SimpliSafe is a DIY home security monitoring service that offers various home security packages. Customers can customize their security packages or can choose from a package already created. The company has low monthly monitoring fees and doesn’t require a contract, but they charge high upfront fees. People can monitor their automations and security system straight from SimpliSafe’s app.

The Good

  • Low Monthly Monitoring Cost
  • No Long-Term Contracts
  • DIY Installation

Low Monthly Monitoring Cost

SimpliSafe has two, 24/7 monitoring plans. “The Standard” is a home security service that is $15/month. It uses a cellular connection through Verizon and T-Mobile. “The Interactive” is a professional monitoring plan is $25/month. This includes smart home integrations and alerts via mobile app, as well us unlimited camera recording. These monthly fees are lower than other home security systems.

No Long-Term Contracts

SimpliSafe does not require its customers to sign a long-term contract. Instead, their contracts are month-to-month. The company is able to do this because customers buy the home security systems up front, which means the up-front fees will be high. The equipment you purchase has a 3-year warranty and a 60-day money-back guarantee.

DIY Installation

DIY installation can be a pro or a con depending on the individual. SimpliSafe is good for those interested in buying their own home security equipment and setting up the sensors and keypad however they want. Those who want the help of a technician can pay $79 for professional installation.

The Bad

  • Negative SimpliSafe Reviews
  • High Upfront Fees
  • Simplisafe and Hackers

Negative Review Summary

In 2019 so far, Best Home Security Company reviewers have given SimpliSafe an average rating of 3.5/10. The biggest complaints of SimpliSafe are:

  • Sensors. Many customers report having to replace faulty sensors – not connecting to the overall home security system properly, or not sticking to the walls/doors. Specific reviews mention the carbon monoxide sensor.
  • Cheap Equipment. In addition to issues with the sensors, many report that they have experienced issues and glitches with the entire system.
  • False Alarms. Because of the sensor and equipment issues, customers are also reporting false alarms with the SimpliSafe system
  • Customer Service. Reviewers mention that customer service is difficult to work with. Some customer reps have not been helpful in dealing with system issues customers have.

SimpliSafe review from Jaime, left on 4/16/19

I purchased SimpliSafe when my fiancé was being deployed overseas. Upon installation, we didn’t activate the service until he left. Once activated, each time I could call the company, no one would answer. Since then, I have had multiple glitches with the system, the most recent scaring me more than ever. I was home and accidentally tripped the home alarm. I wasn’t able to answer their phone call because I was in the shower, so I couldn’t turn the alarm off either. 4 minutes later, it shut itself off. The company never called me back to see if I was okay.

High Upfront Fees

SimpliSafe customers have to pay for their equipment upfront, which means they will pay a minimum of $229 upfront for SimpliSafe’s most basic system, and over $775 for the most comprehensive system, a doorbell camera, and indoor cameras. This can be expensive for homeowners who don’t have the funds to make a large payment upfront before receiving their home security equipment.

Simplisafe and Hackers

In years past, SimpliSafe has had issues with their hardware getting hacked as reported by Forbes back in February 2016.

The Bottom Line

SimpliSafe is appealing to those in search of home security because of the low monthly monitoring fees. People are also drawn to SimpliSafe because of the DIY installation – they can install it on their own time wherever they want. However, customer service may not be able to help if you run into issues. Many negative reviews about SimpliSafe’s equipment (motion sensor) lead us to believe the low monitoring costs are not worth it. Additionally, customers will pay a lot up-front to buy sensors and other equipment that get a lot of negative reviews. If you do purchase SimpliSafe, the good news is that there are no contracts and the company offers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

We recommend comparing SimpliSafe to the top-rated home security companies with professional monitoring and minimal upfront fees.

Packages and Equipment

Most packages include no contracts, 24/7 professional monitoring, and no phone line is needed. All offered packages come with a. base station, keypad, and sensors.

  • The Foundation: $229.00

This is the smallest equipment package SimpliSafe offers – made for small homes and apartments. It includes a main door sensor, motion sensor, base station, and keypad. As with all plans, buyers can add on SimpliSafe products: a video doorbell (with two-way audio and motion alert) for $169, and SimpliSafe camera for $99. The camera offers motion alerts and you can stream live feed from your app.

  • The Essentials: $259.95

The next package from SimpliSafe is “The Essentials”. Instead of one sensor, this package includes three door sensors. It comes with the base station and keypad.

  • The Hearth: $374.91

Additional equipment includes a key fob, a smoke detector, and a 105dB siren. Only one motion sensor is included.

  • The Knox: $449.87

This kit is ideal for larger homes, as it includes twice as many sensors as the previous packages: six entry sensors and 2 motion sensors.

  • The Haven: $489.86

While this package only includes four entry sensors, it also has a water sensor and a freeze sensor, which will alert you if the temperature in your home drops below 41 degrees. All of these home automation features can be monitored from the company’s app.

  • The Fortress: $509.86

This security system is unique in its offering of two keypads – one for upstairs and for downstairs. This home security set also includes the key fob, panic button, siren, two motion sensors, and six entry sensors.

I am a repeat Simplisafe customer. I previously owned a system and loved the product and it’s features. I paid the $14.99 per month and appreciated the ability to go online and check on my equipment as well as monitor my account. When my security system triggered, the system indicated the sensor location that had been breached. I did not imagine this. I moved several months ago and didn’t hesitate to purchase a new system – I gave my old system to my son. I spent $900 on my new home’s system and went with the same $14.99 monthly monitoring system. Setting up my new system has been nothing less than frustrating. Information I entered when setting it up, mysteriously ‘never happened’ and the default setting is showing up. Naturally this is my fault according to the service reps. I’m also told that I am wrong about being able to log in to my account and view the equipment I purchased and set up in my home. I do not have dementia and I’m not mistaken – I was able to do this with my former Simplisafe system but now I’m told that in order to access my account and my equipment information I have to be upgraded to the $24.99 monthly service program. I purchased Simplisafe due to Dave Ramsey’s recommendation. I purchased my 2nd system because of the ease of use and satisfaction I experienced the first go round. I have referred others and have been guilty of singing the praises of Simplisafe but I regret it now and will not be able to do so in the future. This company has changed and not for the better. My PIN evaporated and went to default setting so I couldn’t disarm my system at the keypad when I was home, having to use the key chain remote only. I contacted them via email and was given step-by-step instructions on how to reset my PIN so I could actually use my system properly. HOWEVER, it couldn’t be done because apparently the regular monitoring fee doesn’t entitle me to access or maintain my own system or account online. I would need to upgrade to the more expensive program or call their support number which I did. I hope when I get this thing finally set up – I’m still remodeling and have 2 cameras and various entry sensors yet to install – I will not have to call often to ask for assistance. Make no mistake, I know what I’ve paid for in the past and it was not the $24.99 monthly program and I also know quite well how I set up my former system and how I was able to access it. Contrary to the assertions of the service rep who ‘helped’ me today, this company has changed the way it does business or they were giving me special treatment with my former system. I’m building a vacation home and I will have to think twice before dropping another $900 on an additional security system with Simplisafe.

I’m not very pleased with our system. We have had several false alarms. We live in Louisiana on a salt water estuary just off the Gulf of Mexico, This is a lightening prone area with a lot of summer squalls. Almost every time we have a lightening strike anywhere near the house the alarm goes off.

We installed this system in our Casita. This is an out-building away from the main house. It is an air conditioned one bedroom apartment / office about 200 ft. from the main house. We’ve had the system for overt one year.

We get a call from their monitors / office. It is a pain. We have ADT in the main house and it has not gone off in the same storm, ever. I am going to go back to ADT.

I have had SimpliSafe for about 6 years and love it. I am an able bodied senior who has been able to set up the system and maintain it with little difficulty. The system works well for me. I have set it up in a way that if the alarm triggers I get a phone call to avoid calling the police, if not necessary. I like the password plan, ie if the alarm triggers and staff calls to check on me and I give them a wrong password, staff will automatically call the police. Also, I have a “panic button” by my bed for added security. The cost is great and replacing parts is very easy. The negatives: 1. sometimes I don’t get the message from staff the alarm has triggered because I am on the phone talking to someone when they call. 2. There is an ominous blue light the base eminates that is sometimes annoying at night. Generally, I am very pleased with this great little system that covers every room in my house….

Simply Safe sensor adhesive is a joke. After having a pros soon all install them on newly painted surfaces, they started falling off due to weak adhesive backing. I’ve never had this with any of my other systems that were installed on old paintbin high heat and traffic areas. When you buy these, it’s like buying the wall hangers at the Dollar Tree. They will fall off. I’ve had five of them fall off already.

I paid $90 for 3 motion sensors and they give false alarms. Everytime the police ever came it was the motion sensors false alarm, I have no pets and put them on lowest sensitivity. I contacted Simplisafe not even asking to take them back but just to cut me a deal on 2 door entry to replace the motion detectors like pay the shipping for me and I would even give them back the motion detectors….NO DEAL! I’ve brought 2 system for 2 different houses and have monitoring… no help

When I first received my system, the motion sensor was faulty but was replaced immediately. After about 18 months, we began to have issues with the cell device card in the base station, They determined Verizon had stronger coverage in our area than Tmobile. We were sent a replacement right away. It was no problem at all to replace the circuit board. I accidentally activated the panic button on the fob and the monitoring center called me within 11 seconds to see if all was well, For the cost, I am well pleased with our system.

The good part is that there this is no contract and a low monthly fee. However, you get what you pay for. The equipment is low quality and unreliable. Also, hold times to talk with customer service are usually over 30 minutes.

System wasn’t working due to an improper internal module that was incompatible with our cell service. instead of sending an exchange base station that would work, they send a part and expected usto take apart base station and install whole new circuit board. Very vague instructions, and complicated to boot! Had to beg company to send an exchange basestation that worked for us. If what they send still doesn’t work will have to remove entire system and send back before 30 days is up, or they will give no refund. Be careful buying from this company!

System was easy to install and test-everything went fine. A week after the test period the system said it could not contact the dispatch center. I called customer service and after 24 hours am still waiting for them to respond to my email and voice mail responses left on their system. If the system does not work and the company will not tell you what is wrong or how to fix it, what good is the system? I also have T-Mobile for my cell phone and it works fine in my house ,but the base unit does not.

My SimpliSafe system seems to be fine when it’s working. But I’ve had it for three months, and in that time, I’ve had several different issues…

First, the base station they sent me was configured to the wrong cell tower network for my area. One would think they’d check that before sending the equipment. After several aggravating phone calls with customer service—and finally insisting I talk to a supervisor—the issue was addressed correctly and I was sent a replacement base station and given a couple months of free monitoring for the trouble.

Once everything was online and installed, the first day I set my alarm in Away mode, I got a phone call from the dispatch center saying that my motion sensor had been tripped. I panicked and was speeding home, the police came, my neighbors were gathered outside my home—and it turned out the motion sensor that’s not supposed to go off for anything under 50 pounds was in fact tripped by my 9 pound cat. Returned that the next day.

Next, out of nowhere one night, my system said it could not get a signal out to emergency dispatch. I called customer service, but their hours are only until 7 PM EST. Are you serious?! What is the point of an alarm system if it’s not going to work when you go to bed and then you can’t get a hold of anyone to help fix it? It eventually started working again later that night, but there was never any rhyme or reason for why it went offline or came back on. And when the customer service rep called me 12 hours later, he had no better explanation than I did.

A few weeks later, after a short trip, I checked my activity log and noticed that certain events were not registering in the log—again, what’s the point if it’s not going to work? I called CS again and again talked to a young lady who had no better understanding of the issue than I did. Awesome.

And yesterday I was late to work because I was troubleshooting my system (I don’t even bother calling CS anymore). Again out of nowhere, my keypad started saying it was out range, despite the fact that I’ve never moved it, and my entry sensors apparently stopped working. After checking my activity log, trying test mode, and a few other tricks, I finally just tried changing the batteries in the keypad and the base station. That fixed the issue—and all I could think was WHY SimpliSafe wouldn’t just design the the keypad or activity log to read “Change Batteries.”

Good grief. I’m starting to wonder if I should actually rely on this system in case of an emergency.

I purchased and returned the product. SimpliSafe decided not to process the return until 10 days after they RECEIVED the returned merchandise. The only reason they processed it then was due to a phone call I placed. After spending a total of 40 minutes on the phone with customer service, I was informed they would not attempt to even contact anyone to attempt to expedite the return payment faster than the stated 4-7 business days. The representatives I spoke to were friendly, but whatever system is in place leaves them incapable of providing a modicum of the help that would have been useful in my situation. Sitting on a return for 1-2 days and calling it processing is fine. Ten days is a shameful amount of time. Whatever process exists that permitted the initial problem is in dire need of correction. Whatever the bureaucratic block is that prevents timely fixing the payment after the fact is completely unacceptable. As to the actual product, there was not a specific flaw with it. The system functioned as advertised. Actual usability without paying the monthly fee is extremely limited. If you are not planning to pay the monthly connection fee, you are better served purchasing a security camera system, such as an Arlo, which provides information while you are at home and away.

The unit loses connection with the monitoring service whenever the power goes out. According to customer service, there is no way to reconnect unless you are physically at the base station. This makes monitoring useless if you are gone on a trip. They’ll still charge you for it though.

After having SimpliSafe for almost one year, I found out that my system is rarely communicating with the monitoring company.. I learned that ALL Simplisafe systems are shipped with T-Mobile modules for cellular connectivity. I went on a T-Mobile service map and learned that their reception is almost non-existent in my area. After placing my base station next to my front door it still did not communicate. .
I talked to someone in their technical department and they said I need a Verizon module and shipped one to me. I installed it this morning and did a test and now it works perfectly !
Simplisafe should have it as an option for a person ordering their systems to go on the T-Mobile map and see what the reception is in their zip code area and order a Verizon module if T-Mobile doesn’t provide the needed reception. This would safe a lot of fruatation !

If you sign up with Simplisafe and expect to receive text messages for the $24.99/month monitoring plan…beware….the company is having trouble with T Mobil and my carrier Republic Wireless. There could be others too that are problems. Instead, you are forced to download their app…just what I need…another app on my phone
