Pros

Vivint SmartHome Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

Month-to-Month Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

High Equipment + Monthly Monitoring Costs

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you’ll notice between Vivint and Protect is 1) Upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn’t have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint’s 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

  Vivint Protect America Frontpoint
Equipment Upfront $500 - $1800 $0 $69 - $833
Basic Alarm Monitoring $29.99 $19.99 - $41.99 $34.99
Video Monitoring $49.99 $24.99 - $49.99 $49.99
Contract 5-year 3-year 3-year
Installation Professional; $50 - $200 DIY DIY
Customer Rating 1/10 8/10 7/10

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out the Vivint smart home reviews and home security reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you. A common complaint customers have is customer service. Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices, long contract, and slow technician response times. Unlike other review sites, BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com does not allow companies to pay to remove reviews. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don’t want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

Vivint customer service is the worst I have experienced. It took 9 calls to get them to correct equipment exchange and billing.
They claim that you do not have a contract with vivint, only a contract with the lending institution for their equipment which is financed for 60 months.
After the equipment is paid off, you can cancel vivint at any time. This is all questionable as they do not follow through with customer service request. They have you sign a contract for the equipment and the service, Question that before signing up with vivint. I am so very disappointed with vivint.

Terrible customer support. Poor quality installation and equipment. Door keypad quit lighting up after one week, door sensor constantly falls out, get messages saying someone rang our doorbell but videos shows no one there, left wires dangling out of control panel and disconnected rear doorbell. Refuse to come out to correct problems.

I have nothing good to say about Vivant, our original install was suppose to be on a Thursday, they pushed it back to Friday, ok, no big deal for 1 day out, 2 people came out to do the install, one was our sales rep and the other I guess was the manager or another sales rep, I don’t even know, our sales rep said they don’t hire 3rd company installers anymore and that we (the sales rep) has to install the equipment…. which would be fine IF they knew what they were doing, they were at my house from 10 in the morning until 9:30 at night, my husband had to kick them out… my system is still not installed and they have been giving us a run around on when someone can come out to finish it…. also, they have damaged my home, so now we need to hire a contractor to give us an estimate on the damage so we can get reimbursed from Vivant…. VERY disappointed and would never recommend Vivant to anyone.

Shameful the sales man was very dishonest told me I was getting a free upgrade then took my credit card to put on hold as company policy, I asked him why he needed it and if I will be charged I asked him about five times and he said no in front of my wife and daughter now they are taking out money every month saying the equipment costs $2,000.00. This is so wrong and unethical. I will be writing the Attorney General and Equifax, transunion and Experian.

The info listed on this page is not entirely true regarding Vivint’s contract term and cancellation policy, the term can range from 42-60 months (I chose the latter). You can also cancel the monitoring at any time but you still have to pay off any equipment you purchase from them, so essentially if you want all the smart home stuff it will cost you more to cancel compared to if you just do a basic security system. Their monitoring fee can also be as low as $29.99 if you just do a security system with no home automation (I know this because I almost chose that package before I opted for the additional cameras and smart home features)

I really love the system and have referred many friends who also enjoy it. It’s very user friendly and much easier to use than my two previous alarm companies that I’ve had and costs about the same money each month and I get extra features with my Vivint system. All in all, I’d give it a 10 because it does everything I need it to do, the gentleman that knocked on my door to sell it to me was more than respectful, it’s actually very affordable, and the customer service is hands down better than anything I’ve ever dealt with at ADT and Brinks.

Locks have not been working, after talking to someone for nearly an hour they had to send me a new lock but! I have to put it in. Don’t know how. Now they want to charge me for the older lock that is still in my door. Refuse to send a service person. Funny how when they put it in they had to get someone from Regina and they were here in 30 minutes. Now they have me and refuse to help me.

salesman said they were rated number 1, wrong! Said try it and if unhappy everything would be put back perfect,.wrong! Installer left bad mess, then when returned to remove it, he left unfilled holes in walls, doors, doorbell not replaced correct, and door latch wasn’t even screwed in. They were not professional at all.

I do not suggest anyone use these people! I have not had anything but problems. The technician came out to fix one problem on hooking cameras to wifi but he created another problem by some how making my system not pick up door sensors. So now we have to have another technician come out. We have had 3 technicians and we have only been with Vivint for a month and half! Do NOT use Vivint!!!! Not worth the expensive money you pay a month for it to not secure your house.

I’m a 68 year old woman living on a small S.S check and have been trapped by Vivint’s deceptive sales tactics into a 5 year contract (it won’t expire until 2022)! I would never knowingly sign such a contract! I’ve got Vivint because I was living by myself and suffering from seizures. but recently my circumstances changed when my daughter moved in with me and therefore I have no need for their service any longer.

I’ve called Vivint and was told that I have to pay for the remaining balance if I want to cancel the service, which is over $50.00/month for the remaining 36 months or otherwise they will report me to the Credit Bureaus and forward my so called “debt” to a collection agency.

Beware, this is not something their sale representatives will formally disclose to you. Actually, you’d be better off not giving your business to this company

I sold my home 5/7/2109 and cancelled everything then. I had to paid off that predatory equipment loan before I could cancel my services which is complete horse sh!t, but I did it anyway. I sent them the confirmation number and they lost it. I sent in the cancellation request as they requested and they lost it.
Oh one other thing…it takes 30 DAYS for them to cancel your account!!
    WHY?!?!?
So that they can collect ONE MORE PAYMENT FROM YOU!
DO NOT go with Vivint Smarthome. I won’t ever again.

Have had constant problems with the connection to the thermostat. Numerous calls to customer service resulting in over an hour long with no repair in the end. Their solution…to mail me a new thermostat which takes 7-10 days while in the mean time it’s 100+ degrees. This thermostat cannot be controlled any other way besides through the unworking app! Then when I receive the new thermostat I have to call back to have them walk me through the setup again which could be another hour phone call and may not even work in the end. Ridiculous design with malfunctioning equipment. Better solution would be to have someone out right away to make repair. Asked to speak to a supervisor to explain my ongoing problems, but can’t. Speaking to someone in another country and so out of touch. Just bad all around. :(

When contemplating the home security system, I had some anxiety about being able to manage the system. The sales representative assured me that the installers/techs would answer any questions I had.

During the installation, I asked if they had worked with people who weren’t very “techno-savvy”, to which the reply was, “Oh yes!”, and I was assured that they would answer any questions that I had when they were done with the installation and before they left.

When they first arrived at my house, they paused and stared into my car windows before coming in, with no later explanation. I might have been interested in the app for the car, which was what I thought might have been their reason for staring at it.

The two techs seemed to be in a rush the whole time they were at my house, to the point that I almost asked them if I was making them nervous somehow, or if they were in a hurry to get done to go somewhere else. The appointment was scheduled for (after I got home from work) at 9PM, which is still daylight in Alaska in the summer. The time was not my idea, as I would have preferred to wait until Wednesday, but the sales rep was pushing to have it done ASAP so that I could get the installation fee waived. However, if it was not a good time for the installers, it would have been better to cancel and/or reschedule, rather than rushing through the job and providing very poor service.

One of my doors had been left unlocked all night. I don’t even know if the system was on or not when they left. The boxes from the various parts were just left on the floor. I picked up several pieces of packaging waste after they left. The first guy just left when he was done with his part. Before he left, I asked him how to lock the front door, and he replied, “Any way you want.”, and he walked off. Before he left, the other tech asked him about the Vivant app not working on my Android. He shrugged and walked off. The remaining tech told me that he didn’t know anything about Android phones, as he only uses i-phones.

Android phones have a huge segment of the market, and I was not told prior to the sale that an Android phone would not be compatible. Prior to this, he showed me one time the basic operation of the panel. With the confusion of the app, I forgot what he had told me. The way learning works is to demonstrate and allow practice, rather than telling the person and then introducing a stressful event such as an app that appears critical but inoperable. Looking at the overwhelming panel, I asked if there was an information booklet for it, and was told “no”. I stated in a question tone, “I guess I could go to the website”, while pointing to the panel. He said that I could. Clearly, I didn’t understand. I was astounded, as I thought I was supposed to understand how it worked before they left. The tech then held up a 2-inch square item and said something about it being for flood, and I think he said it goes under the water heater. Apparently, he missed my confused look, and he just set it on the floor. He sent me a text, which was for a survey that I was supposed to complete on his iPad, which he did not present to me before he scurried out, as his coworker had already left a few minutes ago. I texted the sales rep shortly after the second guy left with a message of “That was disappointing. I don’t know how it works, but they were in a hurry to go.” The sales rep offered to stop by Monday, but I had to work today (Sunday), so that didn’t help much. I understand about Sunday being his day off, so I didn’t push the issue.

Your brochure was impressive, and there were some other services in which I might have been interested, but now I have no idea how to operate this system and am afraid to open my door, which is the opposite of what a security system is supposed to provide. I was left hanging, or rather stuck, in my house, afraid to open the door for fear of inadvertently wasting the time of emergency responders, as well as being embarrassed in front of the neighbors. Needing to work off the stress, I finished a few projects, read a book, and was eventually able to fall asleep. When I got up this morning, I tried calling customer service. The cancellation office was closed, so I tried the tech line. The first call went to the country of Columbia. The second call went to Jamaica. I tried again later, after a two-hour workout to burn off some stress, and the call dropped. The fourth call ended up with a lengthy hold, after which I decided to try the website, which was also a fail, until I tried the chat line. Finally, I was able to turn the system off. To feel more secure, I also unplugged it and took out the battery.

Initially, I had the impression that there was a camera system. One little camera for the front door is woefully inadequate for a house with five doors, and provides NO security for my fuel tank. The little door tabs look cheap and ugly. There should be some type of camera for the back of the house as well. I am going to go with the security camera system that I had purchased previously. Your system sounded good, but the techs failed miserably in their rush to get out of my house, for whatever reason. It could have been my pacing cats, who were apparently trying to tell me this was a bad idea.

If you are going to be a national company and import outsiders into an area to do work, you need to train them about the region. For example, your sign was randomly place in my yard, where in the winter time it will be buried in snow. The techs could have asked the woman of the house (me) where to put the sign. The installers seemed to have an attitude of “Get in, get out, and get paid”. Well now you can send someone to get in, get your stuff, and close my account.

There is nothing that will convince me to ever do business with your company again. When I express a concern and get a response of “Oh well.”, then I am done!

After I didn’t get a response to my email cancellation, I tried the chat to follow up. I was told that I needed to call. It took 15 minutes to get the appointment scheduled. The earliest time they could do it was nine days; yet they were in a big hurry to get the installation done. I’m paying someone else to take out the system, and the Vivint techs can meet me at the door, because I don’t want them inside my house again.

let’s talk about customer service (or lack thereof)…

I opened a chat with a Vivint rep named BayLee this morning — first, to let Vivint know that my (brand new) outdoor camera is filled with water and we have no view of our driveway or street because the camera is broken… and second, to let Vivint know that the security sensor on my son’s bedroom window has been open for three days and the alarm has not alerted me at all. I am currently looking at my alarm panel and it is telling me that the sensor is at 93% battery and that the window is closed… yet, I’m looking at a WIDE OPEN window.

The response from BayLee was, “oh okay, let’s fix that.” No apology for leaving my home and MY CHILD’S BEDROOM WINDOW un-alarmed when I’m paying $85 a month for a security system. No empathy for the concerned mother on the other end of the chat whose child could’ve been kidnapped last night due to the faulty equipment Vivint provided.

The explanation she gave me? I am responsible to contact Vivint once per month to do monthly maintenance/testing on every piece of equipment that I have in my home to ensure that it’s working properly… that’s right! They add a secret clause in your contract that states that you THE CUSTOMER must call them once per month for eternity to test all of your equipment. Mind you, the sensor broke three days ago — so, even if I had called at the beginning of the month for my “monthly testing,” I wouldn’t have known until August that the sensor had broken (if we’re going by their monthly testing window).

On top of that, after basically severing that chat session because I was tired of BayLee and her unprofessional attitude, I wasted 20 minutes on the phone with SherryLynn — Who told me that they would not have a problem sending a technician out to my house to fix the camera (which is still under warranty) and look at the busted sensor… but only if I pay a $49 fee for the technician visit.

Vivint won’t be seeing another dime of my money or my monthly payments. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY! GO WITH A MORE REPUTABLE SECURITY SYSTEM THAT ISN’T RIDICULOUSLY FLAWED!

Terrible company. Equipment never worked and was unreliable. When tried to cancel after my contract was up they refused to process the cancellation without numerous phone calls and hoops to jump through. Constantly trying to upsell us on different deals and promotions. None of which were remotely appealing. The final phone call took over thirty minutes of arguing with them to simply allow me to cancel. I still then needed to send them a written explanation on why I wanted to cancel.
