The Good

  • Solid Home Automation Features
  • No Upfront Fees
  • Variety of Security Equipment

Solid Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

No Upfront Fees

Unlike many home security companies, Vivint does not charge any upfront fees for its security systems. This makes signing up for Vivint’s services more affordable. This can also provide peace of mind to potential customers that they don’t have to put down a hefty down payment in order to receive Vivint’s security services.

Variety of Security Equipment

Vivint has various home security solutions with a variety of equipment available. Depending on your home security package, offered equipment will vary, but Vivint has multiple security plans to choose from. Some of Vivint’s offered security equipment and smart home products include:

  • Doorbell Camera
  • Outdoor Camera with Night Vision
  • Indoor Camera
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Smart Door Locks
  • Motion Sensors
  • Motion Detectors
  • Panic Pendant
  • Garage Door Opener
  • Vivint Smartphone App
  • Smart Light Switches

The Bad

  • High Monthly Monitoring Fees
  • 60-Month Contract
  • Customer Service Complaints
  • Negative Vivint Reviews
  • Moving Fee May Apply

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up based on a variety of additional package options. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Customer Service Complaints

Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices and slow technician response times. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Moving Fee May Apply

If you want a Vivint specialist to remove your home security system, you have to pay a fee $129. However, if you opt to remove the equipment yourself, the fee may not apply. Vivint suggests looking through the SkyControl instructions to remove correctly. You also have to pay an additional fee of $129 to reinstall the equipment into your new location.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out Vivint reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you.

Protect American has the highest customer rating on our site.

The Bottom Line

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. We recommend more affordable options that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Once my contract is up I will cancel my Vivint Security system and go with another company. First, I do not like that I have to keep this contact for four years. Second, I am tired of the panel constantly needing to be rebooted and it will cancel the alarm when it is on. Trying to reboot from my phone does not work because it cuts off. This system has so many flaw. The company told me my panel was old, but they won’t replace it. CAN’T WAIT FOR THE CONTRACT TO BE UP!

Dear everyone. DONT USE THIS HORRIBLE SYSTEM. Long story short it’s truly the WORRRRST system I’ve ever used. These overpriced cameras don’t work. Sensors fell off the door setting my alarm off in the middle of the night. Tech took my old security equipment with him without my permission and vivint is not taking responsibility for that. I’ve had alarms on my homes for a decade and I’ve never experienced something so bad. DON’T BUY INTO THIS.

It looks like a great product and it works with my smart home stuff but it’s just not reliable enough. I just don’t trust it I was with T&T and they would call me In a matter of seconds if the alarm went off all wether alerts would go through the system too. I live in Oklahoma lots of crazy whether here and I have never got a whether alerts through Vivint just a few days ago a notice I haven’t got a alert from my door bell Camara I went to verify and it was off line I have no clue how long it has been this way it’s T&T was just more simple and it works every time.i have about 4 more years with Vivint and I will go somewhere else

Vivint is the worst when it comes to customer service “out of the ordinary. They say they have a “smooth” moving package but they lie. We moved from NC to AR and we have had nothing but problems. Not only did the installer install the lock keyboard crooked, he forgot the doorbell camera and said he would have to get another one. Well, after a week of hearing nothing, we called only to find out an order was never made,. Then, because the installer is only in the area on certain days, we must now wait another THREE weeks to get a doorbell camera installed… so much for “smooth.”

Vivint sales rep came to my house selling an upgraded security system. I was assured my current contacts and sensors would be usable, just needed their alarm pad and the various cameras and “extras” I chose. After the installation, they said my sensors would not work, and t I could just buy their wireless sensors. I told them I was not going to buy any additional sensors and they should send there tech to get the system up and running. That was 4 days ago, No one has called or attempted to make any repairs. I have had to call them and was told they couldn’t come on Saturday because that was a busy installation day. –What total disrespect to the customer they just signed. I have now cancelled the entire contract and it will be another 3 days before they can send someone to get there equipment. Do yourself a favore and STAY AWAY!!!

I am Vivint customer for few years now. I was stupid enough trust them with my home security system. ITS NEVER WORKS PROPERLY. I spent tons of my own time and money for nothing. One sensor not working and after hours on line troubleshooting and few tech. visits this problem was solved, but start different one and I am still unable to use the system. I want to get rid of them but I have a contract and have to pay money for orange sign on my front loan at least this part operating properly. Initial installation was done wrong , they use the sensor from old system and b.s. me for years about software problem it was just old and outdated sensor. Now I have different problem .I don’t even know what to say. Tomorrow I will go to their office in Calgary and try to find some local boss , they are just hiding behind the service tech. and phone service . Will see what he will say ………

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE experience! I have been a customer for over a decade. I agreed to get an upgrade to my system. Installer was 2 hours late, didn’t have all the equipment needed, and said he didn’t know how to fix my sensors. I contacted Vivint to let them know the problem. The “inconvenience” cost me several things having spent over 7 hours total on Saturday just waiting and installing my upgrade. They did nothing about it. Nothing to make it right! Their website says: “We’re committed to creating amazing experiences for our customers every day. If we’ve fallen short of your expectations in any way, we want to hear about it.” BUT WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT! They need Chic-Fil-A customer service training. 😠

Do not get Vivint as your home security option. I have the system for two years now and regretting ever letting the salesperson in my house. Nothing but equipment failures. Within first three months, one camera failed to connect and since then works only sometimes after Vivint installed a repeater (it is 20 feet from the panel, apparently that’s too far). Thermostat could be controlled from the phone app for almost a year, now that option doesn’t work for over a year. Vivint offers to fix things for a fee by sending someone. Well it didn’t work with the camera even after I paid so I’m not throwing any extra money at them. Devices sometimes report failures (battery low, door unlocked) which are not present and it usually requires the whole control panel reset (takes 15 minutes to reboot, slowest linux-based system ever). I opted for 24/7 video recording but playback of that video doesn’t work at times.

We had a door to door sales person come to our house to sell us this system . My wife and I have thought about a alarm so we decided to give it a try. We thought there financing was kinda high so we decided to not have them give us a “free” system but opted to buy all the equiptment our self and have them do the monitoring. I do not like contracts and feel if someone wants to put you into a 3 year contract there is a reason. They explained to me that the contract was to cover the equiptment and since wee bought ours we would n ot be in a contract. So we agreed to go ahead with the transaction. I made sure we wasn’t in a contract and they wrote it on the receipt that we had that there is no contract and we was free to cancel anytime we wanted to since we bought the stuff outright which was about $$2000 up front. Everything was fine for 2 years until we moved. I called Vivint to tell them we was moving and to cancel our serives, they said I had to send it in writing so I did that and didn’t think much about it. Until this year ( 2 years later) we go and apply for a home loan and guess what they put a collection on our account for this ” contract we broke” I called the company and got a run around about what it should be and I explained to them that we bought the equiptment and wasn’t in a contract with them . They then sent me some contract that I didn’t sign but had my signature on it that I have never seen before. I have turned over this to my lawyer to deal with but people ….please please please stay aWAY FROM THIS COMPANY they are not honest and will try to take advantage of you. I wish I did more research on them before I decided to hand them over any money…

The sales person flat out lied. He said after 1 year we could cancel for $99.99. That was a flat out lie. He also said any equipment would be fixed free of charge if someone goes wrong. This is not true. Please don’t go with this company they are very deceptive. It took me 3 years to get out of this contract.

I DO NOT LIKE VIVENT AT ALL! Much info was withheld from me at installation(which was done in September 2018. I found out this year(last month) that I was supposed to get a video presentation on the panel mounted in the hall. However that part did not work due to no wifi connection. I have a Specrtrum (NETGEAR Model #Model R6300v2) 2G -5G wifi. My Smart phone, Roku and Tablet all have no problem, but Vivent claims that their equipment must have 5G to work. They will not admit that the problem is in THEIR equipment. Their predatory 60 month equipment loan was not explained and is obcene.

This company is a SCAM! I have been calling religiously to follow up with items I was offered as a promotion they were having since I never received it as promised. I’m always placed on hold for 15-20 mins then told a customer service representative with be in contact with me within several days. They never call! I’ve read reviews of customers dissatisfied with deceptive sales techniques and a possible class action lawsuit. I will definitely find out what it will take to be a part of it.

Been a 3 year customer now but I can tell you… I can’t wait to switch to another provider.
The system as attractive it is at first is not robust and fails quite often if it’s not the camera it’s the door bell or one sensor. Don’t take me wrong, their monitoring works just like any respectable security company with quick calls and follow up in case of an alarm or false alarm. Their customer service people are friendly when you call but you don’t get a resolution.
I don’t think it’s worth the $86 we pay every month. I won’t recommend them anymore (i referred 2 friends at the beginning) and I am sure other similar system are out there and working better.

i can’t get this leech to quit billing my 96 year old mother for a security system that is in a home that she hasn’t lived in in over 4 years. it chirps at random times usually at night. i stopped the automatic debit from her bank account but they keep sending her monthly bills with an accumulating total. she is 96 years old, deaf, 90% blind and living in a retirement apartment. stay away from vivint!

Horrible experience and expensive to cancel. They don’t bill you a standard cancellation fee like cable/satellite providers ($10-$20 per month for remaining months) they bill you for the monthly fees. So in my case $70 x 15 months = 1050 for a house I don’t live in and the new owner never called in to take over the account (as said they would). I would understand a set amount like $10-$20 for each month remaining but to pay a monthly service fee for services I don’t use and haven’t lived in the home in 2 years. Horrible, horrible policy. Very unhappy and will let everyone I know who asks for security system referrals know about my experience and that I’m paying a monthly fee with one hand twisted behind my back and unable to cancel until my 15 months are up.
