Pros

Vivint SmartHome Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a ‘home automation’ solution. Their mobile app allows you to control your home security system remotely. They also have a suite of additional home automation products and features that allow you to control your thermostat temperature to promote energy efficiency, lock and unlock doors, live stream video of your doorbell ringing and the surrounding area, etc. Their home automation is compatible with common smart home products, such as Amazon Echo, Google home, Amazon Alexa, and many more.

Month-to-Month Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

High Equipment + Monthly Monitoring Costs

Monitoring plans for Vivint’s security systems start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you’ll notice between Vivint and Protect is 1) Upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn’t have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint’s 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

  Vivint Protect America Frontpoint
Equipment Upfront $500 - $1800 $0 $69 - $833
Basic Alarm Monitoring $29.99 $19.99 - $41.99 $34.99
Video Monitoring $49.99 $24.99 - $49.99 $49.99
Contract 5-year 3-year 3-year
Installation Professional; $50 - $200 DIY DIY
Customer Rating 1/10 8/10 7/10

60-Month Contract

Vivint provides the installation and equipment free of charge, but with one major caveat. You’re basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren’t too forgiving. Customers are expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers, the majority of them noting poor customer service. Be sure to check out the Vivint smart home reviews and home security reviews below to see what customers have to say and to decide if Vivint is the right home security provider for you. A common complaint customers have is customer service. Former and current Vivint customers have complained of deceptive sales tactics, poor customer service, poor billing practices, long contract, and slow technician response times. Unlike other review sites, BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com does not allow companies to pay to remove reviews. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge installation fees and has solid security equipment and home automation systems. Vivint also has a smartphone mobile app that allows you to control your home security system from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint’s home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don’t tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

How Do I Cancel Vivint?

To cancel your monitoring contract with Vivint, you will need to send in a written request that includes your name, address, and account number. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint’s Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don’t want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

    Worst service ever.
I had a burglary alarm and Vivint responded after more than 2 hours and their customer service rep got the nerve to tell me you are locked with us for 5 years contract so you have to accept the crappy service.
Don’t do my mistake and be fooled by this company
Vivint monitoring & customer service = total garbage
    Don’t waste your money

The installation was excellent and then the service went down hill from there. The worst part about using Vivint is if you decide to buy any of the equipment. After 3 years of up and down service I called Vivint when my contract expired and asked them if they would consider reducing my monthly fee. The answer was “NO.” I decided to make a change. I then found out that all the equipment I Paid for was configured by Vivint to be proprietary and could only be used with Vivint. DO NOT BUY ANY EQUIPMENT FROM VIVINT!

Purchased your system in July 2017. Have had nothing but problems since day 1. Have had technicians, spend countless hours swapping doorbells twice and panels twice. Various problems still persist and I find myself calling customer service. Each time I called I am told that my software needs updating or asked me to perform a hard reset of system. When that doesn’t work I had an appointment for a tech to come out to my home on June 20th between 10-12. He was a no-show but when I called customer service to what the problem was, I was told that he came by my house at 10:15 am, rang the doorbell (which was not working and he came to repair), was told he knocked on the door that I was sitting no more than 15 feet from (needless to say he did not knock). I asked if he called my phone and was told he did. That seems strange because my phone did not ring and in checking with history of my calls, no call was registered. I asked the rep if he had my correct number and was told he did. I now have to wait another day to have a tech come out and service my system. In the meantime, I am without alarm service and I am left worried about the safety of my family. This is disgraceful, it should not happen. I will never recommend your system to anyone that I care about. I have answered your surveys in the past and never get a response from you. Evidently customers complaints and concerns are not worthy enough for you to respond to. I have asked to be allowed to cancel my contract with you for lack of service and was told that I had to stay on the contract until it ends in 2022 no matter how bad the service is or pay to get out of the contract.

We moved and Vivint was more than happy to move the system to our new home. This was was perfectly okay with us at the time. BUT they did not tell us when my husband signed the lengthy re-install service contract, that he was also signing up for a new 5 year service contract! If they had just told us we could have told them we were not going to need it 5 years. When we moved a year later they have refused to cancel our service even though we were living with my parents then. They are perusing us like we are criminals and ruining our credit to get the money. We have finally settle with them at half the price of the 5 year contract. Paying for a service that we do not need, can not use, and did not realize we signed up for! Stay away from this deceptive company!

Buyers BEWARE. If a Vivint salesman tells you they want to “Sponsor” your home its complete crap. They are not sponsoring your home, they will show you resonable numbers and still tie you into a 5 yr contract with a little higher of a rate than before. The word sponsor will be thrown around a lot making you think you are getting the deal of a lifetime. I was young and dumb and bought into and wish I could get out. Vivint is built on BS sales teams

We had a sales rep come to the house and walk us through the process. They installed the equipment that night. Within 2 months the camera feeds would go offline randomly. We were told that the system had to be updated manually once a month. We did that for a while, after about a year, the cameras stopped working. I had to argue with a customer service rep over the phone to have someone come out and replace the camera, then they tried to make me pay for the camera and the visit, which I refused and they eventually absorbed. Within a week the system went down again, had someone come out, and within another week went down again. It’s now been 3 years, and 2 of them we have been without security cameras. The issues were happening too often and took too much of my time to deal with. Vivint refuses to release us from the contract without paying the remaining 2 years. I highly advise every person to have security, just don’t get it here, and don’t sign a contract, ever.

The system alarm system has the ease being disabled without the Vivint monitoring station from knowing. This hack is done by frequency monitoring and blocking the alarm signals from reaching monito. This reason is enough not to purchase the service. With the service already lacking csutmer service, you are using protective coverage and more. Try another higher rates company. You can only lose less stuff.

The sales person knocked my door and started to sell the products. He never mentioned there was a 5 years contact. It was a very deceptive sale. I tried to call them and cancel it almost a couple of years after installation. I really thought they would charge a couple hundred of dollars and require return of products.(Plus there were not many products they gave me). I was told I have to pay the full remaining contract balance. Whoever saw this post, make a wise decision and choose a good company for your service.

I Paid for my system about $2000 and 2 years later, I got a letter stating that my bill is going to be 19.99 a month, so I can continue using the phone app.
I never agree to any monitoring not to any technical assistance.

Complete rip off! Had a sales agent (Matthew P) who knocked on my door & informed me that my home already has pre-installed Vivint equipment & if I continue with their service, I will not be charged installation fees. I told Matt that I am going to be purchasing a home in the next few months so anything related to pulling my credit I am not interested in. He assured me that a soft pull would be taken. What a liar he is. I got not 1 but 2 hard pulls! Matt then told me that I would have 30 days to try out the service & if I don’t like it to contact Vivint & that Vivint would even send me a $200 gift card for giving them a try. After 2 weeks of trying out the service, I called to cancel. And only reason I wanted to cancel was because I found out I am being financed for the equipment that I was told was already pre-installed! It hit my credit report & dropped my score -58 points!! So I called to cancel only to be told that I actually only had 3 days from the day of installation to cancel and being that I am outside this window, I cannot cancel my service until I pay off my equipment. The blasphemy of these people!

Sales rep sold to my husband without me knowing. I came home and had to tell them to stop installing, because we couldn’t afford it in our budget. The sales rep later told my husband through text that we make enough money to be able to afford it and I had other reasons not to go with them -calling me a liar.

The list:camera is 70% of the time “unavailable” in real time; a 20 minute delay on currrent time and stored clips; phone nor camera app works on a regular basis; cannot rewind or playback, though we are supposed to have that ability; notifications of activity and camera do not match up, ie alarm about to go off but no camera clip within 20 minutes of that time; sporaic notifications when door opened or house locked/unlocked. This is a really secure feeling when there is such a delay and the thief has left the property and there is not documentation they were even there.

We have had an alarm for 5 years. The alarm NEVER works properly. We have called to get it fixed and they always have us running around trying to fix it all for them even though we are paying a high monthly premium. When asked if a service technician could come out, they offered to send us pamphlets so we could fix the problem ourselves. When asked again to send someone out, we were told we would be charged $50 for someone to come out to fix a product we are paying for that has never worked properly. We will be canceling service immediately and moving on with a company who has good customer service.
