The Good

  • Solid Home Automation Features
  • No Upfront Fees
  • Variety of Security Equipment

Solid Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

No Upfront Fees

Unlike many home security companies, Vivint does not charge any upfront fees for its security systems. This makes signing up for Vivint’s services more affordable. This can also provide peace of mind to potential customers that they don’t have to put down a hefty down payment in order to receive Vivint’s security services.

Variety of Security Equipment

Vivint has various home security solutions with a variety of equipment available. Depending on your home security package, offered equipment will vary, but Vivint has multiple security plans to choose from. Some of Vivint’s offered security equipment and smart home products include:

  • Doorbell Camera
  • Outdoor Camera with Night Vision
  • Indoor Camera
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Smart Door Locks
  • Motion Sensors
  • Motion Detectors
  • Panic Pendant
  • Garage Door Opener
  • Vivint Smartphone App
  • Smart Light Switches

The Bad

  • High Monthly Monitoring Fees
  • 60-Month Contract
  • Customer Service Complaints
  • Negative Vivint Reviews
  • Moving Fee May Apply

High Monthly Monitoring Fees

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up based on a variety of additional package options. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Customer Service Complaints

Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices and slow technician response times. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Moving Fee May Apply

If you want a Vivint specialist to remove your home security system, you have to pay a fee $129. However, if you opt to remove the equipment yourself, the fee may not apply. Vivint suggests looking through the SkyControl instructions to remove correctly. You also have to pay an additional fee of $129 to reinstall the equipment into your new location.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out Vivint reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you.

Protect American has the highest customer rating on our site.

The Bottom Line

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. We recommend more affordable options that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Would strongly recommend to look into other security systems that work better and are dramatically more affordable. A 3-5 year contract is ridiculous and the cost is significantly greater than other systems such as the Ring security system which works great and costs $10 per month with NO contract.

Called to cancel on phone but couldn’t do that as needed to make sure cancelled the right account. Had to send an email. No response back from them that they got it so had to call again. The first person said I would get a refund as they had just taken money out on the 15th. When called back the second time I was told no refund as I had to give 30 day notice. I had let my contract expire as I wanted away from this company. They raised bill 3 dollars as I wouldn’t renew contract. I would never use this company again or recommend them. All they care about is the money.

Watch out! Their salesmen promise more than they can deliver. I have no system, the address they gave me to ask for a refund is “undeliverable” according to the post office and I still don’t have a refund! Buyer beware.

always had issues with this system since day one. Costs too much money. Too long of a contract. Even had to drop one of our cameras so it can possibly work better but still pay for it. Wish I had went back with ADT. Need to cancel service without paying anything. Guess I need to contact BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU.

Dang near impossible to cancel. My cameras go offline a lot, my app is super slow to open even in GREAT service area. Someone can ring the doorbell and by the time the app opens they are gone….this is EVERY SINGLE TIME. My cameras seem to “detect” motion every minute, no way to reduce sensitivity….makes it hard to sift through hours of BS to see who actually came by my house. i can open a door and not get a notification that a door is open for 15 minutes. all in all just not satisfied for what I pay.

They use deceptive sales tactics, customer service is a joke, the system worked fine the first month but after having it for 8 months we’ve had numerous technicians come out to our house with sub par results. The camera had been worked on twice, people can come in through the front door before there is an alert. If you call for a technician you have to wait before they come out but you are expected to pay for the service regardless if it works. This is a very shady company, too expensive considering more affordable and more reliable services out there. This is a big rip off and buyers would be wise to stay away. We thought we were getting a reliable service and all we’ve received is overpriced equipment that won’t work without monitoring after you finish paying it off. Look elsewhere for service.

THE WORST SYSTEM I HAVE HAD. SYSTEM WHEN AWAY FROM HOME DOES NOT LOAD OF CELL PHONE WITH A ANDROID OR A IPHONE AND THE BEST PICK US SERVICE THERE IS SO IF HOUSE DOES GET BROKEN INTO YOU ARE UNAWARE OF IT. EACH SERVICE CALL COST THE CUSTOMER 49.99 DOLLARS TO UPDATE THERE SYSTEM SO IT WORKS WHILE REPAIRMAN IS THERE THEN TWO DAYS LATER IT IS NOT WORKING AGAIN. DOOR BELL RINGS ON OUTSIDE MOST OF THE TIME BUT NOT INSIDE YOUR HOUSE AND CAMERA DOES NOT COME ON SO YOU KNOW THERE AT THE DOOR. MOVEMENT PRTECTION AT NIGHT KEEPS GOING OFF AND NO ONE MOVING IN THE HOUSE. EACH CALL OR SERVICE CALL OUT IS THE SAME B.S. STORY THAT THE SYSTEM JUST NEEDED UPDATING. AND IF YOU CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES ON THE SYSTEM IT SETS OFF THE LOW BATTERY DETECTION AND NO RESET AT THE HOUSE SO THERE GOES ANOTHER 49.99 FOR THEM TO COME UPDATE THE SYSTEM AND RESET IT SO ALARMS STOP GOING OFF OF LOW BATTERY. ONCE IT GOES OFF THERE IS NO GETTING AROUND A SERVICE CALL. NOT HAPPY AT ALL WITH THIS SYSTEM.

Do not buy this product. The system itself is ok, however they are the most inflexible company out there. I have been with them for three years already and need to cancel. My living situation has changed and I have had some difficult times. The $70 a month I pay them is huge right now. To cancel I need to pay them $2700.. The product itself has already been paid off, however they expect you to pay out the remainder of the contact. The sales people do not tell you this at time of purchase.Unless you have claimed bankrupcty or die you’re are screwed

This company is the worse. Huge upfront fees and huge penalty fee if you want to cancel the service. Forget trying to get a tech to service your equipment once you’ve signed the dotted line and the system is installed. My cameras will do numerous clips of nothing on windy days but someone can walk right in front of the camera and the camera won’t capture the image. Don’t bother with this company. ADT and SafeGuard are must better quality security systems and have much better customer service. I can’t wait until my contract is up with this lousy company. One last thing- the company installed my doorbell and it rang outside. This company is a joke.

This company illegally debited my savings account for a year and I cancelled my service the day of the installation and told the installer to leave after drilling multiple holes in my siding to put up a camera that I never requested and missed locating it twice. The installer was violent and angry And I demanded he stop the installation and leave my home. Before he would leave my home he told me that he could not leave until he cleared the code out of my phone to complete his installation. I fearfully handed him my phone and let him get whatever he needed to and said now please leave.I had asked Nate the installer to please give me the name and phone number to Vivint and cancel my account and have them come pick up all their belongings. Nate the installer let me know that he was the boss and there was no one above him and that if I wanted to reach the company there was no phone number and you had to go online and request a call back As soon He left I went to the security panel and had them help me reset all of my alarm codes as I was deathly afraid of what their technician may come back and do knowing all of the passwords and codes to my home now. It took multiple calls and complaints to try to get someone’s attention I told them that I wanted to cancel my account and they said due to the damage that was done to my home they were going to put me on a three month free trial and would not charge me anything but if they close the account I wouldn’t be able to file the insurance claim for The damage to my home and siding to be fixed. They sent several technicians out to take photos of the damage to my home and remove their equipment. They had realize that the technician had taken my very expensive door hardware and my doorbell and so they told me they apologize that I could not get my original belongings back And they would let me keep the doorbell camera and the deadbolt key pad for free. I was just glad they came and retrieved their stuff out of here And I was rid of them. No one ever came back to fix my home I still have the holes in the back of my house with big gobs putty oozing out of the poorly patched holes. About a year later I had went to take some money out of my savings account and realize that there was an automatic debit coming out of my account for $70 a month in researching this auto debit I found that it was Vivent home security Vivint To make things even worse they had been doing it since they tried to come out and install my security system. To make things worse they told me that I had given them a rave review for the installation… Which I later found out was a code that was text or emailed to your phone while the installer is finishing and before they leave they are supposed to ask you to retrieve this code out of your phone and then hand you their iPad where you take a survey and enter this code. Yes this is the same code that he stole out of my phone that I knew nothing about and filled out a great survey for himself. The company fought and argued that it was me that filled out the survey and that there was no way that their technician could’ve gotten that code. I said you know that I Stopped the install and made him leave!? I was terrified and changed all the codes on my door why in the world would I give him a rave review? To make things even worse when I thought that I was rid of this horrible company and they had been drafting my account every single month for a year they then proceeded to tell me that I had signed a contract. I let them know I refuse signature and matter of fact I even wrote on the contract while the technician was here that I refuse to sign anything and wanted to manager to call me immediately rather then signing anything. They sent me a contract with some crazy signature that was nothing like my signature and tried to tell me that it was me I explain to them that I’ve been asked signing with my same signature for years end it looks nothing like my signature not even my initials. As a further investigate I see that there are tons of people that have had their signatures forge by the security company. This is a company that is supposed to be protecting us and our family and our valuables!!?? This is absurd they burn time by telling you to send in pictures and that they’re going to send out an insurance adjuster to do repairs waste another six months and then say that you signed a contract and that they’re turning you into collections etc. etc. I am glad that I’m not alone in this matter but it’s terrifying how many people have had their names forged by Vivent security. VIVINT HOME SECURITY Is Run corruptly and buy a bunch of criminals if you are interested in joining a class action suit and this has happened to you too. Please reach out to me

I am a new Vivint customer. I must say that I don’t understand scheduling an appointment for 6pm with a customer and not meet the scheduled appointment. We waited and then called Vivint and was on hold for at least 30 minutes while waiting on a supervisor to activate the service. The rep came back on the line and said that they would call in 10 minutes. If this is the kind of response and service Vivint gives, I don’t want it. I made my payment with no problem, but now I’m wondering if I have been scammed.

I am not happy with this at all.

The system reliability is so bad I have to physically reboot panel every month to avoid false alarms and panel lockouts.
There is nothing Vivint is willing to do about it.
Customer support is pretty much non-existent. If you are lucky enough to actually speak to someone after 40 minutes on wait they’ll ask you to get a screwdriver, open a panel and disconnect battery.
This is extremely helpful advise especially when you are trying to troubleshoot a false alarm while on vacation 10 hours flight from your home.

DO NOT SELECT THIS COMPANY – I have been a Vivint customer since 2.2017. In today’s environment security has become even more important. I wanted to upgrade my system to include exterior cameras. They offer no discounts or options only full price, which was in excess of $1200.00. They provide sales incentives for new customers to get their business. It will cost an estimate of $1500 to end my contract and select a security provider that can offer what we need to secure our home. Be very careful about their sales pitch and what they will actually work with you to provide.
In addition, I had to fight with them to resend a security system they sold to my mom with Dementia. I was so hurt they took advantage of her. She was paying for Honeywell and Vivint until a member of management was able to address the issue.

    1. If you sign a contract with Vivint, the only way to get out of it is either to pay the entire contract fees up front (how ever many months you sign up for in the contract all at the same time) or simply wait it out.
    2. If you need a technician to come fix any equipment, you have to pay a $49 trip fee unless it is an actual problem with the equipment, you are within 120 days of installation, or the customer service representative decides to lower or waive the trip fee for you. Let it be noted: The representative is not supposed to lower or waive the trip fee except for certain circumstances and definitely not too often.
    3. You will be expected to go through all of the troubleshooting every time you call in. This way, the customer service representative can know that the both of you have done all you can to either fix the problem or get to the root of the issue (i.e. to know if it is a wifi issue, a product issue that needs replacement, or if a technician needs to come out.) If you have done all the troubleshooting you can, you are more likely to find out what needs to be done and come to the right conclusion rather than guesswork.
    4. The customer solutions representative is not supposed to send out a technician unless it is absolutely necessary, and though you may be asked to pay $49 for the trip fee, it costs the company more to send them out: $200 per trip.
    5. It is important to have good wifi with this product, especially if you have cameras and/or the doorbell. (You can check your wife’s upload and download speed on speedtest.net. for free)
    6. If you have older equipment, or equipment from another company your customer solutions representative may not have the information necessary to help fix the product and it will be suggested you replace it with updated Vivint products.

Buyer beware. Vivint is a pressure sales team and from my experience they rarely care about the equipment they sell, have poor customer service (I have even experienced agent hang ups) and ever poorer warranty service. I am considering cancelling service even if I have to pay a cancellation fee and eat the cost of the junk equipment.et all.

The worst ever. When you get out of the contract they do not want to lower their monitoring fees unless you call. Then they offer a lower cost on month to month. Still $50 a month.
When you cancel your service, even tho you pay for your system, it becomes useless and no longer able to use the app. They will not give you the unlock code to use it else where or to view the cameras. So it’s basically useless.
