Pros

Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Customers can use either Vivint’s SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint’s monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint’s app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint’s home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat. For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue – LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint’s 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you’ll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn’t have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint’s 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

  Vivint Protect America Frontpoint
Equipment Upfront $500 - $1800 $0 $69 - $833
Basic Alarm Monitoring $29.99 $19.99 - $41.99 $34.99
Video Monitoring $49.99 $24.99 - $49.99 $49.99
Contract 5-year 3-year 3-year
Installation Professional; $50 - $200 DIY DIY
Customer Rating 1/10 8/10 7/10

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn’t display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website. Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing. In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you’ll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps. In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don’t fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation – which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of. Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews. Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company’s overall score. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront. The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Vivint Home Security and Smart Home Packages

Vivint has various home security solutions (24/7 professional monitoring) with a variety of equipment available. How Do I Cancel Vivint?

To cancel your monitoring contract with Vivint, you will need to send in a written request that includes your name, address, and account number. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don’t want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

Does Vivint Offer Solar?

Yes, Vivint Solar operates separately from Vivint Smart Home. Customers may be able to integrate their solar panels with their Vivint Smart Home and manage all from one hub.

So far so good, the tech did a good job explaining the system. He checked all sensors and all seemed to meet his standards. The install went smooth. But I can not believe the equipment needs to be returned upon cancellation, that is a darn poor move on their part. They ought to consider after the initial contact, equipment upgrades and reduced monthl rate since over the contact period the equipment was paid for, just like your cellphone agreement. Time will tell if the system will be worth it, just hope it does not have to be demanded in a timely response.

I am VERY UNSATISFIED with my Vivint system and the service they provide, rather lack of service. I had a system installed around 3 weeks ago just before my family went on an international trip for a couple of weeks. First off when we had the system installed they did not come out with enough working cameras or a properly working front door lock and they still have not fixed that. They also left wood chips and a glass they had broken in our carpet without cleaning it up. We weren’t initially very concerned with these problems as we just handled the clean up ourselves and trusted that the improper equipment would be handle when we got back. The door would lock but not work on the app so we were fine with that. But then the bigger problems began. When we got back state side we checked our thermostat on the app and realized that our house was at 52 degrees so we reset the target temp to 75 to try to get the temp up. 2-3 hours later we get home and it is still at 52 degrees. So we called Vivint and told them what was happening and they went through a couple things on the phone to see if there was an easy fix. There was not and they proceeded to try to schedule a technician to come out and fix it. But when they tried to schedule the technician they said they couldn’t get anyone out here until the 26th, not for 6 DAYS! I told them that was unacceptable, I have a jet lagged 18 month old and a pregnant wife, not to mention holiday gatherings in that time and if they couldn’t get someone out here faster than that then I would need to take matters into my own hands and I would like them to cancel my subscription. They asked for a little time to try to line something up and said they would call back in the afternoon. I waited and waited with no call back. Finally once the night came I called an HVAC conctractor and he was here within an hour and a half. He figured out that Vivint wired the thermostat wrong when they installed it. He fixed it in about an hour and was gone. I did not receive a call back from Vivint until today, 2 DAYS LATER! I told the guy at Vivint that I didn’t need them to send anyone out but rather wanted to cancel my subscription and have them pick up their equipment and refund my money that I paid to have it installed. The representative on the phone named Brian got a big attitude with me and told me that it was going to be nearly $3000 TO CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION!! He argued that it was around the holidays, they were understaffed and I needed to understand that. I told him that that’s fine but that just means I need to find a company that has the staffing necessary to provide the service that is expected with a security and home automation company and that I did not feel I should have to pay nearly $3000 to cancel a service that they are not equipped to properly provide. He said he could not change it and I asked him if there was a superior I could speak with and he said no.

I am very unsatisfied with this company. DO NOT USE THEM, they are unprofessional and unreliable And when they do make a mistake they do not own up to it and make it right.

I’ve had the system for over 2 1/2 years now, and it home automation has been convenient…when it works properly. Often my thermostat settings don’t change when their supposed to, and even cycling through the heat/cool button to make sure it’s on schedule (there is no schedule status on thermostat), it still often does not ensure it’s on schedule, and I have to go on the internet to FORCE it back. Also my lighting automation does not turn off some lamps at times, and I’ll come down in the morning to see them still on.

Once, my son went to the garage to throw out the cat litter, and set the alarm off accidentally. I came down and turned it off, but no one ever responded through the panel speaker. I went to bed and checked my messages the next morning. The alarm happened about 10:30pm, and they called to ask if everything was ok at 1:30am….three hours later…really? I’m definitely done after contract, but as I was going through my payment history, I noticed they double charged me one month about 2 years ago, and I didn’t catch it. How much do you want to bet they will use that as a way to auto renew my contract for another year before I would have normally mailed my cancellation letter, locking me in for another 12 months? I’ll make I get it in early.

I rate Vivint at zero. They preyed on my wife by lying to her about contract terms Definitely a predatory company. I tried unsuccessfully to resolve the issues. After numerous harassing calls from their fictitious Joyce Black , I will make good on my promise to take legal action against them, including filing a class action suit. I can guarantee you that they survey these sites. That is good, because the class action suit is coming.

They have some of the sneakiest sales tactics. They tell you your neighbours sign up when they haven’t, they say the install guy will be here in 20 minutes when they aren’t, they are overpriced and they provide absolutely no customer services. I called twice about cancelling and instead of them trying to please the costumer by giving me a better rate are at the least, tell me to request cancellation with a written letter, they simply gave me their legal departments e-mail. On top of that all, we were still being monitored with our previous company they informed us of an alarm incident for which we heard nothing about from vivint.
Only in Canada can a scam be called ‘legal’.

I have had my Vivint home automation system for almost a year and I love it! The convenience is awesome. I love being connected to my home even when I am out of town or away. It is so easy to be able to control my lights or thermostats from my phone. The energy savings I have received from the programmable thermostat is amazing. I also love that I can check the cameras at anytime so I know what is going on when I am away. I set the alarm and sleep soundly every night because I know I am protected. A great system and I highly recommend it every chance I get!

I love our Vivint system. My husband and I are away at work most of the day, so it is nice to know that Vivint has us covered when we are away. It also relieves the stress of having to check the house when I come home at night because I know our home is monitored and we are protected. Saves us money on our home owners insurance and utilities. The equipment and technology is so much better than our last company. Totally worth it!

Had this company for a year and then had to cancel. Very poor service and company, spent countless hours over the phone with the company. Payed off a 3 year bill for the only year that I used it because there was no way out of the contract. Then about 1.5 years later the company starts charging my bill again. I had signed the document to have them stop the service and then they start to automatically withdrawal my money. How is that even legal?

I had a Vivint system installed (security and home automation) about two months ago. We have loved all aspects of it. My wife and I can go out on a date and check in on the kids by accessing the cameras via the app. We also like that we can arm the system remotely from our car. Once, we did accidentally forget to disarm the system in the morning as my kids were heading out to school and the alarm went off. We quickly disarmed it, but the cool thing was, I received a call within a minute from Vivint asking me if everything was OK. Awesome service.

I have had the original alarm system for 6 years. One day, Vivint called me up and told me I had a lot of upgrades if I renewed my contract. I was very pleased with the company and the offer so I renewed. They gave me a new Go-pad another motion detector for the hallway, two more sensors for doors, and our smoke detector. They threw in the smoke detector monitoring for no extra cost.(Which by the way, the insurance company gave us a break on our home owner insurance for having monitored smoke alarms.) All of that was free. So one other benefit if you could call it that, I lost my job just before we came out of contract. I wanted to pause my monitoring service till I found another job. Because we were under contract they would not do that. However, they did reduce my monthly monitoring fee by almost half for 3 months. I’m sure they would have done it for another 3 months, but I did not need it. Finally, I like this company. I like the equipment. I like the service. I like the flexibility. I really like controlling my alarm system from my smart phone. I give them a 9 cause nothing is perfect.

The Las Vegas sales person was up front with me about the contract terms and cancellation process, if it should happen. The installers were friendly and went above and beyond in order to figure out the appropriate wiring for the thermostat, which was unique in a new house, compared to other installs. The team genuinely wanted to meet my needs, and nor did I feel the sales person tried to push items on me that I did not need.

I just had the system installed on 1 Aug so I can’t give a fair rating at this time. Since the house came prewired, the installation took less than 3 hours for the install Tech to remove my old Alarm System and wire in the new equipment. He was very polite and explained everything to me as he installed it. Besides the main “GO’ Pad, I also had 2 other keypads installed at entry doors. I noticed that the key pads did not show the status of the alarm system, and that certainly was not going to work for me. I contacted Customer Service during my trial period, and explained the my frustration and problem with the keypads. BLUF, I was unhappy with the keypads and ready to go back to my old Alarm Company. The customer service Rep was very understanding, and offered to replace one of the keypads (my choice) with the mini “GO” (TS1) pad for free. I felt like that was a fair offer and accepted. The Rep was also kind enough to overnight the TS1 pad to the installer, which he promptly installed the next day. I was very pleased with the Customer service Rep and installation Tech. Like Theresa, I hope I never have to use the system, but if I do, I hope their equipment and response time is as good as they say it is.

CAN NOT rate at this time, just installed on 7/29/13. However, I hope and pray, based on reviews that I have just read that we will not experience any of the issues that other customers have shared on your site. TRUE, they did not clean their mess and we were not OFFERED a trial period. I will/would not hesitate to discontinue our service in the future if we ever encounter any problems. Hopefully, there will never be an incident where we will have to utilize the equipment. NOTE: I, also did read some POSITUVE reviews. . . Written by John, Theresa’s husband of 18 years.

I tried out Vivints security system for the trial period and decided it wasn’t for me and my family. When I decided this and contacted them to discontinue the service they were rude. when they came to remove the tech. was rude to my wife and father that lives with me as well as didn’t put the cover back on the outlet the equipment was tied into when we have 5 kids in our house hold with the youngest being 2 years old. Never again will I use this service or recommend them to another person.

Horrible experience in Conway, AR. I had another Alarm System that was fully functional but since I was on a month-to-month basis I let the door-to-door rep talk me into switching. Took installers over 12 hours (performed on 3 consecutive evenings) to complete switchover, they left my home phone line disconnected and I had to call AT&T to have that repaired, left cosmetic damage that needed repaired.

Vivant is a predatory company using poorly disclosed long-term contract terms to take advantage of consumers. Salesman lied about cancellation terms. I negotiated and settled with the company 1-year later. After another year they hired a collection agency to collect the original amount. I cannot wait for class action lawyers to pursue action here as they did with cellular carriers abusing long-term contract cancellation terms. Do your self a favor – go with a local company that doesn’t lie to you.

I was draw to Vivint because of the cellular system used instead of land line. The salesman promised that all the equipment installed would have the same features as that old CPI system had. However, this turned out to be untrue, the keypads in the bedroom and at the exit to garage does not indicate the status of the system so the alarm goes off often because I cannot see or hear the alarm or see the status, the central console is to far away. Since they won’t make it right, I will be shopping another system when the contract ends. I don’t like companies that renege on their promises.
