SimpliSafe is a DIY home security monitoring service that offers various home security packages. Customers can customize their security packages or can choose from a package already created. The company has low monthly monitoring fees and doesn’t require a contract, but they charge high upfront fees. People can monitor their automations and security system straight from SimpliSafe’s app.

Pros

  • Low Monthly Monitoring Cost
  • No Long-Term Contracts
  • DIY Installation

Low Monthly Monitoring Cost

SimpliSafe has two, 24/7 monitoring plans. “The Standard” is a home security service that is $15/month. It uses a cellular connection through Verizon and T-Mobile. “The Interactive” is a professional monitoring plan is $25/month. This includes smart home integrations and alerts via mobile app, as well us unlimited camera recording. These monthly fees are lower than other home security systems.

SimpliSafe Has No Contracts

SimpliSafe does not require its customers to sign a long-term contract. Instead, their contracts are month-to-month. The company is able to do this because customers buy the home security systems up front, which means the up-front fees will be high. The equipment you purchase has a 3-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee.

DIY Installation

DIY installation can be a pro or a con depending on the individual. SimpliSafe is good for those interested in buying their own home security equipment and setting up the sensors and keypad however they want. Those who want the help of a technician can pay $79 for professional installation.

  • Negative SimpliSafe Reviews
  • High Upfront Fees
  • Simplisafe and Hackers

SimpliSafe Negative Review Summary

In 2019 so far, Best Home Security Company reviewers have given SimpliSafe an average rating of 3.5/10. The biggest complaints of SimpliSafe are:

  • Sensors. Many customers report having to replace faulty sensors – not connecting to the overall home security system properly, or not sticking to the walls/doors. Specific reviews mention the carbon monoxide sensor.
  • Cheap Equipment. In addition to issues with the sensors, many report that they have experienced issues and glitches with the entire system.
  • False Alarms. Because of the sensor and equipment issues, customers are also reporting false alarms with the SimpliSafe system
  • Customer Service. Reviewers mention that customer service is difficult to work with. Some customer reps have not been helpful in dealing with system issues customers have.

SimpliSafe review from Jaime, left on 4/16/19

I purchased SimpliSafe when my fiancé was being deployed overseas. Upon installation, we didn’t activate the service until he left. Once activated, each time I could call the company, no one would answer. Since then, I have had multiple glitches with the system, the most recent scaring me more than ever. I was home and accidentally tripped the home alarm. I wasn’t able to answer their phone call because I was in the shower, so I couldn’t turn the alarm off either. 4 minutes later, it shut itself off. The company never called me back to see if I was okay.

High Upfront Fees

SimpliSafe customers have to pay for their equipment upfront, which means they will pay a minimum of $229 upfront for SimpliSafe’s most basic system, and over $775 for the most comprehensive system, a doorbell camera, and indoor cameras. This can be expensive for homeowners who don’t have the funds to make a large payment upfront before receiving their home security equipment.

Simplisafe and Hackers

In years past, SimpliSafe has had issues with their hardware getting hacked as reported by Forbes back in February 2016.

Our Recommendation

SimpliSafe is appealing to those in search of home security because of the low monthly monitoring fees. People are also drawn to SimpliSafe because of the DIY installation – they can install it on their own time wherever they want. However, customer service may not be able to help if you run into issues. Many negative reviews about SimpliSafe’s equipment (motion sensor) lead us to believe the low monitoring costs are not worth it. Additionally, customers will pay a lot up-front to buy sensors and other equipment that get a lot of negative reviews. If you do purchase SimpliSafe, the good news is that there are no contracts and the company offers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

We recommend comparing SimpliSafe to the top-rated home security companies with professional monitoring and minimal upfront fees.

SimpliSafe Packages and Equipment

Most packages include no contracts, 24/7 professional monitoring, and no phone line is needed. All offered packages come with a. base station, keypad, and sensors.

  • The Foundation: $229.00

This is the smallest equipment package SimpliSafe offers – made for small homes and apartments. It includes a main door sensor, motion sensor, base station, and keypad. As with all plans, buyers can add on SimpliSafe products: a video doorbell (with two-way audio and motion alert) for $169, and SimpliSafe camera for $99. The camera offers motion alerts and you can stream live feed from your app.

  • The Essentials: $259.95

The next package from SimpliSafe is “The Essentials”. Instead of one sensor, this package includes three door sensors. It comes with the base station and keypad.

  • The Hearth: $374.91

Additional equipment includes a key fob, a smoke detector, and a 105dB siren. Only one motion sensor is included.

  • The Knox: $449.87

This kit is ideal for larger homes, as it includes twice as many sensors as the previous packages: six entry sensors and 2 motion sensors.

  • The Haven: $489.86

While this package only includes four entry sensors, it also has a water sensor and a freeze sensor, which will alert you if the temperature in your home drops below 41 degrees. All of these home automation features can be monitored from the company’s app.

  • The Fortress: $509.86

This security system is unique in its offering of two keypads – one for upstairs and for downstairs. This home security set also includes the key fob, panic button, siren, two motion sensors, and six entry sensors.

I experienced a bait & switch situation. I placed an order which was quoted at $266.80 on the website but when the order went thru my credit card was charged $381.15.
I called customer service and spoke to Carlos who said the system didn’t apply a 15% discount. He offered to cancel and reorder with the 15% discount. I told him the quote I had included a better discount so I told him to just cancel the entire order and I would reorder online.
I then went back online and placed another order which was again quoted at $266.80 but was again charged $381.15, but this time I saved a screen print of the website quote. I emailed them three times trying to get some clarity on the charges. They had a supervisor call me and leave a message but he was going to be out of the office for the next 2 days. He also emailed me but failed to address any of my concerns in his response despite mentioning that he had seen my emails.
I wound up cancelling the order.
Unfortunately I was again charged $381.15!

Not as simple as taking it out of box and just plug it in. When you call or email about issues or problems and you get someone they talk down to you, as if you don’t know what to do.still have issues with camera and they blame it on the internet provider. Ran some tests and all is fine.

We traded up from the old system to the new system. We were giving a credit for the old system towards the new system. Price was good on the system and the monitoring service works very well. My wife set off the smoke detector and within seconds we were called by the monitoring service. The system has its own built-in cellular service and also it works on your Wi-Fi and has a battery back up. There are no wires and it is very easy to set up. The sensors are small and everything is set up through the keypad. I think it is a good system.

Purchased SimpliSafe custom package for parents mid-May 2019 and set up late May. It took a couple hours for install, but there were a few issues (customer support was good). Fast forward 2 weeks later, the Panic button went off while parents were taking a nap. End result was the battery is bad and must be replaced. We just received the system mid-May 2019, installed May 28, 2019, and on June 5, 2019, the Panic sensor went off continuously because the battery is bad. As part of purchasing and paying the upfront price ($350+) less than a month ago, I would expect that the batteries intact are of the latest mfg date where we would not have to worry about changing for at least a couple years. Not the case. Of all sensors, the panic button is the one that goes directly to the local.police department and bypasses the monitoring company. Every false alarm is $100 charged by PD. SimpliSafe monitoring company did call to say the alarm was going off and we cut the dispatch prior to PD coming out. Fact is, after testing, rep assumed a bad battery and they are not responsible for those. So, if PD did arrive, parents would’ve been charge $100 and it goes up from there. My point is, for a new system, faulty/old batteries is a big issue. Now we are concerned that all senors may have faulty batteries and they must all be replaced. That’s a lot of work for a recently purchased system. My throw out to SimpliSafe is that every new system that goes out, should have new/current batteries with at least 7-year life spans. As an aside, the sensor tape strips are not strong enough and we had to super glue each device onto a wall, door, or window. My husband and I have a security system by another mfg/service for 10+ years and have retained them as our service because we’ve had only the highest of experiences with their customer service and equipment. We purchased SimpliSafe for my parents because the keypad seemed easier to use for seniors. At this point, disappointed in the equipment (which batteries is part). If parents weren’t home to accept a call from SimpliSafe, the PD would’ve been dispatch to a false alarm and parents charged $100 for first offense and higher as each offense goes by. PD has better things to do than respond to false SimpliSafe Panic buttons. In my research it is the equipment failures that create the highest amount of false alarm and if SimpliSafe continues to use “old” batteries in their equipment/senors, then I consider that a poor product. Note, customer service has been good, it’s the product we’re disappointed with. Also, took over a week for product delivery.

I have the SimpliSafe gen 1 and I can tell you that it is sucks. We have an issue with the system last year and they sent us a new keypad but it doesn’t solve the issue we have. We used the iPhone app to arm the system at night and the keypad will still show the system is off while the system is actually armed and I will need to use the app to disarm the system to make sure it is really dissembled as I have few occasions that I just open the door because I thought the system was disarmed.

Call customer service and asked I will get a discount if I am
Going to upgrade to a latest system….nope, they don’t offer discount for existing customer to upgrade. I am shopping for a new system from other company and will cancel SimpliSafe as soon as I could. I have enough….

We have had SimpliSafe for several years now and we actually upgraded to the new system this year. Simply safe was offering a trade in offer of our old system toward the new system so that’s what we did. Very easy to install this system in about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how many senses you purchased.

We haven’t had any problems with either system. The newer system is more refined and smarter than the older system and all of the fixtures are smaller including the window sensors, motion sensors, glass breakers, better keychain remotes, nicer base station, and better keypads. We have every type of sensor offered, and found them of good quality.

The nice thing about the system is the low monthly monitoring fee of $14.99 and there is no contract and you don’t have to have the monitoring service if you don’t want it. There is an upgraded monitoring service for about $25 a month which gives you more features including features so you can control your system by your smart phone.

The new system will work with Alexa which I believe is only if you have the upgraded monthly service. I think they should make Alexa available with the $14.99 service too. The CO2 sensor is still not available for purchase. There will be a new door locking system coming out that will work with the system along with a doorbell with the camera that is out now. I found the system works really well and is worth the money.

UPDATE: My alarm set of for 4 minutes. It then shut off. I wasn’t able to answer the phone. I received a knock at my door 10 minutes later. I wasn’t able to answer it. The police then left. Nothing about what happened is safe or would have helped me if I was in real danger. I feel less safe with this system than without.

If I could rate this less than a 0, I would. I bought this for protection while my fiancé was deployed oversees, and couldn’t feel less safe. At times, it comes unstuck and tells me windows or doors are open. That’s scary enough.

Purchased the system, including 3 CO sensors. After 4 months and several calls, SimpliSafe recognized there is problem with the CO sensors; thus, the replacement sensors are on backorder. The first 2 months SimpliSafe provided free monitoring of the system, but the last 2 months they began to charge for monitoring. Claiming the system was not performing as presented, I objected to these charges. Even though the charges were nominal, I felt “used” by SimpliSafe and objected to this arbitrary decision. I question any company that does not stand 100% behind their product and service. Beware of my experience.

Simplisafe carbon monoxide detectors have been unavailable/on back order since I ordered my system several months ago. A call to them today also said unavailable and they don’t know when they will be back. Hello, there is more than one carbon monoxide detector out there, if their current company is not providing, then how about other options? Duh? Also, the guy that answers the 800 call with options sounds very unfriendly and not at all welcoming, i didn’t notice that at first but since i have called that number multiple times, the same mean guy still does the options and without feeling or gratitude for choosing Simplisafe or without anything friendly to say. Customer disservice? Probably, not the smartest people that answer the phones there. Very disappointed so far

We’ve had the SimpliSafe system installed for a few years now and it has performed flawlessly. It was easy to set up and it is easy to maintain. Testing the system is quick and easy. We have accidentally set of alarms (our fault) on a few occasions and always receive calls from SimpliSafe within about 30 seconds. This is a great and reliable security system.

I have been a simplisafe customer for a couple of years. Have not had one single issue with it! Works flawlessly evertime. Have set it off myself a lot of times, and call center calls immediately. If I don’t answer it calls my backup. My opinion there is no better system for the money! Monitoring rates are the best you can find.
I also hid my command center where crooks can’t possibly find it in one minute! I saw the video too!!!

We’ve had simplisafe for about 2 years. The other evening my dog started profusely barking so I go to see that the alarm isn’t set. I arm it and it says, “door or window open”. I worry, call them and customer service transfers me to tech support where I wait for about 30 min to speak with someone. Meanwhile I have reset the doors I’ve used, resynched the system twice, walked through the house with a knife in case the system is right, and log into my laptop to check what sensor is open. All before tech support comes on. The sensor ended up being a window sensor that was literally connected magnetically together, so even if someone were to have used that window it wouldn’t have alarmed.. but it still was sending open to the system. So they sent me some new adhesive, cool. Ok so this was my second BAD experience. I had called them one time in the past about a year and half ago because there was a shrill chirp and I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from and what it meant. The simplisafe guy had no clue how to help me but I finally figured it out on my own while being on the phone with him and simply replaced the batteries in the siren. It took WAY TOO LONG for such a stupid thing. He was nice but it was about 2am. SO back to the other evening, all I want is to be able to know on my keypad what sensor is open (like my really old ADT panel showed me). Simplisafe informed me I need to buy a whole new system from them to get the updated version. I’m sorry, what? You don’t support your current customer base and enable the products like the sensors to still work with your newer version? I just bought and installed this system around this time 2 years ago. Why was I not told that the new edition was coming or given any support to want to remain a customer? What type of business model doesn’t offer their clients a future upgrade ability or replacement option without requiring them to ditch their old stuff and buy A WHOLE NEW SYSTEM? Meanwhile the tech guy had told me I should be able to get 40% off as a current customer.. but when I called customer service the next day, the rude lady offered me 15%. So I had to play that game with her. I’m disappointed and disgusted all around with the company’s support. Out of principle I don’t want another simplisafe system .. (just in case rev 3 is coming out and I need to get that one in the next 2 yrs!) so I guess I have to shop some alternatives. Thanks again Simplisafe for always seeming to drop the ball.

I have had SimplySafe at my office protecting 2 buildings since 2016. The only problem I encountered was Keypad started not connecting and a battery changed solved that. I had one smoke detector malfunctioning and with a couple support calls they replaced the component and have had no issues since. I works exceptionally well and I would highly recommend this system. I am adding one to my home this week.

Had issues with their website and ordering additional sensors. Charged credit card but left items in cart and showing pending. Customer service had no clue, they supposedly elevated problem up but, 2 weeks later nothing (despite asking twice for an update). I decided to purchase the sensors off EBay (much cheaper too) and dispute charge in card.

System is easy to install and works well – they just need to fire their support and website staff. Replace them with competent and attentive folks.

Not having the other issues denoted on this site (thankfully).

After 5 false alarms and many other problems, I’ve had it with SimpliSafe; it’s tome to tell the world what a failure SimpliSafe is, cancel my service, and send the system-crap back for a refund.
    1) it’s so simple that it is not secure or safe: after $800 worth of sensors, 5 don’t work: two of which keep giving us false alarms (the police no longer go to the house to check because SimpliSafe has cried wolf too many times).
    2) setup forces users to use preselected names for sensors (e.g., patio door when we don’t have a patio and we already used back Door for the other door on our house) and provides no correlation between serial numbers and setup names … makes it impossible to know which sensor(s) are being triggered.
    3) if you don’t have internet or WiFi, they “say” it will work using a cell signal; but none of their customer service people know that your system is a cell-signal system … they talk down to you like you are required to have internet and WiFi.
    4) if you want two or more people to be able to monitor/arm/disarm the system, you have to share the same email and password (which is inherently insecure … truly secure systems require unique, secret, private identity to be authenticated which means NO SHARED PASSWORDS can be allowed … if a couple gets a divorce, the one kicked out of the house can legitimately wreak havoc in the other).
    5) the base station firmware updates… remember the marketing people at SimpliSafe swore we could use the system without internet or WiFi … actually, when our base station firmware was not compatible with the cell tower server, most of the SimpliSafe tech support was clueless that it was failing to connect because the firmware update was not loaded… after they figured that out, they shipped us a replacement base station assuming it would have updated firmware … … … you guessed it, they don’t update firmware before shipping inventory from their warehouse … after getting the second basestation (now 2 with the wrong firmware), I had to use the data plan on my cell phone to create a WiFi hotspot to download the firmware update … jeez, why pay SimpliSafe when I’m working harder than they are?
    6) now they have put more money in their founder’s pocket by subcontracting our the monitoring-call Service; since the monitoring call service toll free number was not on my contact for SimpliSafe, it looked like a scam/hacker/marketing call so I did not answer it (two weeks later they sent an email out telling people about the new number … however, since the monitoring/call service does not have access to see what sensor(s) in your system is(are) triggered when the system alerts, they are useless to help decide if the police should be called… the SimpliSafe operations staff has been severely reduced, so there is now an hour wait to get someone online to diagnose if it’s an alert from one sensor gone bad (ie, a false alarm) or if many sensors are seeing a burglar go through your house and steal you blind.

SimpliSafe might have been a good idea by a college student wanting security for his dorm room, but he has proven to be shallow and incompetent at maturing the idea into a real security solution.
