The Good

  • Multiple Package Options
  • State-of-the-art Technology
  • Customer Service
  • Secure Move
  • Safety Net

Multiple Package Options

Protection 1 offers a variety of packages to their customers: from basic home security which requires a landline phone to state-of-the-art home automation that utilizes a cellular signal that can be controlled from a mobile device. Protection 1 also has a new DIY system for those interested in self-installation. For complete package details see the ‘Equipment Review’ tab above.

State-of-the-art Technology

Protection 1 has been around for 27 years, but they have continued to evolve with modern technology. Their Smart control and video packages are all wireless making for easy, non-intrusive installation. They utilize a cell signal so customers don’t need to worry about an internet connection or having a landline phone. Protection 1 customers can access and view their home’s activities via a smartphone. This enables customers to view live video feed, track the armed status, lock and unlock doors, turn on and off lights, control the temperature of the home, etc.

Customer Service

Protection 1 sets themselves apart with their customer service. There are no automated phone systems, only real customer service representatives and their wait times are incredibly short. They claim to answer the phone within a few rings, which is remarkable compared to the wait times of some other companies. If readily accessible customer service and immediate communication are important to you, Protection 1 is worth contacting.

Secure Move

If a customer decides to move while in the middle of their protection 1 contract, Protection 1 will install a new or existing system to the new home for the customer, and pay $150 of the activation fee. The Secure Move feature really helps to set them apart in the industry, not many other companies in the industry offer a comparable service. For complete details about Secure Move, see the ‘Contract Details’ tab above.

Safety Net

If the customer suffers a loss due to their home being burglarized or damaged due to fire, Protection 1 will pay up to $1,000 of the home insurance deductible. This is a unique feature that not many other companies offer, and we have taken this into consideration when calculating our expert score. For complete details, see the ‘Contract  Details’ tab above.

The Bad

  • Several Additional Fees
  • Long Contract lengths
  • Base Security Model Requires a Landline Phone
Several Additional Fees

Protection 1’s main problem is that they require their customers to pay full-term for contracts even after cancellation. Customers do have 14 days after signing the agreement to cancel the contract, but they will still be charged a $79 re-stocking fee. Also, in their terms and agreements subsection Protection 1 states that additional equipment may need to be purchased, meaning that all of the advertised features may not be accessible without purchasing additional equipment. Their terms and agreements also state that the equipment will remain the property of protection 1, so even after the service contract the equipment belongs to the company. Prices may increase after the first 12 months of service as well.

Long Contract Lengths

Protection 1 has done a good job of keeping their monthly fees at reasonable prices. This is due in part to their 36-month minimum contracts. Keep in mind that if at any point a customer desires to leave the contract, the customer will need to pay off the remainder of the contract.

Base Security Model Requires a Landline Phone

Protection 1’s base security model, “Secure” starts at an affordable rate of $34.99/moth with a 36-month contract. However, the technology used requires the customer to have a landline phone in order to monitor the system. This technology is dated; not many have landline phones anymore and very few will have the desire to use the base system as a result. It also poses a security hazard
as the phone lines can be cut before the alarm is ever tripped.

The Bottom Line

Protection 1 offers packages to meet just about everyone’s needs; from basic home security to complete home automation with state of the art technology. Their prices range from $34.99-$54.99 with a 36-month minimum contract. Protection 1 has customer service representatives that are readily available, with no automated phone systems and very short wait times. If this is important to you, Protection 1 is worth considering. Protection 1 may require some additional fees; additional equipment may need to be purchased in order to perform all advertised features, and prices may increase after the first 12 months of service. Also, if customers desire to cancel their service they must pay off the remainder of the contract balance.

Stay away from Protection 1. After the high pressure phone sale, they don't honor the terms of their contract regarding cancellation, then will harass you to death! Phone people are pushy, unprofessional, don't do what they say, and don't seem to be able to get anything done. They charged me for "services" NEVER provided, even after having discussed my cancellation, prior to the 14 day period stated in the contract, and have continued to charge me for "services" for a year.... The prior system has been removed, so there is no way possible they can provide services. Now they are threatening me with collections action. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ALARM PROVIDER!!Read More

If service is of concern for you and you are a commercial business in the Atlanta Market avoid this company at all costs. They have mo interest in follow through or communication. After repeated attempts to get reaponse on install issues to multiple levels of management Inclusding their so called Executive Manager of Customer Care (Nicole) I have now reseved to simply make others aware of the oathetic service levels in particular Mark T. and his manager who has yet to return my phone calls. We oen a school and in the current climate you would think that they would approach out business with care and urgency. You will get neither from them. Stay Away!Read More

Have been a customer a long time before I started working here 7 years ago. For 7 years this company has been problematic. with record keeping, accuracy, and billing. We have 5 systems and each one brought it’s own baggage. Expect to update P1 with changes I have made to the keypad, and find other problems. Most recent: Reviewed all 5 systems on 5/27/15, corrected their inaccuracies. Called today 6-1 to update a user I input from my panel and lo and behold… their records were WRONG. Their excuse: We just upgraded to a new system… Sounds like an internal problem to me… Reviewed another of our systems (to ensure accuracy) and it did not match my 5/27 corrections. From beginning to end.. the sales rep, the accuracy of their records, everyone not on the same page leaves much to be to be desired. Hoping to end this relationship soon.

    BEWARE of PROTECTION1

My contract expired in January of 2015. Despite speaking with a rep in December 2014 about contract non-renewal and sending a letter via snail mail, Protection1 claims they have no record of anything. So my credit card was charged for the month of Jan., Feb., and March of this year. three months of service. This morning I got on the phone with a rep who kept me on the phone for half an hour making it very difficult to solve the problem. She was very pushy and aggressive. Scare tactics do not sit well with me, either
The company is not appreciative of its customers. My alarm system bill was always paid on time, actually, ahead of time. That was not taken into consideration as I was trying to get a quote for the new house I was planning on moving in. The quote was outrageously high and when I attempted to negotiate the rate, the rep was very rude. That is when I began seeing the true colors of what Protection1 is about.

As to the Protection1 equipment, it was average – ongoing problems with the door contacts, falling off or not making contacts, then I was told it was my responsibility to maintain those contacts.

I am posting this review to caution you. Prior to the expiration of your contract, make sure you put everything in writing and insist on having your reply in writing. Send a registered mail. My friend usually cancels her credit cards when dealing with shady companies, I should have listened to her.

There are numerous companies now where you do not need to sign a three-year contract and pay ahead of the service delivered to you – do your research and you will save money and avoid difficulties such as the one I am facing now.

I did not understand why this company can get A+ review. I had very bad experience with this company. I rented an office space to have a business one year ago with one year lease, and I was contacted by protect one sales to install the security. I was told the system was easily installed by DIY. But after I received the system and i cannot make it work (BTW, I have a doctor degree in Engineering, i think that I am not that stupid). The technical support also did not provide any good advice. Now my lease is expired, and I called the customer service to stop the service after I paid one year’s fee without the system “ON”. I was told that the agreement is for 3 years, I need to pay additional 2 years’ fee no matter that I can use the system or not. I do not think that the sale agent specially mentioned that the agreement is 3 years, since my lease for the office space is one year, why I sign an agreement for 3 years’ commitment, but I was told that I must pay all 3 years fee and no matter what happened.

I have no Idea how this company gets an A+! I have had their service for over 5 years and it has been a nightmare. First off, I have the Cell phone tower back up for my system that never works, Secondly my system continuously has faults that I call them to clear and as soon as they clear it it “beeps” again. and finally when I tried to cancel the service they told me I had to submit a written request (which I did) and when the contract expired they would end my service (which they Have not done) I have reported them to the BBB twice for resolution. They did however, just recently agree to end my contract if I get another letter to them which I have and no response yet. Please stay away from them! By the way their customer service sucks!

I have had Protection1 since 2008 and have not had any problem at all!
For the people that have had problems with the equipment that is your own fault because protection1 tells you to test your alarm every 30 days, if you fail to do so it isn’t their fault if something isn’t working it is yours for being too lazy to test it.

This company has stopped monitoring my house for over a year. They have not been getting the signal for all this time; however, I was never notified about it. What type of service is that one? Unacceptable. I learned about it while I was conducting a test. I don’t understand how it could be rated A+ by BBB

Chose Protection One because of a friend and originally didn’t sign a contract. However, after the install I was told he forgot to have the contract signed and would get in trouble otherwise. I was hesitant about signing but he assured me I could get out of it whenever needed. Was told it was primarily a formality.
BOY WAS HE WRONG!!! two years later tried to get out of it due to the fact I found out how much I was paying compared to other national services but was told I could not get out of it.
The part I don’t understand is Why would a service provider want to ruin their reputation by forcing customers to keep their contract when they know you aren’t happy. Why would they want their name associated with a unhappy client?
FOR THIS REASON I would not recommend Protection 1. They do not care about the customer, their only concern is about the $.

I carry insurance but when I needed it, I was told my insurance didn’t cover a tech coming to reinstall a window alarm when new window was put in. I had called in September and made an appointment. Was told someone would be here between 12 and 4:30 –they didn’t come. My daughters had to remove the monitor from the dining room sliding door. $115 per trip and $25.00 per 15 minutes is ridiculous.
I won’t change firms for a number of reasons.
They are not 100% honest so don’t trust them either.

We have recently switched to Protection 1 after being with another company for many years. Our technician was very informed with the new system and took time to explain everything to us. He checked all aspects of the new system to be sure we were protected. I felt very comfortable having him in our home. He was very professional, polite and made the whole experience very pleasant. He went the extra mile to fix issues caused by the previous security company.

We used Protection 1 for a new building we were constructing. We agreed to pay for the installation and 1st month monitoring as the General Contractor. A year later we are still getting invoices for work beyond our agreement and then a threatening letter to pay or else. months of calling and emailing my local contact for assistance to no avail! Doesn’t return calls and passes emails off to someone “Pam” who does not respond either. Good Luck with this company. We will never use them again!!

We changed our provider primarily to upgrade our system and receive additional systems: CO2 sensor,
dog motion sensor and a cellular key pad. Installation turned out to be a problem with an older system but those problems were solved and the overall system seems to be functioning properly. Protection One installer had some problems but sought out another tech who knew how to overcome the antiquated system. Both were courteous and helpful.

Do yourself a favor and pick someone else for your security needs. We got excellent service from them…25 years ago. Since getting them in the new house in July ’12, not so much. Within 18 months, there was a system failure. First we were mislead by a CS rep on the phone. ‘Oh, it looks like your batteries failed, you’ll need to replace them.’, So off to the battery store we went. $30 worth of batteries and 24 hours later, same system failure. The CS rep that time said we would need someone to come out to look at it. So we did. Repair guy came out, said something about the motherboard (the thing in the closet) having gone out, a problem he had never seen before, changed it and changed out the keypad (uh huh, more about that in a minute), said he wouldn’t bill for labor and left, taking the supposedly defective parts with him. A month later, we start getting billed for $300 by Protection 1. When I called to ask WTH?, I was told by a CS rep that the charge was for the keypad, which is ALWAYS changed out when there is a service call. So, we have a repair guy saying the problem was one he’d never seen before, and a CS rep telling me that they are charging me for a part they always replace no matter what the actual problem was. Do we see a conflict of interest and in stories here? It’s a scam, and I told them that. I should have known the minute they tried to sell us an MA (maintenance agreement) during installation that the real Protection 1 was long gone, and they were now just another rip off company. As soon as our initial contract is up, they can pick up their lousy system at the curb.

I ordered a security system with cameras from them. Tech was 2 hours late getting here with no apology or explanation. Took 3 hours and he didn’t even install the cameras, was told they needed to be programmed and he would be back the next day Tuesday. Tuesday came and went Wednesday came and went with no word from them. Finally on Thursday I was able to get ahold of them to be told they would be here Friday at 11, again 4 hours late. After an hour tech finally tells me he can’t install the cameras because of the internet I had! Really? He knew that on Monday when he came out. So after a week of being jerked around over the cameras I called to cancel them, was told I had a contract and it would cost $1800 to break. Told them I wasn’t paying that and I would contact my lawyer as well as the BBB. Was let out of contract but was now being charged $180 for one week service which I wouldn’t have had had the tech told me upfront about the cameras!! Sales people are terrible, customer service is terrible! Went with ADT, no hassle and they installed all the equipment in one trip.

I transferred my service from ADT because I was not very happy. Protection 1 was very professional and avoided the hard sell. They just gave me what I asked for and great service. To be transparent, I am an employee at Protection 1. But what I can tell you is from the inside, the company puts the customer first and you feel it in the delivery of the service. Great products – similar to what you can get on the market from other companies, but service that STANDS OUT. Live person answers whenever we call in – no call tree to navigate. People on the phone that genuiely care about you as a customer and excellent service techs. I have had my service for nearly 4 years and wanted to share my review. There is a reason why Protection 1 has the highest customer retention in the security industry!

Great company and great product. Most security companies sell similar products/features. The biggest factor in choosing a security company (for me) is the service. Live (U.S based) person answers the phone every time I call and same day service if there is an issue. Can’t get that anywhere else!

We had a very hard time canceling our services even though we had satisfied our contract. We were very displeased with their service due to slow response.

One thing we found odd was that no mention had been made of the $1,000 deductible until we decided to cancel even though this was our second burglary. I suppose it was our fault for not reviewing the contract more carefully.

I do not trust them and would not recommend them to anyone.

We have been loyal customers for 19 years. After deciding to upgrade our system with current technology & remote accessing capability, we contacted them & signed an agreement to have them install the upgraded equipment including a Honeywell touch screen, video cameras, & keyless entry.
On October 8, 2013 they installed the basic system, but did not complete camera or keyless door lock. Their technician took our 3 key fobs for repair.
They have never returned to finish the installation.
After more than 20 calls to their center in Wichita, I am just about ready to seek another security system from a different provider.

Have had multiple false alarm issues with the Protection1 system. I’ve had to provide my key and pass code to neighbors to come in my house while I’m gone and have them shut the system down. Have had a Protection1 service inspect and give the okay everything is good, but system continues to malfunction. Also had a main battery issue which the system was down for a week waiting for the battery to arrive. Be prepared to install it yourself and dispose of the old hazardous battery.

I called Protection1 to cancel after over 5 years of service and was talked down to, to try to pressure me to stay with them. I refused to continue with their service and was then told that although I’m canceling my service affective today 10/31/2013 I will not be reimbursed for my prepayment of November and December. Also, cancelling over the phone is not acceptable to them. They require an email cancelation request and if not received within 7 days they will continue to bill you and take you to a collection agency if you don’t pay up. Protection1 is stealing from me for 2 months of service that I will not be receiving.

This company is not even in the top 5 list and on other list not mentioned or below top 10. Consider other less expensive options with shorter contracts or no contracts and better service! Take a note on the problems and issues folks are experiencing when canceling with Protection1 or false alarm faults. Search on “Protection1 cancellation reviews”. You will also note issues with cancelling by going to the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

I have used Protection One for two different residences and would never use their services again. It is a nightmare to cancel services after the contract expires. This happened the first time, but they gave me a free unit at my new house, so I went with them again. After 7 years of service and getting a false alarm every month due to faulty equipment and they could not find the issue, I decided to cancel. The last time the tech came out to try and repair the issue, they replaced the battery which should have been no charge with my coverage and they verbally stated that as well.
