Vivint Smart Home offers home security, security cameras, and home automation devices for residential homes. Right now, the company has no activation fee. However, if you opt to finance your equipment, you’re locked into a 5-year contract with high monthly fees. Check out Vivint Reviews Below to see what customers are saying about the security provider and post your own review of Vivint.

Pros

Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Customers can use either Vivint’s SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint’s monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint’s app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint’s home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat. For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue – LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint’s 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you’ll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn’t have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint’s 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

  Vivint Protect America Frontpoint
Equipment Upfront $500 - $1800 $0 $69 - $833
Basic Alarm Monitoring $29.99 $19.99 - $41.99 $34.99
Video Monitoring $49.99 $24.99 - $49.99 $49.99
Contract 5-year 3-year 3-year
Installation Professional; $50 - $200 DIY DIY
Customer Rating 1/10 8/10 7/10

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn’t display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website. Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing. In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you’ll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps. In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don’t fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation – which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of. Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews. Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company’s overall score. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront. The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Vivint Home Security and Smart Home Packages

Vivint has various home security solutions (24/7 professional monitoring) with a variety of equipment available. If you use their monitoring services, you will be personally alerted via the Vivint Smart Home app, and if your alarm goes off, their customer service reps will call you and assess your situation before dispatching emergency personnel.

How Much Does Vivint Cost?

Vivint offers three home monitoring packages: one for home security, one for home security and locks, and one for video monitoring. The prices listed below are for monitoring only. Smart Protect: $29.99/month

  • Vivint Smart Home mobile app
  • Alarm – burglary detection
  • Door / window sensor
  • Motion sensor

  • Smoke / fire sensor
  • Carbon monoxide sensor
  • Flood / water sensor

Smart Protect + Control: $39.99/month

  • Vivint Ping indoor camera: HD wide-angle lens, two-way communication, infrared night vision, one-touch calling, and custom mobile notifications.

If you purchase a video monitoring subscription from Vivint, you can have 30 days of cloud storage for up to four cameras (doorbell camera, outdoor and indoor camera. Add another camera for additional costs. The 30-days includes 24/7 camera footage stored to the Vivint Smart Drive (1TB).

Car Guard

  • Car maintenance reminders
  • Location tracking
  • Tamper alert
  • Sync with your home automation or home security system

How Do I Cancel Vivint?

To cancel your monitoring contract with Vivint, you will need to send in a written request that includes your name, address, and account number. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don’t want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

Does Vivint Offer Solar?

Yes, Vivint Solar operates separately from Vivint Smart Home. Customers may be able to integrate their solar panels with their Vivint Smart Home and manage all from one hub.

So it looks as if we are not out of the ordinary here. This company is GARBAGE!! We signed up for their services shortly after buying our new home. Worked great for about a month and then everything went FUBAR. This stupid system rarely works. The door sensors stop working whenever they feel like it, the automatic door lock stopped working from the outside key pad and trying to get someone to come out, you have to go through their ridiculously lengthy call procedure first. If you choose to skip it, they can send someone out for $50.00. WTH?!? This is the worst company I’ve dealt with and I tell all the residents that are new to our subdivision to stay far far away. The people they send out are rude and pushy and normally show up around 6-7pm. I cannot wait until the contract is up bc I will be cancelling so fast. I hate that we spend over $60 a month for such garbage.

I’ve been a Vivint customer for years and have been pleased with the company, product and services. However, today I had a fire mishap in the kitchen that filled my home with thick smoke and no alarm! I called the company and despite me being 62 years old, on crutches with a torn Achilles’ tendon, I had to hobble into a chair to push a button on the ceiling mounted device, remove the sensor and replace batteries that were not defective only to be told they would send a new device as mine was defective. I had no idea. How would I know if the new device is working?? I’m done. This is ridiculous. Don’t even ask them about their video doorbell! Talk about a rip-off. Run from this company. It’s been more than three weeks. I’ve called two times since my first review. My first two requests for operational equipment were not fulfilled. The tech today said no order was ever placed for new equiI pay for a system every month and I have no idea if any of it works. I called again today, and according to the system the part was never ordered either time I have called in the last few weeks. Supposedly, they are going to overnight me the smoke sensor. Then I will get to climb up on a ladder again with my torn Achilles tendon and replace it by myself. They are going to credit me my monthly fee, and give me a discount on the next month. I do not trust this company. I would not recommend them to anyone after this fiasco. There are much more reputable companies to deal with. Run! Update, it’s now December. I called to cancel my service because I’m having another company install their system. They told me I would have to send an email and it would take 30 days for the deactivation to occur. Just another month of collecting money for doing nothing. I’m definitely in the wrong job. However, I am done, finally, with Vivint home security. Yay!!

I would do your research into this company before using them, they tell you one thing and do another just to get you signed up. I was suppose to have my system installed on Sunday but they canceled on me because the installer never showed up to work. When we rescheduled they tried to set it up for monday 12/2, I could not take off so we rescheduled for Tuesday 12/3 between the hours 10-12, when i called to see if i could get an earlier time they said my install was pushed back till 12/10. So you are telling me that i am getting punished for your installed canceling on me. I am about to spend over 1600 dollars on equipment and over 50 dollars a month for this service and this is how they treat there Customers, NO THANKS!!!! INSTALL WAS CANCELED!!!

I have to agree with most everyone here. Vivint is a horrible company to deal with and is a joke of a security system. I had a system installed in two different homes. During the install of the security systems at home #1 the technician was extremely lazy and didn’t want to install the camera or hook up any of the pre existing vivint products from the previous installation. I had to have a second installer come out to finish the installation and still none of the window sensors are tied to the install. During the installation of home #2 I had another lazy installer that didn’t want to install the camera as well did a poor installation of the few pieced of equipment as well. The new motion sensor fell off the wall causing a false alarm and breaking the motion detector. The one camera that was installed on the second installation has failed as well and no longer works. These problems aren’t even the worst of it.

To this date, I have never been given a invoice of what actual equipment had been installed in either house and what I’m paying for.

Last but not least, I am selling one of the houses. They are attempting to charge me over $2000 for canceling my account for the one home. This is totally ridiculous. To top it all off, the system doesn’t work worth a crap anyway. I can never see the video from the doorbell quick enough to see who is there before they leave and it isn’t a fault of the internet connection. I have a super quick and dependable commercial internet account. Stay away from Vivint and ignore this sales add on this page.

Vivint is the worst service organization I’ve ever dealt with in my life. Their products are highly unreliable in that in 30 months I’ve probably had 6 months when something didn’t need attention. Then the service is on you to troubleshoot, install, replace, etc. through either a chat or phone troubleshooting. Rarely does this lead to effective results because most the problems are poor hardware.

Then if you don’t take your time and money to ship back to them broken products you reinstalled yourself they charge your account excessive dollar amounts. I didn’t mail back a door lock unit which was broken and they charge me $180. I asked when after probably 6 online chat and 4 phone calls over eight months if I could send the door lock with the technician and get credit they said no. So I’ve got to drive to a Fedex store, pay to ship back the product, call them with a tracking number, and then get credit to send back a broken unit that I had to install myself. Meanwhile my “security” system has been offline for the better part of a year and they refuse to help or to provide any type of refund.

I’ll crap myself if this place is in business in three years. It’s a sham.

Not being able to cancel and wasn’t even told it’s a 5 years contract. The representative stated 2 years and I literally mentioned I do not want to pay more than 45$ monthly. Now it’s 63$ per month. What a scam . It’s really the 5 years that got me upset . Vivint is not disclosing all cons.

Starting off the salesman was deceptive. The contract lingo is very hard to read and the salesman deciphered it in a way that is not thre case. I wish I would’ve cancelled in that very small cancellation window. They paid off $800 of my previous ADT contract but I didn’t realize I was having to sign on to a FIVE YEAR Contract with Vivint. I would’ve been better off paying the $800 cancellation myself and not going with Vivint. I have had one problem after another with equipment and then charging a card on file without my consent. My account IS NOT set up on auto pay and I did not approve them draft a payment for a piece of equipment that was supposed to go into my installments. There’s nothing good I have to say about the company. It has shady billing practices and I am stuck. I was getting out of a $1,000 contract not realizing i signed up for a contract of over $3,000!!!! I’m livid and stuck. Awful company. Don’t use them!!!!!!
ALSO I have met multiple people who have said that they finished their contract and Vivint CONTINUES taking moves from their account even after cancelling. So whether it is shady business or an awful flaw in their system I am not happy. I am ready to be RID of them.

Vivint has terrible customer service and promises prices that are not true when they sign you up. Unfortunately, we trusted our sales guy and didn’t check our automatic deduction soon enough. After 6 months I finally realized we were being charged $40 a month instead of the $20 we were told. Very disappointed to say the least! They are not willing to do anything to make it better. The guy did offer $200 towards a 36 month contract. Seriously? Who would want to sign up for 3 more years after being lied to and offered no reimbursement. They even admitted that our sales person told us the wrong price but would not offer to make it right.

A door to door sales representative for Vivint came to our house offering the companies services. After the sales pitch, the sales representative offer to pay our current contract with Brinks if we switched to Vivint at the moment he had us call Brinks to ask how much we needed to pay if we cancelled our contract. In order to cancel our contract with Brinks we had to pay close to $1,700 but the sales representative suggested he could pay the full amount to cancel with Brinks if we had other properties were we could contract Vivint services. We told him we did have 2 business were we could use security cameras, after some more negotiating, we agreed with Vivint’s representative to have our Brinks account cancellation payment paid in full in exchange for 3 accounst(our home and 2 business). Installation in our 3 addresses were completed after many inconveniences such as the installation guys staying out place of business after midnight and me received calls and text messages around 1:00 a.m. in the morning. Two weeks after not receiving the money to pay for the cancellation of our contract with Brinks and after several calls and text messages with no response by the sales representative, I decided to leave him a message telling him I was going to contact Vivint directly to let them know of the issues we were having. On the same day I called Vivint and told them all the issues we have had with their representative and we were told to send the letter we received from Brinks about the cancellation amount due. After they reviewed the cancellation letter from Brinks, a Brinks representative contacted me to let me know that unfortunately they could not honor the offers offered to us by their door to door representative. Since it was past the 3 day deadline to cancel, they only offer to cancel the account in our house but that there was nothing they could do to cancel the contract for our 2 business locations. Right now we are stuck with a company that not only offers expensive and lousy service but those not honorable because they do not stand by their representatives word.

When we signed up for Vivint, we were told by the salesman it was a 2 year contract. We were also told we would be getting the equipment for the service free. Both of these things were false. It is a five year contract and almost 2,000 dollars for the equipment. DO NOT BUY VIVINT. This is a big scam.

The app doesn’t work for scheduled temperatures. Complained many times and still isn’t fixed . Had a technical come out and he was clueless. Thermostat had to be replaced within 6 months and that was a $25 fee to ship it to me and I had to install it. The billing department is terrible. I have to call every month because my bill isn’t correct. Run as fast as you can from this company. I’m so sorry I am in a contract with them.

Was talked into signing a 5 year contract for a lower monthly rate which wasn’t true. Had to relocate due to employment to another state. After being in the contract for over 3 years Vivint wouldn’t let us cancel even though we were moving out of state and having to rent an apartment for a year or more. They have no compassion for life events that happen. All they say is… you’re in a contract. Their contracts and customer service and rates are the worst. I would never recommend Vivint to even my worst enemy. I’d rather go without security than have to deal with this company. What they offer on television and online isn’t truthful. There’s nothing as “free”.

My truck was stolen from in front of my house last night. I have been trying to access the play back footage for over three hours today with no luck. I have been on the phone with Vivint for over two hours to figure out what the issue is and still no resolution. Why would I pay for a security system when I can’t even access the footage? I am stuck until my “ticket” gets processed to see if they can recover the footage. If not, I am cancelling service and going elsewhere.

    Buyer Beware!!!

Had them for years and they were fine – not great but fine. A few months back my husband and I decided to add a video door bell upgrade. The salesman Jonathan G sold us a pack of lies – was told us he could reduce our rate, get all new equipment Plus the video doorbell. At no time did he explain he was opening a new account and opening a loan in our name for the equipment which I will be paying for the next 5-years in addition to the cost of the monitoring service. Not only did he not explain this – we did not get all new equipment except for the video door bell – the installer simply changed out some batteries in our old equipment. So now I have a $2,200.00+ loan in my name on my credit report for a door bell I could have purchased outright at Best Buy or Amazon. Customer Service is not budging nor are they willing to offer any compensation. They told me if I want to cancel – I have to pay off the loan before they will remove their equipment and services. I hope they go out of business!!!

I would avoid this at all costs. They came door to door to sell to us and it seemed like a good deal so i jumped in and never really questioned it. Now i know that monitoring through Ring (which works on wireless the same as Vivint) is only $10 compared to the $55 vinint charges. We also paid roughly $3000 for what I now know is about $400 worth of equiptment. Factor in the fees to cancel after they have gouged you for so long and its a nightmare. Thermostat barely ever worked correctly.

I will say that their monitoring was always great, but i have no experience with other companies to compare.

In my opinion, absolutely avoid at all costs.
