Protect America is one of the most affordable home security companies in the industry. While other companies will charge anywhere from $99 to over $400 in upfront costs, Protect America currently charges $0 in upfront fees. Protect America offers five different home security packages ranging from a locked-in rate at an average of $43.99 per month which is significantly cheaper than competing home security companies. Each package comes with a free lifetime warranty, meaning Protect America will ship replacement parts for all defective equipment at no charge for as long as you are a customer. Once you sign a contract with Protect America, your rate is locked in. They will not raise your monthly monitoring fees as long as you are under contract.

Despite Protect America’s affordability, the company sacrifices nothing in terms of quality. Protect America now offers the new Simon XTi, a modern, sleek, and innovative control panel which integrates seamlessly with your smartphone through the Protect America mobile app. In addition to a wide array of home security features (including motion detector, night vision cameras, door window sensors, glass break sensors and more), the company offers a number of home automation solutions to help you control your security system remotely. Protect America’s SMART Connect mobile app controls door locks, lighting, and appliances, arms/disarms your entire security system, and streams or records live footage from up to two of your security cameras simultaneously. Protect America offers flexible monitoring options for nearly every budget. Home security monitoring can be conducted via landline (least expensive), broadband, and cellular communication. Few home security companies provide all three monitoring services.

Protect America comes highly recommended by its customers. Customers who left reviews on our site have been boasting about Protect America’s customer service. They also note that Protect America’s do-it-yourself security systems, which are shipped right to your door, are very easy to install. Protect America has simplified the self-installation process with 24/7 support and a collection of online video tutorials. Their lifetime warranty on equipment helps give peace of mind both when installing the system and using it knowing that if something breaks or no longer functions properly, Protect America will replace it free of charge. Protect America serves customers in all 50 states, which is somewhat rare in the home security industry. Many of its competitors have a much more limited national reach.

The Bad

One thing that we did not like about Protect America is its 36-month contract and its cancellation policy. Other home security companies offer their home security services with much shorter contracts or no contracts at all. And if it so happens that you decide to cancel Protect America’s service, you will be required to pay 100% of the remaining balance of your contract. Other home security companies may only require you to pay a percentage of the remaining balance (some as low as 20%). Paying the full balance can end up costing you hundreds of dollars if you haven’t been on the contract very long..

New customers have 30 days from the date their package was shipped to return their equipment without being bound to the 36-month contract. And while live and recorded video streaming is available on Protect America’s broadband and cellular monitoring services, it is not available with landline monitoring, meaning customers will need to pay extra for this important security feature.

Customers don’t like the 36-month contract either and have reported several issues revolving around the contract. Other customers complained that Protect America’s equipment was not functioning properly, specifically window sensors and door sensors triggering false alarms.

The Bottom Line

Based on our research, you likely won’t find a more affordable home security company than Protect America. It is a solid home security company with packages starting at only $19.99 per month with no upfront or installation costs. Protect America’s lifetime equipment warranty is a special feature that few other home security companies can match. It should be noted, however, if you are looking to hire a company to professionally install your home security system then Protect America is not for you. Protect America’s 36-month contract and cancellation policy may deter you from purchasing its service, but given the high volume of positive user reviews praising Protect America’s customer service, it’s easy to understand why most of Protect America’s customers renew their contracts more than once. Protect America is a great choice for those looking to customize their home security system solution. Protect America is a good self-install alarm system option. It comes with both the most equipment and the least amount of upfront costs.

    I'm AMAZED by this company! I had been with ADT for 13 years! ADT wouldn't help me with their equipment, so I researched other companies. I found Protect America and I'm so happy that I switched! We had NO out of pocket expense! I'm now paying less for wireless than I was with ADT for a landline connection! My husband was able to install with no problem. This company treats you the way companies should treat someone! Derek explained everything to me, helped me figure out what I needed, without trying to upsale me and was super helpful!     This system was acquired to replace my 3-year old ADT system. Much more robust, the monthly fee is considerably lower and does not increase like ADT has done, and the sensors are pre-loaded so installation is a charm. The APP for iPad, IPhone or Android is very easy to load and use. Beats the crap out of using those small hand FOBs (but they are included also).Read More

    Buyer beware. After having service for 5 years, Protect America was no longer supporting our equipment because the equipment they originally sold us was evidently using 2G cell service. When 2G no longer worked, Protect America never called, did not email, nor send anything in the postal service that our equipment needed to be replaced. They also did not send out replacement equipment, even though they knew our equipment was no longer supported. For over four months, they continued to charge my card $46.99 each month even though they knew we were no longer being monitored by them. Had someone broken in our house while we were asleep, or had there been a fire, we could have been murdered, or our house could have burned down. When I called to cancel because of the lack of taking my family’s security into consideration (we are out of our 36 month initial contract, and are on month to month service), they refused to cancel service until we paid them an additional $46.99 to pay for next month’s monitoring, yet again they know they are NOT even providing monitoring service because they still have NOT replaced the 2G equipment. To make it worse, they told me on the phone that it’s my responsibility to make sure the equipment was still working (they passed the blame onto me). There was no indication on the control panel that it was not communicating to the cell towers, and we could still arm it, but when an alarm would go off, it would only sound an audible alarm in the house. No monitoring. The only reason we found out it wasn’t being monitored was because an alarm in the house did sound (false alarm), but no one from the monitoring service called. So, I called them to find out why no one called. That was when they told me that my service was no longer being monitored because our system used 2G cell service, and they stopped supporting it four months earlier. Mind you, they sold us this 2G system in August 2015. We had 4G service in our area in 2015, so they sold us outdated equipment from the very beginning, as “new” equipment. Buyer Beware.

    If you are considering this company – think twice!!!! You are paying for the air! They do not monitor anything! They have no idea your system is working or not! Even if you told them that this is not working! My system was on the dumpster for over a year but they still was billing me every months like this is still active. I notified them that I sold the house but nobody care! I said that I am leaving abroad – they did not care! They went after me that I have debt a year after I notified them! They are liers and thefts! Find somebody really reliable that you would know that you have a shoulder!

    I’ve been with this company for 9 years as a customer. They charged my card every month without any issues. 2 months ago my daugter came home early and set the alarm off. No one was home and my daughter did not remember the pass code to silence it. The system kept going off for about 5 minutes and Protect America neither called me nor the police. I’ve called them to discontinue my service and disconnected all their equipment. Sure enough I refused to pay for month of February since they did not respond to the alarm. I don’t care if it was them or their equipment issue. Now for last 2 months they keep calling me 2 to 4 times a day, every day asking for money. They add up regular monthly charges every month, saying I have to pay everything in full before they can stop the service. I keep telling them they did a crappy job in February and they have not been monitoring my home following months, so no money. After 9 years and thousands of dollars they got from me, they could simply write off 1 month charge to end our relationship properly. Instead they think it’s better to go on with harassment calls. Pitiful company.

    If you want to get harrassed several times a day with sales calls from people who will not be able to help you, then you should contact Protect America! After 20 minutes of sales nonsense on the phone, and being transferred to “my manager so you can get an even better deal”, you will come to learn that unless you give them a $99 deposit by credit card over the phone, Protect America will not even give you a proposal or COST for installing a home security system. Their sales process is incredibly annoying and intended to get you to spend so much of your time on the phone that you almost (almost!!) feel compelled to give them the $99 just so you’ll feel like you are going to get something in return for your time. Don’t do it. No business with any ethical standards would require you to pay money just to get a simple proposal/quote for the work you are inquiring about.

    They used high pressure sales techniques on my 90 year old grandma, conned her into renewing a new 36 month contract thinking she was still month to month. The equipment is useless, the window and door alarms consistently fall off and the technology is pretty much obsolete. The medical pendent they gave her does not have the features less expensive programs offer. Customer service is terrible. Please know, as a company that is supposed to offer “protection” they do NOT offer basic core of valuing people, it is just about the bottom line.

    They make you wait until the last month of the contract to be able to terminate the contract. If you are one day past 30 days prior, they will charge you a month’s service fee. Run, Run, Run from these people. They are also expensive. There were times on weekends when I couldn’t test the system.

    This company sucks Do not and i repeat DO NOT contract for security with this company.I moved 1 year before the 3 year term was up.I called them on a regular basis (at least 6 times)to cancel the service.They never cancelled and I was getting calls from emergency dispatchers for a problem at the property that I no longer lived at; Had to pay the full balance of the contract term;A years of payments for nothing.
    After the end of the contract they continued to bill my credit card;had to get the credit card company to stop any future payments to them.Now they are calling and emailing saying that I owe for service after the contract period because I did not follow the proper procedure in the cancellation process.Are you kidding me.They are really a bunch of losers that you do not want to get involved with.

    I was a loyal customer for 3 years. When I tried to cancel all they give me is the run around. My contract ended in January. I called in November and was told all set, re affirmed in January – same person said no worries it is cancelled and 4 months later… still being billed. The funny part is they said I was using the alarm but I disconnected and boxed it in January. This company is fraud and should be shut down. I am lodging an attorney general complaint. I am done with them, promising and not delivering. No one puts anything in writing but they expect you to honor their stuff in writing. The worse company ever. I would not recommend to anyone.

    They are completely rigid to their contract. I would never lock myself into something like this again. We sold our house after 2 years of having the system (of the 3 year contract w/ Protect America) and the new buyers had said they would set up the service but never did. They offer no buyout clause, but just want you to continue the monitoring. We were getting calls from the company for alarms at a house that we no longer owned or lived in, so we had to stop the monitoring, but they still want to charge the monthly fee. I inquired about a buyout, or something of the like, as they were no longer providing a service, but they declined. I was told by their customer service that ADT offers a buyout clause, but they do not. When I called to just pay off the remaining balance to end the contract, they pushed back on even that, saying I could only cancel 90 days before the end of the contract. I just think that this is awful customer service, and I would never, ever, recommend someone going with them. They lock customers into a rigid contract, and I find them to be purposefully misleading and they aren’t forthcoming with information.

    Nothing but thieves. I called after my 3 years was up to cancel. Takes forever to get a person. The first person said we will get you taken care of. Call apparently dropped after i explain why i am cancelling. They understood said no problem. I never heard from them again. 4 months later i look through accounts and see they had been charging me the whole time. Furious!!!!. Do not use!!!

    Good: low upfront costs

    Bad: panel is huge, looks ancient. The camera doesn’t rotate. The panel must pick up cell service so not all locations in house will work. In order for my panel to work properly, I would have to purchase additional equipment.

You are stuck in a 36 month contract if you dont send a certifued letter of cancellation before the 30 days are over. Third rate technology in the quality of their equipment.     This service is some of the cheasiest equipment out there. The motion dectors do not stay in place the fall off the walls and there is no alert letting you know that they Have been moved tampered with or out of place. The indoor camera only begins recording once the home is broken into and the alarm actually goes off there is a delay in response time which is a joke because a thief can remove the camera before the alarm even goes off. Cancelling this service is complicated they transfer you a million times and the department has different operating hours and no weekends. Now I am being held hostage in a contract because I am considered in term all of 1 day. Because the weekends do count.

    The customer service is poor, at the beginning to lure you into the lengthy contract everything is good. Once you call because issues like a defective control panel in less the a week of installation you are on your own. To get the panel replace you will have to pay for it (did I mention less than a week old). Wait until you call to do your monthly test, if it’s your first time they will snap at you awiynout proper information and when the system fails ask you to call back another department where the person is so condescending like they giving you a favor. Last time I check I’m paying for a service. So if you are willing to go with a lengthy contract and poor customer service skills this is the company for you. I’m stuck for 3 years and can’t wait to be over to finish. Worst experience ever.

    Protect America is a SCAM! The service never worked properly, calling the police to our home unnecessarily, every time there was any movement. We believed we cancelled this “contract” over 8 years ago. We learned upon moving that Protect America had been billing our credit card for 8 years (we believed it was a credit card protection service.) Protect America wanted us to pay for the time after we left our home. Protect America didn’t have a correct phone number, email address nor had they communicated with us for 8 years! Yet they renewed the “contract” without our agreement multiple times and without our notice. No services were provided. The company threatened our credit if we did not pay in full. They harassed us on a daily basis. We paid the money under duress and they said we still had to go through a cancellation process. This cancellation required a “subscriber id” number they never provided. Protect America would keep us on the phone, talking to different people for hours, with no resolution. It took months to cancel this so-called contract. BUYERS BEWARE!!!

    What a piece of trash this company is! The equipment they send you looks like something from the 1980’s. On top of that, they clobber you a high monthly charge that they say is to cover the cost of their equipment. I contacted an alarm system wholesaler and the total cost of their equipment doesn’t surpass $300. They are thieves. Worst of all, they give you excuses and when you try to cancel, they want to penalize you and tell you you have to go through a bunch of steps to cancel. They just refuse to simply cancel your account. THIEVES!

    I went with this company today because it is cost effective.The agent told me of overnight delivery which i paid for but the FEDEX tracking stated Monday Feb 5th by 4:30p.m EST.
    I called back to inform and the customer service agent said it is not their fault because there is no Saturday delivery.
    Bad business just to get my money.Very disappointing for a new customer!!!.
