The Good

  • Solid Home Automation Features
  • No Upfront Fees
  • Variety of Security Equipment

Solid Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

No Upfront Fees

Unlike many home security companies, Vivint does not charge any upfront fees for its security systems. This makes signing up for Vivint’s services more affordable. This can also provide peace of mind to potential customers that they don’t have to put down a hefty down payment in order to receive Vivint’s security services.

Variety of Security Equipment

Vivint has various home security solutions with a variety of equipment available. Depending on your home security package, offered equipment will vary, but Vivint has multiple security plans to choose from. Some of Vivint’s offered security equipment and smart home products include:

  • Doorbell Camera
  • Outdoor Camera with Night Vision
  • Indoor Camera
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Smart Door Locks
  • Motion Sensors
  • Motion Detectors
  • Panic Pendant
  • Garage Door Opener
  • Vivint Smartphone App
  • Smart Light Switches

The Bad

  • High Monthly Monitoring Fees
  • 60-Month Contract
  • Customer Service Complaints
  • Negative Vivint Reviews
  • Moving Fee May Apply

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up based on a variety of additional package options. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Customer Service Complaints

Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices and slow technician response times. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Moving Fee May Apply

If you want a Vivint specialist to remove your home security system, you have to pay a fee $129. However, if you opt to remove the equipment yourself, the fee may not apply. Vivint suggests looking through the SkyControl instructions to remove correctly. You also have to pay an additional fee of $129 to reinstall the equipment into your new location.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out Vivint reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you.

Protect American has the highest customer rating on our site.

The Bottom Line

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. We recommend more affordable options that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

I am about to loose everything because of a dramatic change in our financial situation. I called and explained my situation and tried to cancel or see what my other options were. THERE ARE NO OPTIONS!! YOU HAVE TO PAY IN FULL OR HAVE SOMEONE TAKE OVER THE ACCOUNT. I would be worse than Vivint if I convinced someone else to use them.

I had a Vivent system installed in 2014. It never worked right. I only agree after having the high pressure sales guy bother me enough that i said yes. I called the office because it didn’t work right and appointments were booked for repair but the repair tech never showed or rebooked. I tried to cancel with no luck. I stopped paying and demanded they fix it. They have now sent collection agency to get the full contract which isn’t even complete yet. When i insist I called for repair there answer is it here say and I need it in writing. Waste of time and money.

I tried to cancel my Vivint while on Military orders and the agent lied and told me I couldn’t. Legally under the service members relief act I should have been able to. Also while on orders I was robbed because the Vivint system didn’t work. I have been calling them trying to cancel since 2016. They are a terrible company and their equipment sucks.

I have called twice, I called today and my contract is up in 6 months, I never use my system, I’m never at home, and I have pleaded with ya’ll seeing is there any way I could get out of my contract early, I’m divorced now so my funds are limited, I always make my payments and the CSR today, all he could say was well you can have someone take over your account or you could do a buyout which is for the same amount left in the 6 months which didn’t make sense. its’s frustrating yes I signed a contract but we all have things that happen in life that bring us down on our luck. And for a company saying they are there to help people, I can see its more about getting peoples money than really helping. so thank you for the time I used your service it was good but will never refer the company due to the lack of customer service.

Vivnt security systems fail to provide consistent security as their cameras go off line continually. They do come out and replace the camera’s within days of the cameras breaking down. I can only hope that thieves don’t know which days the cameras are not working. On a positive note, their customer service has been good to speak with when problems arise (which is weekly), its the products they provide that are inferior. I would highly recommend going with a different provider unless security is not important to you.

On Sept 05 2017 I cancelled my account after 24 months of service I was charged $904.08 for breach of contract. In Jan. 2018 I find I am still being billed the monthly fee because they cannot find my cancellation email.

Please choose another provider. Vivint was a billing nightmare. They over billed us for 18 months. I finally caught it and they agreed they had over billed and it took months to get our funds back. I then canceled the service and it took them 5 more months to stop sending us bills. Their costumer service is a nightmare. I am not one to complain but this was by far the worst experience I have ever had with a company.

Service is fine as long as you want it but when you want to cancel don’t expect it to happen. Two cancellation letters and for phone calls later still no cancellation. I’ve heard everything from I still have time on my contract to they didn’t receive my letter to pay x amount and we’ll cancel. I’ve been promised letters and emails which have never been received so far but they can mail me a bill saying I owe them money.

Terrible customer service! Paid extra for Premium Service added to account so that they would send technicians free of cost and still had to listen to alarm go off for eight days. No help calling them. Wanted out of contract because POOR service. They say they had renewed the contact for five years on the phone…NOT TRUE!!! Please Beware! Better yet AVOID VIVINT!

I was signed up for a home security system but was not informed that I would have to pay over $1000 to cancel when I decided to do a construction project on my home and no longer needed the system. This is a total scam. I will NEVER recommend Vivint to ANYONE.

At first I was frustrated due to schedule mix up but they finally worked it out and I am so pleased with the service and both technicians I had were super friendly and very maneuverable.I especially love the doorbell camera. This is what I really needed due to an almost home invasion I experienced a couple weeks ago.Now I can sleep a little better at night and feel safe in my home ,thanks to VIVINT Home Security and oh yes,the cameras!

Since purchasing the system in June 2017 we have had nothing but problems. If you are thinking of getting this system, BEWARE!!! We purchased most of what they offer as I wanted to ensure complete monitoring and safety of my home and family. This included a front door bell camera, front yard camera, backyard camera, indoor ping camera (view/talk feature), carbon monoxide monitor, smoke alarm monitor, door and window sensors, Wi-Fi thermostat and glass break sensor and installed the phone app to monitor remotely. Immediately we noticed a problem with the front door bell camera. When the system would alert us, via the app, when someone rang the doorbell; however, after clicking the alert on the app, the app wouldn’t open to the screen to see who was at the front door. Ultimately, by the time you made it to the correct app location the person had already left. In addition, if the person stayed long enough where you could talk with him/her the system would not work. The indoor ping camera, which has a two-way communication ability, goes offline repeatedly and does not function as described. The cameras in this system continue to sporadically go off-line. I have been up and down more ladders, crawled out of the house windows and been in my attic to correct this unreliable system enough that I should be considered a Vivint technician. I have called their help desk and spoken with their techs and have come to find that if it’s not written per their instructions for a trouble call they are clueless. Their tech’s have sent in-house repeaters via the mail to correct a problem just to have a field technician come and take it away; saying it’s not needed. I was even told by a field technician that our home would require a second panel which never came. I was told that my WiFi system was inadequate to which I had a ping test ran and the routers replaced which made no change. This system is beyond faulty, so much so, that I wanted it removed from my home as the cost per month is not worth the headache. After two hours of being bounced around on the phone, I was informed by a corporate representative that they would remove it after I paid them $2500 for the equipment (EQUIPMENT THAT IS UNRELIABLE)!!!

Upon initial installation a seasonal tech called an 1.5 hours later after missing the appointment window to say he was still on another call. We rescheduled without calling his company that was our agreement. The tech was still over an hour late in the window of the appt and had issues working by himself. Needless to say the cameras were just positioned haphazardly. Since we have called for them to send someone to fix the problem and on each scheduled appt they have canceled 4 times with excuses about emergencies, deaths and etc. fFinally, enough we escalated to management and someone came on the line with a distorted voice unrecognizable after calling back we were put on hold multiple times while waiting for a supervisor iwho thought we should be grateful they were going to offer someone overtime.

If you are looking for a security system, pick anything else.  They are going to lock you into a 5 yr contract and won’t let you out for any reason.  If there equipment isn’t working and your home is not secure, they won’t let you cancel without paying for the full 5 years.  They will install for new customers within 1 or 2 days but if you have a problem after that then expect to wait 3-5 weeks for a service call.  If they can’t fix it then you (the customer) have to call again to schedule another call.  They can take the full term of the contract to not fix your problem and still expect you to pay.  I was out of town when my system was triggered.  When they called me to tell me that the system had been triggered, I told them that I was not home and yet they still asked if they should dispatch the police.  YES!  I have a security system for a reason!  After an hour with no follow-up from them I had to call them to get a status.  The answer I got was “We don’t know.  The police didn’t call us with an update but that’s normal.  Do you need us to follow-up?”  Again, YES otherwise what is the point of paying you?  After waiting on hold for about 30 min, I’m told there was nothing unusual at my house. So now I’m looking for the security experts to tell me what I should do now.  My system is still alarming and the police have come and gone and I’m on the other side of the country.  I’m told they can’t really tell me what to do and can’t really help me because I’m not home.  I spent 3 hours on the phone arguing with them and constantly escalating the call until I finally get someone smart enough to run a remote diagnostics on the system.  We discover one of the sensors seems to be malfunctioning but it took me 3 hours of complaining to get someone to put in the effort.  During that same trip, my system was triggered 5 more times (it was a 2 1/2 day trip) and by the end half of my equipment was disabled.  I spent more time on the phone with Vivant than working that trip.  After lots of complaining by me, they tell me they are going to escalate my service call and get someone out sooner than the original 3 week date they gave me. They tell me that they will have someone out within a 3 day range.  On the 3rd day of that date range, no one has come or called so I call again.  They apologize (They do that a lot but it doesn’t ring true) and then say sorry we see that we were supposed to get someone out but we can’t so we will call you in a week or so to schedule a visit.  At this point I threaten to cancel and so they finally set a date for a service call.  Of course, on the day of the service call when I have been waiting for 2 hours of their 4 hour window I call to confirm that someone is really scheduled to show up.  I’m told yes and that he should be there in 30 minutes.  He never shows and 30 minutes after the end of their 4 hour service window I call back to see what is going on. At first they seem surprised no one showed up then said “Oh he ran out of time.”  I’m told they will call me in a week to reschedule.  I told them if they didn’t have someone out in the next 2 weeks then just cancel the service and I woukd find a new company.  Suddenly they were able to schedule an appointment.  I’ve been paying $61 per month and my system hasn’t been fully functional for a month but they can only give me a $25 credit.  I told the customer loyalty rep, whose only job is to try to get customers to stay, that no I would schedule the service call but that I wasn’t happy and would be looking for a new system.  She said OK and NEVER mentioned any termination penalties. I only found out about the penalties when I called to officially cancel (after a new system with more sensors and features for a cheaper price) was installed.  They refuse to waive the fee but try to tell me that their system won’t allow it.  EVERY system has an override or some way around this but they just won’t do it.  They are just greedy and want their money.  They don’t care about their customers. They don’t train their staff on their system or they pay so little that most reps don’t care. I found that almost everyone I talked to had no concept of time zones. They are in mountain time and could not figure out the difference between eastern and mountain time. When I tried to help, it only confused them. Do yourself a favor and pick any other system!

Worst company ever, Do Not get with them!!!! Costumer service sucks, when I sign up with them I wanted 48 months instead of 60 months and we put that on the contract but after I sign it, the agent somehow changed it back to 60 months without me knowing didnt realize until I called to cancel, even though in my contract clearly says 48 months the wont let me cancel because on the contract that they have it says 60 months. So Im stuck another year with these company that I hate now!!!!

I went to Best Buy to look for alarm system and the salesman told us about Vivint that we have 14 days to try it to see if you like it free install and to take it out. So we have for the package deal , door bell, , front door lock,(smart lock and some camera. within 3 days the vivint tech came be to install the system. The salesman told us that the tech guy will give us a receipt of what we had order,He did not have it he taught we had it we only had a receipt and no order parts. So he end up calling Best Buy and they had to tell him what we had order so that waste about 15 to 20 minutes doing that. He install the unit took about an hour.. And since we have dogs the sensor always trip off. I have to call them . after 2 days into in I was not happy since i could not use it. By the 7 days we wanted it out now fighting with Best Buy to get our credit back onto our card. Vivint gave us back for that month of service. Not happy with this service and do not buy from Best Buy. They lied to you about getting you money back fro the installation. I would not recommend them.
