing. I wrote a letter and when I went to their website for a fax number, I did not find out. I found a Texas address and mailed the letter. I was told I would be charged for one more month before the cancellation went through. I have now gotten billed for the 3rd month and am having a heck of a time getting them to cancel and return my money.
I would never use this company and would not recommend them to anyone.
My big question is if they are this poor at handling customer issues, how good could they be at monitoring and defending your home?

Awful. Customer service sucks. installed the system in November of 2013, and had service tech out in March to change the batteries for $50 service fee. (NO 12 month guarantee???) My batteries are dying again and a tech was supposed to come out between 11-2 today. It’s 6:16 and I’ve been on hold for 24 minutes.

Initially I was really upset with monitronics, However this was more relating to the sales company “PINNACLE’ reps who installed the system and said I had a two year contract when it was in fact 3.
So I stuck it out for another year and a half and called to cancel my service and would have been able to do so, However having knowledge on the alarm system scammers out there I called them up and decided to work out a upgrade and maintenance deal.

So I will be staying on board with monitronics, getting the newer Simon XTI digital panel, 1 new door sensor for the door I didnt have one installed on, my motion sensor is going to be moved to a place it is more effective and. sensor batteries replaced and new signs and stickers for Monitronics instead of pinnacle. Now I will be able to monitor with a cell phone and add cool features such as door locks and lighting in the future.

I gave the company a 6 simply because they were easy to deal with and they are making some attempt to right a wrong.

I estimate my equipment originally upheld by pinnacle was going bad around 1.5-2 years ago. the backup battery has not worked in some time for those days that power decides to go out. There have been occasions where we accidentally set off the alarm and we didnt receive a call or anything … I am going to call our local police non emergency number and make sure we dont have to have a permit autorized for emergency events and contact with monitronics.Either way our equipment has never been inspected or checked on, we never received a call about backup battery being low or none of that. So initially the service was terrible but I think that will change going forward and free upgrades definately makes staying with the company much more desireable as I have read bad things about alot of companies such as this.

We started with them 2 years ago for a 1 year contract by the sales rep ended up making it a 2 year contract. We found out later that they did not work with our phone company so we were told that they needed to send out a tech to upgrade our system. We declined and asked to be let out of our contract but they insisted we honor it.
We ended up fulfilling our end of the contract and told that we could submit terms to end the contract in May.
I talked to their phone rep and all they wanted to do was question me on continuing and that I could not cancel until it was in writing and I should have done that in April NOT May.
Found out that they charged me another month payment, I called again and this rep tried to tell me my contract doesn’t end until July.
No one attempted to make amends for the mistakes, just attempted to get me to upgrade services. They also do not upgrade their information for 30 days. So, if you move and the new place gets broken into, they will not let you know until after the system renews information 30+ days later.

I WAS A CUSTOMER FOR OVER 10 YEARS
SERVICE WAS GREAT TILL DECIDED TO CANCEL THE SERVICE..

WE MADE OUR FINAL PAYMENT AND SENT A LETTER, BUT TO NO AVAIL. ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NOT USED THE SERVICE FOR MANY MONTHS, THEY CONTINUE TO BILL US.

MY ADVICE, STAY AWAY FROM THEM, THEY ARE WORSE THAN THE MAFIA.

NO CONCERN about leaving u with a system that u have to reset every 6-8 hours when main battery dies for 8-15 DAYS. SAID BY CUSTMER SERVICE &CUSTOMER REPAIR or DISCONNECT! Wake the babies, elderly, or loose sleep they wont bring u a battery;keep paying tho! Cant wait to spread the truth about them!

Had monotonics for 2 1/2 years another company knocked on our door and my husband decIded to make a switch to vivint they didn’t finish installing our system. And broke some of our old equipment weeks of calling of trying to get vivint to finish the install with no luck and rude representatives. One call to Monitronics and they took care of us including helping us get out of that horrible contract with the other company. Thank you monitronics for all your help!

BEWARE – We have had their service for appx 20 months, and just recently sold our home. When we called to cancel service we were told we owed a $500 cancellation fee – per the contract we signed. We did NOT sign a contract (took over an existing contract from previous home owner) and Monitronics is unwilling (or unable) to provide a copy of the alleged contract – a contract we do not have a copy of since we didn’t sign one. We were informed they fully intended to continue billing us for another 17 months, even though we no longer own the home.

Just a small amount of web research turns up a history of billing problems with Monitronics – they make a habit of screwing their customers if they leave.

BEWARE OF MONITRONICS. Keep a copy of ANYTHING you sign.

We will be glad when our contact is up. We pay 50.99 and everytime we leave home so zone goes off it is a 50.00 service call each time they come out. And to have cameras they are 900.00 each. Not happy at all

Sales REP took me for a ride, Make SURE you READ the FINE PRINT ON YOUR CONTRACT, SALES REP SOLD ME 2 EXTRA DEVICES, Smoke Alarm and motion detector , SALES REP told ME WE WILL ONLY BE CHARGE AN EXTRA $5.99 A MONTH FOR 1 YEAR for the 2 DEVICES and then it would go back to $30.00 a month. After the ONE YEAR THE PRICE IS THE SAME AND IT WENT UP $1.00. THE COMPANY MONTRONICS CAN RAISE YOUR RATES ANYTIME THEY WANT WITHOUT YOUR AUTHORIZATION . We got the monthly service for $30 a month and for another $5.99 for one year ,

Been having too many problems with their billing dept. Tired of fighting over a bill that is a month or more overdue because they forget to send a notice of bill that is due.

I had an install in my new home, the install went well and the person doing it even wore booties! Service on the equipment works well and I have had some custom up grades done on my pad over the phone. The up grades were handled with excellent knowage of the system.

My only complaint was with the monthly billing. The bill was due on the 17th of the month and automatically taken out, which I agreed to. After about two payments they stared collecting a day early, then two and even up to a week. At times this over drafted my bank account. I had to cancel auto payments and am now forced to log into the website monthly to pay my bill.

I’ve had service for 20+ years, great service! Our dog set off alarm once and they called cell and our other family contact. Other than fairly high bill, very pleased.

Horrible service. Discontinued monitoring in June but they continued to charge us until sept. It was an act of congress to get the service discontinued in the first place. It was everything just short of my first born child to disconnect, even thought the contract had been up for 5 yrs. customer service and support is a joke. Always put on hold. DO NOT use this company!!!

Overall we have been happy with them, they have responded quickly over the system when it has gone off and another time our dog set our alarm off and they called our cell phones, while concurrently listening into our house for any possible noise. After checking into several other monitoring companies we have chosen to have them install in our new house also.

Very expensive and not the best support. Equipment and features are very good. Pros and cons just like other security systems I’ve used before.
