The Good

  • Multiple Package Options
  • State-of-the-art Technology
  • Customer Service
  • Secure Move
  • Safety Net

Multiple Package Options

Protection 1 offers a variety of packages to their customers: from basic home security which requires a landline phone to state-of-the-art home automation that utilizes a cellular signal that can be controlled from a mobile device. Protection 1 also has a new DIY system for those interested in self-installation. For complete package details see the ‘Equipment Review’ tab above.

State-of-the-art Technology

Protection 1 has been around for 27 years, but they have continued to evolve with modern technology. Their Smart control and video packages are all wireless making for easy, non-intrusive installation. They utilize a cell signal so customers don’t need to worry about an internet connection or having a landline phone. Protection 1 customers can access and view their home’s activities via a smartphone. This enables customers to view live video feed, track the armed status, lock and unlock doors, turn on and off lights, control the temperature of the home, etc.

Customer Service

Protection 1 sets themselves apart with their customer service. There are no automated phone systems, only real customer service representatives and their wait times are incredibly short. They claim to answer the phone within a few rings, which is remarkable compared to the wait times of some other companies. If readily accessible customer service and immediate communication are important to you, Protection 1 is worth contacting.

Secure Move

If a customer decides to move while in the middle of their protection 1 contract, Protection 1 will install a new or existing system to the new home for the customer, and pay $150 of the activation fee. The Secure Move feature really helps to set them apart in the industry, not many other companies in the industry offer a comparable service. For complete details about Secure Move, see the ‘Contract Details’ tab above.

Safety Net

If the customer suffers a loss due to their home being burglarized or damaged due to fire, Protection 1 will pay up to $1,000 of the home insurance deductible. This is a unique feature that not many other companies offer, and we have taken this into consideration when calculating our expert score. For complete details, see the ‘Contract  Details’ tab above.

The Bad

  • Several Additional Fees
  • Long Contract lengths
  • Base Security Model Requires a Landline Phone
Several Additional Fees

Protection 1’s main problem is that they require their customers to pay full-term for contracts even after cancellation. Customers do have 14 days after signing the agreement to cancel the contract, but they will still be charged a $79 re-stocking fee. Also, in their terms and agreements subsection Protection 1 states that additional equipment may need to be purchased, meaning that all of the advertised features may not be accessible without purchasing additional equipment. Their terms and agreements also state that the equipment will remain the property of protection 1, so even after the service contract the equipment belongs to the company. Prices may increase after the first 12 months of service as well.

Long Contract Lengths

Protection 1 has done a good job of keeping their monthly fees at reasonable prices. This is due in part to their 36-month minimum contracts. Keep in mind that if at any point a customer desires to leave the contract, the customer will need to pay off the remainder of the contract.

Base Security Model Requires a Landline Phone

Protection 1’s base security model, “Secure” starts at an affordable rate of $34.99/moth with a 36-month contract. However, the technology used requires the customer to have a landline phone in order to monitor the system. This technology is dated; not many have landline phones anymore and very few will have the desire to use the base system as a result. It also poses a security hazard
as the phone lines can be cut before the alarm is ever tripped.

The Bottom Line

Protection 1 offers packages to meet just about everyone’s needs; from basic home security to complete home automation with state of the art technology. Their prices range from $34.99-$54.99 with a 36-month minimum contract. Protection 1 has customer service representatives that are readily available, with no automated phone systems and very short wait times. If this is important to you, Protection 1 is worth considering. Protection 1 may require some additional fees; additional equipment may need to be purchased in order to perform all advertised features, and prices may increase after the first 12 months of service. Also, if customers desire to cancel their service they must pay off the remainder of the contract balance.

Stay away from Protection 1. After the high pressure phone sale, they don't honor the terms of their contract regarding cancellation, then will harass you to death! Phone people are pushy, unprofessional, don't do what they say, and don't seem to be able to get anything done. They charged me for "services" NEVER provided, even after having discussed my cancellation, prior to the 14 day period stated in the contract, and have continued to charge me for "services" for a year.... The prior system has been removed, so there is no way possible they can provide services. Now they are threatening me with collections action. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ALARM PROVIDER!!Read More

If service is of concern for you and you are a commercial business in the Atlanta Market avoid this company at all costs. They have mo interest in follow through or communication. After repeated attempts to get reaponse on install issues to multiple levels of management Inclusding their so called Executive Manager of Customer Care (Nicole) I have now reseved to simply make others aware of the oathetic service levels in particular Mark T. and his manager who has yet to return my phone calls. We oen a school and in the current climate you would think that they would approach out business with care and urgency. You will get neither from them. Stay Away!Read More

I have been trying to have my master code for the last few months and keep getting the run-around. My system is an older model and after several calls I was told that my battery is low and that I need to replace my battery before I can change my code and that they would have to send a technician which would cost >$100 plus the cost of the battery which could range from $25 – $40, they were unable to give me exact amount.

I’ve been a loyal customer for around 15 years and never expected that a simple master code change could be made so difficult.

Possibly it’s about time to shop around and/or listen to some of the offers from other carriers.

installers are wonderful and knowledgeable but the sales and customer service are another story. Appointments being cancelled without any notice, being pushed into upgrades, being pushed into sighing contracts that are impossibly long and extremely small font to read online, cannot be printed off to view until signed.

We have had your services for 25 years and it gets more expensive and the service is worse. Another thing is not having any service techs available in off hours, everyone in this world has to work these days and most often 8-5 M-F and that is the only hours you have available for service forcing people to lose money by taking time off to sit and wait. Then the service person cancels and you’ve lost wages for nothing. We, the customer, are your lifeline. You need to change with the times and accommodate us.

We are now in our upper 60’s and could use a larger print keypad but of course, nothing is free and I think we pay you enough for what we have. Once again, should accommodate your long term customers more.

Have been a customer since 2004. Overall, have been very satisfied w/the system & service. I have one suggestion. About the only time I receive a communication is the monthly e-mail newsletter or warnings re: possible scams, all of which I appreciate receiving, or when there is a price increase. It would be helpful if there was someway customers who have remote battery sensors could be notified when it is time to schedule a service call for battery changes and to check the main panel and any cellular back-ups. We have no way of knowing when these things should occur until something pops up on the alarm pads. The last time this happened, we were on our way to Alaska the next day! Just a suggestion.

Made an appt to discuss options for security cameras as I have been a P1 customer for years and have rcvd offers from AT&T and ADT after setting time aside to meet with rep, which was useless I was advised that there weren’t any options available other than to spend $2,500. To purchase cameras and have them installed. I cannot believe that this could not be communicated via telecon what a waste of time!!! And am concerned that is other security/alarm companies can offer reasonable packages that include camera why doesn’t P1have these?

I have been a customer for several years. I also had a system installed at my daughter’s home in another state. She has had all positive experiences as well. She recently moved into another home and service was excellent. I have always had a positive experience with Protection 1 whether calling for support and or service. The warranty has been accurate with no surprises. Customer service is always professional. Billing is very easy on line.

I was interested in getting a key fob for remote access to turn on and off my alarm system since the Protection 1 app is not compatible with my cell phone (Windows Phone). I started on the online chat service and was transferred to two different phone operators afterward. My only question was how much it would cost to add a key fob to my existing system. I feel that should be an easy add on–look up my system, see if a key fob option exists, and give me the price. Yet no one could give me a price without a heavy sales pitch to run me through all the items I should consider as add ons. I was very turned off by the call and still never got a quote for what adding a simple key fob would cost. I ended up not adding anything and questioning whether I still want to be a Protection 1 client if every time I call for a simple add on I’ll be put through the paces. I felt like I was being sized up to see if there were more ways they could get money out of me rather than service me as an existing client.

I had to contact customer service for clarification on billing. I never really did receive a decent answer to my questions regarding auto-pay and why Protection 1 didn’t charge for a month of service even after auto-pay was set up. Due to that they had their collections department harass me with phone calls everyday, wanting my password to my account and not being helpful at all. I also inquired why I never received notice that my monthly bill went up without prior notification and never received an answer, at all. Maybe it is time to look at a competitor? Yet, to be fair, the equipment, monitoring and maintenance have been excellent.

Protection1 consistently delivered very poor service, so that we finally cancelled our contract and began service with another company. We had misread our contract and ended up owing hundreds of dollars on the Protection1 contract. We called to try to close this out, and they promised to send us a final bill. Instead they kept sending us monthly alarm bills, despite us continuing to call them for resolution, at which they told us not to pay those bills, but then we were billed additional late charges. They finally told us we were resolved and sent us a bill clearly marked “Final Bill”, but then we still received monthly alarm bills and late fees. After more calls, they said that they had researched our contract and that we still owed hundreds of dollars, saying that we had signed a later contract than the original one. We don’t have any other contract agreement and asked them to send us a copy, which we have never received. We finally paid an agreed final sum on one of our calls to their billing department, but then about a week later, we received a huge bill. Upon calling their billing department today, we were told that the bill should never have been sent to us, and that in fact, we have a credit on our account. We have made at least a dozen calls to close out this account and paid them hundreds of dollars, and still it does not seem to be over. DO NOT EVER SIGN ANY CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY! Customer service is completely non-existent here, and their billing department has NO IDEA what they are doing. UNETHICAL COMPANY!

Our fire alarm installed by Protection 1 had gone off. There was no smoke in the house, the stove and oven were off, there was nothing to my knowledge to set it off. The wall alarm installed by Protection 1 had gone off almost immediately after, due to the fire alarm going off. The company called and kept telling us to hit the disarm button on the wall alarm and put in the password. We did. It would stop for a few seconds, then go off again, even though it read it was disarmed. The fire alarm continued to go off, the disarm did nothing to prevent that. They repeatedly told us to do it again and again and again, with obviously, the same results each time.
I had called from another phone to speak with someone else. She told me the same thing the other dispatcher was telling us to do, and of course, it did not work. I was told if I wanted a technician to come out, it would cost $190 per half hour since it was a weekend. I asked to speak with a manager. I was put on the phone with “R”. “R” knew as much as the dispatcher. She told me to do the disarm again and again and again. She then told me no one could come out unless I paid the $190 for the “emergency service”. She told me to unscrew the back up battery thing from the outlet. I did eventually get that out of the wall. She told me to unscrew the wall alarm, but she did not know if it had a screw or not, a technician would need to come out to see that if I did not do it myself, but I would still have to pay $190. I asked her if this happens to other people, and she said YES it does. This is not a one time thing. I was never able to unscrew the wall alarm, I could not find a screwdriver small enough for the screw they had put in. I accidentally hung up on “R”, but I was clearly getting no help anyways.
The wall alarm had shut down after about half an hour, I don’t know if the battery finally ran out without the back up in the outlet or what, but it stopped. The fire alarm kept going off, however. It is on the ceiling, where I can not reach. There was a button to silence it, which I could reach by holding a broom up to it, but I had to keep doing that every few minutes, or it would go off again. I called back, asking to speak with a different supervisor other than “R”. One was found, I did not catch her name. She was not rude, but she still did not give me options other than “get a ladder” or “pay the fee” for the technician to come out. I told her I did not want to stand in the middle of the hallway holding a broom to the ceiling to quiet the alarm all weekend (it was SATURDAY) until someone could come out on Monday, and I was not going to pay $190/half hour for something that is the fault of the company and something that they should be handling. I asked if they had any type of plan in place for this thing, and she said no other than charging their customers for “emergency services” on the weekends.
The company refused to help me without charging me, and they refused to cancel our service as it was a weekend. This happens to other people, I am not the first person this has happened to, yet they have no plan in place for this thing other than charging their customers to have a technician come out on the weekend for what they call an “emergency”. This is the biggest problem so far. I have had problems in the past, such as the sensors falling off of doors and windows, causing the alarm to go off until the system was disabled, which we were charged for them to come and put them back up as well, even though they used a weak adhesive to put them on in the first place.

Friends had ADT customer service was real bad so they switched to Protection One. Sold us on it. Great up front sale and installation from Protection One. Continued for 3 years of great service, alarm goes off my cell phone rings within 10 seconds (old system.)
When contract was going out I called and told them I wanted a discount to renew for a year.
They gave me a 12 month contract for $5 less. Again 100% outstanding service.
Following year so many companies showing off all their new smart phone apps./features, Time War., AT&T, etc. I wanted something new.
Called Protection One told them I wanted new base system with new smartphone application ended up with next day install, new base unit, garage door sensors, Thermostat unit. For a few dollars more a month for 24 months I’m very Happy customer. Alarm goes off, get a call in my house using new wall unit speaker asking me if everything is ok within 3 seconds?
Outstanding all the way!!! (Minus 1 point like to see $39 a month for price)

It is very difficult to change alarm companies and once you are locked into a contract even more so. I was with Protection 1 for several years and finally cancelled just recently when my contract ran out. I feel so relieved not to have to deal with the awful company anymore. The system was constantly having issues, a battery would die, I would get error messages, a component would not work or it would stop communicating with the cellular service. All of these issues took multiple multiple visits by a technician. They will only give a 5 hour service window on a weekday which meant I had to take a lot of time off work for my alarm system to be fixed. Not acceptable.
When the technicians would come out to the house, they never had a clue what was wrong or how to fix it. They would talk on the phone to Honeywell the whole time and then end up telling me something like they didn’t have the right part, or that they fixed it when they didn’t, meaning another visit. Calls to complain about this usually ended up in shouting matches with their rude customer service people. One once told me he thought it was ridiculous my boss wouldn’t let me take time off to have my alarm fixed – over and over. Another yelled at me for wanting a camera shipped to my house instead of having to be home for someone to hand deliver it. It wasn’t “company policy”.
When my alarm did go off, they couldn’t reach me so instead of calling the police they called my daughter and asked her opinion if she thought they should call the police. Outrageous! What was I paying them for? Someone tried to break into my house and no police ever showed up – ever. They said they called them but I don’t think they did. Complete waste of money as far as I’m concerned if they are going to monitor your house for you to just be killed by an intruder. Maybe they’d like my grandmother’s number so they can ask her opinion next time if they should call the police.
I asked numerous times to have the fire alarms installed as they would be monitored. The technicians always told me I didn’t want that or just plain no. They must be hard to install or something. I finally bought Nest alarms and I can monitor them myself.
I will be putting in a new system where I do not have to deal with people and honestly I think I will be safer.

We have had good service from Protection One during our 13 years with them. However, we recently decided to go with another company for personal reasons. When we called to notify them, it was very uncomfortable. The woman made unfavorable comments about our new carrier, acted like we didn’t know what we were doing, and, in general, was very unprofessional. Her behavior alone would prevent us from ever returning to Protection One.

My company was with Protection 1 for 6 years. Not one time did anyone ever come out to do service. When we started having problems with the alarm, still no one came out. Then when we had enough and switched services, we received two more bills AFTER THAT DATE. Do not waste your time or your trust with these people. Especially avoid Melissa, Eric, and Rick in the customer service department.

P.S. When Protection 1 sent their technician to pick up the equipment that was here (the only time they came here since the installation), the P1 Tech complemented us on the new panel we had had installed by their competition.

Had Protection 1 in previous home and worked fine. Moved to a new home in2014 and went with protection 1 again. We have had constant problems with different spots going on and off line over and over. Put new batteries in and had service come out. They put an antennae on the one sensor to help, but still going on and off line. When I went into the menu it says the receptions are “weak”. I will be calling service out again.

Protection 1 acquired my previous security company. They contacted me in December and told them I did not want to renew. In February, I received a bill for 3 months service. Apparently, they were still trying to charge me but did not get the correct card number in conversion. Told me a long story about how to properly cancel service, which required verification in writing, and that I had to pay anyway or else. However, when I agreed to pay the bill, they instantly agreed to cancel the service without all of the verification that I was told was required. Sounded a lot like a scheme. When I told them I was already switching to someone else, they started bad mouthing that company as being unprofessional. Protection 1 would certainly know about being unprofessional.

Protection 1 just acquired my current security company. I have been with Protection 1 for about two months now and I just had a security breach (on their part). Someone was able to call my account and gain access to information without using the verbal pass code. They did not even realize they were not talking to the account owner (myself) at the time. I called Protection 1 about it and they were scrambling for answers at first. Then they listed to the call and admitted that their employee did not request my verbal pass code and that they would make a note of this on my account. This is all that they said they would do to fix the situation. They apologized, but then their stance quickly changed when they realized that they were wrong but that I was not okay with them simply putting a note on my account. This is unbelievable! Essentially anyone with my phone number could have access my account. I am in the process of talking to their management about this, but I do not intend to continue my service with them. This is pretty scary!

Great setup, equipment and service. Every time alarm went off I was notified within 15 seconds.
Ended my 3rd year on the contract ask them what they could do for me they lower my bill $5 every month for a 1 year contract. During my 4th year all my batteries starting going out so called cust svc, they told me to buy 3v batteries at the Lowes store to save money.
Replace all my batteries good to go.
I only gave them an 8 because 3yr contract is tough plus they will charge you a lot of money to get anything new or upgraded.
if you want to keep me for life you have to give me something every 3 to 5 years otherwise I just jump ship for the next new thing that installs for free:)

The service is not good, their technicians are not very knowledgeable, Don’t give them your credit card number, they’ll keep it, they charged me two time for my yearly monitoring, it took a month to solve the problem. I had to change credit card number so they wouldn’t have it on file. I pay my monitoring by the year. I’ve been with them a long time, they started out good, but things changed.
If you want service, be prepared to wait many hours.

They are below average with the way they conduct business. If you have a problem you need to immediately ask for a supervisor because their standard customer service reps have no power to help.

What they did not tell us was that their motion detection cameras only record a limited amount of clips. The call them “uploads” meaning they upload to the cloud server where they are stored. You start with 1000 uploads and they charge more for additional uploads or your camera stops working. We went though hell because we were told these cameras would record 24/7 with no limits on storage.

Overall it took a few hours and multiple calls later, but we did get them to give us 15,000 uploads per month for no additional cost. I would say that they need to restructure their sales department and give their customer service reps more room to actually help customers rather than piss them off. I would not recommend Protection 1.

I cannot say enough about this company. My husband signed up with them when they were Westinghouse. Stayed with them when they turned into Protection 1. Have lost count of the # of years we have been with them. Husband has passed and I am still with them. The agents are wonderful night or day. Would never give them up. They are the best. Would say give up the ones you are with and come to Protection 1. Love them and their people.

I purchased the system in Houston TX and had AWESOME results. Great customer service, great technician, nothing but the best. 1 year later I moved to Raleigh NC (still under original contract) and the experience has been TERRIBLE. Installation tech shorted out the hvac system and didn’t know how to reset. ProtOne paid to have a hvac guy come out to reset..2 days later and under supervision of a contractor we hired. Missed appointments for problems relating to garage door operation, etc. A bunch of apologies and excuses but I’m still stuck with a $900 bill for an upgrade that is half hearted installed and I rarely even use the system anymore…don’t want to re-open pandora’s box. Not sure why there is such a difference between the various dealers/regions, but do your homework locally before signing on…they went from hero to zero with us pretty quickly.

Stay very, very, very far away from this company. They increased my monthly fee over and over again during the years I dealt with them and then refused to refund an automatic payment that went though after I had cancelled their service.

Worst service ever! Internal communication is the worst. They never get my messages right. When we set up appointments, they either no-show or they keep rescheduling because they are short staffed…(when did that become my problem?) We are definitely going to look for another security service for our business. However, based on the other reviews I have a feeling its going to be a battle to get out of our contract. I would NEVER recommend this company.

The salesman lied to us. When I called to cancel my contract after we had paid as promised they continue to take payment and when I called customer service they said another department would get back to me. I’ve sent several emails and even wrote letters I still have not heard back. I’ve been battling with them for 10 months now. Horrible company to deal with. Do not use them.

Had Protection 1 ever since they purchased Eagle Sentry in Las Vegas, Nevada. To monitor a house is a no brainer but if there is a problem, sending a reputable security company makes all the difference. When I had an alarm go off on a Saturday, monitoring called from Kansas (that is where Protection 1 monitors Las Vegas from on weekends, and I was told that security would be dispatched since I was not home. NO ONE ever showed up but when the security company was called, they said they could not check the rear of the property because a lock was on the gate. Problem was the THERE WAS NO LOCK ON THE GATE.and no report was ever left by the front door. Protection 1 stood by the security company and the story they told. The same thing happened at my business. An alarm went off and security responded in over an hour later. When I questioned the person that arrived they said they were on another alarm. The area the one person covered was E. Las Vegas and Henderson. an area that 8-10 security people should cover. My last issue was my new house where I wanted an outside camera (that worked) installed. Eight months later it is still not working and now I was just sent a registered letter cancelling my accounts. Nice way to push their problem under the table. Just get rid of the client and the problem and try and resolve it. The contract was terminated by a customer service rep. It never got to the Office of the CEO even though I was told that they worked for the Office of the CEO. When I called the person who cancelled the contract, the department that answered was ‘Customer Service’. I was also told that they would waive the 44 and 52 month contract even thought I never signed a ‘term’ contract. Goes to show how much they really know about what the field does to make sales and service your account. I would never recommend Protection 1 to anyone unless you can have a direct line to a person high then customer service.if you have issues.

On July 7, I posted a negative review for Protect One. Spencer of the
Marketing Manager started to contacted us by making an appointment with me thru email, saying that one of their technicians would come to my home to learn our needs. On the day of the appointment, my wife and I asked for leave for the whole day from our work and waited for the technician. It turned out they lied to us again – the technician never appeared in my home on that day or any other days later. Protect one stopped communicating with us too. No sorry, no emails. BUYER BEWARE, the company failed to keep its promise. They lie all the time, from the time before and after we signed their contract. All they want is to get you sign their contract and have you become their ATM machine.

We have had our system a little over a year and have had a few technical problems with them that we over looked. At the time of signing up with them we signed paper work for a 24 month agreement with an option to end at any time. Well today i call to cancel because we are moving this week and they gave me a run around and said that after a year it turns into a 58 month agreement and that they have my husbands signature electronically. We never signed electronically. and the sales man said he would email us the paper work once he scanned it into his computer and that never happened so i don’t have copies of the paper work. So they wanted to charge us 2500 dollars to end our contract. It took me arguing and fighting to get it down to 750 dollars but still it is not what we signed up for or what we were told. I have done some research and apparently this is happening often with them since around the time we signed up with them. I will never give them my business again

I concur with many of the negative reviews posted here — Protection One is awful — service, billing, customer support. Hours spent trying to get them to fix issues on our account to no avail. As soon as our contract is finished, we’ll quickly move our business to a company who knows what they’re doing, appreciates our business, and treats customers fairly and professionally.

DO NOT …. DO NOT … DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Customer service has been terrible. I have had this service (if you can even call it service) for a month, I have already had 3 technicians come out and issue has not been fixed. First technician happened to “miss my appointment” currently waiting for a fourth technician to come. Alarm keeps beeping due to faulty sensors. Whenever you open a certain door or window the keypad tells us a total different name for that sensor. We may be opening a window upstairs and it says that the front door has been open. Sales representative lied to us about certain terms in our contract too. When you call for customer support you get routed to 3 or 5 different people all saying that they are verifying information. BULL!!!!!!!!!!! Worst mistake of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had their service for about one year. Yes, you have to sign a contract for 3 years; yes the sales rep is not honest; the installation technicians lie. What can you do after the contract is signed? We had a breakin a few days ago. The alarm sent us a message. We called the company and told them to call 911. They did, not the correct police department. We had to tell them the correct police department to call. This definitely delayed the time for the police department to response. My experience is, you waste your money by having a company that is not response for its services. All they care is the $$ you pay them on a monthly basis.

company salesman was not honest when setting up account. later when I lost my job I called to say I needed to turn it off I was told I would have to pay a termination fee. the salesman told us this would not be so. They agreed to only take out half of our bill, yet every month took out the full bill. I had to call several times each month to have them correct it. not a trustworthy company at all. I will not recommend them to anyone I know, quite the opposite.
