Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a 'home automation' solution. Customers can use either Vivint's SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint's monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint's app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint's home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat.

For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue - LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract.

This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

  • Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring
  • Undisclosed Pricing
  • 5-Year Contract
  • Negative Vivint Reviews

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint's 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring.

This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately.

Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you'll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction.

Protect America doesn't have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees.

Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10.

Another point worth mentioning is Vivint's 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn't display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website.

Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing.

In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you'll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps.

In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don't fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat.

You're basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract.

And these contracts aren't too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation - which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of.

Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews.

Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company's overall score.

We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront.

The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint's home security systems may be too expensive.

Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don't tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Vivint Home Security and Smart Home Packages

Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint's Contract?

Told the salesman I wanted a stand alone unit not monitored. Just 4 cameras & door bell. I wanted something I can monitor from my phone. I agreed to pay the 1st month but wanted it cancelled immediately. 2 unauthorized charges of over $60 to pay for services I did not request. What I ended up with was not what was agreed on at my house. Did not even receive Sam's gift card as promised several times. Sam's club manager says its Vivints responsibility, Vivint says I have to take it out with Sam's as they are supposedly Sam's employees. wasted over $2k with equipment I can't monitor from my devices with there apps unless I pay their extortion money. Very deceptive, I will be contacting BBB.

great so far - love it - the tech knew what he was doing without hesitation the bad reviews are stupid as far as I'm concerned - other systems I used never called you when an alarm went off. And I didn't pay what they said and my monthly fee is lower than there's - time will tell - and as far as complaining to the company - try calling your credit card - try being smart.

Had it for 6 years, not with it. My contract kept getting auto-newed. After a year of equipment not working and them never able to fix it, we canceled our contract. I called , sent an email, they sent a confirmation email that my cancel request was received, I sent a check with a copy of that email. I put a stop payment on my bank account. A YEAR and a month later my account was debited by Vivint. I called, the rep confirmed I had canceled, paid the account off, but then said I still owed something. No. He changed his tune when I said I put a stop payment but they bypassed it by changing the amount. So now I have filed complaints at BBB and will file more. Vivint is horrible. DO NOT SIGN VIVINT'S CONTRACT OR GIVE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION. THEY WILL DEBIT YOUR ACCOUNT EVEN IF YOU CANCEL.

Purchased the equipment outright and paid 59.99 each month for monitoring. The system would barely work- can’t hear the doorbell most times and the cameras were slow to load. I called to request a cancellation after a full year of wasted money. Cancellations should have be easy since I was month to month and since the units were temperamental at best. The customer service person told me that I needed to put it in writing and 30 days later the service would be cancelled. 5 months later, 3 phone calls, 8 emails, and 4 accumulated bills, they finally closed my account. Now I have a door bell that doesn’t work, monitors through out the house, 4 cameras and a sky panel that I need to get rid of and start from scratch with a company that actually cares. What’s worse, when I called to cancel, there was zero effort to remedy my problem and keep me as a customer.

The equipment never works. I spend a lot of my time on the phone or in chat with a representative taking me through trying to fix the issues that end up never truly being resolved. I don't want to pay a company and I'm the one doing the work. The cameras don't record like they should. I don't recommend this company to anyone.

I got locked into the 5 year payment plan contract. I was very disappointed with the camera function; may times I was unable to see anything from my phone, even tho I got an alert than someone was at the door. A technician came out finally to replace the doorbell camera, but it soon quit working also. I was also very disappointed by the auto door lock; it required 4 new batteries per month at least. Vivint also had to replace a faulty thermostat. But the most frustration with Vivint has been after my contract had expired! I had finished my required contract term and wanted to cancel. Besides being tired of the high monthly fees, we were moving out of the house to Fort Worth, and I wasn't going to transfer the service...I was DONE with Vivint! That was at the beginning of Oct 2019, and I jumped thru their legal hoops for emailing the cancellation request and everything else, and was told it had been approved, and that my automatic billing would stop.... NOT!!!! It's been six months now, and just about every month, after my bank account gets hit by another monthly bill! I called Vivint, spend at least half an hour explaining their stupidity, waiting for them to review my records, talk to their supervisors, validating my claims, making more notes on their computer, and having them e-mail me a statement to that effect before I hang up, with the PROMISE that it's all been taken care of this time, my account is cancelled, and that I should be getting a refund check in the mail in about 7-14 days. Well guess what! Six month's later, I STILL have no refund, and I'm still getting billed again, for a "service" I've cancelled 6 months ago! So, here it's the 18th of the month again, and I've been billed now for yet another month, didn't get my refund yet, and so now it's that time again to call Vivint ONCE AGAIN!!!! Am I going to have to get a lawyer to get their attention!!?? DON'T SIGN UP WITH VIVINT!! THEY ARE NOT HONEST; THEY JUST RIP YOU OFF!! signed, FRUSTRATED PAULSON

I ordered the system, asked for the monthly financing. I got the hit on my credit, and they charged me full price anyway. When I called in to get them to refund my credit card, I was told that accounting was not in on Saturdays, yet my card was charged on Saturday. I called back Monday, 2-3 times, and no one could help me. I called again on Tuesday, spoke with several different people who also could not help me. By then I was frustrated, asked to speak to a supervisor, but no supervisor would talk to me, since I was frustrated. On Wednesday, I spoke with an agent, he even gave me his agent number, when I called back, I was told I could not be connected to that agent. Spoke to 2 more people, until finally, I gave up and cancelled the service. They never sent me my contract, they apparently had the wrong email address, yet the technician who came to my home, verified it with my twice. Only at the point that I cancelled my service, did anyone call me to "offer customer service" at this point, not only do I want NOTHING to do with this company, I only want people to know my experience. It took several more days for my refund to come in. I have yet to have their system removed. They took my original thermostat with them, so they better plan on bringing me a new one. I would never recommend them to anyone. BEWARE

I called vivint after being refered by a friend. I called serveral times because it seems as if each representive was giving me different pricing. I wanted be sure about what I was getting myself into. I scheduled the install, the installer name was Robin he was very professional and on time. He arrived at 8am after going over everything the pricing was off from what I was told. Robin call the office and got everything situated so we can move forward. The problem was he could not get his computer to reflex the pricing that was just told to us both. Robin called back all for a manger to tell us she could not honer the price that was just given to us both and her quote was the final one. Robin did his best to rectify the situation because we had both heard the pricing. In any case I ended up cancelling the install and will have to find another company. I am a business owner and was planing on referring all of my clients and family members to vivint but I will tell them not to bother. I felt bad Robin wasted 3 hours here all for nothing.

This security system and company are scam artist. Their Customer Service sucks! My mother (who is a strike victim and suffers from seizures) has been a customer since 2015. When given the opportunity to upgrade in March 2020 she thought why not. 4 Technicians, a large pack of AA batteries, and a brand new thermostat that causes the AC to go offline EVERYWEEK later we are now stuck with the seemingly incompetent customer service who is ok with a disable person dying in her own home due to lack of air. I used their service for about a year. The app tended to crash frequently and the sensors were unreliable. Getting a technician to come to the house required an ultimatum of ‘send out a technician or I will cancel my policy’. Finally after comparing their monthly fee with our level of satisfaction we cancelled. The following month we were billed for their monitoring service. Upon calling the company I found my account still open as if nothing had changed only to be informed that I now needed to send in written direction to cancel my account! I was not told anything about sending in written instructions during the first call. Overall this company was difficult to deal with and not worth the expense.

Have been trying to cancel my account since August. Even paid a large fee (nearly $1,000) to get out of my auto renewing contract. When I first canceled my account they said I was good to go. Fast forward to February and I receive a call that my account balance is low. I explain to the rep that I canceled in August. He sees the large payment on my account and it turns out it was applied as a credit and not as a cancellation fee and that that amount had been going toward my monthly fee even though I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO SERVICE OR EQUIPMENT. The rep said it was Vivints oversight and that he would take care of it, I didn’t have to do anything. Today, April 7th, I receive another call from Vivint that I now have an overdue balance. I explain for the third time that I canceled my account last August and paid the fee. The person said they don’t have record of a written notice of cancelation, and unless I can prove it to them I owe them an additional $159 dollars as my account is overdue. I explain that I canceled in august, and said that I confirmed it again in feb, when I was told it was Vivints error and there was nothing more I needed to do. I also reminded them that I had absolutely no equipment at my new home, so a system wouldn’t even work. It fell on deaf ears. So I am still trying to cancel my account 6 months later. Not to mention all the tech problems I had while I was a customer. If you want good efficient customer service and don’t like being ripped off, keep looking for a different company.

Absolutely terrible and dishonest company. Vivint was partnering with Best Buy when we found out about them. We liked the fact that they said if we bought the equipment up front (we spent about $2000) that there would never be a contract and we could have it monitored if we wanted for $30/month, or we could call and skip the monitoring and not pay anything. I called to say we did not want the monitoring but was told I would not have access to the app on my phone if I did that. What's the point of a smart security system if you can't access it anytime or anywhere! Extremely disappointed with their customer service and lack of honesty. Let us start at the beginning. In 2015 I started my service with Vivint in my old home. Everything went great there. I was looking at moving and made sure I could move my service without any issues which Vivint customer service told me I could. They advised that the new owner of my old house could take over service and payments for the equipment there as well. When I moved I had a whole new system set up at my new house, leaving the old equipment behind and convincing the new owners to keep Vivint since I had no issues with them. For several months after setting up my new account and transferring my old one I was being charged for both accounts. I called to have this rectified which they did for a few months until the charges started again. I called again to explain the issues to which I was told that I was given the wrong information and that I would still need to pay off the old equipment. Needless to say this did not sit well since I was lied to by Customer Service again, once during install and once when I called to ask about the move. After awhile going back and forth with "Customer Service" I was finally refunded the money which they had taken for the old account. Now at the new house I have had issues with connectivity and equipment failing to work as advertised. I called for a new door sensor since mine stopped working, even with new batteries. I was told they were on back order and I'd have to wait for it to be shipped. Now a year and a half later I'm still waiting. My DVR/Smart Drive function stopped working as well with no warning. Lucky for me I had two incidents on my property during the time that it was down and no recording was captured. When I contacted "Customer Service" I was told it was a problem on my end, not their equipment. I didn't change anything with the Smart Drive and did all the troubleshooting they advised and it's still my fault that it doesn't work. I wasn't even offered a home call for a tech to come out and fix the issue. More recently the Covid pandemic has impacted me and my family, through health and financially. I'm have lost half of my family income due to the virus and there is no reprieve in site. On Vivint's Cancellation Policy page it states: "At Vivint, we understand that sometimes the unexpected happens. We also know that when the unexpected happens, changes must be made in your life. Because of that, Vivint is proud to offer a cancellation policy that is sensitive to unfortunate circumstances. If a death, bankruptcy, transition to an assisted living home, or other extenuating circumstance is the reason for your decision to cancel Vivint, please call 1-800-216-5232 x5020 for assistance." After having contacted them the only relief they can offer is a few months without payment. They refuse to cancel a policy due to an extenuating circumstance which is out of all of our control, world wide. Being a first responder with a wife who was also on the front line of the virus in her field of work I am appalled with the way this company is treating its customers. It seems like all they want is the money. No care for the individuals who keep them in business.

My husband and I are military and moved to Florida last year. We called to have our services cancelled once we made it to Florida and I was told that we were good to go. This was last year in November. Fast forward to now we got a bill saying we owed money. Confused as to why I am getting charged, I call back and Vivint says we owe them since we never stopped our service with them. I told them the entire story of me talking with someone and cancelling and they told me that it never happened and that their employee had told me she had deferred my payments by two months instead......so I asked to hear the phone call, they told me I couldn't listen to it unless I took legal action. So now we are stuck paying a bill for service we did not receive. I will never use this company again. Absolute horrible service and customer care!!! Especially during a time where we only have one person working in the household due to the virus and what's currently happening. If your thinking of using Vivint, look somewhere else. The installation was incomplete, and within days the system components started to signal failure or issues. Two missed appointments by the installer plus 2 additional missed appointments made through the Vivint Customer Service Department. Promises to call back after my installation was labeled "prioirity" did not occur. Installed equipment failed to work as described by the installer. Vivint was very responsive when it came to the credit card charges - they get a "10" for ensuring they got paid!

I agree 100% with you!! Vivint service sucks! They are so wonderful before signing up.. but inece technician leaves ohhh you are in for a horrible experience!!! I disputed account with my credit card company and I am hoping I will get a refund. I paid equipment in full $1500 but it is the cheapest equipment and doesn't work. I reached out to them to get them to come fix equipment and they said all I needed was an update etc... long story short 2 m they didn't fix any of the issues so I contacted my credit card company and disputed charge, now I am trying to return equipment but Vivint says it's mine to keep and refuse to give return address. I have called several times differenti depts. Until finally a representative told me We will email you a return label, check your spam and inbox and I did and nothing was ever emailed. I called again and they said there were no notes of anything or anyone to send a label via email, they are liars!!! So if anyone has the return equipment address please share, I want nothing to do with these Liars, thiefs.

Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had with any home alarm system company. the sales person was over promise and under delivery, I have been billed 3 times more than I was suppose to pay and when I went to billing history there were no detail indicate why the bill has been that high. had a very bad installation, when I call in for assistance seems like they don’t know how to fix it over The phone but if they send a technician I will have to pay $129. I am so mad with this unethical company and even more mad with myself cause I still have 4 years left on a contract, I will definitely cancel it after this COVID-19 situation and I don’t recommend anyone to get any service from this company.

I wish there was something worse than 1 star to give Vivint Security. I was going out of town and looking to get a security system, when someone from Vivint knocked on my door around 8:30 at night. They give you a lot of information, but not the details that may cause you not to choose them, or at least take some time to think about their 'tonight only offer'. I've had problems from the very beginning with the cameras going offline, the security screen freezing and the front camera recording randomly. I called in today to see if I can suspend by service for 3 months and found out my contract is for 5 years, which was not disclosed. It turns out they make your contact the same length of the bank loan for the equipment. They will defer my service for three months, but will add those three months to the end of my 5 years. It was $1800 if I wanted to cancel altogether. Then they kept me on hold for a period of time like they're trying to work something out, only to tell me there's nothing they can do. I gave them a choice - either suspend my service for 3 months or defer it with the understanding I will find every opportunity available to write a review on how they do business on top of how bad their equipment/service is. So here I am sharing my experience. Since it's getting close to the time of year when Vivint will begin sending people out, hopefully people will read these reviews before they sign on the dotted line for anything with Vivint Security. Also, if you already know you have issues with your wi-fi signal, then it's definitely not worth the money to invest in a Vivint system.

The install was completely unprofessional and the sales tactic was very shady and the guy even joked and laughed at how they trick people. Install took a very long time 4 guys walking in and out of my house. One broke my ceiling drywall. Left wires everywhere. The wiring in the attic is absolutely messy and dangerous. Caught one of them in a room that had a closed door videotaping my pet.

This has to be the worst company out here. Before signing up they make you do a video basically promoting them. I started having problems about a month after they left. It's been malfunctioning every since (a year and a half). You can forget about any technical support coming to help.

I did not have knowledge of their 5 year contract. They have yet to send me a requested copy of the contract. I became a customer in 2014 and when I called asking to change my plan they claim I agreed to a 5 year extension of my contract. However, I deny such agreement and asked that they send me poof such as a document or recorded copy. The service rep put me on hold to do so then came back saying the file was too large to send and that their policies have changed and can no longer send that information. How convenient. My system has not been working for over a year. They came once and never finished the job. When I called again, no one ever came. The person helping me today seemed to be asleep or just waking up at 1:00 pm. No customer service skills what-so-ever!

Felt like we were scammed, Horrible equipment, terrible customer service, and they took money out of my account and said they where going to put it back in because they were crediting us 2 months and instead they took the money out anyway and then said they are charging us twice a month for 1. for service and the other for equipment, one amount is coming out of my account and 2. the other is coming out of my husbands account, I'm calling the bank they won't get anther out of mine.
