Vivint Smart Home offers home security, security cameras, and home automation devices for residential homes. Right now, the company has no activation fee. However, if you opt to finance your equipment, you’re locked into a 5-year contract with high monthly fees. Check out Vivint Reviews Below to see what customers are saying about the security provider and post your own review of Vivint.

Pros

Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Customers can use either Vivint’s SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint’s monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint’s app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint’s home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat. For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue – LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint’s 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you’ll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn’t have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint’s 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

  Vivint Protect America Frontpoint
Equipment Upfront $500 - $1800 $0 $69 - $833
Basic Alarm Monitoring $29.99 $19.99 - $41.99 $34.99
Video Monitoring $49.99 $24.99 - $49.99 $49.99
Contract 5-year 3-year 3-year
Installation Professional; $50 - $200 DIY DIY
Customer Rating 1/10 8/10 7/10

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn’t display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website. Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing. In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you’ll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps. In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don’t fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation – which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of. Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews. Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company’s overall score. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront. The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Vivint Home Security and Smart Home Packages

Vivint has various home security solutions (24/7 professional monitoring) with a variety of equipment available. If you use their monitoring services, you will be personally alerted via the Vivint Smart Home app, and if your alarm goes off, their customer service reps will call you and assess your situation before dispatching emergency personnel.

How Much Does Vivint Cost?

Vivint offers three home monitoring packages: one for home security, one for home security and locks, and one for video monitoring. The prices listed below are for monitoring only. Smart Protect: $29.99/month

  • Vivint Smart Home mobile app
  • Alarm – burglary detection
  • Door / window sensor

  • Carbon monoxide sensor
  • Flood / water sensor

Smart Protect + Control: $39.99/month

If you purchase a video monitoring subscription from Vivint, you can have 30 days of cloud storage for up to four cameras (doorbell camera, outdoor and indoor camera. Add another camera for additional costs. The 30-days includes 24/7 camera footage stored to the Vivint Smart Drive (1TB).

Car Guard

  • Car maintenance reminders
  • Location tracking
  • Tamper alert
  • Sync with your home automation or home security system

How Do I Cancel Vivint?

To cancel your monitoring contract with Vivint, you will need to send in a written request that includes your name, address, and account number. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don’t want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

Does Vivint Offer Solar?

Yes, Vivint Solar operates separately from Vivint Smart Home. Customers may be able to integrate their solar panels with their Vivint Smart Home and manage all from one hub.

I have nothing but good to say about them. My system never had a problem. I had extremely fast response time and always good customer service. The only thing I am not crazy about is the length of the contract and it’s in readability. Becomes a problem if you have to move in muddle and cannot take system with you. If they would make change to that or at least let you go month to month when contract period over I would give highest review

DO NOT EVER USE VIVINT! The customer service is horrible when you call in or when they send people door to door. I live in Eastern Washington and cannot believe this company is still in business. Had several issues with my go control panel and motion sensors. A tech came out and told me that i caused the panel problems then fixed the issue with tape and super glue. A motion sensor broke and i was told vivint wouldnt fix it unless i paid for a tech to come out. Even when i asked to have the service fee waved because i was going to pay for $100.00 in upgrades i was told no and hung up on. If you renew your contract dont expect vivint to bring anything up to date. I cant even get them to fix sensors or upgrade the panel without paying for it. This company needs to have a D or F rating for how horrible they are. Once my contract ends i am switching to a better company then Vivint.

I was a Vivint customer for two years before I sold my house. It’s true that I learned of them through a sales rep that knocked on my door. I am glad I took the time to listen to him. The company was nothing less than steller in their customer service in regards to my contract. I never had issues with my alarm. It was very easy to use and the mobile app was awesome. I have nothing but good things to say about this company.

DO NOT USE VIVINT!!! They came to my door selling me one thing and did not put what they were supposed to. My home was not protected so they came back and installed what they said they would. THen they did not put the smoke detector so they had to come back for that!! Nothing works right, and i keep getting kicked out of the website and always get errors. On the initial set up the two cameras were left on the floor plugged in!! I have to install the cameras myself. The front keypad does not work my kids have to call me to unlock even though it unlocks it says errors. I tried to cancel and they did not let me brake the lease. I did not even sign the contract!! They are not educated on the new panel and cannot answer any questions!! the worse thing everything uses plugs. My plugs are all used up and i have to pay an electrician to come and hard wire the system. OH and worse of all they put the contract under my sons name after i was told he was on there only to call in if needed to ask questions. He is the account holder. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!! IT IS A RIP OFF> you end up paying 5,000. for the system!!!

Do not use this company. I tried to cancel my service they said there is nothing they can do because I signed a contract for 60 months. They said I can get out of it by giving my contract to someone in the country to take over and that is the only way to get out of it. They are very dishonest people from the get go. Their customer service sucks with a 45 min wait while transferring you to four different people in the process. Do not use these people they will screw you so bad.

Nice system. Horrible support in Florida.

Our system was installed on 3/15/2014 and we did like the updated look compared to our older ADT system. However, the system stopped working and the support has been horrible.

4/8/14 – System stopped working. Called Vivint and was told scheduling would call in 48 hours.

4/11/14 – No call from scheduling so we called them after about 40 minutes of hold time the rep got us an appointment for the tech to come out in two weeks. I told them two weeks was unacceptable, but did not have any option.

4/25/14 – Tech did not show up. I called Vivint and they did have the appointment at HQ, but it was not on the tech’s schedule. I was told that they put it as a priority 1 (not sure if that is the correct phrase they used) and that scheduling would have a tech out to our house the next day.

4/26/14 – I called late afternoon since scheduling had not called me and they said that scheduling will call in 48 hours.

4/29/14 – No call from scheduling and when we called them they said that we are priority 1 and that a tech would most likely not be out for two weeks.

4/29/14 UPDATE – scheduling called and earliest appointment was 5/19. I do not have any confidence this company will deliver. In addition, what does this mean for their security monitoring services?

I feel like such a fool going into a contractual relationship with a company that has no back end support and is obviously in expansion mode only in Florida. I am definitely dedicating some time to put my negative review everywhere I can to protect other potential customers.

Vivint is comprised of a bunch of liars. I was lied to regarding the cost. I was lied to regarding a savings from my insurance company. I was lied to regarding the delay in obtaining a certificate for my insurance company. I was lied to regarding energy savings.
I would not recommend them to anyone.

Think VERY CAREFULLY before signing a contract with this company. They send people door to door and talk the unsuspecting into signing long contracts. We were NOT offered a trial period. We already had an alarm system that worked (for the most part), but they were offering a medical pendant for an elderly person or sick person to wear around their neck. I figured that this would offset the extra cost for this system. The problem is the pendant can set off the alarm if the person is wearing it to bed and rolls over and lies on it! It happened 2 or 3 times because it is such a poor setup!! I ended up having to put it inside one of
those small tubular things you wear around your neck when you go to the beach or wherever. It has a screw on top and I just hope if my husband needs to use it if I am not home, that he remembers HOW to get it out and use it!! When I called the fellow who sold me the unit and who told me to call him anytime if I needed something, HE NEVER RETURNED THE CALL!! NO surprise there especially after reading so many complaints. I then called the company about it and the man on the phone simply hung up on me (I was not yelling or cursing or ANYTHING like that). I guess he just didn’t want to hear it so he simply hung up on me!! So, yes, I can say their customer service STINKS!! I have used them now for almost a year and still have another 2-1/2 yrs on their contract! I HATE that!!! As soon as I can get rid of them I will!!!! I don’t feel this company is worth the extra price and their contracts are FAR TOO LONG!! They wanted to sign me up for 5 years and I refused, so they gave me 3-1/2. I still think that is TOO LONG to be in a contract when you don’t feel the company is worth
    it!!!!

I have had Vivint for 3 Years now and love every bit of it! I have had several times when I needed to let someone into my house, to check on something or grab something and it is so convenient to let them in from my phone. The Response time is amazing and the service has been impeccable. I have reffered this company to many friends and will continue to do so. People any company has contract lengths if you get part of the equipment for FREE seriously. I got what I was told and told everything up front, the rep even stopped back by the next day to make sure I understood everything!! Love this company! They are quick and Amazing service!

Had switched from another company to vivint they didn’t finish the installation so nothing worked. The installer said he was coming back next day several days later he texted me to call customer service to finish installation. They were rude and UNABLE to come for several weeks. Also wanted to charge me fees for finishing the install which I had already paid a $99 fee already. Extremely difficult company to deal with. I called my old company and they were great to help cancel my contract with vivint. Beware of this company and read the fine print in their contract. You get 3 days to cancel. Luckily they never finished my install or it would have been a $5000.00 cancellation fee. Glad to be done with this company even though I had to clean up big mess in my home from him and ask the headache and hassle this company is not worth it!

Well, I have been paying into this company for nearly 3 years now and I am not a happy camper. A few times I have had a call from a representative asking about my evaluation of the system…. I tell them about the darn thing off at the darndest times enraging my husband who simply didn’t know how to operate it. I asked when someone could come look at it and nearly two has passed and no one came, I also unplugged the darn thing due to it ringing off whenever it chose to…. truly annoying. So…. my question is when is the Vivant Co coming to claim their system or perhaps a 2 year minimum refund…. at the least …. as it appears you have no problem removing my money from me , leaving me without an alarm . While there only two points of installation I still feel that you guys owe me. I will be taking this to the better business beaureau and place a post on facebook within a5 days if I don’t see any off er to fix the system or refund my money. Thanks for nothing .

I don’t feel they should go off ur creit score. It should just be a fee of 99.00 and the monthly fee. They r not looking out on your safety but more on how much they can charge you if your credit score is no up to there standards. People are having rough times these but also need to have a peace of mind. A Rep told me it would be 400.00 deposit and if I didn t want it now, then wait until my credit score can go up in a couple of months and call back. I might be dead then….. REALLY

I had vivint, they use the 2GIG panel, simply put their name on it and pretend its theirs.

I kicked them to the curb, sent legal depth my NOC letter, switched out the cellular module, and went with suretycam. No contract, month to month, I pay $27/month and have image sensors, geo fence, home automation (zwave sirens, lights, locks, outlets, tstat), and 5 diamond CSAA rated central station that is better rated than Vivint’s For $5 more (for a total of $32) you can get up to 5 indoor/outdoor alarm.com cameras….. everything vivant charges $80 for. Plus I get the new motion detectors with built in cameras (image sensors), and geo fence location which vivant doesn’t let its customers even have.

I started a website to show others how to do it, and get everything they need for their panel.

after signing up with Apex in 2008, through their name change to Vivint, the service provided was minimal at best. In an event, a computerized message was received on the telephone and then after confirming that all was well nothing, never a human voice or any other form of contact. Choosing to cancel in Jan 2014, I have been harassed by several individuals refusing to accept my cancellation even after sending e-mails and numerous calls. The staff can never talk correctly umming and ahhring instead of actually talking. They are a rubbish company who cannot accept the fact that there other companies out there giving equal or in most cases better service. They need to learn to take no for an answer!!

Techs, 3 of them, bullied their way into our house when my husband opened the door. They said they were with our current provider and needed to update the service. We had not requested them or anyone else as we were satisfied with our current company. It was 6:30pm and we were getting ready to go to the funeral home (my cousin had passed away). I told them to come back another time and asked them to leave. One of them raced toward me and wrote down $800 and a telephone number. He shouted that if we don’t do it now while they are in this area, that I need to call that number to get it scheduled and it would cost me $800. He said one way or another it would be done, so my husband let them replace the main panel. The next day after my husband had signed the contract, I was looking over it and realized it was Vivint and not my current one. We were unable to get out of it. However, I must say I have been satisfied with the service and features. They also keep increasing the monthly fee when I start using any of the features that should be included-not happy about that. The fee is almost twice the fee of the previous service.
