Vivint Smart Home offers home security, security cameras, and home automation devices for residential homes. Right now, the company has no activation fee. However, if you opt to finance your equipment, you're locked into a 5-year contract with high monthly fees.

Because Vivint has received an abundance of negative customer reviews, we recommend you compare Vivint to the best home security companies in the industry.

Pros

Vivint Smart Home Automation Features

One of the ways Vivint is trying to separate from the competition is by positioning themselves as more of a 'home automation' solution. Customers can use either Vivint's SkyControl Panel or Google Home as a hub to control and communicate with all their smart home devices. The great thing about the SkyControl Panel is that it uses two-way audio to communicate with Vivint's monitoring team, so customers have instant access to support.

To control smart devices remotely, homeowners can use the Vivint Smart Home app. Vivint's app is highly rated in the Apple app store (4.6/5) and Google Play (4.5/5). With the app, you can control and see the following:

  • Arm and disarm home security
  • Lock and unlock your front door
  • Check the status of your window and door locks
  • Open garage door
  • View live feed on doorbell camera
  • Use two-way audio with doorbell camera
  • View live feed on indoor and outdoor camera
  • Turn lights on, off, and dim
  • Adjust smart thermostat
  • View smoke detectors

Vivint's home automation system is compatible with common smart home hubs, such as Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. For environment controls, Vivint sells both the Element Thermostat and Nest Thermostat. For lighting, Vivint integrates with Philips Hue - LED bulbs that you can control the brightness levels of with your voice or mobile app.

Month-to-Month Contract Option

If you purchase all of your equipment upfront from Vivint, you can be on a month-to-month monitoring contract with them, meaning you can cancel at any time. Without purchasing equipment upfront, Vivint locks customers into a 5-year contract. This month-to-month contract is a great option for those who want to own their equipment immediately, which will cost anywhere from $500 to $1800, depending on what equipment you want to purchase.

Cons

Costly Equipment + High Monthly Monitoring

Vivint's 24/7 monitoring packages start at $39.99 per month and go up to $49.99/month for video monitoring. This is a bit higher than other leading industry providers, considering equipment needs to be purchased separately. Specifically, their lowest plan is priced considerably higher than other industry-leading providers and their respective lower plans.

The table below compares home security systems from Vivint, Protect America, and Frontpoint. The two big differences you'll notice between Vivint and Protect America is 1) upfront costs and 2) customer satisfaction. Protect America doesn't have any upfront fees, Frontpoint has low upfront fees, and Vivint has high upfront fees. Next, Protect America customers rate them an average of 8 out of 10, while Vivint customers rate the company an average of 1 out of 10. Another point worth mentioning is Vivint's 5-year contract vs a 3-year contract from the compared companies.

Undisclosed Pricing

Another point worth mentioning is that Vivint doesn't display their package or individual equipment pricing on their website. Instead, the company relies on door-to-door salesmen to advertise technology and pricing. In order to sign up with Vivint or get an estimate, you'll either need to talk to a salesman in person or speak to customer service reps. In our section below on negative Vivint security reviews, note that the door-to-door salesmen sometimes have high-pressure sales tactics, don't fully explain the contract, and make some homeowners feel like they have to make an instant decision.

5-Year Contract

Vivint provides equipment free of charge, with one major caveat. You're basically signing a 5-year (60-month) home security contract. And these contracts aren't too forgiving for those who want to cancel their home security or are moving. A customer is expected to pay the remaining balance of their contract in the event that they try to cancel early.

Vivint has professional installation service- there is no option for DIY installation - which some people prefer. The company charges $50-$200 for this professional installer.

Negative Vivint Reviews

There are many negative Vivint reviews from customers on our site and the majority of them touch on poor customer service and the long contract that ranges from difficult to impossible to get out of. Common themes among these customer service reviews include:

  • Deceptive sales tactics
  • Poor service
  • Poor billing practices
  • Slow technician response time

You may be wondering why there are so many negative reviews of the Vivint alarm on BestHomeSecurityCompanys.com, when other review sites rate them high and have positive reviews. Unlike other review sites, we do not allow companies to pay to remove reviews, nor do we filter out reviews just to boost or lower a company's overall score. We have received over 1,500 negative reviews here on this website regarding Vivint from real customers.

Our Recommendation

Vivint is a well-known home security company that does not charge for its devices upfront. The smartphone mobile app allows you to control your home security systems and smart home devices from wherever you are. However, with a 5-year contract and high monthly monitoring rates, Vivint's home security systems may be too expensive. Most importantly, we recommend choosing a company with better customer reviews. There are also more affordable home security companies that don't tie you down with long contracts and have a deeper history of high-level customer service.

Vivint Home Security and Smart Home Packages

Vivint has various home security solutions (24/7 professional monitoring) with a variety of equipment available. If you are in a 5-year contract with Vivint, you will have to pay the entire balance of your contract when you cancel. Make sure to cancel within the window the company gives you. Customers who have tried to cancel even a couple of hours outside of their cancellation window have been denied.

How Long is Vivint's Contract?

When you do not purchase equipment upfront, you will need to sign a 5-year contract with them. If you want to purchase all of your equipment upfront, you can be on a month-to-month contract. Don't want to pay for equipment upfront or be locked into a 5-year contract? Check out Protect America.

We had a sales rep come to the house and walk us through the process. They installed the equipment that night. Within 2 months the camera feeds would go offline randomly. We were told that the system had to be updated manually once a month. We did that for a while, after about a year, the cameras stopped working. I had to argue with a customer service rep over the phone to have someone come out and replace the camera, then they tried to make me pay for the camera and the visit, which I refused and they eventually absorbed. Within a week the system went down again, had someone come out, and within another week went down again. It’s now been 3 years, and 2 of them we have been without security cameras. The issues were happening too often and took too much of my time to deal with. Vivint refuses to release us from the contract without paying the remaining 2 years. I highly advise every person to have security, just don’t get it here, and don’t sign a contract, ever.

The system alarm system has the ease being disabled without the Vivint monitoring station from knowing. This hack is done by frequency monitoring and blocking the alarm signals from reaching monito. This reason is enough not to purchase the service. With the service already lacking csutmer service, you are using protective coverage and more. Try another higher rates company. You can only lose less stuff.

The sales person knocked my door and started to sell the products. He never mentioned there was a 5 years contact. It was a very deceptive sale. I tried to call them and cancel it almost a couple of years after installation. I really thought they would charge a couple hundred of dollars and require return of products.(Plus there were not many products they gave me). I was told I have to pay the full remaining contract balance. Whoever saw this post, make a wise decision and choose a good company for your service.

Complete rip off! Had a sales agent (Matthew P) who knocked on my door & informed me that my home already has pre-installed Vivint equipment & if I continue with their service, I will not be charged installation fees. I told Matt that I am going to be purchasing a home in the next few months so anything related to pulling my credit I am not interested in. He assured me that a soft pull would be taken. What a liar he is. I got not 1 but 2 hard pulls! Matt then told me that I would have 30 days to try out the service & if I don't like it to contact Vivint & that Vivint would even send me a $200 gift card for giving them a try. After 2 weeks of trying out the service, I called to cancel. And only reason I wanted to cancel was because I found out I am being financed for the equipment that I was told was already pre-installed! It hit my credit report & dropped my score -58 points!! So I called to cancel only to be told that I actually only had 3 days from the day of installation to cancel and being that I am outside this window, I cannot cancel my service until I pay off my equipment. The blasphemy of these people!

The list:camera is 70% of the time "unavailable" in real time; a 20 minute delay on currrent time and stored clips; phone nor camera app works on a regular basis; cannot rewind or playback, though we are supposed to have that ability; notifications of activity and camera do not match up, ie alarm about to go off but no camera clip within 20 minutes of that time; sporaic notifications when door opened or house locked/unlocked. This is a really secure feeling when there is such a delay and the thief has left the property and there is not documentation they were even there.

We have had an alarm for 5 years. The alarm NEVER works properly. We have called to get it fixed and they always have us running around trying to fix it all for them even though we are paying a high monthly premium. When asked if a service technician could come out, they offered to send us pamphlets so we could fix the problem ourselves. When asked again to send someone out, we were told we would be charged $50 for someone to come out to fix a product we are paying for that has never worked properly. We will be canceling service immediately and moving on with a company who has good customer service.

As a long time customer, approx. 8 years, I upgraded 6/8/19 to include a dorrbell camera. Why did I have to take out a loan from a 3rd party after years of automatic billing withdrawls from my checking account with never a problem? And the application for same kept repeating a request for my social security # number saying it did not match what was on file. Well, if you already had that info why did you keep asking for it? I especially dislike having to print out on he Internet for all the world to see my entire 9 digit SS # . And after several calls I kept getting people with terrible English speaking skills whose only answers was to go to your web page. I have no problem with the company, but this last experience was quite unsatisfactory.

Our issues come with the company itself, our local division was fine... As with most security system plans, you sign a contract initially. Your contract term automatically renews without any notification and then you are stuck for the next 2 or 3 years, depending on how your contract was written. If you want to cancel your system with Vivint, corporate policy forces you to pay 100% of the remainder of your term. We were quoted $1,600 to cancel with them! A cancellation fee is not a choice with them apparently. If you still feel you should use this company with a horrible corporate policy, I suppose you should put your contract date on your calendar. Beware!

I have been trapped in my contract for almost 4 years. I have not had the system installed in my new home for over a year because not only was there no urgency with customer service or responders when alarms were triggered, which was often because of the “glass break” sensors being triggered by my dogs playing on my hardwood floors. Several times I arrived to my home and entered it before support was there. Not worth the money.

Called them again today and they said they would only send a replacement sensor if I renew for another year even though i still have a year and half left on my original contract. Customer service is horrible and the sales reps lie about what you will get. I called within 3 days to cancel, no way I want to be involved for 5 years with them. Same person came to uninstall, didn't make sure anything was working and tried to leave. I had Vivnet. NEVER AGAIN. First is was down a lot. The camera worked when it felt like it and the replay was terrible because it did not pick up people walking right in front of the camera 50% of the time so there was no replay 50% of the time. The sensors in the house went off when the little 10 pound dog moved or when the clouds went over and changed the light in the house. The police came to check out an alarm when we were visiting friends and it cost me another $35.00 fine. So after that, we did not get to use the sensor alarms in the house which defeated the purpose of the alarm. I was charged for the equipment with a high monthly fee plus the monthly fee. When you needed to adjust a setting for what ever needed to be done, it was my job. They did not send anyone but they would walk me through what to do on the phone. I should of received a lower rate for doing their job but nope. Then we sold the house. I was forced to pay off the equipment. It is in the garage in a box as I own it. I will be happy to sell it. Then to get rid of the monthly billing it horrendous. I am still getting billed for a service not rendered because the new owner of the house did not want Vivnet. Yes I have made phone calls. Avoid this company. It is not worth the value and it is not worth the effort.

Purchased Vivant cameras, doorbell camera, Nest thermostat and security system for $2000+ three weeks ago. Installer had to stretch process over two days because he had to take care of emergency calls for other customers or didn't have the parts with him. He was polite, but unable to complete setup for the Nest thermostat and left us to troubleshoot. Whole system has been glitchy since it was installed with cameras repeatedly going off-line, base unit loosing wireless connection with the router (which is three feet away), thermostat triggering AC to come on too late and stay on too long. Thermostat failed today due to a loose wire (according to its error code) so called troubleshooting at Vivant. On phone over 1 hour with tech support who had me throwing breakers and trying to pull wires myself (I am not an electrician!). They would not agree to send out a technician on their 3 week old installation until I insisted and the best they could do is 48 hours from now. My own HVAC repairman will be out in 8 hours to remove the Nest and replace it with their original, working thermostat. Sorry I bought this system. Do NOT recommend it.

Devices are CONSTANTLY not working. Vivint will not replace, and it means spending hours on the phone with a technician "troubleshooting." If I were to do this everytime something went wrong, it would be a full time job. Effectively, it means I pay for a security system but have no security because 95% of the time it is unusable. Cameras stop communicating, motion sensors stop communicating, locks, the doorbell, etc... The cherry on top was that my 6lb cat would set off the motion sensors when we werent home as well, despite them being on the LOWEST "pet sensitivity." Useless system, but kind of cool when it works, rarely.

So just to make him look even MORE stupid & slimy than he already was, I got a phone & called AT&T on speakerphone, to order Fiber internet - which of course, we were both told promptly it was NOT available here.
