Best Home Security Companies in Tucson

History

Tucson has a rich archaeological history dating back to at least 2100 B.C. It was named by the O'odham word meaning "at the base of the black hill" referencing Sentinel Peak. A mission was established there in 1700 by the Spanish, and after the Spanish/Mexican war Tucson became part of Sonora Mexico in 1821. It became part of the United States in 1854 when the U.S. purchased it from Mexico, although Arizona did not become a state until 1912. Tucson gets over 350 days of sunshine each year - more than any other US city. Tucson is consistently considered one of the best golfing destinations in the West and has a large selection of courses from which to choose.

Population

Tucson is located in Southeastern Arizona and is a part of Pima County. The University of Arizona is located in Tucson. According to the 2010 Census, Tucson has a population of 520,116 residents, and the greater Tucson area has an estimated 980,263 residents. The city is the second most populous city in Arizona, and is located just 60 miles north of the Mexican border.

Crime Rates

Tucson has higher than U.S. average crime rates and the highest property crime rates in the Nation, with 6,582 victims of property crime per 100,000 residents. Other stats include 641 victims of violent crime, 42 rapes, 191 robberies, 400 assaults, 943 burglars and 5,222 victims of larceny/theft.

Tucson's crime index has been consistently higher than the National crime index average during the last decade. Despite high crime rates, thefts and burglaries have continued to decrease year after year. Last year Tucson had over 19,000 thefts and 5,000 burglaries.
