Pros

CPI ‘No False Alarm Guarantee’

A common complaint from home security customers is false alarms. To ensure customers don’t worry about that, CPI has a “No False Alarm Guarantee” that promises a credit to the customer’s account if they receive a fine from the local police department for false alarms. So while the company does not guarantee that no false alarms will go off, they do promise you won’t pay for them. In most cases, false alarms are the result of faulty equipment or installation.

Positive CPI Security Reviews

In 2019, most of the reviews for CPI Security have been positive experiences shared by new customers. The most common praise is the company’s customer service. Reviewers describe their experience with the company as friendly, polite, a great experience, helpful, and knowledgeable.

Video Verification

CPI Security’s home security system video verification is actually quite impressive. According to the CPI Security website, “an alarm event triggers your security cameras to start recording and notifies CPI’s award-winning Central Station.” This recorded video verification allows customers to know there is a real threat, like burglars, or if its nothing to worry about.

Security Systems for Businesses

CPI Security is available for businesses in licensed states. The company specifically caters to retail stores, restaurants, medical offices, and industrial warehouses.

Cons

Undisclosed Fees and Transparency Issues

Although CPI Security Systems boasts free installation, this promise comes with several conditions. For example, the cost of a CPI security system can be extremely high if you don’t own your home, as CPI Security attaches a hefty $299 installation fee for renters. All customers, whether they rent or own, may also be required to pay additional installation fees for second-story security cameras. And though the website says customers can receive up to $2,200 in free equipment, customers are required to purchase upfront a minimum of $99 in monitoring equipment.

Unlike other security companies, CPI Security does not clearly state the details of opening an account or service agreement. Actual monthly rates and contract lengths can vary greatly depending on the customer’s credit rating, and the CPI website yields little information for customers to reference. They do say that their monitoring rates start out at $29.99 per month. We can assume that is for their most basic package – “inTouch Essentials”. In order to receive an accurate quote, customers must first receive credit approval.

Negative Reviews of CPI Security

About half of the CPI Security reviews on Best Home Security Companys are complaints. The most common theme amoung these complaints are as follows:

  • People were unable to get out of their long, 5-year contract with the company. Reviewers warn people to read the entire contract before signing.
  • Not able to get a hold of customer service.
  • Out-dated and fault systems

Limited Availability

CPI Security Systems is only available in the southern region of the United States. They are predominantly in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, but do have licenses to operate in Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, Mississippi, and Arkansas as well. Those interested in CPI Security systems need to make sure they check the company’s state availability before contacting the company.

Our Recommendation

Despite the initial offerings CPI promises and reactions from consumers, CPI Security has hidden fees, high upfront costs, and long contracts. We encourage you to look for less expensive, higher rated home security systems. View our top-rated home security systems.

The service is fine but their customer service is horrendous. They have no capacity to perform any account functions on their web site. When you call customer service, they put you on hold without asking. My contract had been expired for over a year and when I ask to cancel due to moving, they require me to send in a letter instead of taking my word on the phone or allowing me to do it on the web site. On top of that, they want a 60 day notification.

Worst Company I have ever worked with. They lied to me when I set this up and not reading the fine print, I signed. I have had this 3 years now and quit using it after the first 6 months. Has not worked properly at since the time of setting it up. I got tired of the police coming to the door every other day, hounding me and my brother that I used for a back up contact. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!

I have had this system for years, it has not worked will since I removed my home phone and have been using the system on cell. I called today to cancel our service, the lady that I spoke too continued to try to sell me services/upgrades even after telling her numerous times their service does not work well where I live. She asked 3 times why I am taking the system out. I finally became very frustrated and asked for a supervisor, she refused then stated that they do not take calls, they would return my call in 24 to 48 hours. They are scheduled to come out tomorrow at 4 to remove “their” equipment.

Terrible customer service during installation. Increases in rates without notification.

WORST PART: Signed 5 year contract and fulfilled 4 years until I was relocated for a job. CPI doesn’t provide service at my new location and they are charging me 75% of remaining contract to discontinue.

Do not use this terrible company.

I had a terrible experience with CPI . It’s all about the money for them even when I’ve explained over and over that the service they provide doesn’t and never did work for me or my elderly mother who lives in the basement.

Bought this 4600 sq ft home one year ago and on move-in day with the moving van parked in front of my new home a salesman appeared at my front door. Said he was in the neighborhood on another business related call which I now highly doubt since no one else here has CPI. I suspect he trolls subdivisions looking for the perfect opportunity to strike as he did with me. I actually told him I wasn’t interested but he convinced me to just let him demonstrate his company’s special features. He said it wouldn’t take long at all….well, three hours later he was still selling, and convincing me that CPI was the best thing since sliced bread.
So I signed up for $50 month for 5 years and weeks later when we realized that my elderly mother would never learn to use this system and didn’t want it, CPI attempted to sell us another piece of equipment which we bought thinking it would make the service useful…but it didn’t work once again.
I called to explain several times that the system doesn’t work for my mother in the basement but no one’s interested now since the contract is signed.
It’s so clear that CPI doesn’t care about anything except getting some sucker to sign up. BEWARE of CPI salesmen…

We’ve had no problems; however, we’ve never had a break-in, thank goodness. The remote monitoring has really worked great for us. Knowing when there is a power failure has been invaluable and also being able to monitor the inside temps. We have two homes and it’s so nice to be able to monitor them when we are away.

Buyer Beware!! The representative came to my home when I signed up. I was told by CPI’s representative,in my home, that if I ever moved to area/state that they did not cover, I would not be liable. Only if I moved to an area that they covered and then did not re-sign up, would I have to pay. This CPI agent has since been fired from CPI. I moved across the county after 2 years of my contract and they just billed me close to $2,000. Terrible way to treat your customers!!

The company worked hand and hand with the builder of my house so I just went with it. Horrible idea of course, make sure you read everything and don’t take the CPI reps word for anything. I was told originally 29.95 when they were building the house but when they came to install it was 49.95 per month. The rep assured me that they would match others in the area if another company offered the same stuff or a better price…again wrong. The customer service is horrid and don’t seem to care. They just say well you can opt out for 75% of the contract fee which is insane.

Have been told by 2 representatives my fee would be waived. Now I’ve received a bill for that fee for the 3rd time – I called they tell me those employees were wrong and I owe the fee and have charged me late fees. They harass my everyday with phones call. I call and talk with them and ask for a supervisor and NEVER get a call back. It’s absolutely ridiculous. They should honor their employees word. And if they’re going to harass me all the time they should call me back when I request to speak with supervisors. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE!

The CPI installer in our neighborhood is the reason no one is going with CPI after we heard him tell us he spent a long time in prison for what he said was a huge amount of marijuana? We are looking into another company who screens their employees more in the homeowners interest. On top of this he blocks us in our driveway with his CPI mini van and we can’t get in or out with our trailers when this immature CPI employee is harassing us and hiding behind his own CPI cameras looking into our homes. From HIS self admitted criminal status it’s great how a company like CPI and a convicted drug dealer like him are able to go into private homes to install “security systems”. Hope he lied about being a drug dealer before a CPI installer.

I have tried for two weeks to get someone to come out to check the lock on my door, I was told that it could probably be fixed from the CPI station, that I would be notified when a technician would be coming out.The very same day, someone called and left a message that they were on their way, ( I was at work, did not get the message until I got off from work) No confirmation from me that that was a suitable time to call. Sometime later, received a call that they were at my door. I was not at home. No other attempt to call to reschedule.
I called this am to reschedule and was told that they could come from designated times of 8-12 or 12-4:00
I asked to be notified on my cell # specifically, they called on house phone.
I am most unhappy with CPI’s customer service.!!!!!!!! To the point, that I am ready to switch to another provider!!
I apologize for the inaccuracy of missing names!
I do not have names to report but you should have who has taken my calls!
The only courteous person who has really helped me over a year ago, was ERICA or ERIKA!

Beware…CPI is not flexible in working with you regarding problem equipment or their contract. I locked in at a $49.95 rate for 5 years and within the first two years most of the “extra” equipment has stopped working. they offered to allow me to pay $1311.19 to get out of my contract! How generous. I guess for that month fee I will see how many times I can talk to their operators when I am lonely.

Very disappointed…..my fault for not looking at the fine print in the contract that stated I was locked in for 60 months. Never would have signed the contract if I had read this small but impactful detail. ABSOLUTULY ridiculous that any company now a days would lock you in for 5 years. We all know that family situations change and are not predictable…. because I have 39 months left in my contract I am being quoted a $1400 cancellation fee to get out of my contract. Live and learn!

Found CPI not aware house was not being monitored BY THEM.

Have had CPI for past 10+ years. Had been living under the impression house was being monitored 24/7 as they advertise and had been reassured. Recently changed my phone line to VOIP and disconnected from AT&T (land line). After a week or so of being switched tested system by triggering alarm. No action by CPI.

Called to inquire why I had not been contacted by CPI with regards to my alarm. Was told they did not know alarm was tripped! Was transferred to speak to a person in their technical department. Gentleman could not understand why their system did not pick up on when phone line communication was cut. Offered to have supervisor call me the next day. Next day came and went.

Called the following day to cancel service. Was again apologized to and did not understand why “someone” did not call me as noted. Again reassured this would/ could never happen again if I updated to their cell service. I asked the person with all the reassurance I had been given in regards to my home security being so closely monitored in terms of phone rely how almost two weeks can go by and nobody notice until tested the system. No answer. Again reassured security of my home is their top priority.

End of story, have canceled CPI service of my home as “going forward” my monthly service would increase AND I would have to sign a 39 month contract. Pathetic company with pathetic customer service. Have zero trust in this company. Seemed to be more in need to keeping the money stream flowing to them with no accountability in NOT PROVIDING MONITORING AND BEING PAID FOR IT.

Suggestion if considering CPI.., TEST THEM FREQUENTLY or look into other company as am I. I can only be thankful I was not under contract with them when this all happened as I can only imagine their BS process and threats of penalties I would have had to endure.

CPI put their Keypad in a different room instead of by the door like I asked them to. Also the camera lines up to if a intruder does come in the house he will need to go over and have a seat on my couch before he would be seen. They were suppose to come back and fix the outlet for the auto lamp- When I called back some time later it was going to cost me over $50hr. Wished I had went with a different company .

Decent from home protection and customer service standpoint, but substandard when it comes to technical know-how, contract, and portability.

Pros: Never had a false alarm, interface is decent, and response was quick when we set the alarm off once by accident. Customer service is pleasant, although not entirely fully accommodating.

Cons: Number of noticeable shortfalls compared to other systems I’ve used. 1) Contract of 5 years is too long. They actually used deceptive marketing, telling us it was a 2 year contract but in small print indicated it is a 5 year contract. Cancelling is impractical, as you basically have to pay remainder of the contract, EVEN if you are selling the house. For this reason alone, they should get the worst review. 2) Installation was a nightmare. The installer took all day, left mid-afternoon for some personal reason and then came back at 7pm to finish the job… left at 10pm. 3) Connection was incorrect, draining our battery after 3 months or so. They had to come back twice to finally fix it. 4) They did something to our HVAC connection, where our heater malfunctions and we have to reset the heater. This never happened before we got the service, but now it’s persistent. Of course, they say it’s the heater, not their connection. 5) They are not national, so you have very limited range of portability.

All in all, I would avoid this company if at all possible. They don’t offer any advantages over other companies, and their servicing and contracts are far below their peers.
