One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a 'home automation' solution. Customers can use either Vivint's SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint's monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint's app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Vivint's 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You're basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren't too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation - which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

How Do I Cancel Vivint?

To cancel your monitoring contract with Vivint, you will need to send in a written request that includes your name, address, and account number. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

They manipulate your words and force you into verbal contracts that you do not agree too. They also, will set you up for auto pay and then wait to withdraw money months prior to the set date. Beware of this company rates are not quoted properly and manipulation is there best asset. I will not recommend this company to anyone and will be looking for a different service provider.

Purchased system during their partnership with BestBuy. I opted for un-monitored due to outrageous rates for monitored. The partership died a few months later and I was hit with full monitor cost ( NOTE: a glassbreak that wasn't responded to made us realize even though we were charged for the monitor service, we weren't being monitored. This was verified thru Vivint.) Not to mention, our system has had issues from day 1. Our outdoor camera is always offline. We reset it and it goes right back to offline status. The system tells us our door is open, it's not, when we turn on security mode. I could go on-and-on. Don't buy.

My business has been robbed on several occasions and Vivint was not able to help with any of it, why because the equipment that I paid for was not even installed originally. I was sold a recording device on my system for cameras to record and it was never installed. So, when someone came in to our backyard and stole equipment I could not go back to see it. The only thing I could do is was make a police report. If that’s not bad enough my alarm goes off all the time while I am closed, not because someone is breaking in, but because Vivint's equipment, that I spent well over $4000 on doesn't work correctly and then the police come out to false alarms and they charge me too!! I call Vivint to ask for help and after holding, getting passed around, dropping my calls, and I finally get to talk to someone. You know what they tell me? Go around to the sensors and put tape on them to prevent them from picking up movement while the alarm is on The service crews that come out have no idea what they are doing. I have had several of them out to my business and each time they say the last guy was an idiot and they didn't do things correctly. They then fix what they think is wrong and tell me that the people they need to talk to isn’t available and they will need to come back another time. I still do not have a working system (Jan 2020) and it was installed in July 2017. They tell me they are going to come out and fix my issues, but no one shows up. I then call and try to get some help but then I have to start my whole story over again with someone new and they always say this time will be better. It never is.... When it comes to the billing department, they are not any better. My bill doesn’t have my correct name or address. No problem right, just give them a call and they can fix it. NOT. I have called several times and have asked them to one correct the spelling of my name, and two my mailing address is incorrect, it is 8699 and they have 5699 Apt A. I am not an even in an apartment or a suite, it is just a single stand alone building. I get paperless billing, thank goodness, because I would never see a bill if it were up to them. To top it all off, I was supposed to have a technician come out to install a new panel. I was told that it would fix all my issues. Well it didn’t happen. They scheduled a technician in Sept, he showed up and had no idea why he was there and did not have the equipment to fix my issues. He was at least helpful enough to replace batteries and failing motion detectors. He then ordered that new panel and I was given a date to have him return 4 weeks later to install the panel. Yeah, 4 weeks was the soonest they could get back. I wait 4 weeks and you wouldn’t believe it, the guy that shows up has no idea why he is there and does not have my panel. Its now the end of October and still do not have a working system! Wouldn't it be nice if someday someone at Vivint would take notice of my disaster of a security system and live up to their word!!

I bought my Vivint system in 2017 and i purchased all of my equipment upfront, I have never financed equipment through Vivint.. The result of buying the equipment upfront is No contract agreements and cheaper monthly cost ($19.00) and monitored professionally, the equipment has worked great most of the time and about once a year i have to call them to resolve an issue which gets resolved but not a deal breaker for me.. I have the smart hub and the latest Pro Cameras installed plus glass breaks and auto door locks, smoke alarms , and countless other equipment and they work great.. I also have linksys Velop mesh wireless system to support my Vivint wireless needs...I do recommend Vivint to people i know and regarding customer service that too has been satisfactory with no complaints ...

I've had nothing but ongoing problems with the equipment not working correctly since I got the service two years ago! They want to charge you an outlandish fee for someone to come out. Instead, they tie you up for hours with troubleshooting commands over the phone! Customer service is horrible! You get one tech who tells you one thing and then you get another one telling you something completely different on the same issue!! Wish I had never signed with them!!

Have had Vivint security system since June 2016. For the past 4 months, our window sensor has been alerting us to change the battery. When my husband changed the battery, the sensor continued to be alerted. We called Vivint customer service, sent a picture of the sensor via email and were told that we do not have a Vivint sensor. Wow! When the system was installed, we were not told that they would use existing sensors. I called Vivint and was given the complete runaround. They offered to replace the sensors, but at a buy one/get one free rate. Why should we pay for new sensors when we were never told that Vivint was not going to replace the sensors with Vivint sensors? While our experience with them over the past 3 years has been good, this has dampened that and I just want to cancel. Please beware and make sure they are installing Vivint products. That is what you are paying for. Very deceptive company!!!!

Very ambivalent feelings and a cautious attitude is necessary. The promises of buy outs are generalized and vague. Customers may be in for utter frustration because one is not told that buyouts are handled by an external 3rd party. I had a hell of a time dealing with them so much vivint’s resolution debt tried to step in. The problems are obvios. 1 Salesman want to close a deal in same visit and say what they may think is either a truth or exaggerate. 2. Exaggerate the easiness of getting a buyout payment, in case one has another company for similar survives. 3. I found out that after several days and many attempts, the 3rd party rejected every action and form. Always asking for information already on hand. Like I stated possible solution after this ordeal was with vivint. They know or should have known about this problem with buyouts. 4. You will not get a hard copy of any agreement. I will definitely not recommend this company. The salesman did attempt to help me on this issue and was in disbelieve this is going on, yet they continue with same.

I acquired a Vivint security system with the purchase of my house in 2017. The first six months to one year was sincerely great. (Maybe that's why the professional reviews are so positive? Most or all aren't long term reviews.) Vivint's response time with respect to the professional monitoring component was and continues to be very good when the system functions properly. So, why the one star review? There are a few reasons: 1) Unreliable equipment - Equipment reliability under normal conditions should be a top priority. If components fail, then you don't get that wonderful response time when a security event happens. In our case, the Sky Control panel has become increasingly unreliable over our time with the system (suspiciously, the climax coincided with Vivint releasing a new Sky Control panel). We called support multiple times and they were unable to remedy the problem, so they sent a technician, who determined he should swap our panel. I think that helped for a few weeks, after which we were back to worsening system performance to the extent that we occasionally could not disarm the house, including from a smartphone. There were substantial delays in countdown when we tried to arm the house and have even experienced instances where the cell phone showed that the house had been armed but the house is unlocked and the house disarmed (frightening to come home to). After months of dealing with this and calling support to have them just “send a signal” or “update the panel” and tell us to “call back if it happens again,” we just felt defeated, apathetic (and still under contract). 2) Billing – Billing is a nightmare. When we first acquired the system via transfer of ownership, their system erroneously back-charged us more than a year of service (to the tune of ~$1500), which the previous owner had already paid. It took numerous calls and escalations to remedy the issue. It was an unnerving experience, especially when the company in question has the ability to unlock your front door. 3) Aggressive (up)sales, seemingly without scruples at times – The denouement of this story aligns with my final attempt to remedy our panel sluggishness situation. Support told me there isn’t much more they can do than “send a signal or update” and it sounds like the panel I have is sluggish because it’s the older model (one model before the new one with the black front). He consequently told me he was going to route me to someone who could help me, and routed me to what I later found out was their upgrades department. Rather than helping me, he was trying to push me to purchase a new panel for $699 amortized over 5 years (not the retail price of the panel another department gave me, so that’s sketchy apart from not being what I wanted…). I told him multiple times, paraphrasing, “Look, I don’t watch tv on the panel, so I don’t really need it to be nicer; the one I have is plenty nice and I just want my alarm system to work.” It’s far from the first time they presented signing a new contract as a remedy to the issue. Finally, I was transferred to customer loyalty this most recent time, after an hour of getting nowhere I might add, who told me she needed to send a technician one more time and that if the tech determined that the panel could not be fixed, we had the option of signing a new contract to replace the panel with the latest model. Magically, about a day after that call my panel is functioning properly. I’m not accustomed to seeing planned obsolescence from an alarm company and it left a really bad taste in my mouth… I could go on about other issues I’ve experienced with Vivint, but this review is long enough.

They are not upfront on equipment costs, and termination process. They seem like the cheaper option, but they are not. Customer service is horrible and online system is a joke when controlling or looking at your account.

They used VERY high pressure sales tactics to get us to sign up at 8:00 PM one evening almost 5 years ago. I am a disabled Marine Vietnam combat veteran with severe PTSD and sleeping problems related to night terrors. Vivint played on that and sold us a 5-year contract and insisted that it be installed immediately. They finished at about 11:00 PM and left without the system working. They told us that it would take an hour or two to download stuff and that it would be working when we woke up the next morning. IT HAS NEVER WORKED! They have replaced the "Sky Control" twice, telling us each time that it would start up sometime after they left. Five years and $4,500 later, our seriously iron-clad contract is expiring next month. This system has never worked properly and has never provided a smidgen of security. After repeated calls for service, Vivint finally just stopped responding to us. Stay away from this company! Once you sign one of their contracts, you are well and truly screwed!

This system is the worse alarm system I've every had. The main thing is the doorbell camera has never worked properly. I constantly buffers and hasn't recorded in several weeks. They sent me a new smarthub as a repair to the bufffering of course it didn't fix the problem. They never sent a return address of where to send the smarthub so I couldn't sent it back so as a gift Vivint charge my credit card and additional $350.00 for not returning the modem. The also offered me a buy out from my previous alarm company to pay off my remaining balance with a gift card, it was supposed to be set up during the initial agreement and set-up. But in Vivint's poor customer service they never sent my information to the 3rd party company so they never sent the gift card and it was pass the 60 days that the information was supposed to be entered in their system. Excuse my language but now I'm stuck with this $#itty alarm system for 5 years. Vivint is the most expesive piece of $#!t I've purchased. Do you self a favor and just buy a the ring alarm doorbell system from Amazon and save a ton of money and headaches.

My truck was stolen from in front of my house last night. I have been trying to access the play back footage for over three hours today with no luck. I have been on the phone with Vivint for over two hours to figure out what the issue is and still no resolution. Why would I pay for a security system when I can't even access the footage? I am stuck until my "ticket" gets processed to see if they can recover the footage. If not, I am cancelling service and going elsewhere.

Buyer Beware!!! Had them for years and they were fine - not great but fine. A few months back my husband and I decided to add a video door bell upgrade. The salesman Jonathan G sold us a pack of lies - was told us he could reduce our rate, get all new equipment Plus the video doorbell. At no time did he explain he was opening a new account and opening a loan in our name for the equipment which I will be paying for the next 5-years in addition to the cost of the monitoring service. Not only did he not explain this - we did not get all new equipment except for the video door bell - the installer simply changed out some batteries in our old equipment. So now I have a $2,200.00+ loan in my name on my credit report for a door bell I could have purchased outright at Best Buy or Amazon. Customer Service is not budging nor are they willing to offer any compensation. They told me if I want to cancel - I have to pay off the loan before they will remove their equipment and services. I hope they go out of business!!!

I would avoid this at all costs. They came door to door to sell to us and it seemed like a good deal so i jumped in and never really questioned it. Now i know that monitoring through Ring (which works on wireless the same as Vivint) is only $10 compared to the $55 vinint charges. We also paid roughly $3000 for what I now know is about $400 worth of equiptment. Factor in the fees to cancel after they have gouged you for so long and its a nightmare. Thermostat barely ever worked correctly. I will say that their monitoring was always great, but i have no experience with other companies to compare. In my opinion, absolutely avoid at all costs.

We just bought a home with Vivint already installed and paid for. To have services turned on we were told that we could pay $49.99 a month and a tech would come out to update the equipment. Ok, we figured we would try it out for a month and see. Our scheduled appointment day/time comes and goes and we don't hear from anyone. The next day we call and they tell us that they called 3 times and even had someone come out. First of all I had no missed calls or a single voicemail from anyone and second my husband was home the entire time and not a single person came to the door. Then they tried saying that 2 people came at different times. And then another came the next day but nobody was home. Why would someone come the next day when were scheduled the day before? Already frustrated with this whole process. We've canceled and requested a refund. They were really quick to charge us but not so quick to provide the services that were paid for upfront. RED FLAGS!

Never, ever sign up with Vivint. If you have to leave your home for any reason, you will be stuck with the entire contract bill, whatever is left unless the people buying your home want to take over the contract. It's expensive and NOT worth it!!!!

Vivint sent a tech that damaged my home and then told me they wouldn't pay unless they were able to choose the contractor that would do the repairs then tried to send a company that has a registered offender to my home around me and my small children!!!! Do not deal with this company! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

I've had vivint for about a year and to say I hate it is an understatement. It is beyond frustrating. This is exactly why I don't do contracts because now I'm stuck with them for another year. I have several issues with the app and company including -the app doesn't always work when I'm trying to lock/unlock my front door -the panel won't allow me to change the doorpad code on either doors -the doorpad needs new batteries too often -the doorbell videos don't always update so I don't have recent videos -the alarm can't be heard from the upper level so I asked for a second panel but they said no so I asked for the panel to be moved to my upper level which isn't an ideal location because now if I do have an intruder, they won't hear it -the guy who moved my panel couldn't repair the hole in my wall These are just the issues I can think of. I need convenience so the fact that I have to call them so often is such a headache. I'll never use them and never sign up for a contract service.

Vivint cameras record motion detection when they feel like it. I have had so many technical issues over the last few years. Don’t waste your time and/or money. New clients get the latest and greatest equipment while those who have been with the company get no loyalty rewards. Tried to cancel and it will cost me $1,900 because I wanted some new equipment, which doesn’t work half the time, and they extended my contract. Terrible service. Do not waste your money on shoddy equipment.

They don't tell you stopping service is an actual feeling of removing a limb from your body.....it actually feels like you have to chop off your arm to stop service....you have to give them 30 days and that is only if you speak to the right person and you have to submit something in actual writing and pray they get it and if not they keep charging you. I have called them several times and explained we moved from the house and stop service..but they can't get that through their heads......I have given them pass code among mothers maiden names and felt like I needed to give them blood sample to get them to stop billing me after I have moved 3 months later!!!!!!

I really, really hate Vivint with an ever-increasing passion!!! Their new thermostat refuses to allow my furnace to kick on, leaving us with 60 degree temps in 0-20 degree weather; the deadbolt won't work in the cold, leaving us stranded at our own front door in blizzards; the motion-detection camera works only randomly at best; their sales rep tricked my family into a 5 year contract when they thought it was only for 2 years; and their service reps are infuriating. We have put up with this garbage for 4.5 years and my hate just grows stronger with every issue and every contact. They give conflicting information and excuses. They blame everything else (despite obvious facts to the contrary) while accepting no responsibility for their own faulty equipment. Today - after a number of calls over a period of weeks - the rep refused my request for a service tech, required me to disassemble the thermostat, shut off the breaker to my furnace, disconnect the wiring - all while I repeatedly requested a service tech be sent. He assured me I just had to complete these diagnostic steps first. I did so - but the wiring connections failed to reset. He eventually agreed to send a tech - but the soonest available appointment is tomorrow! With no thermostat and presumably no heat while the temp outside drops to 10 degrees??!! I really, really hate Vivint. All my family was looking for was a security system. Instead, I feel like we - and our heat, and our access to our home - have been taken hostage! Vivinet has the WORST customer service ever. I would NEVER recommend this system to anyone. It has never worked properly always needing updating. Visa was compromised the company wouldn't send out a bill via mail continued call EVERY single day during work hours, messages on the system, alerts on the phone via the system about the bill they never sent via mail. STAY AWAY even when my husband talked about the bill to a guy on the phone for the six day in a row telling them the cheque was in the mail they laughed in the back ground. Vivient is seriously the worst. And this is the first complaint I've ever written because this company is the WORST!!!!

After a scare in 2017, my family decided to update our alarm system and opted for Vivint due to the high ratings and mobile options. Unfortunately, it wasn't the best relationship from the first month on. Several sensor malfunctions, including batteries flying out of them when simply shutting a door. In the three years that we've had the service, we may have set the alarm for six months due to the number of errors. We did try to cancel the service, but was forced to pay for the equipment that did not work properly. Vivint did make an offer to send a technician to fix the issue... for a $99 fee. Forget it.

Had a horrible experience with Vivint. I used their system for less than 4 months before purchasing another system. Constantly had low home times or cameras that didn’t work. They wouldn’t let me out of the contract, or reduce the costs. This company is a scam.

Nothing but problems from the beginning! I would write out all of the problems I have had but I don’t have that much time. I am a business owner and have had my business for 10 years when I decided to go with Vivint...... that was a big mistake that has cost me hundreds of dollars with all of the broken equipment and the run around!! Stay far way!

Price is high and the contract is long they lock you in for 5 years and the sales person glosses over this and gets you to sign. If you ever need out the will not give you any type of prorated buyout. equipment is fine but not great quality and does not do well if the power goes out, due to short back up battery life.

The real question is if there is anything positive to say about this. It is the worst mistake I have ever made in home ownership. The system has NEVER worked. I was told a lot of things when I signed up over the phone and every single thing was a lie! All of them. After it was installed I was shown features which were also a lie. None of the features work!!!!!! It’s basically all a pretty picture that does nothing. I have spent countless hours on the phone with technical support and gotten nowhere! This company should be investigated and a class action suit brought up against them. I would be happy to sign onto that. It must be illegal what they do to people! Your house will not be secure (sensors don’t work, door camera faulty, front door lock just stops working. Camera is not motion activated I can walk right in front of it and it records nothing....) I can go on and on. Just don’t do it. You will regret it. And please if someone wants to do a class action law suit count me in.

The main reason I signed up with Vivent was to get the camera and recording, as I ship and receive packages from my front porch. The camera has been totally unreliable from the beginning, despite rebooting, numerous calls to Vivent, service tech installation of signal booster, etc. Vivent told me I'm welcome to cancel, but only after I pay off the balance of the system, over the period of the contract, which is well over $1,800. Yes, that's what I was told I would have to pay to cancel. I feel that I should not have to pay to cancel for something that continues not to work. So finally they said they would let me cancel at no cost, but then never got back with me. Meanwhile, the monthly deductions from my checking account continue. And the camera does not work.

Be very careful before you decide to purchase a Vivint Home security system. What the salesperson tells you is different from what the installation technician tells you from what the customer service rep tells you. They appear to be very deceptive or they are very disorganized and don't really have their act together. All they really want is your monitoring service fees and they will tell you anything to get it. I purchase all of their equipment up front with the understanding that I could opt out of monitoring services whenever I didn't need it as explained to be by both the salesperson and the technician. However, when I went to do that I was told by Customer Service that if I did that Vivint would not support my equipment. And if I decided to stop monitoring services and then restart I would have to pay a reactivation fee of $50 which was news to me Also, if I ever had a problem with faulty equipment they would not send a technician to help resolve the problem. The equipment will still work without the monitoring service but the Vivint mobile app would not work without an active monitoring service. The app is really important to the operation of the system so they have you over a barrel. My point -be sure you know what you are getting when you buy the system.

We have been with Vivint for over 5yrs with a contract we have paid for our outdated equipment. I've spoke to people in their loyalty department about lowing our bill now that everything is paid for now they want us to agree to another contract. We have been paying $69.99 for over five years for just monitoring service when new customers pay only $29.99-$49.99 for much equipment. The company does not care about their customers they don't care if we leave even if we where loyal to them. They even said we are paying to much for what we have.

Original sales person lied to us about the service. Customer service ,particularly their customer loyalty department, is in unhelpful on must needs. Contract ended in August. Moved me to month to month without asking ( not in the contract). After sending them 4 emails they have continued to not stop the contract and want to charge me more. This outfit will swendle you any way they can.

3 1/2 year Vivint customer, and almost done w/my 4 year contract! Don’t be fooled by their fancy equipment and theirs initial sales pitch. The system and customer service sucks. I have had so many problems w/this system: not recording motion, not recording at all, goes off line, cameras going black, door sensors not working, disconnecting from WiFi, not updating automatically when it should. And when you call the reps or techs... they have no clue on how to fix. They will run you through a series of test (time consuming!), and it still doesn’t fix the problem. Also, in order to do these test...the reps/tech will have you enter an in-house codes to bypass system. Guess what? I’ve had so many problems w/this system that I already know their codes to bypass system-smh. Save your money! I have purchased additional cams from RING- which work 10 times better and 10 times cheaper w/out the commitment. Don’t get married to Vivint like I did, or you’ll be waiting for the day that the divorce is final like I am!

Had Vivint sense 2011 got into a new contract 2018 was not informed that it was a five-year contract. Also not informed that in that contract items purchase in the beginning of the new five-year contract freezes ( a waiting period) for you to upgrade or add more cameras you have to wait two years before the end of the contract to upgrade and use the payment plan a that’s added to your monthly payment or pay cash up front for the add on items. nonsense.

STAY AWAY!!! This company is ridiculous. First, they make you sign a 5 YEAR contract, which is beyond crazy. Second, if something ever breaks and you need a replacement then you have to pay the $49 service fee to have a technician come out and replace it...every....single....time. Lastly, we deiced to cancel after 6 years (well after our contract ended) and it's not a simple process nor do they tell you all the details. You can't just call and cancel, you have to send an email and then it won't be cancelled for 30 DAYS, yeah you read that right 30 days and you still have to pay the monthly fee for the month that you don't even want their services for and when your service is finally cancelled after 30 days you only get a partial refund of the monthly fee you paid AFTER you cancelled your account. If you cancel something it should be cancelled right away not a whole 30 days later. This company is a joke!

I moved into a house with the set up installed from previous owner. I had to sign up with them to be able to control the thermostat at $42.?? A month to do so. Then I was one the phone with them for 7 hours so they could sign me up but then had me signed onto a different address, now the pad does not lock or lock my doors, it has no idea when they are locked or not. I am definitely not pleased with this company and I would not refure this company. I tried getting ahold of them via Facebook Messenger and they seem the message about the doors but never replied. It won't even register to my phone app like they said it would. On top of that I had to get them to check the signals for fire, police and EMS, when I tried it on the phone with them, ALL emergency response members were contacted and sent to my house. I am currently waiting for the bill of $60 for each emergency response vehicle that showed up...... I JUST WANTED TO CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE HOUSE!
