Larry Dolin founded American Security Systems in 1980. At that time, he was working as an executive in advertising for General Foods and Procter & Gamble. During a new business presentation to one of the nation’s largest alarm companies, he decided there was a need and opportunity for a new kind of alarm / security company that combined the highest quality products with the best customer service possible.
Security System Overview
Customers who choose to go with American Security Systems, Inc. (ASS) are required to purchase all of the equipment upfront and then sign a 3-5 year monitoring contract. Typically, they install basic Honeywell wireless systems that include one panel, one keypad, a siren, one door sensor, and one motion sensor for around $1000 upfront. Once the system is installed and activated the monitoring fees are $35/month for 36 to 60 months. If new customers want more points of protection on other doors and windows than the initial costs could be as much as $1500 to $2000.
Founded in 1980, American Security Systems has become one of New York’s largest independent security providers in the area. Currently, it is the 65th largest alarm company in the nation, with over 8,000 customers. They have a locally owned and operated UL certified and NYCFD approved central monitoring station. ASS also has many notable commercial and residential clients, such as AOL Time Warner, the office of the New York State Attorney General’s Office, politicians, UN dignitaries, and international film stars.
One of the biggest issues with purchasing a new ASS system is that they require new customers to pay full price for the all the equipment upfront and then lock them into a multi-year contract. Most companies in the industry provide some flexibility on the contract if the customer buys the system outright ASS does not. Also, if you cancel the contract early you must repay the remaining balance in full, which is really unusual for a company to require of customers who have already paid for the entire system.
