Pros

Affordable Systems

Ackerman Security provides one of the most affordable home security systems in the industry. For only $19.95 a month, customers can receive a full array of home security devices, including motion sensors, security cameras, touchscreens, and glass-break sensors. Each Ackerman security system is custom-built to ensure the client’s specific home security needs are being completely addressed. Ackerman provides a free consultation to help give customers an idea of the system requirements before they have to buy.

Home Automation

Ackerman also provides a number of impressive home automation options you can add to your security system including door sensors, wireless monitoring, various detectors, and other security equipment. Customers can arm/disarm their systems, control locks, thermostats, and lights, receive text and email notifications, and even view live video surveillance camera footage all through Ackerman’s mobile app.

Monitoring Service

In addition to building custom home security and automation systems, Ackerman Security systems provides professional monitoring service for burglars, fire situations, and medical emergencies. All systems have the option for broadband internet monitoring, which can be either a handy backup or less intrusive alternative to traditional landline monitoring.

Money-Back Guarantee

Ackerman strives to provide more in the customer service department by offering a 200% money-back guarantee. The company states on its website that they will pay customers double what they lost if their homes are robbed while under an armed Ackerman security system. The monitoring service will pay 100% of the affected customer’s insurance deductible and then pay them the same amount in cash.

Cons

Common Complaints

Common concerns of current customers report poor experiences with individual sales representatives. The complaints range from misrepresentation of overall cost, confusion regarding cancellation policies and improper installation. Some customers have even reported never receiving a legible copy of their contract.

Limited State Availability

According to the Ackerman website, the company only appears to service select parts of Georgia. Other companies in the home security industry cover either several or all 50 states in the U.S.

Top-Rated Companies Are Typically Available Nationwide

Our Recommendation

Ackerman Security does offer affordable systems, solid home automation options, a strong monitoring service, and money-back guarantee. Unfortunately, the company does have some customer complaints and has limited state availability.

In comparison to other security providers Ackerman Security does seem to have some limitations. And there is not a lot of public information around key points of business such as the company’s installation, equipment, technology, and contract requirements. For these reasons, we recommend that every potential customer read Ackerman security reviews and look into companies like Protect America and Frontpoint.

THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED! I’ve called on several different occasions, and was informed that someone would return my call the next business day, and this started two weeks ago. And til this day, I’m still awaiting a return call.

I have had Ackerman Security for a little over a year now. Up until recently I haven’t experienced any issue with their service or customer support. However a couple of weeks ago, the trouble light on my alarm panel came on in the middle of the night. Thinking it was just the battery I replaced the battery a few days later, but still had the trouble light. After seeing the battery didn’t resolve the issue i called Ackerman for further assistance. They did a quick test and discovered that my alarm system was no longer communicating with the central office and they scheduled a service call for the following week.

The following week the Ackerman technician showed up. My wife was home when he showed up and she called me to inform me that there would be a charged a service fee of $89.95. I wasn’t informed of this service fee when I spoke with them over the phone but whatever. The technician spoke with me over the phone and informed me that because my system wasn’t installed by Ackerman then any service call would be incur the $89.95 plus additional costs for parts. I also found out that this $89.95 only covered the first 30 minutes, and any time over that would incur even more charges. I thought the price was a bit steep, especially them charging per 30 minutes, but I figured it would be an easy fix so I was ok with the $89.95 service fee this time.

However a few minutes later I get a call back saying that the system would require more parts and additional installation to connect my alarm panel to my phone line which would obviously be way over the $89.95 service fee. The technician suggested installing wireless which is what I was about to ask him about. I had already inquired about wireless last year and was quoted $179.95 which was for everything including the service fee. However when I told the technician what I was quoted last year, he told me that I would have to pay the $179.95 PLUS the $89.95 service fee ($269.90 total). This did not seem right at all so I came home to talk to him in person. When I got home he further explained the issue with the alarm panel to me, but still he didn’t want to honor the $179.95 flat fee I was quoted last year. At this point I was getting quite irritated by his arrogance and condescending tone, so I just wanted him out of my house but of course he still wanted the $89.95 fee just for coming out. I told him to leave and that I would pay the $89.95 so he could leave but I would cancel my service. My wife gave wrote him the check for $89.95 and as soon as he left I called Ackerman to cancel my service.

I explained to the cancellations department what had happened and they informed me that the $179.95 wireless installation deal was still going on and I shouldn’t have had to pay an additional $89.95 on top of that. I told the rep the technician already left with my $89.95 and he said he would take care of it and to expect a call back later. About a half hour later I got a call from the Customer Retention department and the nice lady reiterated that I should have gotten the $179.95 wireless deal, but would credit my account the $89.95 I already paid toward the installation of the wireless system leaving me with only having to pay the difference of $90. I agreed to this and Ackerman will be out next week to install the wireless.

While this story had a satisfactory ending, this could have all been avoided if the technician would have honored the deal in the first place instead of treating me like I was stupid and expecting me to pay more than I had to. While their service fees are expensive, I can understand them if they didn’t install the system, but just don’t try to BS or rip me off by not honoring a deal you should know your company is offering. I would have gladly paid the $179.95 to install the wireless until I saw he was trying to stick me with the service fee on top of that.

I will stay with Ackerman because of the great customer service and their diligence in resolving this issue, but my interaction with this technician left bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Hopefully my wireless system will work great and I won’t need any more service calls in the near future.

Ackerman sales people keep on trying to get you to buy the most expensive system. I have an inexpensive system and it works well. Now that I am moving I must buy a new system for my new residence. If I do not use Ackerman I am bound for 15 months on my contract.
    Would not use them again.

Bought a brand new Ackerman system. The website advertises $18.95 monitoring service but due to the lack of phone line, the salesman decided to put in a cellular communicator and the monitoring costs jumped to $35.00/month. He also misrepresented some features of the alarm such as the sound level of the siren (stated 120 was 85 db) found in documentation actual level. Ackerman does not support crash and smash protection and uses a 4-2 alarm reporting format. One of the older formats but it does work reliably.

Overall not a hideous company to work with but some of the staff needs to read up on their manuals.

Contacted Ackerman as a result of two companies saying how satisfied they were. We had Protection 1, more interested in revenue than anything else, so gave up.
Ackermans’ rep was prompt, polite and answered all questions. Their service technician knew his job, changed it all in no time, sharp contrast to some bumbling idiot Protection1 sent us once. Think he was learning at our cost!

I tecently had an Ackerman technican come to review our system. He tweaked it and got everything running and then, told my wife he had to replace the emergency back-up battery and a siren. She insisted that he leave the materials and when I got home, I had the battery tested by an electrician. It was a 12 volt battery and rated a full 12 (actually 13!) volts. When I hooked up the horn to the battery, it worked fine, in both modes. In short, he ripped us off for a $50 battery and a $45 siren we didn’t need. Canceling my policy.
