The Good

  • Solid Home Automation Features
  • No Upfront Fees
  • Variety of Security Equipment

Solid Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

No Upfront Fees

Unlike many home security companies, Vivint does not charge any upfront fees for its security systems. This makes signing up for Vivint’s services more affordable. This can also provide peace of mind to potential customers that they don’t have to put down a hefty down payment in order to receive Vivint’s security services.

Variety of Security Equipment

Vivint has various home security solutions with a variety of equipment available. Depending on your home security package, offered equipment will vary, but Vivint has multiple security plans to choose from. Some of Vivint’s offered security equipment and smart home products include:

  • Doorbell Camera
  • Outdoor Camera with Night Vision
  • Indoor Camera
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Smart Door Locks
  • Motion Sensors
  • Motion Detectors
  • Panic Pendant
  • Garage Door Opener
  • Vivint Smartphone App
  • Smart Light Switches

The Bad

  • High Monthly Monitoring Fees
  • 60-Month Contract
  • Customer Service Complaints
  • Negative Vivint Reviews
  • Moving Fee May Apply

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up based on a variety of additional package options. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Customer Service Complaints

Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices and slow technician response times. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Moving Fee May Apply

If you want a Vivint specialist to remove your home security system, you have to pay a fee $129. However, if you opt to remove the equipment yourself, the fee may not apply. Vivint suggests looking through the SkyControl instructions to remove correctly. You also have to pay an additional fee of $129 to reinstall the equipment into your new location.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out Vivint reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you.

Protect American has the highest customer rating on our site.

The Bottom Line

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. We recommend more affordable options that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Horrible customer service!! My door lock stopped working and it took them over a month to get it fixed and charged me shipping on it when they said they wouldn’t. Called back to find out why I was charged when I was told I wouldn’t be, and they just said it’s not in the notes so they can’t waive it

I would not even give them one star, but we have had our system for about a year now and everything was working fine for the first couple weeks. Then like 2-3 of my cameras stopped working. It was the cameras I needed the most due to some theft going on at my business. I contacted Vivint and all they could tell me was my network was not big enough to keep all of my cameras going. NO ONE told me this before I purchased them nor did they tell me this when they were setting them up. PLUS THEY ALL WORKED FINE IN THE BEGINNING. I can’t even set my alarm on my bussiness because they can’t even figure out how to keep them set for the WIND BLOWING. Can’t believe they do not have a better set up for bussinesses. I can’t even do anything about it because I have a 5 year contract with them, so I stuck paying on something that doesn’t even work. DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!

We have had the Vivint system for 2 years. The customer service is horrible, one night we had an issue with the cameras called customer service, we were advised that Vivint now has cs department in Jamaica!

The Sky panel has been replaced 3 times, cameras are usually off line. When we originally purchased the system the salesman pitched that we buy 5 outdoor cameras for maximum protection. Now Vivint has disconnected one and now tells us that their panels can only handle 4 cameras!

We are going to take the loss, and terminate our service and get a new security system with more effective cameras. Just can’t put up with the Vivint BS

Run away from this company. The sales reps will straight up lie to you about the contract policies and the equipment works until there’s an update, then you have to call a technician to come out and manually update it to get it back up again.

Our sales rep informed us we could cancel at any time for a small fee. Turns out, you have to pay off the entire contract to cancel (which means you can’t really cancel). They also told us if we moved that they would reinstall the equipment in our new house for free. When we moved for the military, they informed us it was going to cost over $700 for new equipment and installation. Equipment only work about 25% of the time because of updates constantly kicking it off the network.

The customer service is atrocious and they constantly lie about the contents of their agreements. Be sure to hire a lawyer to read the contracts before signing.

I purchased my system about a year ago and for the most part have been extremely happy with it. it’s just a small things that turn into big things when they’re tech support doesn’t handle a problem correctly the first time and you have to keep calling them back over and over again to come back and fix the problem. first problem I had was the sensor that is mounted next to the hard-wired smoke detector in the house supposed to send a signal to the panel when that smoke detector goes off indicating to Vivint monitor that there’s a fire in the house. well they didn’t take into consideration that when one wired smoke detector goes off usually two or three more go off of with it and the echo especially in the hallway tricks their monitor into believing it was a false alarm and it did not indicate a fire. this should have been something the tech installing it should have realized from the very beginning and not install the sensor. I got them out to fix it or replace it and they installed a battery powered smoke detector 6in away from the wired smoke detector and everything tested okay A month later that same wired smoke detector went off because I burned something in the oven but there smoke detector did not go off I called their tech support they couldn’t figure it out and somehow we lost connection the phone went dead without calling me back they sent me a replacement smoke detector with no instructions as to how or what to do with it then I got a bill for $113 for that smoke detector I’ve called them three separate times in the last week and have two weeks to get this resolved gotten different stories from every single one of them had them send me a return shipment label to return the piece of equipment back to them and the label was addressed to me so if I would have slapped that label on threw it in the mail it would have came back to me 2 days later I finally got hold of a supervisor and explained all this to her and she said oh don’t worry about it we don’t sell return defective smoke detectors just throw it away and I tried to explain to her that her employees must up the shipping label and she needs to look at it she didn’t care I finally got so frustrated I hung up on her so they’re customer service really sucks

I haven’t had much trouble with my system. However a rude, pushy sales kid came around recently saying I could get an upgrade for less money per month. He tried to make me believe that Vivint was doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. Yeah…right. I got rid of him finally but he showed up again the next day! This time I started to sign just to get rid of the creep knowing that I had 3 days to cancel. They wanted my SS # and annual income. The sales creep said it was just to verify who I was. I knew that was a lie and that it was to run a credit check, Why is it necessary to credit check on someone who has been a customer for 3 years! I won’t go into all the other lies he told because it would make the review too long. I called Vivint and actually found out I could get exactly what he was offering for half the price. Beware of the shady door-to-door sales people. They lie big time!!!!

THIS COMPANY IS PREDATORY. DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT W THEM. The service works well, the sales guy was very deceptive regarding the actual cost of the system. They told us we were receiving parts for free as a promo, turns out this was a lie. Trying to end the contract early was confusing and the employees gave many different numbers.

I Am close to the end of my contract and am so happy about it !!! If you move and need your system transferred it is 120 for them to come and take it down and another 120 to get it reinstalled after being told no worries when you move we movie it no hassle …. YEAH RIGHT ! Needless to say I am a nurse not techy at all … well let me tell you if you purchase this product you will spent countless hours YouTube videos or on the phone with customer service and tool trying to get your cameras to function. Properly !!! THEY ARE ALWAYS OFF LINE . All there products are great in theory !! Big thumbs down

I wish there was an option for a negative stars.

Don’t waste your money on this company! Customer service sucks. I would be on hold for 15 minutes and finally was so frustrated that I would hang up. I would try to go on their chat option, but could not get any help there either.

Vivint is raising prices in April 2019, which is breaking the contracted price. I told them if they break the contract by charging more, then let me out of mine. They REFUSE to let me out of my contract. Absolutely HORRIBLE company. From payment plans, to customer service.

I’ve used Vivint for 6 years and have not had a single issue with any of their equipment. I find all the complaints astonishing. I think much has to do with the concept of paying for equipment when it comes to cancellation. Their system is very simple to operate and set up so a tech really isn’t generally required. I’ve had 100 percent success with their phone support / customer service. The monthly cost for most is largely related to buying their equipment on the payment plan (that is why termination is so high). And no, I’m not a company shill.

My door lock has not worked well from almost the get-go. The first time I called about they walked me through a long process to check it, and then determined I needed a new door lock, and that they would send me one.
Weeks went by and it had not arrived, so I called to inquire. I was told for some reason it did not get approved and sent. (FRUSTRATING!) Therefore they said they would send one right away.
Imagine my surprise then after more weeks went by and it sitll had not arrived. Had to call once more to have them say they dont know why it hasnt shipped to me. But they would be happy to ship one out. THis has been months of an improperly working door knob, and at least 2 months of zero use of it- extremely hard for a busy family. They did not seem to care that much, and did not offer any other solutions then to ship again.
I have zero faith it will actually be shipped, and I am stuck with a door lock that doesnt work, and paying for services that are not being met. They will not let me out of my contract without paying out the items- I am stuck with them. I will be cancelling as soon as I can. I do not recommend this company to anyone!!!

I have complained since day 1 on my cameras not recording. Their answer is that my internet is slow Wi-Fi. I say you knew that when you was checking to see if it would support Vivint’s system, instead you installed it sticking me with a crappie 5 year contract.

This system has NOT worked properly since we first purchased it. We have had to call customer service numerous times for them to try to fix the system . Have had numerous service request still not working. The wont to credit your bill instead of sending the right person out. The Tech put hole in door. I had to pay some to fix. This is a rip off . It is not worth your time or money
