Pros

Vivint SmartHome Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

No Upfront Fees

Unlike many home security companies, Vivint does not charge any upfront fees for its security systems. This makes signing up for Vivint’s services more affordable. This can also provide peace of mind to potential customers that they don’t have to put down a hefty down payment in order to receive Vivint’s security services.

Cons

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up based on a variety of additional package options. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out the Vivint smart home reviews and home security reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you. A common complaint customers have is customer service. Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices and slow technician response times. Unlike other review sites, BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com does not allow companies to pay to remove reviews. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

The app is horrible. The system is great when it works. Cameras constantly have problems. I think the only reason it has 1+ million downloads is i constantly have to delete it and re-download it.

I will never recommend Vivint to anyone I know and as soon as my contract is up, I will be cancelling it. In the last 4-6 months, we have called in 3 time because our equipment stopped working. The first call, we were told to take the panel off ourselves and as we were walked through how to fix it. It did not last long before it stopped working again. The 2nd time we were on the phone for over an hour and then told we would be charged for someone to come out and look at it. During this call we were told our contract was up in March 2018 and could cancel at that time if we wanted to. Someone came out, fixed it but again, it was only temporary. The last activity on our panel was February 4. The 3rd call we called to cancel and we were told that we still have another 6 months on our contract. We were talked to like we were idiots when we tried to explain how it was not working. We pay close to $80 per month and we cannot do a single thing; that is almost $500 for the past 6 months for nothing! We cannot change our heat, cannot unlock the door or lock it from our phones, and our house doesnt even arm when we leave. Also, last year, I tried to disarm the panel so that I could leave for work and my kids to school and it would not disarm. I was on hold for over an hour trying to get out of my house. This is so unacceptable. I will never recommend this company.

Bought the system at Best Buy in October, 2017. Should have known better when the garage door sensor fell off just before the installer left. I experienced intermittent outages of the remote cameras over the next couple of months, and had to have the system reset remotely by Vivint.
Finally, in Mar. 2018, I once again got offline messages for the cameras. Called customer service, and spent an hour online with a tech. He ran me all over the house trying to reset the doorbell camera and the garage door sensor. He finally said my problems would be fixed if he downloaded a software update to my system, which would take over an hour to do, and I should call back if I still had problems following the update. I asked to have a service call, which he adamantly said would cost me $45. Since I have had the equipment less than 6 months, I thought the faulty equipment should still have some kind of warrantee left. Not so, according to Mr. Tech.
Result: A day later, the update didn’t happen, the cameras were still offline, the Vivint controller for the garage door beeped continuously and had to be unplugged. The system could not be armed, of course. Finally, frustrated with the crappy equipment and tech service, I called Vivint to cancel the $50 monthly monitoring. The person on the phone offered to send out a service tech at no charge – whoopee. I still cancelled. Now, I shall find out if Best Buy will refund the $1300+ I spent on this junk.

The most horrible security company to use. They are useless when problems occure creating constant phone calls and appointments to get the junk to work. Don’t waste your time if internet/cell service isn’t perfect. They don’t care if it actually works just that they get paid.

Horrible Customer Service- DO NOT GET SERVICE FROM THIS COMPANY- THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AFTER THEY ARE IN CONTRACT!!!!
Vivint originally installed my service at a rental house where I was living. When I originally agreed to the service contract, I was given fantastic customer service in order to set up my service- there were no issues at all. However, now that I’m stuck in contract with this company, it has been a complete nightmare. They have proven to me time and time again that they do not care about their customers.
I scheduled well in advance and talked to two different people about moving my service to my new house and what type of equipment that we needed at the new address. That day, a technician actually showed up, but said no one communicated with him as to what we needed and did not bring the correct equipment- even though I specifically told two different people. So instead of installing the items that he did have (minus the key pad lock to the house), Vivint told him not to install anything- or so he told me. He said he would return with the correct equipment and never did.
I was forced to reschedule due to their own error, so I rescheduled for the following Thursday- 4 days after my original date. I made sure to be home as we had been waiting anxiously all week receiving texts messages stating how excited Vivint was to be installing our new equipment. Thursday comes and I wait at home for the four hour window that they provide me and no one shows up at all. I call to see what the issue is at the end of the window and they said that I was rescheduled, but no one even bothered to notify me. I asked why I was not notified and they said I was and give me a random number that is not even associated with my account at all- and let me remind you, I was receiving texts all week so it’s not like they didn’t have a correct number. They just didn’t even bother to tell me and this was their excuse.
So we rescheduled AGAIN. The next date we rescheduled to, we received an email at 9pm at night stating that we were rescheduled to a time that I’m working. So if you plan to take off work to be at home to get serviced, they can just tell you the night before that they aren’t even going to show up the next day. This is the kind of customer service they have. I called that morning to tell them I can’t be rescheduled because I am working during the new time that they decided randomly on their own to give me so they reschedule me AGAIN. At this point, I’m ready to cancel my service all together because I have been on the phone with them and no one is even concerned- so I explain to them my situation. I have 2 children that were abused and I need to have a home alarm system because I have to protect them from their abuser. He has also kidnapped them in the past from my house. So it is an extremely serious matter and I need the service immediately. They apologized and promised me that it would not happen again and that they would be there at the time they promised. Only now when I’m confirming it, they can’t even give me the date they originally promised (Monday) and have to reschedule me to Tuesday.
This time, THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENS- I get an email at 9 pm stating that I’m rescheduled for the morning while I’m at work. When the technician called me to let me know that he is on his way I tell him that I’m at work and that I did not plan for this, he then explains that they have an automatic scheduler that reschedules appointments- I specifically make appointments to be home during that time and from what I know, this is how most people that have jobs operate. This time he (the tech) got somebody from scheduling to call me back telling me that they were able to change it back to the original time I had requested. I call a little over halfway through my window and they cannot get a hold of the technician and they do not know where he is at. So I wait at home until the end of the window and, low and behold, no one even bothered to show up.
I call back and complain that this keeps happening, explain my situation AGAIN to another customer service supervisor and I’m reassured that I’m now at Priority Zero and that I would for sure have service by tomorrow and that all I needed to do was call scheduling and let them know and that they would already have notes about it.
Now in the morning, I called and informed them of what I was told by the supervisor that I spoke with the previous night. The account manager then informs me that she cannot make an appointment for me until Friday so I asked to speak with her supervisor (Jeff C.- now I’m taking names) and explain my situation AGAIN. He then informs me that that’s not possible because they have no appointments available until Friday. So I tell him I would like to cancel my service and he tells me that I’m still in contract and they won’t buy out my contract for rescheduling, meanwhile, because I am a new homeowner, I’m having multiple alarm companies at my door every other day WANTING to install services. So Vivint is allowed to treat their customers horrible, tell me I’m a priority but that they can’t give their technicians overtime to schedule me. If I am being rescheduled over and over and over due to their own error, why is the customer the one at their mercy? This is their fault and THEY failed ME, but I have to be punished for it because I signed a contract and no one cares.
This company only cares about your money. They don’t care about you or your family’s safety. Now that I think about it, my house fire alarms went off one night while I was out of town and they never even bothered to send anyone. This company is horrible and the customer service is atrocious. I’ve never been treated like I did not matter as much as this company has treated my family and me. I wanted everyone to know- THIS IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN YOU SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THEM. THEY WILL NOT CARE ABOUT YOU, YOUR FAMILY, OR YOUR TIME. DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO AVOID SIGNING ANY CONTRACT WITH THEM.

Not really very happy with the customer service. Product was good at the start – but have had NOTHING but trouble with the doorbell camera recordings. Totally useless at this point. It’s been close to a month since we reported the issue and unless we call them to check in there is no feedback on if and when there will ever be a resolution. Seem friendly enough – but friendly doesn’t really provide me the service I expect for the price we are paying. Offered us a $15 reduction on our next bill. Big Whoop! I just want the equipment to work the way it is supposed to. Very disappointed.

Vivint had a great sales pitch. Sales rep started with a rate of $99 but I got him to $69. Contract was for 3 years but asked if I could lock in the rate for 5 years. However, I was recently laid off from my job and asked what the cancellation policy was as I was trying to cut expenses. I still have 15 months left to the 5 years. They said they would decrease my rate but only if I extend my contract another 3 years! I said I have been having problems with some of my equipment and didn’t want to extend with poor equipment. They sent a technician. To my surprise, I found out they reused the door/window sensors from a previous provider and would not replace unless I paid for new. Said I couldn’t afford it now. So now I am still paying $69 for an insufficient system. Called again asking for help. Said they would defer payments for 3 months but would add 3 months to contract. Otherwise I may cancel by paying the remaining balance up front.($69 x 15 months) Unbelievable. Their way of helping is to get more out of you. Stay away!

I am just beginning to think about a home security system, and Vivint was the first company I looked into. First, I was a bit irritated that I couldn’t get detailed information about their products, service, plans, etc online. I had to enter my contact info and wait for a call. Five seconds after hitting “submit,” I received a phone call. The sales rep that called seemed very knowledgeable, answered all my questions, and seemed to really want to help me find a system that met my needs. But when it came time to get an estimate on their system, the hard sell began. They wouldn’t even give me a quote unless I gave them a credit card number or bank account number so they could take a “refundable” deposit. I feel like I was coerced and had my time wasted. Honestly, after thinking things over I might have actually purchased a system though Vivint, but I was so frustrated and angry after their extreme sales tactics, that there is NO WAY that I would buy from them now.

I have a system of 1 sky control, 2 window sensors, 2 outdoor cameras and 1 doorbell camera. It worked fine for a week or so after installation; however I noticed that the cameras went offline quite a bit. After weeks of rebooting the system to get it to restart, I called for tech support. Since that time, I have had 3 technicians out for a total of 16 hours. This does not include the time spent on countless phone calls with Vivint. Problems have consistently gotten worse with each visit. The cameras continue to go offline frequently and record a black screen for several hours at a time.
Vivint refuses to refund the system, so I will be out several hundred dollars. They also informed me that I will now be required to pay $50 for each service call.
This is the worst company that I have ever encountered. Save yourself the headache and go with a different security company.

We’ve had the door to door as sales guys in our neighboorhood for a few months now, and they are very pushy and don’t take no for an answer. One man actually put his foot in the way of us closing the door. They hear “no” and they just keep talking, and say things like “but wait….” they refuse to leave sometimes, Its quite ridiculous, if I were looking for a new security company, I might go elsewhere just because I don’t like their tactics.

Worst company ever!!!! System hardly ever works, especially in times that you are relying on getting a clip, of a package being taken off your door step. Contract is absolutely ridiculous. My system doesn’t work because of my internet speeds which were in place prior to vivint installing and there was no recommendation of internet speeds needing to be increased when installed. I feel that I was blind to a sales guy getting his commission and now stuck with a half a$$ system and horrible company. I I’ll do my best to tell people how much I can’t stand this company until they fix my problems.

The system had warnings and failures 50% of the time the system was in the house. Windows open, garage door open… They weren’t open and the warning tones continued. Vivint’s support team was useless, best to call my 4 year old grand daughter for support. I moved to a home with no internet service provider. I tried to cancel, but they did not believe the letters from potential ISPs. Not worth the argument and frustrating idiots that work in accounts payable and customer service. Best $700 ever spent. No more inept service, support or business teams. Horrible company, obsolete, low quality products, horrible employees.

Be careful with these guys. They are pushy and difficult all with a big ole smile. I put a deposit down thinking I wanted to work with them then changed my mind. Had to deal with some bs to get it cancelled. “Do you know what you would do if something happened to keep you safe without this system?”, “Well, my husbanc works for installation so I know how the systems protect people’s lives”, “If price is a problem I can get you a discount” – on a $850 system cost…that has “no contract” but a 60 month plan. Using fear as your tactic made me want to work with you less. Do better.

Vivint is behind in Technology. Their Sky Panel can onl y handle 2.4ghz and is not capable of handling 4 cameras. I have had them 3 years and freezing, cameras going offline, door bell camera not working. Ring door bell camera is 5ghz and works faster , need camera is 5ghz and live is faster. VIVINT three years ago was ahead of the game. THEY ARE NOW THE PAST. BUYER BEWARE, Their current panel stinks, they need a new panel that can handle all the changes. There tech’s all have said their panels cannot keep up, their contract says that cameras and other equipment is not guaranteed to work. So cameras don’t work that is to bad they sad.

They are the worst. Super awesome until you sign that contract, then they could care less. I’ve had nothing but problems with my system – faulty alarms, it’s not online half the time, camera doesn’t work usually, customer service reps are incredibly rude, and they could care less about if their customer decides to stay after the contract is up. Would not recommend this service to anyone. Also, because of their faulty installation, parts have popped off my doors/windows, and they’ve charged me to replace them. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY.
