Vivint SmartHome Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

Month-to-Month Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

The company sends out alerts via their Vivint Smart Home app. If your alarm goes off, their professionals will call you and assess your situation. This system integrates with Google Home, Amazon Echo, Nest, Element, and Phillips.

How Do I Cancel Vivint?

To cancel your monitoring contract with Vivint, you will need to send in a written request that includes your name, address, and account number. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

    I purchased equipment up front from Vivint. It worked reasonably well for several months. Then connection problems started as well as false alarms and poor response to functions. I contacted customer service for help. They sent a technician to evaluate the problem who told me the system was not compatible with my radiant barrier insulation. When I contacted customer service about returning the equipment and canceling the service, they mysteriously could find no record or the technician they sent to the home that noted a radiant barrier problem. The system continued to work poorly and Vivint repeatedly sent someone to fix the problem. They could never make the system work well. They refused to take the equipment back and charged me for nearly a year of service they could not provide due to the system not functioning. I finally cancelled all together and have all of the useless equipment to this day. I would never recommend Vivint to anyone

    Had Vivint for 4 years and wanted additional cameras technician and technician stated he siding want to work hard and since my system majority of the time works on WiFi he stated it was illegally operating due to minimum cell support and started the deactivation of my account and stated that my home wasn’t able to receive the service it has had for four years. Moving on and not looking back to Vivint.

    Stay away from this company! They said the cover the Cancellation fees from your old system. BS.! They lie and over promise. Plus the system doesn’t work after 3 service calls.

    We got Vivint in 2014 because they offered a good security system with great programmable thermostats, etc that you can monitor over your phone. At the time, it was GREAT. Well a lot changes in 60 months, their standard contract duration. We sold our house, which we put a 4 month hold on our account. When they came out to do our install, because of our new updated HVAC system, we could not use the thermostats. The installer just put in the alarm system, went over our new pricing structure, that was the end. Our renewal date was July 1, 2019, plainly stated in our documents. WELLLL, because of the new pricing, it locked us in for another 60 months, WHICH WAS NOT EXPLAINED NOR MENTIONED!!!! BEWARE!!!

    After knocking on my 89 year old mother’s door, the vivint rep convinced her that a security system was what she needed to help her keep track of her husband who suffers from dementia. He also said he would extend the usual 3 day trial period to 30 days to make sure she was happy with the system. My Mom’s husband was placed in an assisted living facility 2 weeks later and when she tried to get the Rep and the company to honor their 30 day trial period and remove the system, she was told someone would call her back. THEY NEVER DID. I would not trust anyone from this company. She is now stuck with a 60 month contract that she most likely will have to buy herself out of. In my opinion….ELDER ABUSE!

    My control panel has issues with batteries, the app is slow to load, the cameras go out often, they screwed up my outside wall installing the camera and left an ugly 2×3 area of caulking to fill it. Worst part is not being able to cancel. Stay away!

    I have been talking to tyler and Valeria who set up an appointment for a tech to come in to install a ring camera and the alarm system. They charged my account for 24.99 for the tech to come out which was refundable based on the texts I have from them. The tech came and no knowledge of what he is was suppose to do and pricing was way off,. I asked for a refund and still they have not refunded my money,.Use less customer service and very un organized.

    STAY AWAY!!! PRODUCT WORKS HALF THE TIME. VIVINT WILL NOT LET YOU OUT OF CONTRACT WHEN IT’S THEIR FAULT AND THEIR PRODUCT DOESN’T WORK. CUSTOMER SERVICE USUALLY UNSURE HOW TO FIX PROBLEMS.     Our salesman promised us no cancellation fees after the initial 3 years of our contract. the company is refusing to honor that agreement. Our initial contract agreement is not available on the account page, they purposely attempt to obfuscate terms and contract details, in an attempt to confuse and ultimately ensure payment of cancellation fees.

    Was a customer for 9 years! Why? Well to get out of the contract is horrible! The entire time my bill was wrong every month! Good thing I kept track or how much money would I have over paid! You can’t pay through online banking even though they kept saying I could or it was coming. We went to Banff for a weekend, my neighbor contacted me to tell me my alarm was going off for almost 3 hours! They never called, just taking the 74 bucks a month and not monitoring my house??? Their customer service is horrible, technology is crap! I unhooked it a year ago and nothing changed or happened on my panel. No cameras were ever received except for one you plug in and put on a table….oooh makes me feel secure! Save your money don’t fall for the pushy sales loser at the door and go with someone else!! Worst experience ever!

    Sales Representative ZACK in Virginia Beach should not be trusted. After his sales pitch he mentioned the necessity for a soft credit check being needed for pre-qualification, turns out, he submitted the credit inquiry as if we agreed to purchase the equipment and service. A HARD Credit Inquiry was reported by my credit monitoring system, not only on mine, but my wife as well without either of our permission. I will be looking into filing an information security investigation and possibly file a law suite due to breech of identity. I also, will contact all my friends, family, neighbors and the local military bases on these sketchy sales tactics.

    I switched from ADT to Vivint and have had poor experiences so far. I have had the system for a little over a month and I am still trying to get the billing situation corrected. I received an initial quote and after everything was installed I was billed hundreds of dollars more than what I was quoted. I have talked to several people over the past month and they just can’t get it right. After transferring me to several people, and me sending emails of the quote that I originally received, it has not gotten fixed. It’s ridiculous…

    If you need home security system DO NOT use Vivint for your service they are a joke.

    I was misinformed about my service cancelation when I spoke with agent Kelly M over chat through my vivint app. I was told to send an email and the sevice would be canceled within 30 days. I did as I was instructed and sent the email and call to follw up where I was them and was informed I needed to pay a $1000 to cancel by customer service. I ask for customer loyalty and William told me I owe over $1500 to cancel cause I had to buy out this ridiculous 5 year contract at over 60 a month, which I had only paid 3 years of, at the amount of over $2100. I feel this should be canceled in 30 days as I was told would happen with the first agent I spoke with through my app chat. The supervisor over customer loyalty said I could pay $800 and be good. As a company they are way more expensive than any other monitoring service that can do exactly what they have done. I will never recommend or use vivint again for home monitoring. I have paid faithfully every month for 3 years and I got a wall monitor and a doorbell camera and a few window sensors, they used most of the old sensors that were in my home at install. I have paid over 60 a month for 3 years (over $2100) and somehow figure I still owe $1500 more to buy out you my contract. This company is ripping people off with that service and cost. I will also be making a formal complaint to the BBB about this. I have the messages the agent sent me saying I needed to send and email and call to confirm and my account would be canceled with in 30 days, not one time mentioning me owing any amount or having to buy out any contract.

    From Day #1 this system has had issues, from Camera’s not working, Replacing my panel, removing doorbell camera, etc…etc… you name it. Complete Garbage.

    Service Calls (Which you pay for) often get cancelled just hours prior. Doesn’t really matter though. They never fix problem. I am stuck for another 2.5 years with them.

    Will probably just pay off my contract early and move back to ADT

    Horrible company. When moving or trying to cancel the service they claim there is a contract that has been “signed” any time you call or get an additional sensor that renews for 2 years. Then if you want to cancel the service you have to pay your ENTIRE contract cost to get out.

    I have tried to cancel my contract twice. Both times the “end date” of my contract magically was 27 months in the future. Absolute scam.

    Unfortunately after my husband and I bought our first house we had a vivint rep come to our door and we stupidly signed up. We had issues with our alarm going off in our garage for no reason at all hours of the night. We called and they sent a tech over to take a look at our issue. He said it was just a low battery and was going to charge us to replace a new battery! We ended up using one of our own batteries (size AA) so we wouldn’t get charged $10. Ridiculous! Especially since we were paying them $60 a month already.
    Now it’s been a few years and our contract is up. I will NEVER go with vivint again. The customer service, quality of product and fees are all ridiculously stupid.
    Now of course they’re coming door to door again and I immediately shut them down and tell them I’m not interested but they don’t care. I had 3 different reps come to my house all within the same day. Today the rep that came actually had the nerve to make fun of me as I’m standing there telling him to get off my property and my infant in my arms is spitting up on me. Real nice!
    The company itself, the fees, the contracts, the sales reps…. all a bunch of junk.
    I would recommend a piece of paper saying “please go away” over anything from vivint as a security system.
