Multiple Package Options

Protection 1 offers a variety of packages to their customers: from basic home security which requires a landline phone to state-of-the-art home automation that utilizes a cellular signal that can be controlled from a mobile device. State-of-the-art Technology

Protection 1 has been around for 27 years, but they have continued to evolve with modern technology. Their Smart control and video packages are all wireless making for easy, non-intrusive installation. They utilize a cell signal so customers don’t need to worry about an internet connection or having a landline phone. Protection 1 customers can access and view their home’s activities via a smartphone. This enables customers to view live video feed, track the armed status, lock and unlock doors, turn on and off lights, control the temperature of the home, etc.

Customer Service

Protection 1 sets themselves apart with their customer service. There are no automated phone systems, only real customer service representatives and their wait times are incredibly short. They claim to answer the phone within a few rings, which is remarkable compared to the wait times of some other companies. If readily accessible customer service and immediate communication are important to you, Protection 1 is worth contacting.

Secure Move

If a customer decides to move while in the middle of their protection 1 contract, Protection 1 will install a new or existing system to the new home for the customer, and pay $150 of the activation fee. The Secure Move feature really helps to set them apart in the industry, not many other companies in the industry offer a comparable service. Safety Net

If the customer suffers a loss due to their home being burglarized or damaged due to fire, Protection 1 will pay up to $1,000 of the home insurance deductible. This is a unique feature that not many other companies offer, and we have taken this into consideration when calculating our expert score. Several Additional Fees

Protection 1’s main problem is that they require their customers to pay full-term for contracts even after cancellation. Customers do have 14 days after signing the agreement to cancel the contract, but they will still be charged a $79 re-stocking fee. Also, in their terms and agreements subsection Protection 1 states that additional equipment may need to be purchased, meaning that all of the advertised features may not be accessible without purchasing additional equipment. Their terms and agreements also state that the equipment will remain the property of protection 1, so even after the service contract the equipment belongs to the company. Prices may increase after the first 12 months of service as well.

Long Contract Lengths

Protection 1 has done a good job of keeping their monthly fees at reasonable prices. This is due in part to their 36-month minimum contracts. Keep in mind that if at any point a customer desires to leave the contract, the customer will need to pay off the remainder of the contract.

Base Security Model Requires a Landline Phone

Protection 1’s base security model, “Secure” starts at an affordable rate of $34.99/moth with a 36-month contract. However, the technology used requires the customer to have a landline phone in order to monitor the system. This technology is dated; not many have landline phones anymore and very few will have the desire to use the base system as a result. It also poses a security hazard
as the phone lines can be cut before the alarm is ever tripped.

The Bottom Line

Protection 1 offers packages to meet just about everyone’s needs; from basic home security to complete home automation with state of the art technology. Their prices range from $34.99-$54.99 with a 36-month minimum contract. Protection 1 has customer service representatives that are readily available, with no automated phone systems and very short wait times. If this is important to you, Protection 1 is worth considering. Protection 1 may require some additional fees; additional equipment may need to be purchased in order to perform all advertised features, and prices may increase after the first 12 months of service. Also, if customers desire to cancel their service they must pay off the remainder of the contract balance.

    We have had Protection One for a number of years now, and one of the best parts of their service is being able to reach a human whenever I call their customer service. It’s very refreshing to not have to sit on hold and keep pressing numbers to reach someone. When you do speak with a representative, they are always kind and professional and resolve the issue straight away. We love having Protection One and feel very secure in our home.

    I chose Protection 1 because of the service. When I shopped around for who I could have secure my home a lot of companies have similar features out there such as remote access. With Protection 1 the sales process, customer service and support are second to none in being a friendly, effective and trustworthy provider that cares about me as a customer.

    To be transparent, I am an employee at Protection 1. But what I can tell you is from the inside, the company puts the customer first and you feel it in the delivery of the service. Great products – similar to what you can get on the market from other companies, but service that STANDS OUT. Live person answers whenever we call in – no call tree to navigate. People on the phone that genuiely care about you as a customer and excellent service techs. I have had my service for nearly 4 years and wanted to share my review. There is a reason why Protection 1 has the highest customer retention in the security industry!

    Great company and great product. Most security companies sell similar products/features. The biggest factor in choosing a security company (for me) is the service. Live (U.S based) person answers the phone every time I call and same day service if there is an issue. Can’t get that anywhere else!

    I’ve been considering an upgrade and was looking at options and called my current company, Protection 1, that I have had for 6 years. They have got the police to my house 3 times within minutes and saved me the hassle of changing companies by giving me a camera and they even gave me step by step on how to use my new smart phone- thanks to James in customer service.. So grateful. I never had to wait on hold EVER and any company with a call center- that is amazing.

    We had a very hard time canceling our services even though we had satisfied our contract. We were very displeased with their service due to slow response.

    One thing we found odd was that no mention had been made of the $1,000 deductible until we decided to cancel even though this was our second burglary. I suppose it was our fault for not reviewing the contract more carefully.

    I do not trust them and would not recommend them to anyone.

    Had Protection1 for 14+ years. Chose to cancel service and it took 12 months to finally cancel. They continued billing me for 6 months until I refused to pay further. They were on the verge of sending me to collections…….until I solicited the help of the BBB. Finally, they cancelled my account and moved my balance to $0. Terrible customer service.

    This company shocked me with a do it yourself solution, at first I didnt want to do it but once they told me that I would get all the same perks and benefits as a professional install I gave it a try, Let me tell ya, some of these features I would never expect from an alarm company.

    We have been loyal customers for 19 years. After deciding to upgrade our system with current technology & remote accessing capability, we contacted them & signed an agreement to have them install the upgraded equipment including a Honeywell touch screen, video cameras, & keyless entry.
    On October 8, 2013 they installed the basic system, but did not complete camera or keyless door lock. Their technician took our 3 key fobs for repair.
    They have never returned to finish the installation.
    After more than 20 calls to their center in Wichita, I am just about ready to seek another security system from a different provider.

    System faults and failures let me to cancel and received talk down pressure to stay. Also will not be reimbursed for 2 months of prepayment. Robbed!

    Have had multiple false alarm issues with the Protection1 system. I’ve had to provide my key and pass code to neighbors to come in my house while I’m gone and have them shut the system down. Have had a Protection1 service inspect and give the okay everything is good, but system continues to malfunction. Also had a main battery issue which the system was down for a week waiting for the battery to arrive. Be prepared to install it yourself and dispose of the old hazardous battery.

    I called Protection1 to cancel after over 5 years of service and was talked down to, to try to pressure me to stay with them. I refused to continue with their service and was then told that although I’m canceling my service affective today 10/31/2013 I will not be reimbursed for my prepayment of November and December. Also, cancelling over the phone is not acceptable to them. They require an email cancelation request and if not received within 7 days they will continue to bill you and take you to a collection agency if you don’t pay up. Protection1 is stealing from me for 2 months of service that I will not be receiving.

    This company is not even in the top 5 list and on other list not mentioned or below top 10. Consider other less expensive options with shorter contracts or no contracts and better service! Take a note on the problems and issues folks are experiencing when canceling with Protection1 or false alarm faults. Search on “Protection1 cancellation reviews”. You will also note issues with cancelling by going to the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

    I have used Protection One for two different residences and would never use their services again. It is a nightmare to cancel services after the contract expires. This happened the first time, but they gave me a free unit at my new house, so I went with them again. After 7 years of service and getting a false alarm every month due to faulty equipment and they could not find the issue, I decided to cancel. The last time the tech came out to try and repair the issue, they replaced the battery which should have been no charge with my coverage and they verbally stated that as well.
