Vivint Smart Home offers home security, security cameras, and home automation devices for residential homes. Right now, the company has no activation fee. However, if you opt to finance your equipment, you're locked into a 5-year contract with high monthly fees.

Because Vivint has received an abundance of negative customer reviews, we recommend you compare Vivint to the best home security companies in the industry.

Pros

Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a 'home automation' solution. Customers can use either Vivint's SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint's monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint's app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint's home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat. For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue - LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint's 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you'll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn't have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint's 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn't display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website. Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing. In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you'll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps. In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don't fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You're basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren't too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation - which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of. Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews. Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company's overall score. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront. The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint's home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don't tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Vivint Home Security and Smart Home Packages

Vivint has various home security solutions (24/7 professional monitoring) with a variety of equipment available. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint's Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don't want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

Terrible customer service. They only tell you to fix it yourself - they send a video link or written instructions to your e-mail and they WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT send a real person to your home to actually fix the problem. I have been without a doorbell for months. I get fed up and let them know and then call my son to spend an hour fixing the problem and then - two weeks later no doorbell again - amazing that their online support - a bunch of kids who know computers - don't care at all about whether your stuff get's fixed. Absolutely, DO NOT buy this product!

I’ve had Vivint for almost 5 years. Their customer service has been great when I’ve needed answers or needed help. I’ve had to use the warranty on our first display unit and they came out and fixed it in minutes. Prices seem fairly reasonable considering I’ve got a full monitoring system of 2 cameras and several glass break sensors as well as sensors on all doors that lead outside.

Prior to selling our house I spoke to Vivint and asked them that if I pay off all the equipment and leave it for the new owner and cancel my service would I be charged anything extra. They stated that if I pay it all off I would not be charged for not giving 30 days notice. I paid off the equipment and the new owner took it and started their own account. After paying it off Vivint required me to email them a cancelation request and proof of paying off the equipment. After doing this they still charged me a month of service. After 5-6 phone calls with the same exact speech from their reps every time, “your refund has been processed and you should have it in 72hrs” I still have not received my refund and it has been 6 weeks! I don’t even care about the money, it’s about how many other people are they taking advantage of if they do not check their charges and fight for what is right! I won’t even get into all the issues I had with their crappy equipment, customer service, and especially their installation when they drilled 4 holes threw my roof that I had to repair!

My whole expereince with Vivint has been a nightmare. At the end of my contract I was automatically renewed without consent. When I moved into my new home I was informed by a Vivint rep that if I updated my equipment I would no longer be in a contract but would be on a month to month basis. I did this so I could get out of the contract. I recently changed providers and paid off my equipment, which was at a higher amount than what Vivint had originally quoted. I paid it off so I could get out of Vivint. I have since been told that I am still in a contract for 60 months and the only way to cancel is to pay off the contract. I told Vivint no and am taking this matter to the Oregon Attorney General. I noticed that Vivint has had 4,430 complaints over the last 3 years, an F rating with the BBB and 5 states have filed lawsuits over deceptive advertising and other issues. One lawsuit even mentioned that people were told that if they upgraded they would be on a month to month. Vivint is a scam and I don't know why Vivint is still in business. Consumers be ware, DO NOT SIGN UP WITH VIVINT. YOU WILL BE LOCKED IN FOREVER>

Sold home and buyer said they will take over contract with 15 months left on agreement. New owners called to take over agreement that I was told was possible, but were told system is outdated and requires new agreement. I called Vivinit to find out why I’m stuck with agreement for. “Outdated Equipment “ and was told it’s not outdated and I’ll have to pay the remainder of contract or 15 more months. We aren’t buying a new home and can’t use the equipment, but they won’t release me or allow new owner to take over remainder of contract. Don’t believe when they say the agreement I’d transferable to new owners. They don’t care about anything but the monthly billing for all remaining months of agreement.

I had Vivint for 7 years and moved about half way through my first contract so they installed new equipment in my new house. But then I had a camera and a door lock that wasn’t working. I called and emailed and got no response from the company. I tried for about a month and still nothing. When I called to cancel my contract they told me I had to wait to the end of it otherwise pay the balance. I said there should be a discount because my equipment wasn’t working. Oh you should have contacted us they told me!!!! I did and got nowhere that why I’m canceling. I waited another month before I could cancel. Little did they neglect to tell me on the first call was if I had cancelled then(which I tried and the lady said i couldn’t) I might have saved myself a payment. But they took my last payment a month later after I had cancelled. This company is not about customer service. They want to lock you into a contract and leave with your monthly payments so you get nothing in return. I wouldn’t recommend this company to my worst enemy

If you plan on using this for only a specified amount of time, I would highly suggest using another company. I installed these cameras to look after my mother in her home and after she passed they made it virtually impossible for me to cancel, even asking me to send a death certificate to prove that she passed in order to process a refund. It was completely outrageous and to top it off, the cameras are not able to be used outside of their service, rendering them completely useless. I would not recommend at all, and was charged for over 5 months after canceling. I had to call and fax over 12 times just to get a cancelation 6 months after my initial cancelation forms. Would give negative stars if I could.

I am so frustrated with this product! The cameras and doorbell are offline more often then they are online. Several times we've found someone thinking they were ringing our doorbell but given it was offline there was no chime. Of course the one time someone swiped something from our porch the camera was offline. Vivint customer service was actually good about coming out (five times) to take a look at the system and problem solve. Boosters were added, cameras were hardwired, we upgraded our modem and router...same results. All the while we were paying $50 a month to have the service monitored. They never offered to discount the fee. What REALLY stinks is that the equipment is not interchangeable with other home monitoring services. I would STRONGLY discourage anyone from going with VIVINT.

I called Vivint to find out how to adjust the schedule/programming/temp controls. They told me that unless I purchased a FULL alarm package for the home then they WOULD NOT allow me access to the panel to control the system!!!!! They have both systems so messed up that I just got an alarm email for our garage in the city and a phone call for the alarm being at the garage at the lake. Nobody can tell me which alarm it really is because They don't even have the verbal passcodes for these two systems wrong. We have spent countless hours on the phone, over email and with technicians in our home over months trying to rectify Vivint's mix up with no success. I really felt pressured to buy this system. I was told someone would come out to evaluate my security needs but he turned out to be the installer. After spending quite a while on the phone I let them install a basic system and paid upfront. It's been a year and monitoring has gone up $5/month to $45. It's too much for my needs and now I own a panel that I can't monitor remotely. Should have looked into it more before I bought this but at least I'm not stuck with it for 5 years.

From day 1- a pushy salesperson who asked personal questions about if I lived in my home alone to where I worked. A Tech then shows up to do the installation and is still walking around my home at 11pm at night unscrewing my door knobs. He put an unnecessary hole in my new home wall, walked around aimlessly, then couldn't finish the installation, promised to come back the next day and then couldn't, came back eventually and wanted to put more holes in my wall (that was never the understanding of what was going to happen) I literally was so worked up about all the walking up and down the stairs and moving around aimlessly. Customer service is a complete joke and worthless on all points. I wish to God I had never allowed this company in my home. This is been a nightmare that I would rather do without living.

First of all the installation was a nightmare. The installer didn’t turn the power off and shocked himself. He also put holes in the walls. He didn’t put the cover plate on level and when I said something he said it doesn’t need to be level, uhm yes it does. He also managed to turn the furnace off creating all kinds of confusion as to why the heat wasn’t working. The salesman told us he would give us the first three months free because of the hassle. We never got those 3 months free, Vivent customer service said they can’t honor those sorts of promises. The system itself is spotty, the garage door has never worked. The video works sometimes but the door chime rarely works. Customer service is useless. We pulled the thermostat plate off to replace it and low and behold there is a huge hole in the wall where the installer broke the drywall. The hole is the size of a lemon. The vivent thermostat plate just covered it. What a joke! Let the patching begin. The whole experience has not been good. I would never recommend this service to anyone. It’s total crap and the customer service is worse. Go with someone else. Vivent is a nightmare and total waste of money!!

Vivínt is definitely the worst company I have ever been a customer of. They required a contract of 3.5 years that was impossible to get out of, depite the fact that the system never worked correctly and I had so many false alarms that the police were going to charge me to come to my house. Not to mention I was woken up in the middle of the night innumerable times by the alarm going off for no reason (which gave me incredible anxiety and woke my sleeping infant in more than one occasion). The terrible system gave me more anxiety and made my life more difficult, despite the fact that the goal was to do the opposite. I called on several occasions wanting to cancel, but was always told I had to pay out my contract. So I did. But once my contract was up they continued my charging me as if my contract had been renewed. I called to cancel again. Was told I had to send in a written request. So I did. I was still charged, so I began disputing their claims on my credit card, so my card would no longer accept their charges. And now I am receiving bills in the mail. This company is nothing but a leech offering an inadequate system but refusing to allow you to stop using it/stop paying them money. I have huge regrets about the day I choose to go with this company. I have consistently begged their customer service for a refund as the system never worked, yet all I keep getting is more charges for a system I haven’t used in years and am no longer contracted to. Very dissatisfied with Vivint Security Systems! They increase their monthly charges (I pay $66.00/month- that's almost $800/year). The thermostats are horrible- have had a defective one installed as well. Once the thermostat malfunctioned- instead of AC the heat pump turned on- I could not correct it. Had to leave work & have my AC tech try to figure it out! The security panel system needs to be updated & it is always signaling that there are issues (battery problems, updates needed, etc.). Again, on the phone to try to solve the issues. Oh, and they charge a $49 service fee to come out & change your batteries! The cameras have never worked right, even though they have come to replace them. Then they wanted to charge me $150 to replace the camera that did not work. I spend so much time with tech support trying to "reset the panel" etc..... Not to mention waiting 10 -15 minutes being put on hold! Then, I finally decided to end my contract, they said that I was automatically renewed for 2 more years. They had me over a barrel, because I needed to schedule an AC company to change out the vivint thermostat, but could not get them over until after my contract ended. I live in Florida & it is 95 degrees here right now- I would not have been able to use my AC without a thermostat.

After the equipment is paid off, you can cancel vivint at any time. This is all questionable as they do not follow through with customer service request. I have nothing good to say about Vivant, our original install was suppose to be on a Thursday, they pushed it back to Friday, ok, no big deal for 1 day out, 2 people came out to do the install, one was our sales rep and the other I guess was the manager or another sales rep, I don't even know, our sales rep said they don't hire 3rd company installers anymore and that we (the sales rep) has to install the equipment.... which would be fine IF they knew what they were doing, they were at my house from 10 in the morning until 9:30 at night, my husband had to kick them out... my system is still not installed and they have been giving us a run around on when someone can come out to finish it.... also, they have damaged my home, so now we need to hire a contractor to give us an estimate on the damage so we can get reimbursed from Vivant.... VERY disappointed and would never recommend Vivant to anyone.

Shameful the sales man was very dishonest told me I was getting a free upgrade then took my credit card to put on hold as company policy, I asked him why he needed it and if I will be charged I asked him about five times and he said no in front of my wife and daughter now they are taking out money every month saying the equipment costs $2,000.00. This is so wrong and unethical. I will be writing the Attorney General and Equifax, transunion and Experian.

The info listed on this page is not entirely true regarding Vivint’s contract term and cancellation policy, the term can range from 42-60 months (I chose the latter). You can also cancel the monitoring at any time but you still have to pay off any equipment you purchase from them, so essentially if you want all the smart home stuff it will cost you more to cancel compared to if you just do a basic security system. Their monitoring fee can also be as low as $29.99 if you just do a security system with no home automation (I know this because I almost chose that package before I opted for the additional cameras and smart home features) I really love the system and have referred many friends who also enjoy it. It’s very user friendly and much easier to use than my two previous alarm companies that I’ve had and costs about the same money each month and I get extra features with my Vivint system. All in all, I’d give it a 10 because it does everything I need it to do, the gentleman that knocked on my door to sell it to me was more than respectful, it’s actually very affordable, and the customer service is hands down better than anything I’ve ever dealt with at ADT and Brinks.

Locks have not been working, after talking to someone for nearly an hour they had to send me a new lock but! I have to put it in. Don’t know how. Now they want to charge me for the older lock that is still in my door. Refuse to send a service person. Funny how when they put it in they had to get someone from Regina and they were here in 30 minutes. Now they have me and refuse to help me.
