Vivint Smart Home offers home security, security cameras, and home automation devices for residential homes. Right now, the company has no activation fee. However, if you opt to finance your equipment, you’re locked into a 5-year contract with high monthly fees. Check out Vivint Reviews Below to see what customers are saying about the security provider and post your own review of Vivint.

Pros

Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Customers can use either Vivint’s SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint’s monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint’s app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint’s home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat. For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue – LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint’s 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you’ll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn’t have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint’s 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

  Vivint Protect America Frontpoint
Equipment Upfront $500 - $1800 $0 $69 - $833
Basic Alarm Monitoring $29.99 $19.99 - $41.99 $34.99
Video Monitoring $49.99 $24.99 - $49.99 $49.99
Contract 5-year 3-year 3-year
Installation Professional; $50 - $200 DIY DIY
Customer Rating 1/10 8/10 7/10

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn’t display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website. Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing. In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you’ll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps. In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don’t fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation – which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of. Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews. Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company’s overall score. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront. The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Vivint Home Security and Smart Home Packages

Vivint has various home security solutions (24/7 professional monitoring) with a variety of equipment available. If you use their monitoring services, you will be personally alerted via the Vivint Smart Home app, and if your alarm goes off, their customer service reps will call you and assess your situation before dispatching emergency personnel.

How Much Does Vivint Cost?

Vivint offers three home monitoring packages: one for home security, one for home security and locks, and one for video monitoring. The prices listed below are for monitoring only. Smart Protect: $29.99/month

  • Vivint Smart Home mobile app
  • Alarm – burglary detection
  • Door / window sensor
  • Motion sensor
  • Glass break sensor
  • Smoke / fire sensor
  • Carbon monoxide sensor
  • Flood / water sensor

Smart Protect + Control: $39.99/month

  • Monitors equipment in the Smart Protect package

  • Smart garage door control

Smart Complete: $44.99-49.99/month

If you purchase a video monitoring subscription from Vivint, you can have 30 days of cloud storage for up to four cameras (doorbell camera, outdoor and indoor camera. Add another camera for additional costs. The 30-days includes 24/7 camera footage stored to the Vivint Smart Drive (1TB).

Car Guard

  • Car maintenance reminders
  • Location tracking
  • Tamper alert
  • Sync with your home automation or home security system

How Do I Cancel Vivint?

To cancel your monitoring contract with Vivint, you will need to send in a written request that includes your name, address, and account number. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don’t want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

Does Vivint Offer Solar?

Yes, Vivint Solar operates separately from Vivint Smart Home. Customers may be able to integrate their solar panels with their Vivint Smart Home and manage all from one hub.

42 month contract became a 66 month contract for having it in test mode for two months at the last part of contract. I had 3 months left on contract put the alarm on test mode due to divorce and I wasnt paying for something I wasnt using. Wont end the contract just keep extending it, So if you have a system do not talk to the idiots at the customer service desk I think total they have added 36 months on top of the original 42 month contract. It is good system but if you have bad customer service then the system really doesn’t matter.

I had a Sales rep knock on my door in Houston, Texas his name was Tim Jooste, he said he was a supervisor, and try to convince me to put a sign in my garden planter to advertise for his company. The whole sales pitch was a lie of manipulation to try to “qualify” my home for a an advertising account. To me He was trying to convince me that only 2 homes on the street were being selected. Then he tried to bribe me and buy out my remaining balance of current provider…Illegal to do this and He was a Supervisor…Not a good guy to represent and train other reps to do this . unethical. Unethical. Unethical…

Poor product. Purchased for the camera and the camera does not work. Salesman told us try it for 30 days, we did and want it removed but they told us 10 days. Stuck with it now. Have three holes in my wall from poor installation waiting for them to repair and keep getting the run around. Not happy!

Their equipment gave lots of grief for the first year of our contract. Then they “improved” their computer software and claimed to have lost the billing information for our account. They called and called to get us to pay their bill all the while on line the account showed a balance owing of $0.00. Then finally after about 3 months of promising that a bill would be sent, we received a statement showing an outstanding balance of $139. We sent a check immediately. The account on line reflected the credit and reset to $0.00. A week later the account balance reset to $75. A few days later I received an email indicating that our account was overdue and late payment charges were being applied. The next day we received an automated phone call indicating that we must make arrangements to pay the overdue account balance. I checked on line and discovered that the balance showing was $227. Now one must ask how it is possible for Vivint to deserve to be paid for charges that accumulate so quickly without any bill being sent.

Terrible customer service and policies. All they want is your money. Its very apparent with the contract and how their sales representatives contact you. If I would have been able to do research first I would have never even considered purchasing their product. Many more bad experiences than good.

For the love of all that good and right RUN! Worst customer service, incompetent installers, etc., etc., etc. Problems with system from day 1 which were never resolved. With 8 months left on a 4 year contract we moved and had our system moved to the new house the day before leaving on a 3 week vacation. Someone pushed a wrong button and canceled service to BOTH houses leaving our new home and all our belongings unprotected. 2 1/2 months later we still have no service yet they’re continuing to pull money out of our account and the REP SAYS HE HAS THE FINAL WORD AND WILL NOT STOP STEALING MY MONEY. I’m closing my checking account today to stop them because the bank says that only Vivint can stop it and Vivint refuses. They are thieves, plain and simple. Absolutely the worst.

    Contract is up
Discontinue my month to month service with Vivint due to the lack and disrespectful customer service I received when my entire system has been and still is down for over a month now. I have been a loyal customer for years and while I don’t mind paying for top service equipment ,I refuse to pay for disrespectful customer service and the fact that I am paying for a security system to protect my home and my family that doesn’t even work, and no one at Vivint seemed to care about that but was more concerned about payment of a non working system is beyond me. I wonder why the Service department and billing department never talk to each other. I think you guys need to fix this very important part of your company, the customer should never have to call so many different numbers and repeat the same information to the different departments. I also feel bad for recommending your company to so many family members and friends in the past I hope their experience is not like mind. In the future pay attention to your customers and treat them with the respect and understanding you did when you first talked to them about your system and please fix your systems in a timely manner no one should wait months for system repairs ,and remember the reason why your doing business in the first place ,to help people feel safe in their home, and to that point you have Failed.
If you have any question , although I’m not expecting any communication due to the lack of your customer service ,feel free to contact me. I just hope this reaches someone that can make a difference.

After numerous calls to attempt to cancel my contract because I sold my home and the new owners elected to start a new account, using all the same equipment mind you, and Vivint thinks I should still pay them for 20 months when I no longer have a home with an alarm system in it. That is not what I was told by realtor or vivint customer service. Cant recommend them when they make it so hard when you move or sell your home.

worst company i have ever elected to do business with. Keep in mind in order to use their services you must have a land line and high speed internet.

Any time i need to refer back to history or videos saved, the data is not there. They neglect to let you know that you are only allowed a specific amount of storage, whether you have 1 camera or 4 camera’s, the storage is the same amount.

you call for a service call because two of your four cameras are not working. you specifically advise them that there will not be any tools or a computer for the so called “professional” to utilize while he is there getting paid to do a job, without the appropriate tools. and the first question is , “is there a computer i can use!”

What a joke! and keep in mind you are locked into a contract, but apparently Vivint doesn’t have to provide you with any type of service.

Think twice before you use Vivint.

Have had service 3 years. Had to get lock replaced. Came out fixed in couple of days and even got am additional window contact added that I bought from another site because it was cheaper. Seems like most complaints come from getting out of contract. Like anything read the contract and ask questions up front. Yes you are getting into a yearly plan with this.

What I see as far as complaints are people who don’t understand the word contract, who fail to ask questions, who claim to be swindled and/or taken by sales tactics, so very many people here are complaining they bought it and changed their mind the next day. That’s not the company’s fault.
Our family has had a very positive experience with Vivint. The salesman was straight forward with the pitch, we had everything installed for free, our equipment was free, we paid a reduced activation fee. Our equipment works perfectly, we have had no issues arming or disarming, no accidental set-offs, the cameras work fine and are accessable via the iPhone app. My only complaint is that they worked late into the night to install our system, this was caused because of a camera malfunction, however another tech was in the area with an extra. They answered all our questions, walked us through the features and allowed us to get comfortable with the system before they left. I would recommend Vivint to my friends and family, provided they understand simple terms and concepts.

I would have rated the company a tad bit higher until we had to cancel. If you are military completely stay away from this company. Before signing contract for service we clarified that yes we COULD CANCEL our service if we received military orders and had to PCS. Well the accountamanagers made it extremely challenging to cancel. They wanted us to transfer service even placeing a hold on our account till we would get settled at Ft. Drum. Come to find out they would transfer service for free but it would extend contract another three years. We finally had a supervicor tell us that yes we can cancel send the orders and a cxlation letter to vivint. Waiting to hear back, Most companies we have experienced do not operate this way when it comes to serving a service member. Please do not use Vivint for your sercurity needs unless you want to battle them out of your contract.

HORRIBLE COMPANY! GET AWAY IF YOU CAN! There’s so many things I don’t know where to start.. . I was lied to by the salesman from the get go, both cameras don’t work, 75% of the time the website doesn’t work to review my stuff, the app doesn’t work on my phone, and then there’s the billing OMG! I have been over charged so many times bc they are unable to figure out what the “glitch” is doing to my bill, WTF? I asked them if they could just clear out my whole subscription and start a new and maybe that would help the “glitch” they refused and said they have it under control. Just checked to see if my bill went through properly, ya, over charged AGAIN!!!
DO NOT GO THROUGH THIS COMPANY!!! WISH I HAD READ THESE REVIEWS FIRST. Next thing i’m doing is calling my bank and doing whatever I can to stop them from charging my account!
