The Good

  • Solid Home Automation Features
  • No Upfront Fees
  • Variety of Security Equipment

Solid Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

No Upfront Fees

Unlike many home security companies, Vivint does not charge any upfront fees for its security systems. This makes signing up for Vivint’s services more affordable. This can also provide peace of mind to potential customers that they don’t have to put down a hefty down payment in order to receive Vivint’s security services.

Variety of Security Equipment

Vivint has various home security solutions with a variety of equipment available. Depending on your home security package, offered equipment will vary, but Vivint has multiple security plans to choose from. Some of Vivint’s offered security equipment and smart home products include:

  • Doorbell Camera
  • Outdoor Camera with Night Vision
  • Indoor Camera
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Smart Door Locks
  • Motion Sensors
  • Motion Detectors
  • Panic Pendant
  • Garage Door Opener
  • Vivint Smartphone App
  • Smart Light Switches

The Bad

  • High Monthly Monitoring Fees
  • 60-Month Contract
  • Customer Service Complaints
  • Negative Vivint Reviews
  • Moving Fee May Apply

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up based on a variety of additional package options. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Customer Service Complaints

Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices and slow technician response times. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Moving Fee May Apply

If you want a Vivint specialist to remove your home security system, you have to pay a fee $129. However, if you opt to remove the equipment yourself, the fee may not apply. Vivint suggests looking through the SkyControl instructions to remove correctly. You also have to pay an additional fee of $129 to reinstall the equipment into your new location.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out Vivint reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you.

Protect American has the highest customer rating on our site.

The Bottom Line

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. We recommend more affordable options that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

The person who came to my home was friendly and talked me into a contract. I agreed to one year, imagine my surprise when I received information that it was a 5 year contract. I told the person, no I did not sign up for 5 years. I/m on social security and don’t have that kind of mony. So I was sent a copy
of the contract showing 5 years. I KNOW that contract was doctored to look like 5 years. company is not so great, and they are scammers. The only way I could get out of the contract was to sell the remaining balance to someone. Imagine that, I got no takers. I am furious that they scammed me.
    this is $5000.00 that I don’t have!

These guys will say anything to get the sales. They promised I would be able to get out of the contract if I lost my job but that’s not the case. They just extend it out. I am hand g to pay 70 a month for this service with no way out. I would never recommend their service

We signed up for the service and went with a 4 year contract. We had an outdoor camera (which quit working) and we have an indoor camera. This one was recently damaged and does not work.If you want to get replacement devices, you have to pay full price for them. They do not have a service department to work on devices. Also, for financial reasons, we looked at canceling our contract. unlike other home service providers, Vivint does not prorate the cost.If you leave, you pay off the entire account.I would recommend another provider.

Run far far away from Vivint. The contract ends up shafting if you aren’t aware of it because they lock you into a loan on the equipment. We had to pay 750 dollars to cancel and get out of the contract. Awful company that takes advantage of people and doesn’t disclose how much you will have to pya if you end up deciding to cancel

My system was hacked for years and Vivint knew it. When l called frequently for service, Vivint said they would not come out unless l could give them the code. I explained the code would change without my knowledge so l couldn’t give it to them, still they would not come out but never hesitated to TAKE my 50.00 every month for five years for a system l could not use, and they always refused to come out but never refused my money. They knew the address on the account and knew where the money was coming from EVERY month, what would prevent them from coming out for assistance? Bottom line, they didn’t care except for money.

Tried to cancel after my 3 year contract was up, but they say I still have 7 months to go and wants $531 before I can ‘buy out of my contract’. I’m paying for broken equipment that won’t work and they won’t send a tech out to fix. Complete scam once they get you into a contract.

Worst cancellation service I have ever encountered! They do not have a cancellation fee or even anything written in the contract about how their cancellation policy is. You have to pay off the remainder of your contract to cancel service. Why would anyone cancel then? Might as well use it if you are being forced to pay for it anyway. I would never recommend this system to anyone.

This company is corrupt. Their only strength is taking money from customers. My mother’s house burned in September 2017. The electric wires were fried and there was no electricity to the house. We never received a call from Vivint asking if there was a problem, They continued to bill a credit card and demanded more documentation than anyone else required to give us a deferment. We first thought we had cancelled the service, but later when they started billing again, when we learned we had only been given a deferment.

They said they would refund money, but when I called them about no refund on my mother’s credit card, I finally spoke to manager who told me the truth. The contract my mother signed cannot be cancelled for a house fire. We are expected to get a new security system at our expense where she lives now or get someone to take over the contract. The time we were on deferment was added to the end of the contract and the “credit” they gave was only a credit on our account with them, not on the credit card. They intend to continue billing until 2022. No one we had previously talked to explained that we could not cancel the contract.

This company is very corrupt with customer service people who are uninformed or directed to withhold important facts about a contract, while appearing to be helpful to the customer. I always get transferred to a “customer loyalty” department. This is a joke. I would never, ever, ever use this company again or recommend it to anyone else. They feel entitled to make money off our misfortune and are grossly dishonest in trying to keep our money coming in.

Vivint is by far the worst security system for a home. I have had Vivint for almost a year, it’s had issues since day one and we have constantly been calling Vivint. We have spent hours and hours on the phone trying to get it to work properly! They came once to supposedly fix the issue but no success. Our camera hardly ever records when people come to our house and if it does, it won’t notify us till hours later. What’s the point of having a security system if it’s just going to let us know WHEN IT WANTS TO that strangers are roaming around our property? Every technician tell us that they are very experienced on helping with issues over the phone, Okay you do!! But your experience hasn’t helped us at all! One night we had to cancel some plans we had for the family because we were on the phone for hours with Vivint getting instructions from them on how WE needed to do all the dirty work. They couldn’t get anyone out there for us, oh and they charge you if the send someone to do technical work. Not even a year with Vivint and our monthly payment already went up!!!!

Vivint used to be wonderful to work with.. three years ago when we got our service. Now, their customer service is absolutely HORRIBLE! And good luck getting a tech to come repair or install anything. Three weeks and three appointments.. tech never showed or called on any occasion. They are absolutely horrible. Their prices are insane for products and services that don’t work! Skip this company.

We was under contract at one address & fulfilled the contract, now we moved from the previous address without physically signing another contract & bam we get hit on our credit reports for not paying or not honoring a contract. How can this be when we had a contract at one address then get a blemish on our credit report for a contract that does not have our current address on it or having ANY installations? We never had their service at our current address, how can this be? I wish I can file a lawsuit or some kind legal action for the lie that has damage to our credit scores as a collection. If anyone can share with me how I can show them consequences for their unfair practices.

Worst security system we have ever encountered. The equipment is constantly failing and the support is via “chatting” with a rep or on the phone. It is impossible to get them to send an actual person to your home to address problems with the system or to the get system functioning properly. The cameras and alarm system only function properly (at best) 50% of the time. The cameras and Sky Control Panel (the actual control panel) constantly have to be rebooted and the DVR system doesn’t playback video consistently as it is constantly needing to be rebooted. Expensive monthly monitoring, expensive equipment, poor customer service. Also, they will out right tell you that you can not cancel your contract until you “buy out” whatever remains on your agreement.

While we were at the house the alarm system worked fine had minor issues here and there.
I felt as if the prices were high and I didn’t like being stuck into a 5 year contract but the salesman was extremely good and had my wife sold on the top notch equipment that would revolutionize our alarm system…
Needless to say we have sold the house as of October of 2017 and we are still stuck paying the monthly fee and cannot get out of the contract due to an interesting loophole. The buyer who purchased our house took over the system as agreed upon but and here is the kicker. My wife supposedly needed to call and give authorization for them to take over our services. So the buyer started their own service contract with Vivint. Now Vivint is getting paid from two separate entities at the same address for the same equipment and service.
    Very interesting contract language…
Very unethical but profitable for them all the same.

A Vivint salesman showed up at my door on a Friday afternoon. I had been thinking about a security system, so I was willing to hear his pitch. I have been in sales all my life and his pitch was the typical garb. He said he had to make sure I qualified…FIRST FLAG. Everyone qualifies. I had to sign up for a five year monitoring service at $60.00 per month for the equipment I would choose…SECOND FLAG. I had an option to purchase the equipment over five years by taking out a personal loan through Citizens Bank in Utah, where the Vivint HQ is located (more on this later)…THIRD FLAG. I indicated that I wanted to research the company before making the purchase. The salesman applied all the great reasons to sign up and told me I had the standard 3 DAYS to change my mind if I did not like the service and equipment…FORTH FLAG. I said that is ridiculous and he changed it to 30 days to cancel the contract. He said he had a tech that could install the equipment that evening…FIFTH FLAG. I agreed to the installation and the tech arrived around 7PM or so and did not leave until after midnight. Every salesman knows if they do not get the contract before they leave, the chances are less than 50% they will later.

I broke my first purchasing rule…do your research first! Once I started researching, I found a very large number of less than positive reviews. Every company gets bad reviews, but each negative review seemed to reflect the same issues…equipment failures, salesman not being honest, customer service horrors, etc. Even the better reviews seemed to have negative issues as well…STRIKE ONE. I then researched the equipment. I found some of the exact items such as the door lock, Kwikset Smart Lock 888, and other items that were as good or better that what Vivint was selling. I chose the higher priced items I found for my comparison and discovered that over the five years of sending payments to Citizens Bank, it would cost me almost double the price…STRIKE TWO. The main issue that was very negative to me was that I was taking out a personal loan from Citizens Bank for the equipment. So in two years, my equipment fails and Vivint does not feel obligated to replace it, I am still responsible for the payments. I contacted Citizens Bank and they were not very knowable as to the situation. They did indicate that there is no interest on the loan and not even fees that they charge Vivint. I never heard of a back that would process hundreds of loans with no interest and no fees…STRIKE THREE.
Once my salesman called me about these issues, he only went over his sales pitch and really did not address any of my concerns. He then said he would later contact me to talk about my trepidations. One week later, no call or even an email. Needless to say, I canceled my contract and had the equipment removed. The tech did a nice job of removing the equipment and seemed to understand my issues of cost and reviews.
To sum it up…double the equipment cost, personal loan that has to be paid regardless if equipment works or not and the monthly monitoring service is very high. I liked all the equipment Vivint installed, but there uninvited. were too many negative issues for me to consider keeping the service. Just do your research before you purchase from this or any other company that shows up at your door

Vivint has nice people who work for them but their customer support, missleading sales tactics, and issues with hardware sinks them. I had an issue that was to be resolved. It could take 7-20 business days, which basically means 2 weeks at the earliest. Don’t try to cancel service on the weekend when your home, cause they are off as well. Call back during the week. When I asked why my issue was not resolved they did not have an answer but told me I would have to pay shipping, and get to wait another 2 weeks. One would think in this day and time 2-3 day shipping is not too much to ask for. FIND A DIFFERENT COMPANY! You’ll be glad you did.

I got this service in 2017 and absolutely love the service I had a few issues but was able to resolve it with customer service. However, in October 2018 I decided to move and to suspend the service until I moved to my new location. Due to situation beyond my control I was unable to resume the service. When I initially signed up the representative informed me that if I decided to cancel I would have to continue paying for the equipment which I’m currently doing. Now Vivint is telling me that I can’t cancel I must pay the service fee along with the equipment fee and I’m unable to get out of the contract for five years. How can a company demand fees for a service that the customer no longer have.
