Pros

Free, Professional Installation

This alarm system will appeal to those wishing to avoid the DIY approach. All NorthStar security systems are professionally installed for free when you sign up. Additionally, if you move within one year of purchasing, NorthStar will re-install your system for free at your new home. The caveat is that you are required to sign a new, minimum 60-month contract at the new rate.

Lifetime Service Protection

Make sure to read the fine print of the lifetime service protection before choosing NorthStar based on their warranty. NorthStar claims to have the best warranty and guarantee in the home monitoring business. The company has a lifetime warranty on their home security hardware, false alarm protection guarantee, and free lifetime battery replacement. In the first year, new customers are not charged for service calls, and they won’t be charged if they move.

The lifetime service protection from NorthStar does not cover your equipment if it is damaged due to weather conditions, natural disasters, remodeling/renovation, power surges, or your own accidents.

The one-year free of service calls is not actually free. NorthStar states that they charge a minimum of $35 as a “Trip Charge” for each home visit. There are additional charges for “Emergencies” outside of business hours.

Positive NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Even though NorthStar Alarm is rated 4.8 out of 10 by consumers on Best Home Security Companys, the company has had several positive reviews from new customers in 2019. These positive reviews highlight the following:

  • Technicians. New customers of NorthStar Alarm are very pleased with the technicians and customer service they receive right out of the gate. Service is described as friendly, knowledgeable, quick, and quick.
  • Explanation of system. These customers also feel like they know how to use their alarm and integrate their system with the app and panel.

Cons

Unknown Packages and Alarm Pricing

NorthStar does not seem to have organized home security packages available for purchasing or monitoring. Instead, potential customers will need to go through NorthStar’s equipment and pick which home security and home automation features they want. Pricing is not available on-line for equipment or monitoring.

NorthStar does offer 24/7 monitoring, but again, the price is undisclosed. It’s also undisclosed whether or not equipment comes with the monitoring, or needs to be purchased separately. The main monitoring plan seems to have a back-up generator in place.

Long Contract

NorthStar requires a minimum 60-month (5 year) contract. If you move in the middle of that 5-year contract, your contract will start over with the company at their current monitoring rates. On top of that, your contract will automatically renew unless you cancel in writing, 60-days prior to the end of your contract.

Negative NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Before 2019, most of the reviews on Best Home Security Companys were negative. Since then, we have seen a mix of happy and unhappy customers. Below are the biggest complaints from reviewers for NorthStar Alarm in the last year:

  • Contract. A lot of customers are angry that their contract extended after purchasing new equipment or that it automatically renewed. The company’s minimum 5-year contract was a lot for most people. To cancel a contract, customers report it costs $1,800-$3,000
  • Customer service. A common complaint about NorthStar is that it’s difficult or impossible to get ahold of the company outside of their service hours. Others have commented that the company does not return calls. When people could get ahold of customer service, they did not have positive things to say about the interactions. There are also several mentions of technician service and the fees accompanied by service.
  • False alarms. Even though the company has alarm protection guarantee, many customers have left reviews about false alarms. Local police can charge individuals for each false alarm after a warning.

Not Available Nationwide

NorthStar is licensed in the following 30 states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MO, MN, NC, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI. View Nationwide Companies.

Recommendation

We do not recommend using NorthStar Alarm services at this time. The company has a length 5-year contract, whereas most home security companies have 3-year contracts or even no contracts. Additionally, your contract may auto-renew with NorthStar Alarm when you move, purchase new equipment, or forget to cancel. Their “lifetime service protection” has many caveats and should be read carefully. Lastly, we do not like that the equipment and monitoring costs, as well as the actual home security packages, are not displayed on their site.

This security service is a huge scam! We were only renting a property for a year and the representative said it would be month-to-month and easy to cancel whenever. That is not the case. They make you pay for five years, whether you live there or not. The company is not willing to work with you on this no matter what the case may be. (In fact, another review online says the signer died and their relative had to pay the rest of the contract.) Larger companies, like AT&T and Comcast unstand the importance of being willing to work with their clients to give them the best service. Northstar is just looking for people they can trick into signing they long-term contract (which is longer than most people have the same Internet, cable, or even cell service, these days)!

You will make dozens of phone calls and continue to pay for many months after cancelling the service. Canceling Northstar is like hiring a thief to continuously steal your money. You’re not paying for protection against the criminals. Northstar is the criminal. It’s not worth the headache! Please avoid!!

Horrible! They made me believe that paperwork didn’t matter and affected my credit! Customer service is terrible! They pulled some fast ones. Website doesn’t work. Terrible company to work with. Wish I could get out of the contract. I would not recommend the company.

BEWARE OF NORTHSTAR. They are THIEVES. They continued to steal money from my bank account after the 60 month contract had ended (and I sent a termination letter). Wells Fargo fraud department investigated them twice and Northstar was forced to reimburse me the money they had stolen on 2 separate occasions. Then they tried to steal money from my bank account a third time but Wells Fargo had put a block against them. HA HA. Check their BBB rating, there are 280+ complaints against them that are similar to my dealings with them. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!!

Mother had Northstar services turned on. She was 91 years old, legally blind and unable to sign forms. I had legal power of attorney to take care of her business. The salesman told me that it didn’t matter who’s name the contract was in, only the address. WRONG. My mother has passed away and I am stuck with a $2600.00 bill to cancel the contract, even with ta death certificate, because the salesman put the contract in my name. I had Northstar installed in my home also, just next door from my Mother’s house. You can bet when my contract is up I am cancelling. I have already sent in my cancellation request even though I have more than 4 years left. If I ever get enough money, I will pay the penalty and cancel sooner and to back the the company I had for over 15 years.
Oh, don’t expect good service either. We have had several times that the alarm has gone off and asked them not to contact authorities because we did not have a problem, but they sent EMS and Sheriff anyway.

We left another company after our cameras were not working for over 6 months due to a crappy DVR. Our salesman, Al was absolutely thorough and provided clear information regarding our order. Our Install Tech, Michael was not only over qualified, he was personable and took the extra time to explain everything. Now, our cameras work, I can control the AC/Heat (kids realize they can’t change the temp now without me knowing) and my electric bill has since dropped ! We had trouble with the auto door lock and they sent a tech to fix it SAME DAY! I’m not sure why the others had such trouble, our service and people have been phenomenal!

I do not set my alarm any longer because of fear of my alarm going off when I am not home. Unfortunately I cannot cancel the contract because I will incur cancellation fees which are unfair. I live in a area where security is of the upmost importantce and theft , break-ins are high. The history of my false alarms and many visits from the technician still have not solved the issue. You think that they would be willing to compensate me for several months of not using but they are not. I am stuck with this crappy company’s technology until this contract is over and I am tracking the expiration of it carefully and will not recommend this service to my worst enemy

Worst company ever!!!, This ia a company that targets seniors. Once they get into your home, they sign you up to a five year. Tell you they will cancel your current contract and don’t.
They have an automatic renewable contract. You must submit a written notice two months before end of contract in order to cancel.
They install an application on your phone that you can’t use, then bill you $5.00 a month for it
I would recommend that you call the B/B before letting this company rep into your home.
Im a 74 year old senior, on A fixed income.
    Buyer beware.

The company delivered adequate service and I do not have a problem with that. However, when I went to cancel I found that they had automatically renewed my contract for 18 months. This provision for automatic renewal was in the contract, but there was no notification that the renewal was about to start. Now I am responsible for another 18 months and if I forget to cancel before that, then another 18 months and so on.

NorthStar does not even offer a discount on the unused period after the initial contract period has been completed. So much for customer considerations.

It is not reasonable to expect a senior citizen to remember the notify the company prior to expiration of the contract to avoid renewal if unwanted.

Be warned, NorthStar does not have your interest in mindl

NorthStar took advantage of an 89 year old widow. They signed her up with an irrevocable 5 year contract. This was not explained adequately to her. At this age, who knows if she will even be in her home in 2018. It too 2 months to contact the company and they insisted that in order to cancel we would have to pay the remainder of the contract or have it transferred to another relative. Nobody wants it. Furthermore, I was told that unless you notify the company 60 days ahead of time your contract will be extended another 18 months. Some reviews that I read said that this notice better be early and certified otherwise it will be lost, misplaced or who knows what.

I’m a very unhappy customer. They are the worst corporation I have ever dealt with. I called the company and told them I was moving and didn’t need the service anymore I was told to take it with me. Didn’t understand it and how could I. So I went ahead and kept paying them letting it come out of my account for 5 years. My contract was up and I was inform that because I didn’t submit a written 60 days notice to cancel the service that was in fine, small print when u sign. So they automated sign me up for another 15 months, not fair and I don’t understand it. I have talked to serve customer service associates and a manager no help. The manager made a statement it’s up to us if we want to accept your 60 days notice. I asked to speak to someone else and was told he was the only manager there giving me word for word, so rude. Horrible customer service.
