Pros

Vivint SmartHome Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

Month-to-Month Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

High Equipment + Monthly Monitoring Costs

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you’ll notice between Vivint and Protect is 1) Upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn’t have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint’s 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

  Vivint Protect America Frontpoint
Equipment Upfront $500 - $1800 $0 $69 - $833
Basic Alarm Monitoring $29.99 $19.99 - $41.99 $34.99
Video Monitoring $49.99 $24.99 - $49.99 $49.99
Contract 5-year 3-year 3-year
Installation Professional; $50 - $200 DIY DIY
Customer Rating 1/10 8/10 7/10

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out the Vivint smart home reviews and home security reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you. A common complaint customers have is customer service. Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices, long contract, and slow technician response times. Unlike other review sites, BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com does not allow companies to pay to remove reviews. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don’t want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

Vivint is useless and a waste of money. We have a home in the city and a home at the lake. They have both systems so messed up that I just got an alarm email for our garage in the city and a phone call for the alarm being at the garage at the lake. Nobody can tell me which alarm it really is because They don’t even have the verbal passcodes for these two systems wrong. We have spent countless hours on the phone, over email and with technicians in our home over months trying to rectify Vivint’s mix up with no success. They talk to us like we are the idiots and do not know where we live. DO NOT GO WITH THIS USELESS ALARM SYSTEM.

I really felt pressured to buy this system. I was told someone would come out to evaluate my security needs but he turned out to be the installer. After spending quite a while on the phone I let them install a basic system and paid upfront. It’s been a year and monitoring has gone up $5/month to $45. It’s too much for my needs and now I own a panel that I can’t monitor remotely. Should have looked into it more before I bought this but at least I’m not stuck with it for 5 years.

From day 1- a pushy salesperson who asked personal questions about if I lived in my home alone to where I worked. A Tech then shows up to do the installation and is still walking around my home at 11pm at night unscrewing my door knobs. He put an unnecessary hole in my new home wall, walked around aimlessly, then couldn’t finish the installation, promised to come back the next day and then couldn’t, came back eventually and wanted to put more holes in my wall (that was never the understanding of what was going to happen) I literally was so worked up about all the walking up and down the stairs and moving around aimlessly. Customer service is a complete joke and worthless on all points. I wish to God I had never allowed this company in my home. This is been a nightmare that I would rather do without living.

Terrible customer service. They don’t care about the customer at all. I was called man multiple times during my last call and had to ask for everything very specifically because they didn’t offer any service at all.
Never follow up when they say they will.
Never follow through with promises without a fight and aren’t worth anyone time or money.
If you want to be taken advantage of for 100 bucks a month and treated like crap, there’s always tinder.

    Things the salesman lied about:
-No upfront costs only a monthly service fee
    -7-day trial period
-Products have built in 4G connectivity

    Here is the truth:
    -They charge $1300 up front
-The trial period is a 3-day trial period
-Products draw on your home wifi

If you contact customer service they will be extremely rude and will not help you and make the cancellation process extremely lengthy and difficult. Please do not sign anything with this company

From the start I began having problems. i.e 1/2019. up to this very day 7.30.2019 the service is extremely poor. There are sporadic days when I am able to view some activity. Not a reliable system. It is garbage. I am tired calling for help. I was never provided a copy of the contract even with multiple requests. And vivint would not let out of this contract, Even with such poor performance. How are they allowed to continue in business?. This is TERRIBLE. Worse service provider ever.

First of all the installation was a nightmare. The installer didn’t turn the power off and shocked himself. He also put holes in the walls. He didn’t put the cover plate on level and when I said something he said it doesn’t need to be level, uhm yes it does. He also managed to turn the furnace off creating all kinds of confusion as to why the heat wasn’t working. The salesman told us he would give us the first three months free because of the hassle. We never got those 3 months free, Vivent customer service said they can’t honor those sorts of promises. The system itself is spotty, the garage door has never worked. The video works sometimes but the door chime rarely works. Customer service is useless. We pulled the thermostat plate off to replace it and low and behold there is a huge hole in the wall where the installer broke the drywall. The hole is the size of a lemon. The vivent thermostat plate just covered it. What a joke! Let the patching begin. The whole experience has not been good. I would never recommend this service to anyone. It’s total crap and the customer service is worse. Go with someone else. Vivent is a nightmare and total waste of money!!

From a customer service stand point they always blame things on your network its NEVER their hardware. and if you door bell breaks or falls off they blame you, 2nd : there is No transparency, i am on a month to month monitoring at 49.00 which we dont use. i asked about cancelling , and it seems the app use is tied to the monitoring, (if course i was never told that during the shoddy sales tactic, also if i want to do areneal ( 2 yr agreement ) they will knock 15.00 a month off right way, WTF , so you have that much headroom of profits , sleezy, the system is decent, but everything else is about THEM NOT THE CUSTOMER, its like talking to a bad used car salesman, and they really are all about 28 yrs old. No cluse probably most of them its their 1st job. ….this company sucks to deal with. !!! period

Was approved by sales person who woke me up out of my sleep and talked me into buying a alarm system to find out everything she told me was a lie and I was billed for $1200 dollars when I was told that I would be paying monthly on a two year contract for $39.99 monthly and I called customer services and they did nothing to make things right

I would NOT recommend Vivint! Salesmen are very misleading about cancellations and service! I was told I could cancel monitoring any time and just keep paying for equipment. I was not told I had to pay for equipment in full to cancel! Also, you do NOT have phone access any longer once ministering service is cancelled! Plus, equipment is a little pricy!

Vivint has installers with no knowledge of what they are doing. Then I had a problem with equipment that was designed poorly & did not work properly. Their only solution was for me to pay again for the same equipment. That’s not going to happen. I’ll change companies when contract is up.

Vivínt is definitely the worst company I have ever been a customer of. They required a contract of 3.5 years that was impossible to get out of, depite the fact that the system never worked correctly and I had so many false alarms that the police were going to charge me to come to my house. Not to mention I was woken up in the middle of the night innumerable times by the alarm going off for no reason (which gave me incredible anxiety and woke my sleeping infant in more than one occasion). The terrible system gave me more anxiety and made my life more difficult, despite the fact that the goal was to do the opposite. I called on several occasions wanting to cancel, but was always told I had to pay out my contract. So I did. But once my contract was up they continued my charging me as if my contract had been renewed. I called to cancel again. Was told I had to send in a written request. So I did. I was still charged, so I began disputing their claims on my credit card, so my card would no longer accept their charges. And now I am receiving bills in the mail. This company is nothing but a leech offering an inadequate system but refusing to allow you to stop using it/stop paying them money. I have huge regrets about the day I choose to go with this company. I have consistently begged their customer service for a refund as the system never worked, yet all I keep getting is more charges for a system I haven’t used in years and am no longer contracted to. Don’t make the same mistake I did!!!!

Well, we bought Vivint years with no monitoring years ago from Best Buy. Now Best Buy is no longer selling Vivint. So now I get charged 21.95 a month just to use their app to self monitor. There is no way out of this. If I would have known this could happen I would have never purchased Vivint. Our only other option is to pay their 39.00 a month for monitoring. That’s what we originally didn’t want to do! Sucks and seems so unfair!!

Very dissatisfied with Vivint Security Systems! They increase their monthly charges (I pay $66.00/month- that’s almost $800/year). The thermostats are horrible- have had a defective one installed as well. Once the thermostat malfunctioned- instead of AC the heat pump turned on- I could not correct it. Had to leave work & have my AC tech try to figure it out!

The security panel system needs to be updated & it is always signaling that there are issues (battery problems, updates needed, etc.). Again, on the phone to try to solve the issues. Oh, and they charge a $49 service fee to come out & change your batteries!

The cameras have never worked right, even though they have come to replace them. Then they wanted to charge me $150 to replace the camera that did not work. I spend so much time with tech support trying to “reset the panel” etc….. Not to mention waiting 10 -15 minutes being put on hold!

Then, I finally decided to end my contract, they said that I was automatically renewed for 2 more years. They had me over a barrel, because I needed to schedule an AC company to change out the vivint thermostat, but could not get them over until after my contract ended.
I live in Florida & it is 95 degrees here right now- I would not have been able to use my AC without a thermostat.

Panel and cameras continually go off line. I just spent 4 1/2 hours on line with a CS, because I was told that I had to follow his instructions before they would send a tech out to my house at no charge. If I wanted one to come out prior to that, I would have to pay $49.

So 4 1/2 hours later and my system is still down, but an actual human tech can’t come to my house for four days. I wonder if I can sue Vivint if something happens to my property, family or pets, while their crappy system is down.

I’ve only had this system less than 24 hours and I HATE IT!!!!
First it’s currently 8:34 a.m the tech came to my house at 9:00 pm last night to install the equipment! Drilled this tacky hole in my house and messed up my theromstat which I wanted to exclude that part of the equipment because I just paid A LICENSED HEATING ANG COOLING TECH to put in a new one. These ppl are not licensed to install theromstats. My house is hot as crap but the thermostat says 70°….. bullcrap I know what 70° feels like. PPL LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS DO NOT GET!!
