Vivint Smart Home offers home security, security cameras, and home automation devices for residential homes. Right now, the company has no activation fee. However, if you opt to finance your equipment, you're locked into a 5-year contract with high monthly fees.

Because Vivint has received an abundance of negative customer reviews, we recommend you compare Vivint to the best home security companies in the industry.

Pros

Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a 'home automation' solution. Customers can use either Vivint's SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint's monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint's app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint's home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat. For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue - LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint's 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you'll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn't have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint's 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn't display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website. Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing. In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you'll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps. In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don't fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You're basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren't too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation - which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of. Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews. Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company's overall score. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront. The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint's home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don't tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

salesman said they were rated number 1, wrong! Said try it and if unhappy everything would be put back perfect,.wrong! Installer left bad mess, then when returned to remove it, he left unfilled holes in walls, doors, doorbell not replaced correct, and door latch wasn't even screwed in. They were not professional at all.

I do not suggest anyone use these people! I have not had anything but problems. The technician came out to fix one problem on hooking cameras to wifi but he created another problem by some how making my system not pick up door sensors. So now we have to have another technician come out. We have had 3 technicians and we have only been with Vivint for a month and half! Do NOT use Vivint!!!! Not worth the expensive money you pay a month for it to not secure your house.

I'm a 68 year old woman living on a small S.S check and have been trapped by Vivint's deceptive sales tactics into a 5 year contract (it won't expire until 2022)! I would never knowingly sign such a contract! I've got Vivint because I was living by myself and suffering from seizures. but recently my circumstances changed when my daughter moved in with me and therefore I have no need for their service any longer. I've called Vivint and was told that I have to pay for the remaining balance if I want to cancel the service, which is over $50.00/month for the remaining 36 months or otherwise they will report me to the Credit Bureaus and forward my so called "debt" to a collection agency. Beware, this is not something their sale representatives will formally disclose to you. Actually, you'd be better off not giving your business to this company

I sold my home 5/7/2109 and cancelled everything then. I had to paid off that predatory equipment loan before I could cancel my services which is complete horse sh!t, but I did it anyway. I sent them the confirmation number and they lost it. I sent in the cancellation request as they requested and they lost it. Oh one other thing...it takes 30 DAYS for them to cancel your account!! WHY?!?!? So that they can collect ONE MORE PAYMENT FROM YOU! DO NOT go with Vivint Smarthome. I won't ever again.

Have had constant problems with the connection to the thermostat. Numerous calls to customer service resulting in over an hour long with no repair in the end. Their solution...to mail me a new thermostat which takes 7-10 days while in the mean time it's 100+ degrees. This thermostat cannot be controlled any other way besides through the unworking app! Then when I receive the new thermostat I have to call back to have them walk me through the setup again which could be another hour phone call and may not even work in the end. Ridiculous design with malfunctioning equipment. Better solution would be to have someone out right away to make repair. Asked to speak to a supervisor to explain my ongoing problems, but can't. Speaking to someone in another country and so out of touch. Just bad all around. :(

When contemplating the home security system, I had some anxiety about being able to manage the system. The sales representative assured me that the installers/techs would answer any questions I had. During the installation, I asked if they had worked with people who weren’t very “techno-savvy”, to which the reply was, “Oh yes!”, and I was assured that they would answer any questions that I had when they were done with the installation and before they left. When they first arrived at my house, they paused and stared into my car windows before coming in, with no later explanation. I might have been interested in the app for the car, which was what I thought might have been their reason for staring at it. The two techs seemed to be in a rush the whole time they were at my house, to the point that I almost asked them if I was making them nervous somehow, or if they were in a hurry to get done to go somewhere else. The appointment was scheduled for (after I got home from work) at 9PM, which is still daylight in Alaska in the summer. The time was not my idea, as I would have preferred to wait until Wednesday, but the sales rep was pushing to have it done ASAP so that I could get the installation fee waived. However, if it was not a good time for the installers, it would have been better to cancel and/or reschedule, rather than rushing through the job and providing very poor service. One of my doors had been left unlocked all night. I don’t even know if the system was on or not when they left. The boxes from the various parts were just left on the floor. I picked up several pieces of packaging waste after they left. The first guy just left when he was done with his part. Before he left, I asked him how to lock the front door, and he replied, “Any way you want.”, and he walked off. Before he left, the other tech asked him about the Vivant app not working on my Android. He shrugged and walked off. The remaining tech told me that he didn’t know anything about Android phones, as he only uses i-phones. Android phones have a huge segment of the market, and I was not told prior to the sale that an Android phone would not be compatible. Prior to this, he showed me one time the basic operation of the panel. With the confusion of the app, I forgot what he had told me. The way learning works is to demonstrate and allow practice, rather than telling the person and then introducing a stressful event such as an app that appears critical but inoperable. Looking at the overwhelming panel, I asked if there was an information booklet for it, and was told “no”. I stated in a question tone, “I guess I could go to the website”, while pointing to the panel. He said that I could. Clearly, I didn’t understand. I was astounded, as I thought I was supposed to understand how it worked before they left. The tech then held up a 2-inch square item and said something about it being for flood, and I think he said it goes under the water heater. Apparently, he missed my confused look, and he just set it on the floor. He sent me a text, which was for a survey that I was supposed to complete on his iPad, which he did not present to me before he scurried out, as his coworker had already left a few minutes ago. I texted the sales rep shortly after the second guy left with a message of “That was disappointing. I don’t know how it works, but they were in a hurry to go.” The sales rep offered to stop by Monday, but I had to work today (Sunday), so that didn’t help much. I understand about Sunday being his day off, so I didn’t push the issue. Your brochure was impressive, and there were some other services in which I might have been interested, but now I have no idea how to operate this system and am afraid to open my door, which is the opposite of what a security system is supposed to provide. I was left hanging, or rather stuck, in my house, afraid to open the door for fear of inadvertently wasting the time of emergency responders, as well as being embarrassed in front of the neighbors. Needing to work off the stress, I finished a few projects, read a book, and was eventually able to fall asleep. When I got up this morning, I tried calling customer service. The cancellation office was closed, so I tried the tech line. The first call went to the country of Columbia. The second call went to Jamaica. I tried again later, after a two-hour workout to burn off some stress, and the call dropped. The fourth call ended up with a lengthy hold, after which I decided to try the website, which was also a fail, until I tried the chat line. Finally, I was able to turn the system off. To feel more secure, I also unplugged it and took out the battery. Initially, I had the impression that there was a camera system. One little camera for the front door is woefully inadequate for a house with five doors, and provides NO security for my fuel tank. The little door tabs look cheap and ugly. There should be some type of camera for the back of the house as well. I am going to go with the security camera system that I had purchased previously. Your system sounded good, but the techs failed miserably in their rush to get out of my house, for whatever reason. It could have been my pacing cats, who were apparently trying to tell me this was a bad idea. If you are going to be a national company and import outsiders into an area to do work, you need to train them about the region. For example, your sign was randomly place in my yard, where in the winter time it will be buried in snow. The techs could have asked the woman of the house (me) where to put the sign. The installers seemed to have an attitude of “Get in, get out, and get paid”. Well now you can send someone to get in, get your stuff, and close my account. There is nothing that will convince me to ever do business with your company again. When I express a concern and get a response of “Oh well.”, then I am done! After I didn't get a response to my email cancellation, I tried the chat to follow up. I was told that I needed to call. It took 15 minutes to get the appointment scheduled. The earliest time they could do it was nine days; yet they were in a big hurry to get the installation done. I'm paying someone else to take out the system, and the Vivint techs can meet me at the door, because I don't want them inside my house again.

let's talk about customer service (or lack thereof)... I opened a chat with a Vivint rep named BayLee this morning — first, to let Vivint know that my (brand new) outdoor camera is filled with water and we have no view of our driveway or street because the camera is broken... and second, to let Vivint know that the security sensor on my son's bedroom window has been open for three days and the alarm has not alerted me at all. I am currently looking at my alarm panel and it is telling me that the sensor is at 93% battery and that the window is closed... yet, I'm looking at a WIDE OPEN window. The response from BayLee was, "oh okay, let's fix that." No apology for leaving my home and MY CHILD'S BEDROOM WINDOW un-alarmed when I'm paying $85 a month for a security system. No empathy for the concerned mother on the other end of the chat whose child could've been kidnapped last night due to the faulty equipment Vivint provided. The explanation she gave me? I am responsible to contact Vivint once per month to do monthly maintenance/testing on every piece of equipment that I have in my home to ensure that it's working properly... that's right! They add a secret clause in your contract that states that you THE CUSTOMER must call them once per month for eternity to test all of your equipment. Mind you, the sensor broke three days ago — so, even if I had called at the beginning of the month for my "monthly testing," I wouldn't have known until August that the sensor had broken (if we're going by their monthly testing window). On top of that, after basically severing that chat session because I was tired of BayLee and her unprofessional attitude, I wasted 20 minutes on the phone with SherryLynn — Who told me that they would not have a problem sending a technician out to my house to fix the camera (which is still under warranty) and look at the busted sensor... but only if I pay a $49 fee for the technician visit. Vivint won't be seeing another dime of my money or my monthly payments. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY! GO WITH A MORE REPUTABLE SECURITY SYSTEM THAT ISN'T RIDICULOUSLY FLAWED!

Terrible company. Equipment never worked and was unreliable. When tried to cancel after my contract was up they refused to process the cancellation without numerous phone calls and hoops to jump through. Constantly trying to upsell us on different deals and promotions. None of which were remotely appealing. The final phone call took over thirty minutes of arguing with them to simply allow me to cancel. I still then needed to send them a written explanation on why I wanted to cancel.

I purchased equipment up front from Vivint. It worked reasonably well for several months. Then connection problems started as well as false alarms and poor response to functions. I contacted customer service for help. They sent a technician to evaluate the problem who told me the system was not compatible with my radiant barrier insulation. When I contacted customer service about returning the equipment and canceling the service, they mysteriously could find no record or the technician they sent to the home that noted a radiant barrier problem. The system continued to work poorly and Vivint repeatedly sent someone to fix the problem. They could never make the system work well. They refused to take the equipment back and charged me for nearly a year of service they could not provide due to the system not functioning. I finally cancelled all together and have all of the useless equipment to this day. I would never recommend Vivint to anyone

We got Vivint in 2014 because they offered a good security system with great programmable thermostats, etc that you can monitor over your phone. At the time, it was GREAT. Well a lot changes in 60 months, their standard contract duration. We sold our house, which we put a 4 month hold on our account. When they came out to do our install, because of our new updated HVAC system, we could not use the thermostats. The installer just put in the alarm system, went over our new pricing structure, that was the end. Our renewal date was July 1, 2019, plainly stated in our documents. WELLLL, because of the new pricing, it locked us in for another 60 months, WHICH WAS NOT EXPLAINED NOR MENTIONED!!!! BEWARE!!!

After knocking on my 89 year old mother's door, the vivint rep convinced her that a security system was what she needed to help her keep track of her husband who suffers from dementia. He also said he would extend the usual 3 day trial period to 30 days to make sure she was happy with the system. My Mom's husband was placed in an assisted living facility 2 weeks later and when she tried to get the Rep and the company to honor their 30 day trial period and remove the system, she was told someone would call her back. THEY NEVER DID. I would not trust anyone from this company. She is now stuck with a 60 month contract that she most likely will have to buy herself out of. In my opinion....ELDER ABUSE!

If you need home security system DO NOT use Vivint for your service they are a joke. I was misinformed about my service cancelation when I spoke with agent Kelly M over chat through my vivint app. I was told to send an email and the sevice would be canceled within 30 days. I did as I was instructed and sent the email and call to follw up where I was them and was informed I needed to pay a $1000 to cancel by customer service. I ask for customer loyalty and William told me I owe over $1500 to cancel cause I had to buy out this ridiculous 5 year contract at over 60 a month, which I had only paid 3 years of, at the amount of over $2100. I feel this should be canceled in 30 days as I was told would happen with the first agent I spoke with through my app chat. The supervisor over customer loyalty said I could pay $800 and be good. As a company they are way more expensive than any other monitoring service that can do exactly what they have done. I will never recommend or use vivint again for home monitoring. I have paid faithfully every month for 3 years and I got a wall monitor and a doorbell camera and a few window sensors, they used most of the old sensors that were in my home at install. I have paid over 60 a month for 3 years (over $2100) and somehow figure I still owe $1500 more to buy out you my contract. This company is ripping people off with that service and cost. I will also be making a formal complaint to the BBB about this. I have the messages the agent sent me saying I needed to send and email and call to confirm and my account would be canceled with in 30 days, not one time mentioning me owing any amount or having to buy out any contract.

From Day #1 this system has had issues, from Camera's not working, Replacing my panel, removing doorbell camera, etc...etc... you name it. Complete Garbage. Service Calls (Which you pay for) often get cancelled just hours prior. Doesn't really matter though. They never fix problem. I am stuck for another 2.5 years with them. Will probably just pay off my contract early and move back to ADT

High Pressure salesman conned us into this in what now seems like a life contract. AND WE HATE THE SYSTEM. The cameras are poorly placed. The playback is sproadic, at best. I wish I had never heard of this company.

Horrible company. When moving or trying to cancel the service they claim there is a contract that has been "signed" any time you call or get an additional sensor that renews for 2 years. Then if you want to cancel the service you have to pay your ENTIRE contract cost to get out. I have tried to cancel my contract twice. Both times the "end date" of my contract magically was 27 months in the future. Absolute scam. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Unfortunately after my husband and I bought our first house we had a vivint rep come to our door and we stupidly signed up. We had issues with our alarm going off in our garage for no reason at all hours of the night. We called and they sent a tech over to take a look at our issue. He said it was just a low battery and was going to charge us to replace a new battery! We ended up using one of our own batteries (size AA) so we wouldn’t get charged $10. Ridiculous! Especially since we were paying them $60 a month already. Now it’s been a few years and our contract is up. I will NEVER go with vivint again. The customer service, quality of product and fees are all ridiculously stupid. Now of course they’re coming door to door again and I immediately shut them down and tell them I’m not interested but they don’t care. I had 3 different reps come to my house all within the same day. Today the rep that came actually had the nerve to make fun of me as I’m standing there telling him to get off my property and my infant in my arms is spitting up on me. Real nice! The company itself, the fees, the contracts, the sales reps.... all a bunch of junk. I would recommend a piece of paper saying “please go away” over anything from vivint as a security system. That’s how much I really don’t like them.

Worst service ever. I had a burglary alarm and Vivint responded after more than 2 hours and their customer service rep got the nerve to tell me you are locked with us for 5 years contract so you have to accept the crappy service. Don’t do my mistake and be fooled by this company Vivint monitoring & customer service = total garbage Don’t waste your money

I sold my home and transfered the contract to the new owners per Vivint's instructions, the new owners were in agreement. Fast forward 3 months later, I am still being charged i have spoken to at least 7 different people and they all give me a story... the refund is in process... Thank you for your patience, This business is awful, the service wasn't great either, don't trust them.

The installation was excellent and then the service went down hill from there. The worst part about using Vivint is if you decide to buy any of the equipment. After 3 years of up and down service I called Vivint when my contract expired and asked them if they would consider reducing my monthly fee. The answer was "NO." I decided to make a change. I then found out that all the equipment I Paid for was configured by Vivint to be proprietary and could only be used with Vivint. DO NOT BUY ANY EQUIPMENT FROM VIVINT!

Purchased your system in July 2017. Have had nothing but problems since day 1. Have had technicians, spend countless hours swapping doorbells twice and panels twice. Various problems still persist and I find myself calling customer service. Each time I called I am told that my software needs updating or asked me to perform a hard reset of system. When that doesn't work I had an appointment for a tech to come out to my home on June 20th between 10-12. He was a no-show but when I called customer service to what the problem was, I was told that he came by my house at 10:15 am, rang the doorbell (which was not working and he came to repair), was told he knocked on the door that I was sitting no more than 15 feet from (needless to say he did not knock). I asked if he called my phone and was told he did. That seems strange because my phone did not ring and in checking with history of my calls, no call was registered. I asked the rep if he had my correct number and was told he did. I now have to wait another day to have a tech come out and service my system. In the meantime, I am without alarm service and I am left worried about the safety of my family. This is disgraceful, it should not happen. I will never recommend your system to anyone that I care about. I have answered your surveys in the past and never get a response from you. Evidently customers complaints and concerns are not worthy enough for you to respond to. I have asked to be allowed to cancel my contract with you for lack of service and was told that I had to stay on the contract until it ends in 2022 no matter how bad the service is or pay to get out of the contract.

We moved and Vivint was more than happy to move the system to our new home. This was was perfectly okay with us at the time. BUT they did not tell us when my husband signed the lengthy re-install service contract, that he was also signing up for a new 5 year service contract! If they had just told us we could have told them we were not going to need it 5 years. When we moved a year later they have refused to cancel our service even though we were living with my parents then. They are perusing us like we are criminals and ruining our credit to get the money. We have finally settle with them at half the price of the 5 year contract. Paying for a service that we do not need, can not use, and did not realize we signed up for! Stay away from this deceptive company!

Buyers BEWARE. If a Vivint salesman tells you they want to "Sponsor" your home its complete crap. They are not sponsoring your home, they will show you resonable numbers and still tie you into a 5 yr contract with a little higher of a rate than before. The word sponsor will be thrown around a lot making you think you are getting the deal of a lifetime. I was young and dumb and bought into and wish I could get out. Vivint is built on BS sales teams
