Pros

Free, Professional Installation

This alarm system will appeal to those wishing to avoid the DIY approach. All NorthStar security systems are professionally installed for free when you sign up. Additionally, if you move within one year of purchasing, NorthStar will re-install your system for free at your new home. The caveat is that you are required to sign a new, minimum 60-month contract at the new rate.

Lifetime Service Protection

Make sure to read the fine print of the lifetime service protection before choosing NorthStar based on their warranty. NorthStar claims to have the best warranty and guarantee in the home monitoring business. The company has a lifetime warranty on their home security hardware, false alarm protection guarantee, and free lifetime battery replacement. In the first year, new customers are not charged for service calls, and they won’t be charged if they move.

The lifetime service protection from NorthStar does not cover your equipment if it is damaged due to weather conditions, natural disasters, remodeling/renovation, power surges, or your own accidents.

The one-year free of service calls is not actually free. NorthStar states that they charge a minimum of $35 as a “Trip Charge” for each home visit. There are additional charges for “Emergencies” outside of business hours.

Positive NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Even though NorthStar Alarm is rated 4.8 out of 10 by consumers on Best Home Security Companys, the company has had several positive reviews from new customers in 2019. These positive reviews highlight the following:

  • Technicians. New customers of NorthStar Alarm are very pleased with the technicians and customer service they receive right out of the gate. Service is described as friendly, knowledgeable, quick, and quick.
  • Explanation of system. These customers also feel like they know how to use their alarm and integrate their system with the app and panel.

Cons

Unknown Packages and Alarm Pricing

NorthStar does not seem to have organized home security packages available for purchasing or monitoring. Instead, potential customers will need to go through NorthStar’s equipment and pick which home security and home automation features they want. Pricing is not available on-line for equipment or monitoring.

NorthStar does offer 24/7 monitoring, but again, the price is undisclosed. It’s also undisclosed whether or not equipment comes with the monitoring, or needs to be purchased separately. The main monitoring plan seems to have a back-up generator in place.

Long Contract

NorthStar requires a minimum 60-month (5 year) contract. If you move in the middle of that 5-year contract, your contract will start over with the company at their current monitoring rates. On top of that, your contract will automatically renew unless you cancel in writing, 60-days prior to the end of your contract.

Negative NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Before 2019, most of the reviews on Best Home Security Companys were negative. Since then, we have seen a mix of happy and unhappy customers. Below are the biggest complaints from reviewers for NorthStar Alarm in the last year:

  • Contract. A lot of customers are angry that their contract extended after purchasing new equipment or that it automatically renewed. The company’s minimum 5-year contract was a lot for most people. To cancel a contract, customers report it costs $1,800-$3,000
  • Customer service. A common complaint about NorthStar is that it’s difficult or impossible to get ahold of the company outside of their service hours. Others have commented that the company does not return calls. When people could get ahold of customer service, they did not have positive things to say about the interactions. There are also several mentions of technician service and the fees accompanied by service.
  • False alarms. Even though the company has alarm protection guarantee, many customers have left reviews about false alarms. Local police can charge individuals for each false alarm after a warning.

Not Available Nationwide

NorthStar is licensed in the following 30 states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MO, MN, NC, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI. View Nationwide Companies.

Recommendation

We do not recommend using NorthStar Alarm services at this time. The company has a length 5-year contract, whereas most home security companies have 3-year contracts or even no contracts. Additionally, your contract may auto-renew with NorthStar Alarm when you move, purchase new equipment, or forget to cancel. Their “lifetime service protection” has many caveats and should be read carefully. Lastly, we do not like that the equipment and monitoring costs, as well as the actual home security packages, are not displayed on their site.

I had my system installed 2 years ago and couldn’t be more pleased. I have cameras, z wave thermostat and a z wave door lock.
I didn’t pay anything for installation or for equipment. My monthly rate is $54.
I was paying $53 for ADT and I didn’t have any of these great features. All I had with ADT was a motion detector. I have dogs so I couldn’t even use the motion detector!
My Northstar rep took down the motion detector and replaced it with a glass break detector. I feel so much safer now.
I read all these “complaints” and it seems like 90% of the people that are complaining are fabricating your experience.
Did you pay for the new equipment?
    Did you pay for installation?
The monthly rate is what you agree to not only on a contract but you do 2 seperate QA calls with the corporate office.
How did you not READ it’s a 60 month contract and how did you not HEAR your monthly rate is $59.99 per month for 60 months, for example.
Take some personal responsibility. You signed the contract. You did a recorded QA call. You knew the contract length and you knew the price.
For the other 10% that had legitimate complaints… I hope it works out for you.

They are the worst Alarm service ever. Not their monitoring but their customer service and service techs. They are practically a scam company. The biggest mistake of my life has been getting conned into agreeing to a five year service contract. DO NOT use Northstar. No alarm monitoring would be better than them.

I have never been so frustrated and dissatisfied with a company in my life. I wanted a security system on a home I own but do not live in. The tenants were going to pay the monthly, and the company was one that had been seen in the neighborhood. In June 2014, salesperson gave the impression that the sign to advertise the service would be the only payment. When asked to clarify, the answer was the same, no monthly payment. The ststem was installed but did not work properly. It took multiple phone calls to get someone to answer, and then to get a technician to actually show up, The reason it did not work was because it was installed upside down. when this problem was corrected, the door frame was compromised. There has not been any luck having someone come to correct this problem. During the phone calls, the question of the monthly payment came up. The company wanted an auto pay. We wanted a monthly bill. They said they would sent the address ( apparently they did not have that information) to set up a monthly payment. Almost 3 months later, a letter arrived from an attorney’s office threatening to send it to collections if money was not sent. A check for $400 was sent, since there was no idea of how much was actually owed. 3 months and 1 day after the unit was installed, collections was calling, saying that there was a breach of contract and nearly $3000 was owed immediately. Credit would have been compromised. Since the house is in my name, this would be me. So I paid it, figuring I would attempt to straighten it out after. They told me that the $400 arrived one day too late, and they would deduct the $3000 to $2500 and the unit would never be connected… it would be permanently cancelled, broken door jam and all. When I began my calls, I was told that a supervisor would have to call me back. Over a period of three month, there was only one call back and it was to the house with the system, not to me. The final call was a young woman in Utah that told me I needed to contact the attorney’s office if I had question about the money, it had nothing to do with them. The unit still had not been connected ( that was the purpose of the final call… I did not want a delinquent bill for something we did not know we had). The $400 was above and beyond the payment for the 3 months ( with no service because it was incorrectly installed ). The $3000 I sent was given to a third party ( apparently NorthStar is just the installer, there is another company that owned the unit), I have no idea who they are. So in closing, I have a broken door with a security system that has never worked, and we are $3400.00 poorer in the process. I believe we were scammed! This is no way to run a business!

NorthStar has been awesome for my wife and I. We have loved using Total Connect to arm our system and access our door locks. We haven’t had any problems. We read our contract and understand all the terms – so maybe that’s why we have been nothing but happy with our system and service and don’t feel like anything was hidden from us.

I agree they target “senior citizens” under the ruse that you have been, “randomly selected”. Not true! This salesman snooped around my yard, knocked on my door at 5:30, or 6:00 pm at night; right when you are trying to relax after work! Ignored me when I asked if this was a hard, locked-in contract. Then about an hour later the installers rushed in, out of no where, and took forever, 3 hours later they finally finished installing, nearly 10pm! The next day my “buyer’s remorse” set in. You only have 3 days people to cancel their service without owing! Call right away, fax and write them, don’t deal with them, it’s a bad move you’ll regret later!

    Update:

I don’t have time for this company’s nonsense, they are AWFUL, AWFUL!!! I am ready to sue! I cancelled in the nick of time, before the 3- day limit. Thank God! Now, after over 2 months ago, I got a suspicious voice mail message from someone posing as a suspicious, “independent contractor” wanting to come over and “talk”, also to “remove my equipment” that was never hooked-up right! Doesn’t work! I don’t trust them and don’t want them in my home ever again! They should read their own contract that states, they have only “20 days” to pick-up their own faulty equipment, otherwise it is yours to dispose of, keep, whatever! I don’t want it but can’t trust them in my home; read most of their reviews consumers! They can’t be trusted! BBB gives them a C-. I give them a F+. Any good reviews must have been posted by employee family members, or paid participants- Liars! They should be named, Crooks R’ Us!!!

I do strongly advise not to do business with Northstar Alarm Services. Mainly due to the overpriced monthly charges and inflexible contract. I have not used the equipment and made a huge mistake agreeing to have it installed. I never used their security system and ended up paying unreasonable monthly payments anyway for 5 years!

They came in selling a promise that if I didn’t like the alarm system or that if it didnt work for us that they would take it out and repair anything that didnt look right. They ruined two doors and multiple drywall spots and one plug. They said in the contract it states they wont fix anything. However the salesmen they had come over promised to take care of everything no matter what even if he had to come over himself. Neither the company or salesman did anything to fix the situation. Not happy at all with this crappy company.

They lied. They said they would pay the remainder of the company I had before. They did not pay all of it – only a portion. I had already paid 6 nos to the old company before I got any settlement from them. I would not recommend them. I should have stayed with the company I was with. Northstar went up on the price per month. RATS.

This company and vision security just merged and I have to tell you the at vision security is the most evil, manipulating company I’ve ever had the displeasure of getting into a contract with. They had the wrong address for 6+ months and police were sent to the wrong residence when the alarm went off. They had the wrong name for our account and also charged us months after the contract was cancelled. In fact, they are still charging us and they will not stop after multiple calls to the company and promises that they will stop because the contract is up.

This company is not willing to work with their clients, unless they are misleading them into signing a contract for their services. I was very clear to the representative that came to my door that I was renting a property for just a few years. If I had realized they were talking me into agreeing to five years of service, I never would have done so. They should not be able to provide service for short-term renters, if they do not have a plan for short term service (and their representatives are not upfront about it). Also, like most good businesses that truly work for their customers, they should have a reasonable cancelation option, even if it’s a fee, like other reliable home service companies offer. I was shocked that they talk you into the plan and then are not willing to work with you after the papers are signed. Making renters sign an agreement for a HOMEOWNER’s security system seems illegal. The things they are good at are coaching their sales representatives to mislead clients, writing misleading contacts, and not providing quality customer service.
