After being a loyal customer for over four years, I was the unfortunate recipient of a $430 plus final payment charge. Their service left much to be desired as they were quite slow to respond and failed to call myself (the primary) on the account when the fire alarm or other issues caused an alarm engagement. I was surprised several times when the fire truck arrived. As far as the charge, I had signed a contract that stated I must keep the account engaged for five years otherwise I would need to pay the remaining months which frankly is ridiculous. Most companies will have a small monthly fee for those remaining in a contract rather than the entire amount. I was not informed that this was in fact the case until the monthly amount was withdrawn again for the month after I had moved even though I had called several times trying to make sure there were no issues with my cancellation. I say RUN do not use this company regardless of what they call themselves Moni or BRINKS.Read More

They will squeeze every dime and no compassion at all. My husband has had a serious decline in his health requested to drop contract after two years and it will cost in the thousands to do so. If you sell the house and new home owner does not want the system you will pay a pretty penny to cancel service. So if you are a senior or some one whos health is not the best this system and contract will eat up your saving to get out of the contract. Nursing homes does not need a unit to follow you and if you move with your kids they do not want your system you are still paying. Veterans the same goes for you . So please consider your health when signing a contract unless you have over a thousands to buy out contract you will have a new debt. And for some reason Brink is now our provider I did not sign a contract with them so them moral of this story they can sell your contract with no notice or option to cancel. The salesman's promise the moon and how he would stay in touch NEVER heard for him again. Just food for thought if you go with this companyRead More

The Good

  • Multiple equipment packages
  • Low upfront costs
  • False alarm protection
  • Flexible moving options
Multiple Equipment Packages

Moni Smart Security offers great smart home technology and equipment for both home security and home automation. There are three equipment plans for customers to choose from Basic, HomeTouch, and HomeTouch Premier. Each of the three plans includes basic system components, such as alarm monitoring services, a control panel, motion sensors, window sensors, and door sensors. The two higher plans provide extra features such as security cameras, remote system control, and text alerts. Other smart home technologies and alarm monitoring equipment, such as video doorbell security cameras, are also available. A mobile app for iPhone and Android users that acts as a remote control panel with many features. Users can access their Skybell HD camera and utilize the two-way voice feature. With multiple plans available to them, customers have the ability to find an option that best meets their home security needs and budget.

Low Upfront Costs

Moni Smart Security will provide its customers with free equipment and installation (minus a few exceptions), keeping upfront costs low and affordable. However, there are some fees to be aware of—more on those below.

False Alarm Protection

False alarms aren’t incredibly common, but they do happen. Moni Smart Security offers a number of protection features to help customers in the event of a false alarm. For example, the company will cover up to two false alarms each year. Additionally, Moni Smart Security will reimburse customers up to $50 for each false alarm. Few home security companies offer any type of false alarm protection, making Moni Smart Security unique in this regard.

Flexible Moving Options

Moni Smart Security offers free moving services to customers who have had a security system for at least a year and are up to date on their monthly payments. This offer comes with the option to extend the terms of the contract at the current rate for up to 24 months. If the customer is not interested in moving the system to their new home, Moni Smart Security will allow them to transfer the contract to their homebuyer or pay off the remaining balance.

The Bad

  • Long-term contracts
  • High monthly rates and activation fees
  • Possible rate increases
Long-Term Contracts

All Moni Smart Security plans require that customers sign into a binding three to five-year contract for alarm monitoring services. While three years is the average contract length in the home security industry, there are some companies that offer a shorter contract length or do not require customers to sign an annual contract at all.

Higher Monthly Rates and Activation Fees

Although Moni Smart Security offers free equipment and installations, the company’s monthly alarm monitoring rates are quite a bit higher than those of other top-rated security system providers. For example, Moni Smart Security monitoring service prices start at $34.95 per month and only go up from there. In addition to steep monthly rates, the company also charges a sizable activation fee, which, depending on the package, can set customers back up to $149. Customer satisfaction reviews have suffered as a result.

Possible Rate Increases

The monthly rates advertised by Moni Smart Security are based on a 36 to 60-month monitoring agreement. However, actual rates could increase after 12 months, leaving customers locked into a contract and paying a higher rate than they were expecting.

The Bottom Line

Moni Smart Security has over two decades of experience in the home security industry. The company offers multiple equipment packages, flexible moving options, and false alarm protection. Moni Smart Security advertises free equipment and installations, but charges steep activation fees and requires its customers to sign into lengthy contracts with high monthly monitoring rates. Consumers who are considering Moni Smart Security should also be aware that the company reserves the right to increase rates after the first 12 months. See all Moni Smart Security reviews below.

MONI Smart Security (formerly Monitronics) received the highest numerical score among 6 brands in the J.D. Power 2016 Home Security Satisfaction Report, based on 2,282 total responses, measuring the opinions of customers who purchased a home security system in the previous 12 months, surveyed August-September 2016. Your experiences may vary.

You get in cannot get out they trick you on contract and try not to cancel it. It’s nightmare if you try cancel your service. They told me I can cancel anytime even contract is not over just pay the cost of the difference, but when I cancel they didn’t want to cancel for you. I have 3 yrs contract after 4 yrs I try to cancel they changed they said I have 5 yrs contract and don’t want to cancel it. Do not use them or you will be sorry.

Good luck trying to cancel. I called today to cancel and the lady would not shut up trying to talk me out of it. I was actually screaming at her to just cancel my service as she was going on and on about their great deals. I wasted 30 minutes arguing with her only to find out i need to make sure i check my email for a cancellation letter to sign. I plan on going to my bank and blocking them from taking another dime out of it. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. THIS IS YOUR WARNING.

Moni doesn’t care about their customer’s time. I’ve been a customer for about seven years. The one time I need service, I have to take a day off from work to accommodate THEIR schedule. They do not do support in the evenings or on the weekends, so anyone with a 9-5 be prepared to use one of your precious vacation days. They’re not my favorite company. I’ll be looking for another security provider.

Not only is the call lengthy, but then there is back and forth with document signing and such. Worst of all is they will charge you for another 30 days! Even if you no longer have a phone on which their equipment can use to place a monitoring call – so you have to pay for no service!

I have been a Moni customer since December 2004. That’s 14 years. I know that people stay with banks that long but I don’t know many people who stay with a security company for that length of time.

Moni has met every expectation and in fact exceeded expectations working with me on every facet of my account including security needs and billing.

Moni’s customer service, products, knowledge, & pricing are superb.

I have had 14 years of steady, reliable products and services. Why would I want to change such a great long-term consumer relationship?

I trust Moni and you really should too.

After full filling my 5 yr contract, I spend a total of 25 minutes and have to talk to two different people to cancel my service which is $55+ a month.. Then they have to send you an email which is only good for 72 hrs for you to activate the cancellation.. If you don’t do this within 72 hrs you have to call them again.. They did not talk to be me this much when I started my account. So after paying almost $3500 for this 5 year service, you have to jump through hoops to cancel.. Big Surprise!!! any co can monitor nothing special with this co other than really hard to cancel service!!

Moni does business through minions who are really responsible for your system and repair. I got dumped to Assurance Alarm in Bakersfield and MONI refuses to help or intervien. Run! Do not do business with Assurance Alarm. I have had an open repair order from MONI for weeks and they do not respond and do not return phone calls. They have never completed the installation and I am still waiting for the doorbell camera they promised to install. The worst customer service is NO SERVICE and that is what I have gotten from Assurance. My home is unprotected with a broken system and they will not return calls to set uop repair. This is exactly what you do not want from an alarm company AVIOD ASSURANCE ALARM! Please contact me to verify this , you do not want to do business with these people.

MONITRONICS has the WORST customer service. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!! I moved into a new home with a Monitronics system already installed. We could not get in touch with the previous owners so I called for help because the system is beeping uncontrollably. We tried removing the batteries but due to the place of installment and how it’s installed into the wall we could not without ripping it out of the wall. In efforts to avoid this, I called customer service where Kia would not help because I “didn’t have an active account”. She proceeded to tell me that was on the previous owners because they should have taken it with them?!?!?! What…it’s installed into the wall…that’s against REAL ESTATE LAW!!! She kept saying it was against policy to help with their product since I wasn’t an active member and then would not transfer me to a manager because that was against their policy as well. THIS IS POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE…any manager should speak to anyone and it’s sketchy that they won’t. I was initially considering getting the account activated but their refusal to speak to me about one of THEIR products that’s currently in my new home just lost them a customer and I hope several more because I would hate for anyone to waste their money on a company where helping people with THEIR PRODUCT is not a priority.

I was stupid enough to sign a five your contract with this company I signed auto pay so will come directly out of my checking account . They started raising my price by 5% which they said was allowed in the contract. Since I had a five-year contract it was supposed to remain the same and not change. I talk to them and they said they would refund the money but they had taken and I took myself off auto pay. I can hardly wait for this contract to expire so I can cancel .

Not sure how a company like this stays in business. Salesperson shows up during move in and practically forces his way into our home. He sings and dances until we sign on his ipad screen just to get rid of him. We never get a copy of what we signed, never heard of the cancellation policy, never knew we needed a permit from local law enforcement. Alarm goes off one day and we learn about the permit needed. We did not know who our alarm company was or how to get ahold of them. After figuring that out, we ask for the information needed to obtain a permit. What they sent did not answer the law enforcement questions…what a hassle that became. Then when we had a fire and the fire alarm went off but we were not notified by Moni at all! What exactly are they monitoring? Couldn’t wait for this contract to end! They gladly take their inflated fees each month but you get nothing in return.

I started my service 50 months ago with a five year contract at $50 a month. The contract was much longer than what I wanted, and the price was much higher than competitors. The sales rep told me that I could get a discount on my home insurance which was a lie. I did not receive a discount on the home insurance from my bank. The sales rep also told me that the rate would never change due to the contact. This was also a lie because my rate has increased over 10% during the past four years. The sales rep set my account up for auto-pay which is not what I wanted. I prefer to pay with a credit card to earn points. The sales rep didn’t tell me about this website, and I just recently discovered it. I also didn’t know I could test the system and have wondered over the years if it even works. I have just moved from the home and will close on the sale soon. I want to cancel the service but am unable to do so on the website due to some unnecessary security requirement. Stay away from this company. They will lie to you, raise your rates without explanation, and provide no service.

I was done with my contract but cancelling service has been a nightmare. First it is an overly complex process, second they kept messing up so I had to call back, third they are still billing me two months later after I got a written notice that my service was cancelled. We have had Moni for a year or two. We finally had a call about security- told them to call Cops and waited for the cops to call. It turns out we are out in the country- it takes more than an hour to get someone out. We decided it was a waste of money. So I called to cancel- the guy was rude- talked for a good 10 minutes about how great they were on response times- I tried to interrupt him- but I believe he would have talked thru a fire alarm. Finally I got to tell him it was not his service but the third party (cops) that made this not work. He started in again about how good they were. i got very angry- he stopped- then said to me- “well you have a contract and have 21 months left”. Two complaints- they don’t care that there service is of no value- and WHY DID HE NOT TELL ME THAT IN THE BEGINNING! I will be canceling as soon as I have the 21 months of contract saved up. It will be interesting to see whether they let me out. Kind of like a ponzi scheme.

Warning!!! If you ever plan to cancel your service you have to complete an electronic cancellation form. After you submit the form, it takes 30 additional days before your account is actually cancelled.

During that time, they are still going to charge you for the service even though it shows your account is NOT active and has been cancelled. I think this is wrong and a way for them to get more money. It is not fair that they take an additional 30 days to cancel your contract after its cancelled. Please be aware of this when you cancel your contract.

A salesman approached my dad to install this security system. My dad agreed. Unfortunately, my dad has dementia. When the bill came through his bank account on the first month, I called the company (since I have power of attorney) to talk with them. The representative said there was nothing I could do because my dad wanted the system. I explained the health concern and that I had power of attorney. The representative said he would call and speak to my dad and call me back. I live out of town from my dad but said okay. The representative did not call me back so I called the company again. I was again told, there was nothing they could do. I asked them to lower the cost – nope, your dad wants this system. The family decided not to pursue anything since we thought maybe this would help keep him from wondering. Nope on that account too. He actually wondered into a highway during the middle of the night and walked for almost a mile.

I decided to call again in February to try again. This time I spoke with an extremely nice representative who actually understood our situation and told me all I needed to do was send my power of attorney and a letter stating my dad’s condition which I did. I then received a letter saying that the cancellation was incomplete. I called the company again and explained everything. They could cancel the account but still expected my dad to pay over $1000 to close out the account. No understanding of family situations at all.

My suggestion is that if a seller shows up at your door for this company, quickly close the door. Too much money for nothing. Some representatives are not friendly or helpful.

This company has been a nightmare! They are hands down the MOST expensive service in town and their equipment failed after 2 years. They sent a tech to my house and he said the only way to fix the issues were to sign another 5 year contract and get all new equipment. I stuck it out and paid my 5 years worth of service to honor the contract. When it comes down to cancel, their cancellation department only works bankers hours. And their have 20 minute hold times. I FINALLY got someone on the phone and they said they could not accept my cancellation over the phone. I escalated it to a supervisor and they assured me the service would be canceled last week. And 8 days later the service is still up and I have been on hold again for 20 minutes.

I cancelled my service in Oct 26th, 2017, They charged me again, Nov 14, 2017 for service in December, which I am not using, and have not used since June 2016. I payed till my contract was over. I called, cancelled, and found that they never received my hand written letter that was mailed on Oct 26th, 2017. Then they said they sent an email on Oct 26th, with a docusign, which I checked today, both spam and general email box, no such email was ever sent. Now, after I called, spoke to a supervisor, I am still not cancelled. He said he call the county and city which I reside in to cancell our service, which was never connected, etc etc etc. We moved in June of 2016 to a new location, did not take our equipment, left it with the new homeowner, and cancelled service to that location. They told me on the phone I had service to the old address, yet, I had given them the new one the same day we moved. This is all very unprofessional. My contract is over. I cancelled, and that should be it.

Locked my 80 year old mom into an 8 year contract with door to door solicitation. After 5 years of service she goes to assisted living and we send documentation they ask for to cancel, and after 3 months and untold time on the phone they cancel and refund one month, then send a bill and restart service without authorization on a bank draft this month. Terrible service and they are liars. Do business at your own risk. CROOKS!

Have had this security company for years and I go to cancel service, was transferred three times over 30 minutes wait time. Only to find out you have to give a 30 day notice of cancellation even if you don’t have a contract with them. So they continue changing you. This company has never been very good and I should have cancelled years ago! Use another company if you’re smart.

Tried to cancel my service contract but wasn’t wise enough for their crafty unethical telemarketing service people and “supervisors” that answer the phone. Wasn’t aware that while requesting termination they were misdirecting me into thinking I was canceling simultaneously, but in fact they used some little email scam to continue my service in a home I no longer owned. Totally unethical and unprofessional. This is what security companies have vine to? These are the people you want to trust with your family and home security? Run far away from Moni. Buy a dog.

My experience with Moni Company, services, and products has been a nightmare from just about day one. The product did not work properly for several months once we received it. The company did not help with the system in the beginning and kept telling me it needed batteries. This was not the case. They needed to come out and fix the sensors and equipment. Finally after many phone calls and months they came out and of course it was NOT the batteries. Then the system had several false alarms and they would send out security to check the property AFTER I instructed them not to because it is false. Then they wanted to charge me for the security. I was under contract and could not get out of these services. My equipment never worked properly. NOW I have moved out of state and have requested for 2 months to close my account. That has not happened yet!! They are still charging me. I would NEVER sign up with this company again!!!

Their employees are great the problem I have is that they are too high. $387.50 for a year is high. They claim they are competitive with other companies. You must have a three year contract with them. As I said before their customer service is outstanding but when my contract is up I must go.

We got it as a recommendation from my son in law. My first contact with Moni was with the sales person. They were extremely patient and helpful and made recommendations. They gave me a good price and, as a senior citizen, that was important to me. Customer service has been extremely helpful when I called them. I accidentally set off the alarm myself when I opened the door, and they were perfect. They were very cordial and helped me through it. The system itself is very easy to use and very intuitive.

It was included with the house that we bought, so we decided to give it a try. At the beginning it wasn’t that great, but they’ve been getting better. I don’t think the system is the latest and greatest but it works, I just wish there was something more modern. I do like their response times from the fireman and such. We had an incident with smoke detected in the house and the firemen came quickly.

It was confusing, I almost got it by accident. They came by the house and I thought I was doing just an upgrade but they turned out to be a completely different company. I mean, it’s as good as the other equipment I had, I think it’s extraordinary. Customer service has been very pleasant when they come, they’ve changed the batteries and other things and they charge me nothing. They’re just doing their job.

I have had no problem with the service. Problem came when I tried to cancel. Called in Sept. and told them we no longer wanted the service. told me they needed a 30 day cancellation notice. Told them to consider this phone call as notice, they said fine but I would have to pay October bill which I did. they said they would e-mail me a link to formally cancel it online. NEVER SENT AN E-MAIL! Here it is November and they charged my account again. They are going to met me half way and return this month’s payment and send me the link again(We’ll see). If I don’t reply to email they will charge me again next month.
In conclusion, I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND THEM AGAIN!!!!

My service was not working since August while I try to get it fix, I finally give up and requested to cancel my service on 08/24/17. They said I would receive an email to begin my petition of cancellation that I didn’t receive until I contacted MONI again on 9/11/17. With the 30 days cancellation policy and ALL the time it takes just to stretched the cancellation process even though NO SERVICE WAS RECEVING I am still getting bills for Aug, Sep. & Oct.
Paid Aug. & Oct but still getting penalized for Oct and $5 LATE FEE. I never have a such a headache just for a cancellation request.

faulty equipment, receiving several false alarms. Equipment does not work as advertised. Be aware when upgrading equipment with this company especially if you have an existing contract with them because they will add the terms of the new contract to the old and then you end up being stuck with them for an eternity. They say that you can cancel at anytime and pay 80% of what’s left but that is totally false, you are responsible for the entire amount left on the contract. I regret ever signing with this company.

I love my Moni system. I’ve used the medical alert several times for my husband. When the operators comes over the 2 way they’ve very nice and professional. It’s so nice to just be able to give them the information of what’s going on and not have to provide address information. They stay on the line until the EMTs arrive. There was one time when I wasn’t home and my husband fell. He pressed the medical alert button, spoke with the operator and they were able to send the EMTs to help him. He wasn’t injured, thank God! Without this system my husband would have been on the floor at least a couple of hours until his Home Health Attendant arrived. They also follow up to see if we’re okay after using the system. I’m really glad I have the system and will stay with Moni.

After 4 years with this company, I purchased a replacement battery for my system from Moni Smart Security. After less than 3 months, the battery was almost dead, so I was either sold a faulty battery or there was a faulty power connection to the alarm system. Either way, Moni wanted to charge me to send a technician to my home to diagnose the problem. Who in the world charges their customers to fix faulty equipment sold to those same customers? To top it off, the customer service rep was extremely rude. I cancelled service the following Monday. Horrible company.

I have been using this company for about five or six years. I did not originally sign with them. The original company sold my contract to Monotronics. Monotronics has always been courteous and helpful. Recently, my alarm sensors started to fail. Moni replaced and upgraded in exchange for extending the contract. An employee came out and installed the new equipment in a timely manner. My house is very old and he took great care in installing a camera as well as replacing the old equipment. I am very happy with their services.

I had multiple alarms at my house and never received a phone call. I asked the company why I never received a call and they said there was no answer at the main number (we no longer had a home phone plugged in, but the cell phones were still working) When I had a broken sensor, they called all the numbers on my account to try and sell me new equipment. I had been a customer for 9 years. I got a better deal and better service from a much better rated company. When i canceled the service due to their inability to do the job they are getting paid for, they still made me pay for another month. I asked what about the service they owed me for when they didn’t contact me due to alarms. They told me they didn’t show this in the system anymore. There is a reason they are one of the worst rated alarm companies. Stay away.

    Do not consider this company.

We had Moni install a new security system and the installer who was not a Moni employee or an electrician was learning on the job.
He butchered our front door putting in a lock and damaged our walls putting in the key pads.

The only thing that worked was the front door lock

The window security was missing magnets
Only the front door and garage door were secure.
All other windows and doors were not secured in $2.5 million dollar home.

Moni is a bad company with a flawed business model that has no control of its independent installers.

The system was a joke and the installer a joker.

We since had ADT come in and the installer was professional in an ADT truck and an ADT employee.

The equipment is nice and the customer service is nice however, I was taken advantage of while setting up this service as I was driving and was told to sign a document quickly so the service could be set up. It says in my contract that I have up to thirty days to cancel. But I am still being expected to pay the fee to cancel. On top of that, no one can tell me how to use my pin pad, and I was charged for a month of service already and I haven’t been in my house for a month. I was told when I transferred this service to my name (it came with the closing of the house) that I would not have to make a payment for a couple of months. I am unhappy with this service and I am severely unhappy about being taken advantage of.

Customer Service is very non-Customer service focused. Spent over an hour trying to resolve a billing error on there part
This is the third month with the same argument! They are billing for a free installation service. The rep today read me their system notes where they said they were removing the fee, however they are still billing and calling for past due amount. Plus they want to add a late fee for the installation. Wish we NEVER had contracted with them. Certainly encourage anyone shopping alarm companies to NOT us them.

Been trying to get service canceled for a week. Spent 45 minutes on the phone with 2 people answering questions. Last one advised they would send email to me and the service would not be stopped until I responded to email. Still have not received email other than one advising me a glass brake sensor indicated a problem. Not sure how that could happen because the system was not turned on.

Please read the reviews! This company is a scam. They lie and promise services that are never rendered. My sensors go off in the middle of the night, scaring me and when I called for an appointment to get them fixed, they came and fixed two of the sensors and now I have 4 that were working fine, going off at all times. I called and they told me I was responsible to change the batteries myself. No one ever told me any of this when I signed up. The alarm goes off and it takes them over a minute to call me and make sure everything is ok. I called to talk with a supervisor and after over forty minutes waiting, I had to hang up and no one ever called me back. I am now changing to ADT.

PLEASE…. stay away from this company. All you will get are headaches.

I would like to thank Monitronics for allowing my personal information (social security number, home address, date of birth) to leave their building when my installer left. When my contract expired he texted photos of my information and called me several times to sign up with him (he now works at a rival security company). So thank you Monitronics for violating my trust, because how can I trust you to protect my home and family when you can’t protect my information?

If there is anyone out there considering this company, I have one word for you: DON’T!
