Pros

Free, Professional Installation

This alarm system will appeal to those wishing to avoid the DIY approach. All NorthStar security systems are professionally installed for free when you sign up. Additionally, if you move within one year of purchasing, NorthStar will re-install your system for free at your new home. The caveat is that you are required to sign a new, minimum 60-month contract at the new rate.

Lifetime Service Protection

Make sure to read the fine print of the lifetime service protection before choosing NorthStar based on their warranty. NorthStar claims to have the best warranty and guarantee in the home monitoring business. The company has a lifetime warranty on their home security hardware, false alarm protection guarantee, and free lifetime battery replacement. In the first year, new customers are not charged for service calls, and they won’t be charged if they move.

The lifetime service protection from NorthStar does not cover your equipment if it is damaged due to weather conditions, natural disasters, remodeling/renovation, power surges, or your own accidents.

The one-year free of service calls is not actually free. NorthStar states that they charge a minimum of $35 as a “Trip Charge” for each home visit. There are additional charges for “Emergencies” outside of business hours.

Positive NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Even though NorthStar Alarm is rated 4.8 out of 10 by consumers on Best Home Security Companys, the company has had several positive reviews from new customers in 2019. These positive reviews highlight the following:

  • Technicians. New customers of NorthStar Alarm are very pleased with the technicians and customer service they receive right out of the gate. Service is described as friendly, knowledgeable, quick, and quick.
  • Explanation of system. These customers also feel like they know how to use their alarm and integrate their system with the app and panel.

Cons

Unknown Packages and Alarm Pricing

NorthStar does not seem to have organized home security packages available for purchasing or monitoring. Instead, potential customers will need to go through NorthStar’s equipment and pick which home security and home automation features they want. Pricing is not available on-line for equipment or monitoring.

NorthStar does offer 24/7 monitoring, but again, the price is undisclosed. It’s also undisclosed whether or not equipment comes with the monitoring, or needs to be purchased separately. The main monitoring plan seems to have a back-up generator in place.

Long Contract

NorthStar requires a minimum 60-month (5 year) contract. If you move in the middle of that 5-year contract, your contract will start over with the company at their current monitoring rates. On top of that, your contract will automatically renew unless you cancel in writing, 60-days prior to the end of your contract.

Negative NorthStar Alarm Reviews

Before 2019, most of the reviews on Best Home Security Companys were negative. Since then, we have seen a mix of happy and unhappy customers. Below are the biggest complaints from reviewers for NorthStar Alarm in the last year:

  • Contract. A lot of customers are angry that their contract extended after purchasing new equipment or that it automatically renewed. The company’s minimum 5-year contract was a lot for most people. To cancel a contract, customers report it costs $1,800-$3,000
  • Customer service. A common complaint about NorthStar is that it’s difficult or impossible to get ahold of the company outside of their service hours. Others have commented that the company does not return calls. When people could get ahold of customer service, they did not have positive things to say about the interactions. There are also several mentions of technician service and the fees accompanied by service.
  • False alarms. Even though the company has alarm protection guarantee, many customers have left reviews about false alarms. Local police can charge individuals for each false alarm after a warning.

Not Available Nationwide

NorthStar is licensed in the following 30 states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, ID, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MO, MN, NC, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI. View Nationwide Companies.

Recommendation

We do not recommend using NorthStar Alarm services at this time. The company has a length 5-year contract, whereas most home security companies have 3-year contracts or even no contracts. Additionally, your contract may auto-renew with NorthStar Alarm when you move, purchase new equipment, or forget to cancel. Their “lifetime service protection” has many caveats and should be read carefully. Lastly, we do not like that the equipment and monitoring costs, as well as the actual home security packages, are not displayed on their site.

Be aware that if you do not cancel more than one month prior to the end of the initial contract, that it renews for another year. I then pay off the last 3 months of the extended contract at the amount they quote and get billed more money for another month. Takes 1 month to get reimbursed. I just got billed more money because the quote they gave to end the contract was not right. I just want to be done with this never ending black hole of withdrawls. They never email you any verification on what they did, so you prove it to the next customer rep.

Alarm service was fair, but customer service is so poor it drops them to a 0. Buyer beware.

They continue to take money out of our account although the service was cancelled. Takes a month to get the money back. They did it again today. I am cancelling the card as soon I get off the phone with them.

HE IS DEAD AND THEY STILL WONT CANCEL!! My husband passed away in March I contacted Northstar and they told me to fax in cancellation notice along with death certificate,I did April 1st. Then in June payments were still being taken out even though I didn’t live at the residence anymore. I contacted my local news who in turn contacted Courtney Brown the media rep at Northstar. We sent directly to her email June 25th the cancellation and death certificate again.I was called and told it would be cancelled and no more payments would be withdrawn. Today I reviewed my bank statement and even last month in September 46.99 was taken out!! HE IS DEAD THEY ARE HORRIBLE! I called again and they acted like they never received anything and said they would call me within the hour. If it is a minute after the hour I will be calling the news again and running this story. Northstar Alarm sales people came to our door and represented themselves as Honeywell employees (alarm equipment company) who were just going around updating alarm panels. They had a Honeywell logo displayed prominently on their shirt. Having encountered this tactic before, and skeptical that an equipment company would just be out door to door from the good of their hearts, I asked questions and found out that they were actually Northstar salespeople. They were continually shady and I didn’t trust much of what they said.

I really like the equipment. When I speak to people within the company, they are pleasant, but when my alarm stopped working three weeks after being installed, it took them several weeks to get someone out to fix the system. After speaking to the account manager himself 24 hours before his arrival, he claimed to not know what the problem was when he finally arrived in site. When put on the phone with the office for confirmation that the system got fixed, the person in the corporate office was unconcerned with our issues.

Worst company we have ever dealt with. Everything other customers have talked about: misleading selling techniques, terrible customer service, trying to give you the run around whenever you have problems. We had a camera installed and it has never worked. They told us it was our internet connection that was not strong enough. We updated our connection and it still does not work. We are trying to get them to get the camera back and lower our fee and of course they said they would call back and they have not. We were stupid for not checking reviews before signing the contract. We have definitely learned a lesson. I hope I can save someone the pain of having to deal with them. I also hope once we get close to canceling ( we will probably end up terminating the contract earlier) that that will be relatively painless, although I am scared now. I just cannot believe they can legally do this……

This is the worst corporation I have ever dealt with and I am a Comcast subscriber. They have lied, manipulated the contract and continued to harass me with no clause to separate from service after I requested for them to take the equipment back and cancel the contract once we moved to a different state. I wouldn’t refer this nightmare to my worst enemy. Still owe over $850 on a contract to a house we no longer live at.

Worse company ever, I have been trying to cancel my service since March of this year and I still can not get it cancelled. When you try to cancel they tell you you can’t or that your contract has been extended with out your permission. There’s a reason they do not belong to the BBB, because they are a horrible greedy company. I say if you are even considering doing business your read everything and do not take the sales reps word for anything.

Was lied to by the salesperson regarding the length of the contract. I remember him showing me different costs for differing contract lengths but the copy I read later showed only 5 years. He flat out lied and had some kind of duplicate form.

Also had problems with the installation and most of the door sensors fell off after 6 mos. I tries calling NS to have them fix the problem and they want to charge me for a service call.

Now that I have moved and no longer at the residence I can not get out of the contract. The 3 years I signed up for is now 5 and the only resolution they offer is pay up.

Avoid this company at all costs. It is a scam masquerading as an alarm company.

The secretly had us initial a spot on our 5 year contract 5 YEARS ago that if we didn’t give them 60 days notice of cancellation BEFORE our 5 years was up they automatically re-enroll us for 18 months at $40 a month!!! COMPLETELY DISHONEST!!!! NO indication our 60 day limit was fast approaching. Actually moved houses BEFORE the 5 years was up but AFTER 60 days before so now they are trying to make us pay another 18 months for NOTHING!!!!! As dishonest as they come. They ALSO…punctured my bathroom waterlines when installing the alarm system and did NOT send a professional to fix…had the father of one of the techs come and tear into my wet wall…HORRIBLE>>STAY AWAY!!!! But since I was trying to enroll to help out a relative meet his “bonus quota” I didn’t rock the boat…should have taken their dishonest butts to court!

I can only say (like so many other) if there was a score less than 0 that would be my rating. There is no customer service with this company. Management will not return phone calls, nor will technicians. This whole company is a scam. So wish I had read reviews before being so “stupid” and falling for their line of lies!

I lived in a place that needed home security because a lot of break-ins around the neighborhood. These guys are professional and have good equipment.

Like anywhere else, understand the contract details and then go forward. I’d pick them over other alarm companies.
