No Upfront Equipment Costs

Protect America is one of the most affordable home security companies in the industry. While other companies will charge anywhere from $99 to over $400 in upfront costs, Protect America currently charges $0 in upfront fees.

Monthly Fees as Low as $19.99

Protect America offers five different home security packages ranging from a locked-in rate starting at $19.99 per month, which is significantly cheaper than competing home security companies.

Lifetime Equipment Warranty

Each package comes with a free lifetime warranty, meaning Protect America will ship replacement parts for all defective equipment at no charge for as long as you are a customer. Once you sign a contract with Protect America, your rate is locked in. They will not raise your monthly monitoring fees as long as you are under contract.

The Choice to Buy or Lease Equipment

After a customer purchases a security system and decides to further their remote access by including home automation they can choose to either purchase the pieces separately (which give the homeowner full ownership of the equipment) or lease a set of equipment which costs the homeowner zero money down (though this option means Protect America maintains the rights to the equipment). The choice to buy or lease is a nice option which many home security companies do not provide.

Variety of Equipment Options

Protect America offers various home security equipment for regular home security systems as well as for home automation features. Here are some details regarding Protect America’s offered equipment:

Mini Pin Pad/Talking Wireless Keypad

The Mini Pin Pad is not necessary, but it does add a level of security in the event of an emergency. These pin pads allow you to call for help and alert the authorities/responders. These pin pads also allow homeowners to alarm and disarm the security system by typing in a personalized code. The pin pad allows for additional convenience and ensures the security system is armed when it needs to be.

Protect America Video Surveillance Cameras

Users will want to place Protect America’s video surveillance cameras in high traffic areas, like by door entries/exits and hallways. Protect America enables users to view video surveillance through their “Smart Connect App.” Live footage from the camera can be viewed at any time from anywhere as long as they have a WiFi connection. The video is of high quality and can be easily accessed.

Sensors

Protect America offers several different types of sensors. They have the door and window sensors which detect whenever the door or window is opened. The Protect America door and window sensors are wireless microsensors which means they do not have to be plugged into your wall and are hidden out of the way. It is advised that customers place a sensor on every door and window for optimum security.

Protect America also has garage door sensors. There can be several thousands of dollars stored in garages, which means it is critically important to protect it. Keep your cars, bikes, tools, and other items stored in your garage safe by installing a garage door sensor. These sensors are mounted on the inside of your garage door.

There is also the option to install motion detectors. These motion sensors are easy to install, and they detect both heat and movement within a 25-foot range in a 90-degree arc. They can be installed in the corners of rooms, and it is recommended to put these in high traffic areas in your home.

Lastly, there is the Glass Break Sensor that is to be mounted in an open space near windows or glass doors that you would like to secure.

New Simon XTi Control Panel

Despite Protect America’s affordability, the company sacrifices nothing in terms of quality. Protect America now offers the new Simon XTi, a modern, sleek, and innovative control panel which integrates seamlessly with your smartphone through the Protect America app. The Simon XT Touchscreen allows you to voice commands and offers a substitute for when you cannot check the main control panel.

Home Automation Options

In addition to a wide array of home security features (including motion detector, night vision cameras, door window sensors, glass break sensors and more), the company offers a number of home automation solutions to help you control your security system remotely through Protect America’s SMART Connect app.

Protect America’s basic home automation package runs through the home security control panel. The home automation equipment adds wireless control to everyday household tasks such as turning lights off and on and controlling various appliances. It can even lock and unlock doors. All of this equipment is able to function together through Z-Wave technology, which is the most widely recognized standard for home automation. Also, the system is a self-install product, meaning the homeowner can install the new equipment at their convenience.

Lengthy 36-Month Contract

One downside of Protect America is its 36-month contract and its cancellation policy. Some home security companies offer their home security services with shorter contracts or no contracts at all; however, a 36-month contract is quite common within the industry.

If you do decide to cancel Protect America’s services, you will be required to pay 100% of the remaining balance of your contract. Other home security companies may only require you to pay a percentage of the remaining balance. Paying the full balance can end up costing you hundreds of dollars if you haven’t been on the contract very long. Be sure to research Protect America’s terms before committing to a contract.

Cancellation Policy

New customers have 30 days from the date their package was shipped to return their equipment without being bound to the 36-month long-term contract.

Video Streaming Not Available with the Landline Monitoring Service

While live and recorded video streaming is available on Protect America’s broadband and cellular monitoring services, it is not available with landline monitoring, meaning customers will need to pay extra for this important security feature.

The Bottom Line

Based on our research, you likely won’t find a more affordable home security company than Protect America. It is a solid home security company with packages starting at only $19.99 per month with no upfront or installation costs.

Protect America’s lifetime equipment warranty is a special feature that few other home security companies can match. It should be noted, however, if you are looking to hire a company to professionally install your home security system then Protect America is not for you.     I just spent an hour on the phone with Pete, who must have lots of patience. He walked me through each step for downloading my system onto my iphone. He was most helpful, and encouraging – even when I wasn’t sure I could disconnect my system. I did succeed in getting my iphone programmed -thanks to Pete. At 73 years old I feel very “high tech”.

    I posted a review on here in November, when I experienced a total Protect America failure at all levels: customer service, equipment, emergency number, website, etc. Since then, I have tried multiple times to cancel account and have not had any service since then. Yet, they continue to bill me, pretend to set up call-back times and don’t call at the scheduled times but instead on different days at random times when I’m not available, and then claim they called back as scheduled. They are also trying to extort 6 months of payments in exchange for ending my contract, ignoring the fact that their service has failed, which itself is a violation of the contract and grounds for termination.

    Is anyone interested in joining a class action lawsuit action the company? I am looking into that now.

    HORRIBLE! Tried o switch from ADT…NO THANK YOU! Customer Service is awful, hold time is very long EVERY TIME that you call. You have to install equipment yourself, equipment is to be place with Velcro sticky on walls….TACKY! To return the equipment you have to pay for return OUT OF POCKET!!!

    Been with this company for 7 years, started out great, since mid 2018 their customer service has taken a catastrophic turn for the worst.
    Sales will pick up the line immediately however service is non existent. Hard to say if they can be reliable in the event of a problem. Have spent hours trying to reach them for a simple problem. Stay away is my recommendation.

    This company has intentionally deceptive billing and cancellation processes.

    I have filed a complaint with the BBB and the CFPB, but suffice it to say, you need to select a different provider.

    They refuse to allow you to submit your cancellation request unless it’s within 30 days of your last contracted service date BUT then they will tell you your service cancellation won’t take place until the ‘following billing cycle’ which means you are paying for 2+ additional months.

    When you try to call them to cancel, they will transfer you multiple times, put you on hold for 20+ minutes and try to get you to stay with many (many) upsell/continue service offers.

    All in all, I was on the phone with them for almost an hour to simply cancel the service.

    Then, they say you need to sign a PDF cancellation document that will arrive via email in 3-5 business days (again possibly pushing you into their next arbitrary billing cycle, making you pay for additional months of the service).

    I have found that, although I personally signed the cancellation document in October, I still see them charging my credit card today – January 19th. I have issued a chargeback with my card, but this is ridiculous.

    Stay away from this horrible company.

    Terrible customer service, terrible service, the installers who “attempted” to help were less than helpful and acted like it was a chore to assist. When attempting to cancel service the runaround to actually speak with someone was so ridiculous that I was sitting on hold for over 30 minutes before finally giving up. I sent the equipment back within 30 days, the contract was unclear on what constituted cancellation and they continued to charge my account without having any equipment actually being monitored. Then they refused to cancel the contract and stated I had to pay for all the years. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Use Vivint or Ring

    In July of 2018 I called Protect America to cancel my service since I was moving out of state. The agent stated that they would reduce my charge to $9.99 to hold my service to see if I wanted to reinstate it once I got re-established in my new home. Due to past experiences I chose to go with another company. I expected a $9.99 charge. Later I noticed that Protect America had continued to charge for my services at the previous address even though I had not lived there for months. They never charged the agreed upon amount of $9.99 but charged the complete amount each and every month. After a lengthy discussion with their credit department on 11/14/2018, the manager agreed that I would only pay a portion of the now large amount due. I had her send me an email stating our agreement and that the account was paid in full and closed out since I no longer trusted a verbal conversation with Protect America. On 1/14/2019 I received another bill requesting another payment as the account was never closed as was stated verbally and also in writing. BEWARE IF YOU EVER HAVE TO CANCEL SERVICE. YOU MAY NEVER STOP RECEIVING A BILL NO MATTER WHAT IS TOLD TO YOU!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A RACKET!!!

    The length of the term was never made clear to me or the fact that there was even some sort of contract. I am moving to another place with someone who already has the same alarm service and Protect America has not been helpful in providing options to me. I either pay TWO years of service or transfer my service to someone else. Thanks a lot “Protect America”. I also chatted with someone on the customer service team who was very rude. When I told her I preferred to call customer service and have a more direct conversation she replied with “I am customer service ma”am”.

    I’ve had the same problems as many other folks commenting here. The panel and keychain devices are cheaply made and fall apart easily, when the alarm goes off for no real reason, it’s impossible to reach anyone to have them turn it off, I’ve spent hours on the phone on hold trying to get a hold of customer service reps and supervisors. To boot, they refuse to cancel my contract with having to fork over hundreds of dollars even though their products and service are defective.

    I would never recommend Protect America to any homeowner. They are atrocious. The only way to get them to change their terrible practices is to shame them publicly. I’ve tweeted at them, and I encourage others to use social media against them as well.

    Extremely difficult to cancel. I called 3 separate times and signed email to cancel and they still billed my bank account. They would not refund me the bill. Very frustrated and I feel robbed. Their customer service have very nice people but I don’t trust them.

    The sensors failed all the time and the equipment is bulky and outdated. But when you try to cancel they make you pay the full amount of the three year contract. Avoid these people if you value your money. So many other services out there — like Ring — where you can get better equipment for less money and no contract. This pyramid scheme will hopefully be out of business soon.

    We have had this service for over 2 years and we have had bothing but problems. False alarms, malfunctioning equipment, loss of contact on doors and windows. We have finally tried to cancel as we are outside of our contract, but every time we try, they send us back into the call que and they continue to bill us. Do not use this company!!!

    The customer service has been a bit spotty. I’ve had issues with covering my garage and having false alarms and the end result was just not having my garage protected. IT would seem that they could present additional options like an extra keypad int he garage but no one has presented any useful solutions.
