  • High monthly monitoring fees: Monitoring plans with Vivint start at $39.99 per month and go up based on a variety of additional package options. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry leading providers and their respective lower plans.
  • A long, 60-month contract: Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.
  • Solid home automation features: One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features such as temperature control, auto door locking, doorbell cameras and more.
  • Customer service complaints: Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices and slow technician response times. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.
  • Our recommendation: With a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, the economics just don’t make sense for most home security seekers. We recommend much more affordable options that don’t tie you down with long contracts, and have a deeper history of high-level customer service. Frontpoint Security and Protect America are two options you should consider if you are interested in Vivint.

    This system has NOT worked properly since we first purchased it. We have had to call customer service numerous times for them to try to fix the system and they have never fixed it. When it was first Installed they did NOT install all the components we paid for. Had to call back and reschedule for them to install ALL the equipment that we ordered. Customer service is completely useless they try to make the consumer repair the item over the phone without threatening to charge a service fee. The app NEVER works properly. I had a smoke detector go off a few days ago and because there was a glitch on the panel (which there is ALWAYS something wrong with it) the panel was not charging and disconnected the emergency responders call. He then had to call my husband at work WHO WAS NOT HOME to confirm the house was NOT burning down and he is NOT suppose to get calls at work yet miraculously he did answer during work. The thermostat NEVER works properly. Had a $200 electric bill thanks to Vivint not explaining the settings on the panel I called customer service and all they tried to do was pressure me into signing a 48 month contract to get an upgrade panel they wouldn't even offer a free service to our system to confirm over the next 30 day cancellation period that they require to ensure our system was working properly during that required 30 day cancelation period.Read More

    It seems Vivint has a great sales pitch and that is where their greatness ends. Not quite a year into having the system and my cameras rarely, if ever work. I have spent HOURS on the phone with customer service to fix the issues. Each time I have the system fixed, another camera goes down, or my personal favorite, none of them record or allow playback.     Vivints currently product is not a smart home solution; it is a security system with a simple camera and an automated door lock. If you are looking for a smart home solution I would suggest you look else where. There are cheaper and more versatile systems on the market. Even Vivint’s older products are more versatile than their current product. Maybe in a few years when they get their act together Vivint will have a good product but for now I would suggest you go elsewhere.

    I’ve had Vivint 10 months. Installation was smooth .Equiptment works great and customer service has been excellent
    One time I entered the wrong code twice because I didn’t have my glasses on they notified the police and called me on the two way system verified that I was the homeowner by predetermined security questions and then they cancelled the alarm(very efficient and quick) I recommended Vivint to my son who had it installed who also highly recommend it to others.

    I hope for all of your sake you haven’t signed up with Vivint security, and if you’ve happened to think about doing so, don’t. We signed up and gave them a post dated check(told us it was perfectly fine to do) to which they cashed 9 days before the date on it. I call to have them fix it, and they say ok we got this just gotta wait till it’s approved. Supposedly it was approved the 6th of this month (which I’m not even positive it was that day because I’ve been told the 4th as well). So I wait a few days and nothing shows up in the bank and i call back. They say it was sent in a check. Ok cool, whatever. Well the 15th comes and still no check, and that amount is supposed to be taken out again the 19th so I call to see where it is. They tell me it takes 7-10 business days to recieve so they say call back by the 17th if not received and they will stop payment until we get the check. Ok, once again whatever. Well of course the 19th comes comes and still no check. Call once again, and they say it must have been sent out late since it was issued on a saturday but they can’t stop payment because it’s too close to the day it’s going to be taken out and they will credit us a month for our troubles. Super irritated at this point but i hang up and wait till the next day when payment comes out and for some stupid unknown reason they have taken the exact same amount owed out of our account yet 75 was supposedly credited and it wasn’t taken off?? So now they have charged us double what we owe. Guess what, I call AGAIN. Ok this point I’m pissed, tell them how I feel and am hung up on. Collect myself and call again and talk to supervisor. Supervisor says let me get the tracking # for the check and I’ll email it to you, even sends me an email to message her if I don’t hear from her again. Well a full day and a half passes and nothing. So just got off the phone with them again and now they basically can’t tell me anything and that the money is in limbo and it will be a few more weeks until we see the money. DO NOT GO WITH VIVINT! There’s no telling if I’ll ever get my money back or not!

    I have had Vivint now for two months. They did not have all the equipment to install my system the day they came. Two days later, my neighbor got Vivint and was able to get all his equipment.

    I called and they were going to send somebody out. THEY NEVER SHOWED.

    I called again and was told somebody would be out in two weeks. AGAIN, NOBODY SHOWED.

    I called and explained that it’s ok to go ahead and MAIL the rest of my equipment and I will install it myself. I was told they would do that. I should get the the rest of my equipment no later than 10 business days. 15 DAYS LATER, STILL NO EQUIPMENT.

    I called and spoke with another representative who informed me the equipment was NEVER mailed. They DON’T mail products.

    So they have decided to set up a THIRD apppointment for me to have somebody FINISH installing my equipment.

    LETS HOPE THEY FOLLOW THROUGH ON AT LEAST A FOURTH PROMISE!!

    We moved into our house 3 years ago. Vivint reps were walking around the neighborhood selling home security systems. Having children and a husband that works most nights, we signed up. Installation happened that day. They were all very nice and not pushy at all. We only got the basic system and they were okay with that. Definitely not pushy at all! About 9 months in,our panel became faulty and wouldn’t turn on. Things happen so I just called the service line and had someone out the next week. It was fixed at no charge. We have had some scares and Vivint contacted us within 30 seconds to make sure we are okay. Recently, hubby andI were on vvacation. We set the alarm to AWAY. The motion detector went off twice and Vivint contacted police to go walk around the house since we were out of town. Excellent customer service. I love Vivint so much that I told everyone about it. My parents even signed up. They have the camera and it works pretty well! I will continue to use Vivint no matter where I live.

    As with any company there are goods and there are bads. But I chose and Love Vivint b/c of what I would be looking for in a Home Automation/Security system:
    – Easy to use, fastest response I have ever experienced with any other security out there, most up to date technology …and the use from the App on my phone is incredible.

    – I was double charged ONE time in all my time using Vivint. Called their customer service – I didn’t yell – I just explained what happened and the what do you know? The rep was awesome. Within a few weeks I had a check for the full amount delivered right to my house.

    – As with any technology – sometimes there is an issue (like when I had to replace my brand new Samsung Galaxy S5 3 days after buying it)….so when 1 door lock was giving me issues – I called in and I had a tech here a day or 2 later and everything was fixed.

    nothing is perfect, but this company offers high quality and in my opinion the best.

    We love our system. They respond much quicker than ADT did and I get notified every time my kids come home from school with a video clip from the camera. Def makes my wife and I happy and works great. It seemed pretty pricey at first but for everything you get and all the system does, it’s worth it over some cheap outdated system.

    The salesman told me that my insurance company would give me a good discount if I installed the system. He said that it would cover a majority of the monthly cost. This was an absolute lie. I tried cancelling the service shortly after the install to find out there is a 3 day, YES 3 DAY, period where you can change your mind if unhappy with it.The install is garbage. My home is brand new. I have a 750.00 front door that looks like a 40.00 door from a garage sale after they finished with it. Every month I hate this company when the bill rolls around. GOOD THING ITS ONLY 3 YEARS LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I selected this system for it’s state of the art technology and the ability to update my security settings and thermostat from my home. I was very happy with it for the last 3 years, until now. My thermostat quit working 2 days ago when I attempted to turn on my heater. I called and spoke to Mike with the thermostat tech support. Mike informed me that I need to take the top off the thermostat and remove the wires from it so I can twist them together and check the furnace. Though I was uncomfortable doing this as I am not an electrician, I made multiple attempts to do this. I was unable to unscrew one of the wires, and was then informed that a technician would be out on October 29th to check it. I informed him that this was not acceptable because it was 6 weeks out, and I can not go without heat for that long. That was the best he could do. I eventually got the wires out and called back for further assistance. After working with Jose in tech support we were able to establish that the thermostat was in fact the issue. I was scheduled for a technician to come out the next morning between 8 and 8:30 am. At 4:30 pm, after multiple phone calls and assurances that a technician would be out for sure that day, I was informed that I had been misinformed, and they could not guarantee a day that a technician could come out due to a shortage of technicians because they had all gone back to school. They could also not send me a new thermostat to have installed by a third party because it had to be installed by one of their technicians. At this time, I still have no heat in my house, nor any idea on when this problem will be resolved.

    I was lied to from the moment the salesmen said hello to me on the telephone. I had a previous system in the house I just purchased and they never tested the lines. They arrive to do the install and everything that was supposed to be done and that I was assured would be done was told to me that it could not be done. I called VIVINT while the installer was their and they just tried to offer me more equipment for their screw ups. After the install was finished the installer said he was all done but could not alarm to of the back bedrooms because he could not find the wires. I asked to to take his equipment out NOW and get out of my house please. He looked at me in amazement. DO NOT TRUST THESE SALES PEOPLE AS THEY WILL YES YOU TO DEATH.

    Extended contract 2 more years when I put the alarm in test mode foe 3 months and only had 4 months on the original contract. The alarm has had no power for 2 months and the battery is dead but they still charge me and will not cancel my contract. It is a good system to bad it is run by a corrupt company.

    I really did like the system, although I did go back to ADT. The thing about the Vivint system is I had problems with it everyday. Everything looked really nice. I love the mobile app, but it just doesn’t work that well as a security system. If somebody was to come in my house within the minute the alarm is going to go off, all they need to do is take that panel off the wall and there is no alarm. The system thinks you shut it off within the minute before the alarm goes off. Nothing is hardwired. The installer shows up in their own vehicle and they don’t carry ladders, they had to use mine. I canceled within the three days so I wouldn’t be stuck in that long contract, which is another thing that people need to know if you live in the state of California. I really wanted this system because of the looks of everything it looks a lot nicer than my ADT, but with my ADT I feel safe and it works I have no problems with my ADT system. I just didn’t feel safe the system needs a lot of work and the installers should show up in a company vehicle with ladders and everything they need to do a install properly and hard wire the system for the main panel. It’s a shame for this company not to have better leadership to understand to get vehicles for the installers to put out the money to have them show up like a professional team and do the install and they would gain so much if they would do that. Don’t have these young guys and girls walking around neighborhoods doing installs at 1:00 in the morning and trying to choose a system as fast as they can so they get the sale. These are people’s homes and if you did this right, this company would be great but they keep trying to get things done so fast and they’re losing. If they did it right they would keep gaining and gaining and gaining on customers. Buy your installers company vehicles and do this right, don’t just make them drive their own car. Most of this stuff is just common sense and it’s a shame they don’t get it because the equipment really looks nice but it needs to work nice to really protect homes and businesses.     To any possible future customers – PLEASE really think about t before you sign a contract with this company! They are pushy and fast talkers, worse than any car salesman I have seen. Once they have you locked into a contract they could not give 2 hoots about you. As soon as I can I am switching to another company that has NO CONTRACT. If they had truly great things to offer, they would not have to force you to stick around! Oh and by the way. Go on Amazon with the part #’s of what they are installing. I found one thing that they are charging $120 for that you can get for $23.99, and another that they charge $60 for that is $14.99. That is a 400% mark-up.

    WORST HOME SECURITY COMPANY EVER!!!
    I signed up for Vivint and the next day I canceled to go back to ADT. 2 weeks later they auto drafted $200 from my checking account with no authorization. 5 weeks later I finally got a check and it bounced for insuficient funds, and I was charged for that too…my bank charged me for a returned check. 6 weeks later I’m still trying to get reimbursed. If you ever see these salesmen come to your door, save yourself alot of grief and just slam the door in their face.

    Do not use this company for you home security. Yes their website and videos make it seem like they are state of the art, but they are far from it. When i signed up their rep insisted they had the best CS, and Tech Support in the industry. I paid a 300.00 install and signed a two year contract (big mistake). First a supervisor called me up two days before install and told me they forgot to have me answer a series of questions. He told me it would just take a few minutes. The rep came on the phone and after 12 brutal minutes of her reading from a script and getting 100% flustered if I asked any questions she hung up on me. I called back and stated what happened and had to wait for call back. Another rep called me back and started all over from the beginning.

    Fast Forward to install day. My GF was at the house since I had to work. Installer used outside outlets instead of the hidden ones because he was lazy. He told her that they couldn’t put them in french doors which is a 100% lie. After he left I come to find out he didn’t install my remote lock and the remote switch didn’t even work.

    Service: The cameras are 100% useless. I try to connect to them remotely and 90% of the time they don’t work and i get an error message that the cameras are online, but they can’t connect. Green lights are one but nothing. I called their tech support and after 50 minutes and their reps wouldn’t even apologize and acted like robots they told me a tech would have to come. When you may ask. Well how about 3 weeks! 3 WEEKS??? What? Yes they only have two technicians in Seattle. WOW!!!! i also can’t view any recordings. So now I have a non functioning system and have no idea when and if it will be fixed.

    Don’t use them for your families security!

    Customer service is POOR. Faulty Equipment installed. I have contacted customer service multiple times over a period of several days and they assured me someone will be calling and coming out to repair the equipment. This is day 4 and I have not been contacted. POOR SERVICE!!!

    Having service at one time with Apex, ADT prior to the installation recently Vivint Sky, this system is bar none the best. Since I paid for the equipment with ADT when my house was built in 2009, they use all the contacts on the doors, both wireless and hard wired, motion sensors, and glass sensors. The allowances were used to upgrade with three cameras, remote locks, water detector in the basement, remote light, additional door contacts, and window sensors on the basement windows. The installation was over 5 hours with no service charge, and it was completed as scheduled. The overall experience was totally professional. Oh yeah, I forgot that a friend that referred me received $50 and so did I.

    I bought the whole package. Since I’ve had this my wife had a lay off at her job (of 35 years). And I tried to negotiate contract terms with Vivint. They could not have cared less! Even reducing some of the elements would have cost me an additional $99.00 fee. Adding salt to the wound the camera if terrible. It would be worthless an any identification efforts of who would have been recorded. I don’t even recognize me! Further, I admit to foolishly signing a FOUR year contract! BUYER BEWARE. Go anywhere else.

    the worst company ever. do not get in to their trap. i have to called 2 times in one year of service and both for the low battery message. first time when their tech comes to install the system they don’t provide correct power source to the battery and all the sensor ends up getting power from batter only and once battery is dead they want money for the battery and charges for the tech to come and suffer from down time. you cant get out of the contract as well even though you suffer from all this as you will have to pay the same charges for remaining months on your contract. I highly recommend every one to look for the other company then this.

    This company is the worst company I have ever delt with in my life. They have charged me over 900 dollars for equipment I never received. They are liers and they promise me I didn’t have to pay the installation fee and they have charged me twice for it. They have been horrible to deal with and I would like to take some legal action out on them. Company’s should not be able to get away with stuff like this and I wished I would have NEVER. Signed up with them. Please if you read this choose another company. It will save you a lot of money. They tell you at the beginning that you get all this stuff free then they charge you.

    I’ll have to call for a smoke detector that is not working & the keypad does not beep when the door opens. So I won’t know how the service is until I try to get this problem taken care of. Til then I will say I feel very secure with my system.

    I was still in the installation phase, but the customer service was already horrible. I was transferred to the same person twice and he introduced himself as someone else each time and told me that the sales person I spoke with the day before was out of the office. I know that he lied about who he was because the operator confirmed who he transferred me to. This company will say anything for a sale and is not very good at keeping up with potential customers. If this is any indication of how their security systems are managed, a person would be better off with no security system at all.

    All of the reviews that you read on this website are 100% TRUE! The customer service is AWFUL! They hold you to a 42 or 60 month contract, even if you sell your home and you are moving somewhere that will not allow Vivint to be installed. They actually told me that I could advertise on Craigslist to find someone to assume the remainder of my contract. If ever move to a location that does not have high speed internet, your video camera will not work. They do not care and still force you to pay them. This company does not use standard business practices and will NOT treat you fairly. They want your money and that is all they care about. You have been forewarned by myself and the many other Vivint owners on this website. DO NOT sign a contract with this company!!!!!

    We just recently got the entire home security system set-up and we couldn’t be happier! It’s so easy to use and the app makes everything so easy to control. All the equipment is so nice and really gives us peace of mind. The technician was wonderful and had everything up and running in about an hour and took the time to teach us how to use everything. We were having some problems with the video camera so we had to call customer service and they were fantastic. They were so nice and so helpful. We did it a lot of research and compared a lot of companies, we definitely made the right choice with Vivint.

    I’ve had a bad experience . Iv’e had service for less then a year and have had problems with the door lock connecting the panel freezing the camera not working also they installed a new smoke detector . But when I looked on my phone app as soon as the tech left it said there was problems with the smoke detector. We bought the latest equipment to so there’s no excuse !

    42 month contract became a 66 month contract for having it in test mode for two months at the last part of contract. I had 3 months left on contract put the alarm on test mode due to divorce and I wasnt paying for something I wasnt using. Wont end the contract just keep extending it, So if you have a system do not talk to the idiots at the customer service desk I think total they have added 36 months on top of the original 42 month contract. It is good system but if you have bad customer service then the system really doesn’t matter.

    I had a Sales rep knock on my door in Houston, Texas his name was Tim Jooste, he said he was a supervisor, and try to convince me to put a sign in my garden planter to advertise for his company. The whole sales pitch was a lie of manipulation to try to “qualify” my home for a an advertising account. To me He was trying to convince me that only 2 homes on the street were being selected. Then he tried to bribe me and buy out my remaining balance of current provider…Illegal to do this and He was a Supervisor…Not a good guy to represent and train other reps to do this . unethical.     Poor product. Purchased for the camera and the camera does not work. Salesman told us try it for 30 days, we did and want it removed but they told us 10 days. Stuck with it now. Have three holes in my wall from poor installation waiting for them to repair and keep getting the run around. Not happy!

    Their equipment gave lots of grief for the first year of our contract. Then they “improved” their computer software and claimed to have lost the billing information for our account. They called and called to get us to pay their bill all the while on line the account showed a balance owing of $0.00. Then finally after about 3 months of promising that a bill would be sent, we received a statement showing an outstanding balance of $139. We sent a check immediately. The account on line reflected the credit and reset to $0.00. A week later the account balance reset to $75. A few days later I received an email indicating that our account was overdue and late payment charges were being applied. The next day we received an automated phone call indicating that we must make arrangements to pay the overdue account balance. I checked on line and discovered that the balance showing was $227. Now one must ask how it is possible for Vivint to deserve to be paid for charges that accumulate so quickly without any bill being sent.

    Terrible customer service and policies. All they want is your money. Its very apparent with the contract and how their sales representatives contact you. If I would have been able to do research first I would have never even considered purchasing their product. Many more bad experiences than good.

    For the love of all that good and right RUN! Worst customer service, incompetent installers, etc., etc., etc. Problems with system from day 1 which were never resolved. With 8 months left on a 4 year contract we moved and had our system moved to the new house the day before leaving on a 3 week vacation. Someone pushed a wrong button and canceled service to BOTH houses leaving our new home and all our belongings unprotected. 2 1/2 months later we still have no service yet they’re continuing to pull money out of our account and the REP SAYS HE HAS THE FINAL WORD AND WILL NOT STOP STEALING MY MONEY. I’m closing my checking account today to stop them because the bank says that only Vivint can stop it and Vivint refuses. They are thieves, plain and simple. Absolutely the worst.

    Contract is up
    Discontinue my month to month service with Vivint due to the lack and disrespectful customer service I received when my entire system has been and still is down for over a month now. I have been a loyal customer for years and while I don’t mind paying for top service equipment ,I refuse to pay for disrespectful customer service and the fact that I am paying for a security system to protect my home and my family that doesn’t even work,and no one at Vivint seemed to care about that but was more concerned about payment of a non working system is beyond me. I wonder why the Service department and billing department never talk to each other. I think you guys need to fix this very important part of your company, the customer should never have to call so many different numbers and repeat the same information to the different departments. I also feel bad for recommending your company to so many family members and friends in the past I hope their experience is not like mind. In the future pay attention to your customers and treat them with the respect and understanding you did when you first talked to them about your system and please fix your systems in a timely manner no one should wait months for system repairs ,and remember the reason why your doing business in the first place ,to help people feel safe in their home, and to that point you have Failed.

    Stay far away ! Thermostats and alarm went down, took 12 days for them to make a service call. My HEAT was on in the summer the entire time. Tech came and left and did not fix anything. Now alarm keeps beeping and was told had to wait another 11 days for service.
