Pros

This company is very customer-oriented. It is simple to get a quote by filling out a request form on the company’s website. Current customers can access their accounts online at any time of day. The company offers free installation and activation when customers purchase a plan, which helps stretch the budget. They also offer a 15% discount on equipment for new customers. The systems offered can also be set to ignore the movement of small animals in the home, so pets don’t set off any alarms and cause unnecessary worry.

Cons

This company does not have the best reputation. While businesses are not required to be accredited by the Better Business Bureau, acquiring this accreditation can be seen as a good-faith gesture on the part of the business. We talked to a sales manager that indicated most of their complaints deal with their auto-renewal agreement. We were assured by the manager that Safe Home Security is working hard to improve their score and resolve complaints.

Our Recommendation

Overall, this company is not one of the best security companies out there. There are other more reputable companies that consumers should look at first. These companies have better customer reviews and fewer complaints by consumers.

Safe Home Security Contract Details

Section 3
Monitoring: Company agrees to provide monitoring services for a period of 36 months from the above date.  This agreement shall automatically renew without action by either party under the same terms and conditions for successive periods equal to one month unless either party gives to the other at least sixty days written notice, prior to expiration date, of intention to terminate this Agreement upon any expiration date.  Upon renewal, service will be billed at then-current monitoring fees.

Why it’s important
Once the initial contract is over, the monitoring services will automatically renew on a month to month basis unless the home own specifically cancels the agreement in writing at least 60 days before the end of the three year period.

Section 9
Service Repairs to the Clients System: Unless otherwise indicated, the client understands that the monitoring fee covers only the monitoring service and client agrees to pay Company for all service or repairs to the alarm system.  Client hereby agrees to periodically test, at least monthly, observe Client’s system, be aware of its operational status in accordance with the operating instructions, and request service if needed.

Why it’s important
Any repairs that are needed on the system are the customer’s responsibility.  The month fee only covers the monitoring and will not cover any maintenance done to fix the system.

Section 18
Interruption or delay of Service: The Company assumes no liability for delays in installation or interruption of service due to strikes, riots, floods, fires, acts of God or any causes beyond the control of the Company.  The Company will not be required to supply service to the Client while interruption of the service due to any such cause shall continue.

Why it’s important
If something happens that interrupts the monitoring of your system the company is not responsible for anything that happens during the period.  For example, long power outages, natural disasters, fire, or any other incident that cuts off service immediately alleviates Safe Home from any responsibilities.

Section 22
Warning and Testing of Equipment: Smoke detectors, panic buttons, medical pendants, and other electronic components operate off A.C. (electric) or battery power.  If batteries become dead or electric power is lost, smoke detectors and other components will not operate and the alarm will not sound or communicate to the central station.  The System and all components should be tested by the Clients at least twice monthly through to the central station to insure the System is functioning.  If the Client discovers malfunctions or desires explanation on system testing, he should contact the company’s service department for immediate service.  The Company assumes no liability for periodic testing of the system.

Why it’s important
If is your job to check your batteries and equipment functionality twice a month.  If something goes awry and the equipment doesn’t work it is your fault for not checking it.

Section 23
Failure to meet payment: In the event of a failure to meet a scheduled payment of any of the charges due and payable on this Agreement, the remainder of this Agreement, including interest of 1.5% per month (18% per year) and the attorney’s fees accrued thereon, will be accelerated and become immediately payable in full.

Why it’s important
If you fail to make the monthly payments then you will be charged the remainder of the months left on the contract plus interest and attorney’s fees.  Although you weren’t able to make the one monthly payment, somehow you are required to pay everything listed above in full right away.

Section 27
Increase in service fees: Company shall have the right, at any time, to increase the service fee to reflect any additional governmental fees such as increased taxes, licenses, permits, or fees which Company may incur or which may be charged to Company by any utility or governmental agency relating to the services Company provides and Client agrees to pay the same.  In addition, Company may increase the services fee for any renewal term by giving Client sixty days prior notice.

Why it’s important
Safe Home can increase their monthly monitoring fees anytime they get hit with an increase in fees from the government.  For example, if they are charged an extra fee or tax they will pass that cost onto you in the form of increasing the monthly fee.  Also, at the time of contract renewal they can increase your rate by informing you of the increase at least 60 days before the renewal.

This company lies and manipulates you. After 5 years being trapped my contract auto renewed another 3 years. I called and sent cancellation in writing as instructed by them. They call me back and say it needs to be 60 days before your contract renews.

Google and see hundreds of similar complaints. Websites set up to warn people about this terrible company.

I had a 3 yr contract. I lost my house after 2 years, but only to complete the contract I kept paying. Before the end of the third year I sent a letter to cancel the service, to prevent a renewal. My letter was undelivered because they had moved. I re-sent it and they said that the had gotten it late. That the contract had auto-renewed and there was nothing they could do. My only option was to get my bank to stop disbursing money to them every month. They sent me to collection. Worst thieves I’ve encountered.

Unfortunately, this company has bad ratings on every site you visit. One site had 52 reviews, all 1 stars. I wish I would have realized that when my husband and I fell into a trap with them.

We had just moved into our home in April of 2013 and a man came to our driveway and told us that he was with Safe Home Security and that they were looking for 2 homes on the each block to essentially be a “show” home. Homes that had good curb appeal and were centrally located. We had been contemplating an alarm system anyway so we listened intently. He “claimed” that they would offer us a 50% off deal with the company since we were one of those (plus another home on the block just signed with them that day). With that, we got 3 doors, and a motion sensor. I figured his 50% off thing was just a manipulation technique, but they seemed reputable and he answered all of our questions the right way. We asked very pointed questions, like, “We do not want any sort of a contract. If in two years we decide we cannot afford this anymore, will we be able to call and cancel and not be locked into a contract?” His answer? “Absolutely not!! There is NO contract. You can call and cancel service at any time.”

Within the first 3 months, the alarm set off at least 5 times. We were out of town the first three times, and we requested they send police. They obliged and said they would call. Our neighbor sat outside for over an hour and no police ever came any of those times. Same story for the last 3 years, only they have quit calling when the system goes off. I also have video coverage of both them failing to call on our phone or wall pad and also of the motion sensor not working. We have had the motion sensor replaced 3 times because of the same issues…malfuntioning. Yet each time, the problem is not corrected. Pretty sure last year they just turned it off all together so it would stop going off randomly. We had it set to not recognize anything under 55 lbs b/c we have a 20 lb dog. Doesn’t seem to make a difference.

We called in October of 2015 b/c we are unable to afford the service anymore. We are a one income family as I am a stay at home mother and had another unexpected monthly charge hit us. I called…since we under no contract…and was told that we could not cancel because we were 2.5 yrs into a 5 year contract. Imagine my surprise to hear that. Not only that, but the man I spoke with said that we should be getting way more than what we were for $50 a month. He told me he would talk to his superior and see if they would let us out of the contract, but I was never called back. On another call, I explained the whole situation again and they very rudely said I was an idiot for not reading through the entire contract. They also promised me a “free month” for my troubles. Never got that. I demanded a copy of our contract and a copy of the bill breakdown. Was told I would get a copy of a bill and a copy of our contract that we supposedly signed and it took me over a month and 3 more phone calls to finally get that. We only got one because we sought an attorney and put a stop payment on our auto-draft. At that point they finally sent a copy of the contract but the signatures were all cut off where you couldn’t read them. At that point they red-flagged our account. My husband tried to get a tech out to fix our motion sensor and they wouldn’t send one out. They also refused payment that day, refusing to talk to him at all. They are still sending letters to our attorney despite the fact that he has written back 3 times telling them that all correspondence needs to be with us directly. They have never once in the last 4 months attempted to contact us in any way.

Rule of thumb. Do your research before going with ANY alarm company. Make sure they are reputable. If they lie and tell you there is no contract, get it in writing with a signature. You have within 3 business days by law to be able to cancel your service. If you find out you are scammed like we were, don’t wait to cancel! And definitely don’t ever choose Safe Home Security. They are a fraudulent company who cares nothing about your safety or the effectiveness of their products. They will not hesitate to scam anyone. And from what I read, they will not let you out of a contract even if you abide by their 60-day in writing cancellation.

I had the system for three years. My alarm went off 5 times in that period and they only responded twice. Thank God nothing happened it was an error, but no phone call and no followup, no dispatch to police. I then decided to cancel it and it was coming due end of May. I called at the beginining of May and they had already renewed my contract. I was told they needed a cancelation in writing 60 days prior. Never got a bill. Was never told about the 60 day notice. Never in 15 months got any communication from them mind you. I just checked Credit Karma and found that my 857 credit score is now 654 with Experian. All these years of A credit ….these unprofessional people made that all go away with their callous attitude. People protect yourselves and your credit and do NOT give your info to this company they will ruin you!

This company is unethical with terrible business practices and should not be in business. My husband was excited when his step dad offered us a free system he ‘won’ to protect me and our two young kids on our 13 acres while my husband worked weeks at a time out of town. The company came and installed the system and had my husband sign a contract. The installer told my husband that the only way to get out of the contract is if we move. Yes, my husband should have asked more questions and should have read the contract in more detail, but we are trusting people and did not expect to get so screwed! Now, almost 2 years later we are selling our house and will be living with my mother in law while we look for another one. Safe Home Security says that we have to pay for the system for 5 years no matter what. Our only other option is to pay $1600 to have it cancelled. I own my own business and I would NEVER hold anyone accountable to pay for a service for an additional 3 years that they will not be using.

I would suggest that no one does business with this company.

This company is a joke! I signed a five year contract; at the end of the 5 years I tried to cancel my service. They told me that, per the fine print I did not cancel 30 days in advance to the end of the contract therefore I was stuck with them for an additional year. They will not cancel my service. I would not suggest this company to my worst enemy. With so many good companies out there how can companies like this expect to exists. I will be posting this message on my Facebook, the BBB and anyone else who will listen. Companies like this need to be exposed for their scandalous business tactics.

Our contract with SHS was for three years. In 2014 we had to have a service call at our home. The service tech after I paid him handsomely, had me sign his service call sheet. At no time did he say that by signing it, I would be extending the contract for 5 years. This is a fraudulent method of keeping you on as a customer whether you want to or not. We are both retired now and on limited income and don’t need people conning us in order to line their pockets.

I am very unhappy with this company. One of the sales reps has been haggling me for months (Dave) complaining oh cmon buddy I have mouths to feed just sign up sign up. So I finally cave and the service is horrible. I constantly lose signal and they don’t want to hear anything. Called Dave and is basically told me it’s not his issues the techs need to fix it. I want to cancel and cannot. I am locked into auto renewal unless I pay ridiculous fee. Do not do business with these crooks. Scam artists.

Horrible business. They keep telling me the wrong date to when I can cancel. I finally get to the date and send in my termination letter. Called back to make sure everything went through and it did go through. They said that I was mistaken and that I was automatically enrolled again for another year because I was late getting my letter in. I told them that I was not late and they said I had to get the letter there before march. They told me Sept. Now its March. So because they lied to me I am stuck with these people for another year. I don’t want the service and I have been trying to cancel for 4 years now. I am so frustrated with this corporation. So because I don’t want this service they requested that I pay them almost $450 to end my service. They have no ethics and are a disgrace. I have been through more war with this company than on the battlefield in Afghanistan. For a person who is a young disabled veteran that is a lot of money. Wish this company would have more standards and understand how to treat their customers.

BEWARE!!!This is the WORST company EVER!! Their customer service is absolutely horrible. You never get the same person to help you when there is a problem (which is always there fault). Took a month to even get the system set up when we moved, then they charged me during the time I didn’t even have the service up and running! Now even though I have the warranty plan they decided to charge my card for a service call (which is supposed to be covered) from 3 months ago!! And after 2 weeks still don’t have the refund and cant get anyone to call me back to find out what is going on…..DO NOT use this company!!! BAD BUSINESS…..BAD

The customer service with this company is not good. There are a few reps who are polite and professional, but management overall is unprofessional, and rude. At least with the two managers I had conversation with.. Consumers should feel that their business is appreciated and valued. The system itself is okay. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Spend your money where you are appreciated and valued. Terminating my service with them when my contract ends in a few weeks!

This is an absolutely INCOMPETENT business! I have had an account for 7 years and not only had a technician call to tell me he couldn’t show up at the last minute, after I had taken vacation to be there. Then a second time, I CALLED to confirm the install. To my surprise (not really), there was no install scheduled. To add to the insult, they actually talked me into upgrading my contract from 34.95 to 54.95 and waived me for one month. They ALSO did not inform me of my options. I was told that this was a 5 year contract. I was NOT told that this could be a 3 OR 5 year contract. Then I was billed the first month after being promised a waiver of the first month. This company does nothing but lie and generate a bill. DO NOT sign a contract with this company. I have seen absolutely no proof that they do anything except automatically bill your account. You will not receive phone calls or invoices, and you WILL be automatically renewed at the end of your contract if you do not call them to cancel it. They do absolutely NOTHING to protect you.

My mother law had service for the house and medical. When she couldn’t breathe her caretaker pushed the medical button…it didn’t work she died. We have been trying to cancel the service, a deceased person really doesn’t need it….they won’t shut it off and now we get a bill for $500.

Worse alarm Company out there. I finished my 5 year contract with them. Sent them a letter to cancel. Once they cancelled, about 10 months later I was reported to the credit bureau stating that I owed a past due amount. I never received a bill that I owe anything nor any notification. This is a big scam! Stay away! Now my credit dropped drastically. I am working on hiring a lawyer. Waste of time and money! Please stay away.

service was a bit expensive ($45/mo for 36 months) and of course it auto renewed for an additional 12 months when I failed to notify them 30 days in advance. Equipment was good, but not great. Response to alarms and/or tests was a bit slower than I’m sure anybody would want if somebody was in their house. Customer service was…spotty. one or two reps I spoke to were very helpful, yet another was so rude and condescending that I immediately mailed (yes, you have to notify of your intent to NOT renew in writing) in my cancellation letter. I was signed up for auto pay using a credit card, yet they still mailed a paper bill and several times sent ‘past due!’ letters. Really?! Dumped these clowns, not looking back.

This company promised a particular system and when the person came to my house, they made arrangements that seemed to please me just to sell the system. The system was not installed correctly, and malfunctioned, and the company service was really bad, as they told me I am locked into a contract. They wanted to schedule a time to resolve the problem but with me missing work and not getting paid. The alarm went off, unresolved such that I had to disconnect it in order to sleep. The service was terrible. I would never recommend this company.
