The Good

  • Multiple Package Options
  • State-of-the-art Technology
  • Customer Service
  • Secure Move
  • Safety Net

Multiple Package Options

Protection 1 offers a variety of packages to their customers: from basic home security which requires a landline phone to state-of-the-art home automation that utilizes a cellular signal that can be controlled from a mobile device. Protection 1 also has a new DIY system for those interested in self-installation. For complete package details see the ‘Equipment Review’ tab above.

State-of-the-art Technology

Protection 1 has been around for 27 years, but they have continued to evolve with modern technology. Their Smart control and video packages are all wireless making for easy, non-intrusive installation. They utilize a cell signal so customers don’t need to worry about an internet connection or having a landline phone. Protection 1 customers can access and view their home’s activities via a smartphone. This enables customers to view live video feed, track the armed status, lock and unlock doors, turn on and off lights, control the temperature of the home, etc.

Customer Service

Protection 1 sets themselves apart with their customer service. There are no automated phone systems, only real customer service representatives and their wait times are incredibly short. They claim to answer the phone within a few rings, which is remarkable compared to the wait times of some other companies. If readily accessible customer service and immediate communication are important to you, Protection 1 is worth contacting.

Secure Move

If a customer decides to move while in the middle of their protection 1 contract, Protection 1 will install a new or existing system to the new home for the customer, and pay $150 of the activation fee. The Secure Move feature really helps to set them apart in the industry, not many other companies in the industry offer a comparable service. For complete details about Secure Move, see the ‘Contract Details’ tab above.

Safety Net

If the customer suffers a loss due to their home being burglarized or damaged due to fire, Protection 1 will pay up to $1,000 of the home insurance deductible. This is a unique feature that not many other companies offer, and we have taken this into consideration when calculating our expert score. For complete details, see the ‘Contract  Details’ tab above.

The Bad

  • Several Additional Fees
  • Long Contract lengths
  • Base Security Model Requires a Landline Phone
Several Additional Fees

Protection 1’s main problem is that they require their customers to pay full-term for contracts even after cancellation. Customers do have 14 days after signing the agreement to cancel the contract, but they will still be charged a $79 re-stocking fee. Also, in their terms and agreements subsection Protection 1 states that additional equipment may need to be purchased, meaning that all of the advertised features may not be accessible without purchasing additional equipment. Their terms and agreements also state that the equipment will remain the property of protection 1, so even after the service contract the equipment belongs to the company. Prices may increase after the first 12 months of service as well.

Long Contract Lengths

Protection 1 has done a good job of keeping their monthly fees at reasonable prices. This is due in part to their 36-month minimum contracts. Keep in mind that if at any point a customer desires to leave the contract, the customer will need to pay off the remainder of the contract.

Base Security Model Requires a Landline Phone

Protection 1’s base security model, “Secure” starts at an affordable rate of $34.99/moth with a 36-month contract. However, the technology used requires the customer to have a landline phone in order to monitor the system. This technology is dated; not many have landline phones anymore and very few will have the desire to use the base system as a result. It also poses a security hazard
as the phone lines can be cut before the alarm is ever tripped.

The Bottom Line

Protection 1 offers packages to meet just about everyone’s needs; from basic home security to complete home automation with state of the art technology. Their prices range from $34.99-$54.99 with a 36-month minimum contract. Protection 1 has customer service representatives that are readily available, with no automated phone systems and very short wait times. If this is important to you, Protection 1 is worth considering. Protection 1 may require some additional fees; additional equipment may need to be purchased in order to perform all advertised features, and prices may increase after the first 12 months of service. Also, if customers desire to cancel their service they must pay off the remainder of the contract balance.

Stay away from Protection 1. After the high pressure phone sale, they don't honor the terms of their contract regarding cancellation, then will harass you to death! Phone people are pushy, unprofessional, don't do what they say, and don't seem to be able to get anything done. They charged me for "services" NEVER provided, even after having discussed my cancellation, prior to the 14 day period stated in the contract, and have continued to charge me for "services" for a year.... The prior system has been removed, so there is no way possible they can provide services. Now they are threatening me with collections action. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ALARM PROVIDER!!Read More

If service is of concern for you and you are a commercial business in the Atlanta Market avoid this company at all costs. They have mo interest in follow through or communication. After repeated attempts to get reaponse on install issues to multiple levels of management Inclusding their so called Executive Manager of Customer Care (Nicole) I have now reseved to simply make others aware of the oathetic service levels in particular Mark T. and his manager who has yet to return my phone calls. We oen a school and in the current climate you would think that they would approach out business with care and urgency. You will get neither from them. Stay Away!Read More

IWe have had this service for a few months now, still do not understand anything about it. Regret changing from ADT to your company. Do Not ubderstand how the box (on the wall) works, do not see a key pad. Do not have a clear understanding of your service. Seems as if we are paying our money to a ghost with no action/service in return.

Protection 1 does not itemize their billing, You cant tell what they are billing you for. They just send a bill stating you owe $2500. When asked for a detailed bill, (dates, times and reason) so you can compaire records it took us 3 years to finially get a final bill.
When called for service they could not repair system they just billed us for services calls and left us without security cameras for over 6 months and they billed us for time they came out and didn’t fix system…What a Horror.

We had to get another security company to come in to look at our system….Problem was a wrong coding that new vendor fixed in less than a hour and charged a reasonable fee for

Man am I glad I switched to Protection 1!! Your staff helped me understand not only the conversion from my current system, but worked with me to convert to a wireless Protection 1 system for a very discounted price! I love being able to monitor and control the system from my smart phone. But, your job is to protect me and my family so the important thing is how well do you respond if there is an intruder. Without hesitation, I can say you that this is where you excel. I literally measure your response in seconds where it would be minutes before I would get a call with the other company. I’m not sure how you do it but I am impressed with your monitoring system. Thank you Protection 1 for giving me and my family piece of mind knowing you guys are on the job!.

I have been with this company a long time. I started at $99 and now it is over $100. I do not think that you need to raise the cost every year or every other year. Nothing has changed for my protection. I do like what I have and will not change it. I will pay by check as my lawyer told me that that is the best way to know what has happened. Emails are fine. Thank you for your help when I have needed it.

I recently learned that Protection 1 merged with several other alarm companies including ADT.. I also have services with ADT and want to know when you will adjust my billing to reflect one company as I am now paying two companies for similar services (Alarm response). I must admit I prefer Protection 1 over ADT as ADT never calls when the alarm goes off. Protection calls within less than 1 minute. Excellent and Kudos to Protection 1 for alert and timely monitoring services.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE experience. First, they were never able to get my door lock to work properly, after I paid over 1k for the installation of my system. I signed up with ASG and almost immediately they were bought out by PRO1. Unfortunately I was unaware of this, and so I didn’t open protection 1 mail. They had apparently not received the credit card numbers as a part of the buyout, and so my automatic payments were not being processed. By the time I realized what was happening, they weren’t willing to work with me to get the issue resolved in any fair manner, and then when I didn’t agree to their demands, I was told they wouldn’t work with me at all anymore and was allowed only to talk to a third party collections agency with threats of damaging my credit. The system never worked properly, and was NEVER ARMED, but now they have taken my balance and added a $750 termination fee to my account and demanded immediate payment in full for performing absolutely no service, and I get nothing from them except lectures about budgeting and how even tho they lost the payment information, it was my responsibility to keep their money off to the side and honor my contract. I will NEVER pay them a DIME, simply out of principle. Come at me Jerks.

The number buttons on panel are small and I have to punch several times for it to take the code.

I spoke to a customer service rep about Dept Homeland Sec memo that recommends Window users unistall Quick Time since Apple does not plan to apply any updates or patches to their software. Since Pro One uses Quick Time install for the security cameras I asked what Pro One recommends. Pro One customer service rep said they are aware of DHS recommendations and are working on a fix. This was a few months ago and I have yet to hear back or see any notices from Pro One, about unistall Quick Time issue.

This company has the worst customer service EVER. I called a while back to find out if someone could come out to see why my cameras weren’t working. The agent on the phone told me that since I had mentioned I got a new internet provider, they would charge me the service fee. I explained to her the system they had was very complicated, and I even mentioned the last time a service tech had to come out to the house because of the same reason, it took them over 2 hours of back and forth on the phone before the problem was resolved. She then snapped at me, telling me it was their ‘policy’. I was even more upset when I called a few weeks later, with questions about how long I had left on my contract. When the rep on the phone demanded the know why I wanted this information, I couldn’t believe they were treating a paying customer like this! Then I found out I originally signed a 5 YEAR CONTRACT, and things made more sense. I was recently released from the hospital after being severely injured in Iraq when I signed this contract, and should have never entered into an agreement for this long. I explained this to her, and her nonchalant attitude was telling of just how much she cared. The second my contrac is up, I will be cancelling my service with Protection 1.

We have had our alarm for 19 years. It was Honeywell at that time. We always had awesome local customer service until Protection 1 took over. The customer service and management in Memphis are the worst. I have sent reviews more than once. I sent one in September 2014 and got a response from Mark Oldham expressing how concerned he was over my unhappiness. He called as promised and he made promises over the phone (my main reason for not doing phone calls). I have nothing but my word that he made those promises. I do my very best to be honest and I will tell anyone I say what I say in conversations. Unfortunately, that is not my experience with business conversations with customer service.

After my last review, I received an email from ********* *********. Her email shows she is with the Office of the CEO. We swapped emails for a while and she finally gave me a three month credit but that was not what I was looking for. I will pay for what I agreed to. I just want someone to listen and take action in Memphis. Ms. ********* told me several times that Memphis is a small market for Protection 1. I am under contract until September 2017. She said she was willing to a settlement for me to cancel my contract. At that time she said the cancellation fee was $750. She also did not know who Jay Hardy is/was. His business card and emails stated he was the General Manager of the Memphis office. He came to my home and we swapped several emails. He did nothing he said he would do and insulted my husband and I on the phone. After that, I never could get him to return my calls or emails. Ms. ********* said someone else was GM in Memphis and had been for years.

The customer service people in Kansas are always very nice but they don’t do anything either.

I worked in a customer oriented field for years. I was taught to listen to my customers and try my best to make them happy. I once worked for a company that IBM owned, one Saturday a technician had a very irate customer on the phone and didn’t know what to do. I took the call even though that was not my area. The customer’s laptop was lost and he needed it. I took all of his contact information along with his case number and promised I would find out what was going on. I contacted our Fedex rep for help to find the laptop. For some reason it was being held at a Fedex in another city. I called our courier service, had them get the laptop and drive it to the customer. I took the customer’s information home with me and stayed in constant contact with him. He got his property that night. Well..unfortunately it didn’t work. He sent a scathing letter to the CEO of IBM. Although he was very upset and wasn’t ever going to buy from IBM again, he took the time in that letter to recognize my efforts. He wrote wonderful things that ultimately got me an award. But it was never about recognition for me, it was about making that customer happy. My boss knew what I had done, but to us it was all in a day’s work. He thanked me for my efforts and that was the end for us. I can only hope that customer did buy from them again because I listened and did my best to rectify the problem. I’m sure to you this sounds like tooting my own horn, it really isn’t. It is just an idea that maybe your company, along with all companies need to understand that customers are tired of spending our hard earned money and getting talked to as if we are a bother. Try to walk the walk so to speak. I believe you are all forgetting that we do have other choices out there. Your alarm business is not the only game in town. I’m sure I am labeled a “problem customer “. I do my best to be nice because I know the customer service representatives can only do so much, but I am very unhappy with your company. I had a much better system before I supposedly upgraded. I lost keypads I had paid a lot of money for and the system does nothing special. I was clear in what I wanted. The sales person just had too much going on in his personal life and did not get his manager or another co-worker involved to make sure we were taken care of. By the time I finally got the GM to call, I wanted away from P1. He was worse than his sales person. He was aware the kid had personal issues and did nothing to step in. He lied more than his employee and was just as flaky.

If this review winds up back with Ms. *********, then I am just venting to myself, again. If not, and someone really does want to listen, please call or email. I would provide my information because Ms. ********* stated she couldn’t find an account for me with the information in my review(interesting because your records indicate I have been a customer since 2002) but I don’t want my personal information out there if this is publicly viewed.

I was notified the wireless communication for my alarm system needed a no charge upgrade to 4G coverage. The next day I was contacted by David the technician. He arrived and upgraded the system in just a few mins. In addition I had recently purchased an additional fob for my system. The instructions to add this to my system were way over my head. I asked David if it would be possible for him to install this for me. Without hesitation he agreed. Watching him work all those keys on the keypad was impressive. Within just a few minutes the new fob was working perfectly!

I am extremely disappointed in Protection 1 from a field support point of view. I have waited over 7 months to get a shock sensor ordered and installed in an addition I put on my house. I only had notification that the part was in (NOT installed) when I got a bill for it. The part was only ordered after I had made almost monthly calls to find out where the part was. Every time I called, the call center E-mailed the field office and promised that someone would be in touch with me the next day. NEVER happened. After finally talking to a call center supervisor I got an installation date scheduled and took the day off to be sure I would be there when the technician arrived. Apparently the part did not get on his truck that day. We had to reschedule the installation. It is scheduled for today, but I seriously doubt it will happen. I am done messing with Protection 1 and am starting to look for another provider that will treat me as an important customer even if I am over a 2 hour drive from the “local” office.

Often my alarm system is activated without a follow-up call from Protection 1. This concerns me as to whether my system is actually being monitored of which I pay. In the past your technicians have been dispatched to check my system as your monitoring agent doesn’t receive a signal. When the technician arrives and investigates they state the system is sending a signal. So why does the monitoring technician not see the alarm signal when the system is activated? Who is correct the service technician or the monitoring technician. In either case is my home being monitored to protect me and my family? If not, maybe I should seek other options.

About a year ago, I called and stated that the one minute delay on my alarm was too long and requested it be shortened to 30 seconds. The person on the phone agreed, but the change was never made. This sucks!

Another issue I have is the calls to my house when the alarm is triggered. Sometimes no call comes in. When I call to complain about it, I have been told “Well, if you disable the alarm immediately, we just figure it’s you and we assume there is no problem.” Years ago when I first got the service, the calls would come in immediately no matter how quickly I turned the alarm off. Who wants to stand there for 30 seconds with the alarm blaring! So, the bottom line is that your service has deteriorated over the years.

Another issue is that the people answering the phone could be anywhere on earth. I want someone in my city (Charlotte NC) answering my calls and responding to my alarm! If you don’t address these issues, I’ll be forced to find another alarm service.

First, I want to compliment the folks at Protection 1 for offering exceptional care and diligence. Unfortunately, we had a break-in less than a month after installing our system. We truly believe that if we had not had Protection1, we would have suffered greater losses. In our case, we lost a MacBook Pro and a broken window.
We were happy that Protection1’s guarantee/warranty includes a reimbursement of our deductible up to $1,000. Since our deductible is $1,000 we were reimbursed the entire amount. They were quick with the reimbursement check and didn’t try to get out of paying. We are incredibly happy with Protection1.

Since becoming my provider and taking over for the last company I have contacted you folks about upgrading my system. One phone call that I missed and no appointments, my old alarm sign has fallen apart and I went without monitoring (unknowingly) for two months. I was charged for those months and told it was my fault for not testing system monthly. So I put it on test but the operator wouldn’t stay on the line to confirm and said she would leave the system on test for a couple of hours. I never received a response on the test.

Having a local office to communicate with is important to me. Having said that, when the local office up and relocates and does nothing to contact me ,the customer to provide a new means of communication , is not acceptable. I only became aware when I tried to contact the local office t o refer a new customer. That is now a missed opportunity.

Customer service proved to be extremely poor at explaining why my bill suddenly changed? Why I was billed for only 10 days when I had been billed quarterly for nearly 15 years. Customer service could not answer and they said they could not transfer me to the section that generated the actual bill. I was put on hold while customer service talked to that section. After a long wait, I was told “the bill is correct”. But then the customer service person said she could not explain why the billing dept. is saying it is correct when clearly it is not the correct amount. So both I and the customer service person agreed the bill was strange but there was no one for me or the customer service person to talk to to get a clear answer. I asked if the monitoring price changing? The customer service person assured me no it was not. The attitude relayed from the billing section was “it is what it is. Take it or leave it.”. I am seriously thinking of leaving it. That attitude really makes me doubt this company even after using them for nearly 15 years. Several weeks later I received yet another partial bill and a letter stating the price is changing. This is after I asked if the price was changing and I was told no. The letter was dated two days before the price increase was scheduled to take affect. So of course, I would not received the letter telling of the pending price increase until after it actually took affect. I feel this is a bit deceptive. Certainly not good customer relations. I am not so sure they are capable of monitoring my alarm. If they cannot even control their billing dept. How can I rely upon them to watch over my home?

I am fine with the basic service, but when i am trying to find out about other products offered, i.e. like cameras, smoke detectors, your company wants me to call in. i don’t want to speak with someone just to gather some information. I was trying to get my parents to use your services but, they are older and don’t want to sit on the phone. So They are going to try another company, and I may join them.

Basically, I am very happy with your service. Instead of reviewing, I wish to make a suggestion. To keep me feeling secure, it’s good know that the system is working. I would appreciate a call every six months to test or confirm that all is working. This would also open the door to questions and concerns – communication always leads to positives, and you would prove that you care about me as a customer. Please consider this idea; I await your call.

The Security protection we receive from Protedtion1 is quite good. Through the intercom, we get alarms and the response is immediate and our problem is solved. We have had no other problems with the service and consider it a “good deal”.

    1. Battery Low notice often. How long does the battery last?
    2. Unable to alarm due to alert that window/door is open, when that window or door has not been touched.
I don’t like technicians to keep coming to the house because I don’t have enough time to deal with them. Also please don’t send that Tech who came the last 2 times to my house. Thank you.
    3. Door bell remote fails to answer the door most of the time.

I have cancelled my account with 1Ptrotection effective 27 may 2016. You are attempting to bill me for a service I did not receive. The electronic device has been removed effective date 27 May 2016. Please do not continue to HARASS me about this matter. I have a telephone copy of this cancellation. I do not owe you for a service I did not receive. Thank you Gary Lisenbee

I think P1s monitoring prices are too high….go compare P1’s monitoring prices with the others. I also do not like a two year contract. Again go compare. I will be gone from P1 after my contract expires.

Security company is way to slow the whole house would be gone by the time they get there.
almost an hour two weeks ago to get to my residence. I was 30 miles away and got there faster than they did. I reset the alarm and checked the whole property and went back to work before they showed up.

Have not heard anything about the switch from 2G upgrade on cell phone backup. At the end of the month (June), I plan on evaluating other systems and the upgrades they offer at no charge. I have taken Protection 1 off of auto payment so any switch would be easier. I paid enough for the initial installation and others offer equipment and upgrades to the system at little to no cost. Your product is adequate, but you have to work harder to retain us in a competitive market.

System at our South Lake Tahoe CA home has been a disaster. Ordered water sensor but they were never able to install. Have had nothing but problems with sensors. Had to eliminate one. Every month it fails system communication test. We receive a phone call informing us if this fact. System has been upgraded/modified at least twice. Service reps are very nice. Last visit they wanted to charge us $200 to replace unit that never worked! By increasing insurance charges, they replaced without charge. But as of yesterday’s phone call, it still does not work. My home system in a city does work. However, when company upgrades system, you have to pay for materials and service cost is increased.
