Pros

Free, Professional Installation

This alarm system will appeal to those wishing to avoid the DIY approach. All NorthStar security systems are professionally installed for free when you sign up. Additionally, if you move within one year of purchasing, NorthStar will re-install your system for free at your new home. The caveat is that you are required to sign a new, minimum 60-month contract at the new rate.

Lifetime Service Protection

Make sure to read the fine print of the lifetime service protection before choosing NorthStar based on their warranty. NorthStar claims to have the best warranty and guarantee in the home monitoring business. The company has a lifetime warranty on their home security hardware, false alarm protection guarantee, and free lifetime battery replacement. In the first year, new customers are not charged for service calls, and they won’t be charged if they move.

The lifetime service protection from NorthStar does not cover your equipment if it is damaged due to weather conditions, natural disasters, remodeling/renovation, power surges, or your own accidents.

The one-year free of service calls is not actually free. NorthStar states that they charge a minimum of $35 as a “Trip Charge” for each home visit. There are additional charges for “Emergencies” outside of business hours.

Positive NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Even though NorthStar Alarm is rated 4.8 out of 10 by consumers on Best Home Security Companys, the company has had several positive reviews from new customers in 2019. These positive reviews highlight the following:

  • Technicians. New customers of NorthStar Alarm are very pleased with the technicians and customer service they receive right out of the gate. Service is described as friendly, knowledgeable, quick, and quick.
  • Explanation of system. These customers also feel like they know how to use their alarm and integrate their system with the app and panel.

Cons

Unknown Packages and Alarm Pricing

NorthStar does not seem to have organized home security packages available for purchasing or monitoring. Instead, potential customers will need to go through NorthStar’s equipment and pick which home security and home automation features they want. Pricing is not available on-line for equipment or monitoring.

NorthStar does offer 24/7 monitoring, but again, the price is undisclosed. It’s also undisclosed whether or not equipment comes with the monitoring, or needs to be purchased separately. The main monitoring plan seems to have a back-up generator in place.

Long Contract

NorthStar requires a minimum 60-month (5 year) contract. If you move in the middle of that 5-year contract, your contract will start over with the company at their current monitoring rates. On top of that, your contract will automatically renew unless you cancel in writing, 60-days prior to the end of your contract.

Negative NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Before 2019, most of the reviews on Best Home Security Companys were negative. Since then, we have seen a mix of happy and unhappy customers. Below are the biggest complaints from reviewers for NorthStar Alarm in the last year:

  • Contract. A lot of customers are angry that their contract extended after purchasing new equipment or that it automatically renewed. The company’s minimum 5-year contract was a lot for most people. To cancel a contract, customers report it costs $1,800-$3,000
  • Customer service. A common complaint about NorthStar is that it’s difficult or impossible to get ahold of the company outside of their service hours. Others have commented that the company does not return calls. When people could get ahold of customer service, they did not have positive things to say about the interactions. There are also several mentions of technician service and the fees accompanied by service.
  • False alarms. Even though the company has alarm protection guarantee, many customers have left reviews about false alarms. Local police can charge individuals for each false alarm after a warning.

Not Available Nationwide

NorthStar is licensed in the following 30 states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MO, MN, NC, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI. View Nationwide Companies.

Recommendation

We do not recommend using NorthStar Alarm services at this time. The company has a length 5-year contract, whereas most home security companies have 3-year contracts or even no contracts. Additionally, your contract may auto-renew with NorthStar Alarm when you move, purchase new equipment, or forget to cancel. Their “lifetime service protection” has many caveats and should be read carefully. Lastly, we do not like that the equipment and monitoring costs, as well as the actual home security packages, are not displayed on their site.

The sales rep that came to the house was very misleading. he indicated that we could sign a 3yr or a 5 yr contract. the 5 year would be at a slightly lower cost per month.

3 years into the contract and after selling my house, i called Northstar to cancel service. they told me my contract was 5 years and i would have to pay the remaining balance if the new owners wouldnt assume the remaining contract.

i told them about the agreement with the salesperson and they told me to read my contract closer. after seeing the very small print the contract only offers 5 years. the salesperson had completely lied to me and there was no recourse.

the contract terms and length should be up front and visible, but this is part of the scam.

i also had problems with the sensors falling off of the doors. i called to have them come and repair the shotty work and they told me a service call would run $80.

this is not a reputable company. they prey on and count on customers trusting their unethical sales staff and dont leave you an out when you sell your property.

    Avoid Northstar.

Poor all the way around. Signed a contract with them for 5 years. During the time I had issues with my sensors. The technicians they sent out made it seem like the issues were all my fault. After the last year of the equipment not working, I bit my lip until we were finished with the contract. So shortly after the time was up, I went with a different company. To my dissatisfaction I found out that Northstar had my sensors installed incorrectly. Also, I found out that after 5 years, your locked into a 18 month contract. So, I’ve had to pay $655 for nothing. Do not go with this company!!!

We got our system a year ago and have enjoyed it ever since. Our installation went well, our sales representative was extremely helpful (and not pushy at all – which we loved), and the equipment was all manufactured by Honeywell whom we trust. We have had one hiccup so far with a door sensor, but we called into tech support and got it fixed over the phone that day. I would definitely recommend NorthStar.

This is a terrible company because they had a representative that came into our home and falsely lead us to believe that our previous security system business had been bought out by them. That is the ONLY reason we let them upgrade our system and signed papers because we believed them and took the rep by his word. Come to find out that he lied to us and that we still had services with our other security system company and now with North Star. We tried to cancel with North Star but unfortunately is didn’t matter that they got our business by lying. We tried to explain to them that we agreed only because we thought the other business had been bought out but they absolutely refused to acknowledge that fact. They told us that they would take care of the rep but sorry you still have to pay us for the next 5 years. Unbelievable and very, very ugly way to get their business.

I have had Northstar for a couple years and I love the system! I can control everything in my house. Alarm, thermostats, door locks, garage door, and lights from my phone!

I understand I signed a contract and they paid for my equipment! The customer service reps have been helpful the one time I needed them and I would recommend them to anyone looking for the best Honeywell system!

I was pressured into signing on the dotted line, but did get them to go down to 4 year but the next day I decided this was not for me and the third day was on a Saturday so before I could call the Rep was in the neighborhood and I told him I wanted to cancel so ne said he would be by on monday and then never showed so I called the company and they said it is past the 3 days and wanted proof I verbally talked to the Rep. This company is one of the worst scam companies I have ever worked with. I have talked to a couple of my neighbors that were talked into it also and everyone is paying different prices for the same crap equipment. Now I am stuck with an alarm system I don’t even turn on

They were quick to install this system but sllllloooowww to removed it.
The salesman came to my door saying he had a great deal for me since I lived on the corner and would be good advertising for their company. I should have seen what a line that was. After a high pressure pitch I signed on the dotted line. The technician came right away and installed the whole system. She took 4x longer than promised, and didn’t leave until 10:30 pm! She did a sloppy job. The smart garage door openers didn’t work well at all, and it was a complete eyesore.
After a day of using the system I decided it wasn’t for me. I went through the process to cancel in the 3 days I am allowed. Boy was the salesman mad! He kept pressuring me and pressuring me to keep it. I wouldn’t budge, and made sure I got in writing that my contract was canceled. Now they are taking forever to remove my system. The contract allows them 20 days to remove it, and I am sure they will wait until day 19.
READ YOUR CONTRACT CAREFULLY. These people are tricky.

Northstar rep installed system in my elderly mother-law’s home. The installation was of amazingly poor quality. The small print required payments for many years and the fee to cancel was the sum of all the payments.

When she moved to a private facility for the elderly the system was not functioning but the monthly drafts continued to be paid month after month.

No service, poor quality installation and no reasonable way to terminate the contract led me to the “0” rating. Negative numbers were not a choice. BUYER BE WARE!

I had northstar install a security system in my home 4 years ago and I couldn’t express with how happy I am with them. Everytime I call or need anything they are on top of it and are very polite. But they always have met my needs. And I’ve had my alarm go off once while I was away and the cops showed up in minutes and actually caught the burglar down the road. I’ve read some of these reviews and it’s plain to see that some people are upset cause they are playing the victim. Any company you go with will have a contract. People should know this and not act surprised. And it sounds like maybe they had an individual (the representative) who maybe wasn’t upfront about things. But that does not mean the company in whole is a bad company. There’s a bad apple on every tree. And there a door to door company and from my experience it’s impossible to keep a perfect record when you have thousands of individuals knocking on doors every day.

I am just FURIOUS after dealing with a Northstar Alarm salesman who targeted my 84 year old mother and almost got away with it. Mom says she was under the impression that the nice young man, Chris Rodgers was from her current alarm company and just wanted to upgrade her system for a slight price increase. Fortunately, I dropped in and figured out the con so I told Chris to leave and we would contact him after helping Mom decide what she wanted to do. That sleazeball did not leave the house but made my mom call my brother so he could give him the sales pitch. After my brother ordered him out of Mom’s house he left without mentioning that he was taking a cancelled check and a SIGNED 60 MONTH CONTRACT!! We turned the tech away and my brother made Chris come back to the house and take the rescinded contract with him. Chris directed his high pressure sales pitch at an 84 year old woman who obviously didn’t understand what he was talking about. I find that tactic despicable and disgusting.

I have had Northstar for over six years and never had any issues with service. I just recently upgraded my equipment at no cost. Service has always been great and the techs were always on point.
Also I did move from a one home and did take my alarm system with me and it wasn’t much of a hassle at all.
I would recomend Norhstar to anyone looking due to the service, price, and equipment.

This company has 0 customer service – tech support, when you can reach them, is sometimes helpful but mostly not. I’ve never heard of a security company that requires a 5 year contract for service – ADT, who I’ve heard mixed reviews on only makes you sign for two years. In my opinion, we were stuck with NorthStar for the first term – you can sure believe they are getting registered mail or FedEx or whatever it requires to get them to cancel me after the 5 years is up. Have had multiple issues with the product – no idea how old it is, since the people that owned the house before us installed this lovely (old) equipment. We can upgrade, but would have to pay for it?!? What – we are effectively renting this system – according to what I was told before we signed the 5 year contract. If we didn’t sign, they would come and remove the equipment – to me, that is a rental and as such, should provide good, up-to-date equipment at little or no charge to the consumer, especially if you want to keep their business. In today’s world when a company’s rating means so much to the business and the consumer, you would think that NorthStar would pay attention to these complaints and at least make an attempt to placate those irate customers, but it probably just keeps suckering in new clients for a five year term, so just don’t care!

Avoid! Beware! Watch out! Those are some of the other things I see now on internet searches for this company. I wish I had looked at those reviews. Not so much because of the day to day monitoring service I received from NorthStar, but because their lack of communication with me during the initial term and their hard cancellation policy leads me to believe they value more about what is good for them than for the customer. Do yourself a favor. Do a quick google search for these three words, “northstar alarm beware” and read for hours on end if you choose…..Wow, The “ripoff report” has 725 reports.

The BBB is updating their review of them, but you can use the internet archive page from February 29, 2012 to see an older page showing a C+ review. They had 164 complaints. Try this link.
    https://web.archive.org/web/20120229120817/http://www.bbb.org/utah/business-reviews/burglar-alarm-systems-dealers-monitoring-and-service/northstar-alarm-services-in-orem-ut-5000870

You may very well give a poor review also if have the same experience I did. You sign up, meet your initial 60-month term obligations, and then try to cancel. You’re then told, no, you can’t cancel because your contract was automatically renewed for another year and a half. That’s what most of my review is about. A smaller issue is that my yard sign was broken in half after about 3 years, I asked for another one a few times and was told they were on back-order. I never received communication or another yard sign. The bigger problem is, like many others, their unreasonable cancellation policy and poor communication during the initial contract term. Here are my details.

The contract requires a 60 month commitment, the “initial term”. That is not the problem. IF you do not give written cancellation notice at least 60 days prior to the end of the initial term, they automatically renew your contract for another 18 months (the renewal term), that begins after your initial term. To me, this is like asking the customer to predict the future. Not only asking something unreasonable, but if you fail to predict the future correctly, then you must pay for a service you don’t need, don’t want, and can’t even get.

So in my case, and possibly yours, you need to know that it is your sole responsibility to remember 5 years after signing a contract to communicate in writing before month 59 of the contract, if you intend to want to go with a different company at any time in the next 19 months. Huh???? Because if you fail to deliver that notice in time, you’re out of luck. You’re locked in. You must foresee that you will want to cancel at some point during the 18 months following the initial 60 month agreement (kind of hard to do). If you miss that window of opportunity, you are stuck, and they are unwilling to negotiate. I spoke with customer service on a couple of occasions. Although mostly polite, they are unwilling to budge. Allie with customer service told me that she has never heard of them negotiating the remaining amount due of a renewal term. She asked again for me, but still got the same answer. I have had several telephone conversations and a letter I wrote asking for a reasonable negotiation, given that I am not using their equipment, their equipment is disconnected, I don’t need their monitoring service, please let me pay some reasonable negotiated amount. I didn’t receive a response to my letter, but on the phone I was told “no” and effectively, “But we can send you an invoice for the total amount you owe”. Gee thanks…..

What’s more is if you fail to cancel the renewal term at least 60 days prior to that 18 month renewal term, you get another 18-month automatic renewal. Congratulations! How convenient for the customer. I wonder how many accolades they have received for their automatic renewal services.

So why did I switch companies? Since NorthStar did not offer any new equipment packages at the end of my 60 months, and I still had that broken old yard sign, I shopped around, and found a great deal with another company, had their system installed, and NorthStar’s system disconnected. When I called to cancel, that is when I was told that I had to keep paying for over another year. Do what??? That doesn’t seem right, and it’s not what other companies do when service is cancelled. The individual that referred me to CPI shared that he called his former company, ADT, to cancel and they required him to pay 2 months, agreeing with their 60-day cancellation notice.

I agree that I signed this and it’s their right to enforce it strictly, but I can’t believe this is the way it has to be. Turns out, I am right about that. Even though some other companies have similar terms in their contracts, those other companies contact the customer to review the options as they near the end of their contract. Wow, that seems like something that is good for both customer and company. Why wouldn’t NorthStar do that? Listen and learn NorthStar, if a company offers new equipment and options, and they provide good service, why not stick with them? But NorthStar didn’t do that. I signed it, I will pay what I owe. They might gain $500 extra or so from me, for services I don’t want from them or use, but I can work pretty hard to share my experiences and recommendations.

My final question for all alarm companies is, why not allow a good customer, after their initial 60-month (or whatever) term is complete, to give 30 or 60-days notice to cancel? That is simple. Everyone understands that. Wouldn’t that be GOOD customer service? One of their values from the NorthStar website says, “We unselfishly serve our customers”. I think if you claim good customer service, you try to do good things for your customers. If NorthStar can cancel, with 60-days notice, before the initial term is over, why can’t they give the customer that benefit later? In my opinion, one reason – NorthStar believes it is good for NorthStar if they can lock you in to another 18-month renewal term. And guess what, you agree to it in their contract. Folks, I just don’t think it’s right to bind good customers to terms like that. They must believe it is good for them, because it is certainly not good for the customer. I don’t need companies like that in my already hectic life, and I am guessing you don’t either. So I hope you do your research and make a good choice.

Well I guess that’s better than going without eating and losing my house oh by the way after he said that he told me to have a nice day. This is a sham company if I ever had one. Months ago I called for service after my motion detector failed and the police responded twice to my home. I called and was told it was a bad battery and I could change it. Well I couldn’t figure out how to open the unti and didn’t want to break it so I called and requested a service person come out and fix it. Nothing. Nobody ever came out or bothered to call me. So now we had to have the alarm in stay mode so as not to get anymore false alarms.
On 11/17/13 we had a huge windstorm blow through and lost power for 18 hours. When power came back on the keypad is trying to run a reboot but just does it over and over. so no alarm at all now. So I call for service and the person I spoke to says it was probably a power surge the fried the keypad and they would have a service tech call me in 24-48 hours to schedule a time to come and fix it. Well it has been nearly 60 hours and nobody has called. This company sucks and I would not recommend them to anyone needing an alarm system. I am sure if I try to cancel they will say I signed a 5 year contract, well they signed a contract with me to service the damn system and they are in breech of contract and I will haul them into court.

I had the same experience as Truc Vo. STAY AWAY!

Their prices are high and their cancellation terms is outrageous! NOTE : They will not tell you this when they come to install the service!

I have been customer for 5 years…and can anyone exactly remember when 5 years complete..well..since then I am still trying to cancel .

If there was a rating below 0, I would have chosen that!
