Habitec Security was founded in 1972 by James H. Smythe. Habitec Security has grown into a regional company with over 90 employees. Habitec Security is headquartered in Toledo, Ohio and has two full service branches in Columbus, Ohio and Charlevoix, Michigan.
Security System Overview
Habitec Security uses industry-best First Alert equipment and provides installation and 24-hour monitoring with all packages. Although packages can be customized, there are essentially three main deals that all come with equal amounts of equipment but vary on contract length and upfront costs. These options are:
Option 1: Pay for all the equipment upfront for $495 and then pay $30.95/mo for one year (cellular only) for three years
Option 2: Pay $199 upfront and then $44.95/month (cellular and remote access) for three years
Option 3: Pay $99 upfront and $35.95 (landline) for three years
All options include the following equipment:
- 3 door/window sensors
- 1 motion sensor
- 1 siren
- 1 key fob
- 1 panel
- Signs and stickers
Habitec has been in business for over 31 years and has established themselves as one of the leaders in security systems for the state of Ohio. They have a state-wide central monitoring system which allows them to provide fast, reliable response times to their clients. As an example of the trust they have garnished over the years, Habitec is the security system used by the Toledo police department and provides security for over 13,000 residents and commercial businesses throughout Ohio. Since their focus is to cater to local residents, they provide 30 fulltime technicians to their customers which are available 24/hrs a day, 365/days a year. Recently, Habitec was named the #1 security company in Ohio by Security Distributing & Marketing (SDM).
The most glaring problem with Habitec is their warranty policy. Whether you purchase a system with a one or three year contract the warranty is still the same—one year. Since most customers chose to not pay for all the equipment upfront they get stuck using a system for several years that is not ensured. This means that any equipment malfunctions will require extra out-of-pocket costs. Another potential problem for customers living outside of the Ohio/Southeastern Michigan area is that technical support will be slow due to the small size of the company. It would most likely take several weeks to receive in-person support for equipment needs.
Habitec offers a home automation system to compliment their cellular-based home security system. They provide a wide array of home automation equipment that allows the customer the freedom and flexibility to control and access home appliances and functions from anywhere. For example, with the Habitec automation option they provide a Honeywell touch screen keypad that allows for lighting, lock, and thermostat control which all integrates with your security system. This package not only provides security but adds energy savings, comfort and convenience.
One of the best features of the Habitec package is that it comes with professional installation rather than self installation. Although many home owners are fully capable of installing the equipment on their own, it is nice that Habitec provides a full professional installation given the amount of technology that is being integrated into the home. Also, they provide the option for customers to buy the equipment outright at signing which allows them to retain ownership of the new equipment rather than using it on a lease basis.
While Habitec offers some of the very best in home automation equipment, there are features which are not available for purchase that other home security companies offer. For example, most security dealers provide home owners with appliance control devises, flood sensors, and trial periods during which customers can return the equipment for a full refund if they are not fully satisfied. Habitec currently does not provide some of these amenities.
