Pros

Frontpoint's Pricing

Frontpoint's equipment and monitoring cost are competitive with other leading security companies. Frontpoint home security offers monitoring services in three packages from which customers may choose: protection monitoring, interactive monitoring, and ultimate monitoring. Frontpoint's monthly cost ranges from $34.99-49.99. Frontpoint security systems are all 100% cellular monitoring services, with the higher-priced option offering additional add-ons like home automation for smart home devices and video surveillance monitoring. The mobile app is included in the Interactive and Ultimate plan only and you need a smartphone mobile device to have access.

Contracts are available for 36 months. There is a 30-day, risk-free trial. If you are unhappy with your alarm systems you may get your money back.

Mobile App and Upgraded Technology

Frontpoint also makes a diligent effort to constantly improve their technology. The Frontpoint app gives you remote access and lets you control your system from anywhere using your mobile phone or tablet. In addition to the mobile app, technology advances extend to Frontpoint's control panels. Current customers have the opportunity to upgrade their existing Simon XT control panel to the Qolsys' IQ Touch-Screen Control Panel. New customers now also have the option to purchase the Touch-Screen control panel as a way to upgrade and receive the latest home security technology. This control panel creates an interface that makes full-system functionality easier to navigate than ever. This control panel is compatible with all existing Frontpoint sensors and is designed to support the newest technological advancements made in sensors and monitoring. The features of this updated control panel include:

  • 7-inch LCD resistive touchscreen (800 x 480 resolution)
  • Capable of supporting up to 39 sensors
  • 91 dBa internal siren
  • 24-hour lithium-ion backup battery
  • Tabletop stand and wall mount kit
  • SD card slot & customizable photo frame screensaver
  • Weather application included
  • Camera smartphone app and front-facing camera

Easy to Install

While the system may be DIY, hundreds of happy customers have testified how easy it is to install. In addition, Frontpoint configures the system to your home before shipping it. Once you've installed the system, a quick call to Frontpoint will activate it and make sure it's performing properly, or you can use their new self-activation process provided in the box. To top it off Frontpoint's Monitoring Center is one of the highest-rated monitoring facilities in the country based on unbiased reviews.

Positive Frontpoint Reviews

The majority of Frontpoint customers are happy with the product and service they receive. The reviews we have highlight the company's great customer service:

  • Prompt responses
  • Knowledgable staff who are able to answer questions
  • Personalized attention

Along with customer service, several reviews mention that the DIY system is easy to install and the price is fair for services provided.

Cons

High Upfront Costs

While equipment fees start at $69, they may reach into the $800 if you chose to upgrade packages. For example, a base package includes 3 door and window sensors.

Frontpoint Complaints

The biggest complaint we've seen from Frontpoint customers is the contract. Some reviews mention that they didn't understand all the terms of the contract before signing and that the contract is difficult to cancel (they have to pay 80% of the remaining contract balance). We recommend reading over the entire contract before singing up with Frontpoint. One other point that multiple customers have brought up is that the system has false alarms.

Our Recommendation

We recommend Frontpoint. The company is one of the best in customer service, and anybody looking to use their home security system and its devices can't go wrong. They provide great customer service, no hidden fees, 30-day risk-free guarantee, and top-of-the-line technology and equipment. You can see Frontpoint reviews from real consumers below. Frontpoint vs Simplisafe

The best way to compare Frontpoint and SimpliSafe is to read the customer reviews of each company (we've summarized them for you on this page and on SimpliSafe's page). Frontpoint's customers rate them higher than SimpliSafe's -  many of those touch on customer service. With Frontpoint, you don't have to purchase your equipment upfront, you pay it off monthly. That's why they have a 3-year contract. With SimpliSafe, you purchase all equipment upfront, so you don't need a contract for alarm monitoring. We've also compared Frontpoint to ADT below (both companies have a 3-year contract, but pricing varies quite a bit).

Home Automation Options

Frontpoint has a multitude of home automation options in its "Professional Package". For $49.99/month customers receive the Frontpoint home automation and video monitoring on top of the basic security package. With this plan, you'll be notified immediately of any alarm activity within the home-whether it's a matter of security or an environmental threat.  You'll also be reminded if you leave without arming your system, using the Frontpoint location-based Geo-Services.

An excellent offer that comes with this program is the light control feature. You can customize an on/off schedule or set lights to trigger automatically in reaction to a sensor alarm. There is also environmental protection to protect you against Carbon Monoxide (CO), extreme temperatures, or flooding. With the Interactive plan, you additionally get sensors and thermostats to guard against these calamities.

This Frontpoint package includes a 30-day money-back guarantee trial period, free text and email notifications, and the option to do self-installation.

However, Frontpoint does not sell the door locks,  or a thermostat, etc. The reason for this is that the Frontpoint home automation system is a self-setup, so it can be difficult for someone to install their own locks and thermostats so they operate correctly.

Another potential issue for many is that Frontpoint's automation system is a self-setup system. While the system is generally simple to set up, there are some who may struggle with connecting it to their smart home devices.

I've had service with several companies in several different locations over the years. I've seen nothing to suggest that Frontpoint is any better or worse at monitoring a site than any other company, but they definitely are the WORST when it comes to disconnecting service! They will charge you and force you to have service for at least a month after you place the request to disconnect service and send them an email to confirm it. It might be in their agreement, but who is going to remember that after having the service in place for several years? As far as I can tell, it is just a way to get more money out of people. Even after you explain to them that you do not reside at the address, but that someone else does, they will continue billing you, and continue calling you every time that an alarm occurs. Today was the FOURTH time that I explained to them that I do no live there, it is a rental property with new tenants, and that I am NOT TO BE CALLED concerning their alarms!!! It is Frontpoint's policy that they must have active numbers on the account to call, so they will not remove any of the prior resident's information until a new resident starts service. *** SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE AND AVOID THIS COMPANY!!! ***

Frontpoint was fine while we were under contract. Once the contract was up is when trouble started. I called in like I was supposed to and spoke with a representative from Frontpoint. He told me everything is taken care of and that was all he needed. I noticed a charge to my account from Frontpoint for March. I went through my bank account and saw the charge in February as well. (I know, I should have saw this a month ago.) I called today, Sat on hold for 35 minutes, just to be told it was my fault even though I was not told about this 30 day written notice when I called in December. They said they will not refund my 2 months they took money from me, only 1 month. I am sorry, they were not monitoring the house. No account to track. Why do they deserve to keep my money. Because of something I was not informed about. Horrible business practice and customer service. Be careful when you leave these guys. It will cost you!!!

The equipment is good, but motion sensors generating false alarms were a continuous problem. The phone app is good and easy to use... where this company falls flat is their intransigent unwillingness to cancel a contract without forcing you to pay the entire term you have left. With Canadian exchange, the bill became ridiculous, yet they would not let us out of the contract. When the term was up, they put the hard sell on us and bad mouthed other security companies. The final insult was forcing us to pay an extra month even after reaching the end of our term. Last time I ever opt for a fixed length contract. Way better options. One other p*ss off was their utter unwillingness to ship via postal mail. We are rural and remote; we were forced to travel 2 hours to the shipping company depot.

We love the app because it's really simple and there's not a lot of choices on it, which is good for me. It doesn't look junky, but I wish that some of them came in different colors so that the sensor on the front door would match the brown door.

I've been a customer of Frontpoint for over a year now. I'm happy with their customer service, not worried about costs, their response times are good, and the equipment is decent. Where I'm disappointed is innovation. I went with Frontpoint because they promised advanced features like mobile phone integration and geo location services. I want a security system that reliably arms itself when I'm away, and disarms itself when I arrive. I want it to know to set "stay" mode alarm when I go to bed, and to then not set off the alarm when I walk out the front door in the morning. I understand these are hard challenges to do consistently, but I was looking for someone that at least tries. Frontpoint does none of this. It's an old-school, single panel, manual code entry arm/disarm system that happens to have a smart phone app. Its "geo services" consist solely of sending you a reminder notice to set the alarm yourself when you leave the neighborhood, and its app is pretty much just a way to manually arm and disarm from your phone. I don't want to manually input codes to security panels 4-5 times a day, and either leave my house entirely unprotected or set off my own alarm if I forget even once. That's the reason I have never had a security system in the past, and their marketing sold me on the promise that Frontpoint had solved all of that. It doesn't. Now I'm $1000+ in equipment sunk and in a 1+ year contract that I can't break.

Worse company ever!!! Worse company ever!!!! Stay away, currently filing complaint through MD State Attorney office on this company. Read their contract before you sign anything, they literally have things in there that are borderline illegal. For a company responsible for protecting your family and home, they take no responsibility should anything happen and they do not stand behind the warranty they sell you. For instance, NONE of my door sensors work, I am literally paying for motion sensors and after spending 4 plus hours over a five days on the phone with their customer service nothing has been done. I even emailed their founder and CEO and only silence. This speaks volumes to the kind of company they are. This is the reason I have taken it to the State Attorney office. Please go somewhere else, they do not deserve your business. If I could I would give them a negative star.

I spent alot of time looking into security systems prior to deciding on Frontpoint. I am almost at the end of my first year with the system. Pros Customer service reps are ALWAYS super polite and helpful. Because they use more common sensors it is easy to add things, like door locks, into their system. Issues Had to return the motion detector because it kept picking up my 20# dog no matter what I did. Got a secondary panel to mount on the wall near the door so I could hide the bulky panel out of site. Secondary panel doesn't chine when sensors are opened! Removing it to return led to having to repaint my living room because the mounting strip wouldn't release. Glass break sensor decided to just fall off of the wall, it uses the same strips the secondary panel does! Smoke detector starts going off that there is a fire. Thankfully I was home and knew it was false since my hardwired detector 12" away wasn't going off. One of my bedroom sensors is always losing contact. Even though there are 3 additional sensors on EITHER side of the one losing contact they claim its having interference. The other 6 around it have NEVER had an issue. So that led to a replacement with a king range sensor. Their app worked great until about 2 weeks ago when it stopped showing the current status of the panel. ie I would arm it and panel would show it is armed but app still displayed disarmed. I was on hold for about 30 minutes and finally did the leave a call back # at about 5pm on a Saturday. I did not get a call back until TUESDAY! Some components that had to be returned were never proberly processed in their system leading to additional charges on my credit card. I had to find the tracking numbers to prove they were returned, even though they sent me the labels! Account charges were double billed one month. I understand things happen but as you can see it's another bumb on a long road. About 6 months that in I wanted to cancel due to all of the issues. After spending an hour on the phone and talking to 2 different managers the best I got was to "only" charge me $750 to cancel!! I understand contracts very well and if the service contracted isn't provided you should have the right to leave with no penalties. Getting an attorney involved would lead to that very quickly I am sure. Unfortunately the attorney would cost about what the cancellation would ,or more. That is probably what they count on. In hindsight, and as soon as my contract is cancelled or expires, I would go with SimpliSafe. My parents have had then for years and are very happy with it. Yes, the equipment doesn't work with all providers and will run you a bit more upfront. Because they make all of their equipment it works better with their systems as a whole. If you are unhappy you can simply cancel with no fees. I guarantee you the equipment purchase with SimpliSafe will cost you less than the contract cancellation when your unhappy with Frontpoint. I am really disappointed. Reading the reviews and everything Frontpoint claimed I had high hopes for this system. As I said earlier they probably have the friendliest customer service reps I have dealt with. Unfortunately that does not make up for poor equipment and the time and frustration involved. If you really must have a system you can move to different provides then go with ADT. You will pay more but at least they will be installing and dealing with the issues when you inevitably have issues.

I suspect FrontPoint is fine as long as everything works. However, that wasn't my experience. First, I couldn't install the door sensors because of the molding around the door - they wouldn't lay flat so I had to buy other sensors and drill holes in all my doors to install them (and these are not easily removed to take them with you if you had to). Second, the cost of the equipment adds p - it ended up being way more than I originally thought. Read the small print carefully - they will sell you a very inexpensive plan then they will up-sell you to more expensive plans to be able to use the mobile app. Without it, you need to RUN to the keypad to disarm the system when you open the door (good luck if you have a child or groceries). Finally, be prepared to pay for a three-year term - no matter what! I relocated for a job and had to pay the last six months even though I threw away the system. I'm going with SimpliSafe in my new home - better product, less expensive and NO multi-year contract.
