Pros

Affordable Systems

Ackerman Security provides one of the most affordable home security systems in the industry. For only $19.95 a month, customers can receive a full array of home security devices, including motion sensors, security cameras, touchscreens, and glass-break sensors. Each Ackerman security system is custom-built to ensure the client’s specific home security needs are being completely addressed. Ackerman provides a free consultation to help give customers an idea of the system requirements before they have to buy.

Home Automation

Ackerman also provides a number of impressive home automation options you can add to your security system including door sensors, wireless monitoring, various detectors, and other security equipment. Customers can arm/disarm their systems, control locks, thermostats, and lights, receive text and email notifications, and even view live video surveillance camera footage all through Ackerman’s mobile app.

Monitoring Service

In addition to building custom home security and automation systems, Ackerman Security systems provides professional monitoring service for burglars, fire situations, and medical emergencies. All systems have the option for broadband internet monitoring, which can be either a handy backup or less intrusive alternative to traditional landline monitoring.

Money-Back Guarantee

Ackerman strives to provide more in the customer service department by offering a 200% money-back guarantee. The company states on its website that they will pay customers double what they lost if their homes are robbed while under an armed Ackerman security system. The monitoring service will pay 100% of the affected customer’s insurance deductible and then pay them the same amount in cash.

Cons

Common Complaints

Common concerns of current customers report poor experiences with individual sales representatives. The complaints range from misrepresentation of overall cost, confusion regarding cancellation policies and improper installation. Some customers have even reported never receiving a legible copy of their contract.

Limited State Availability

According to the Ackerman website, the company only appears to service select parts of Georgia. Other companies in the home security industry cover either several or all 50 states in the U.S.

Top-Rated Companies Are Typically Available Nationwide

Our Recommendation

Ackerman Security does offer affordable systems, solid home automation options, a strong monitoring service, and money-back guarantee. Unfortunately, the company does have some customer complaints and has limited state availability.

In comparison to other security providers Ackerman Security does seem to have some limitations. And there is not a lot of public information around key points of business such as the company’s installation, equipment, technology, and contract requirements. For these reasons, we recommend that every potential customer read Ackerman security reviews and look into companies like Protect America and Frontpoint.

Ackerman’s sales practices are very deceptive and dishonest. They will tell you that a firm term contract is not necessary because they will take over monitoring existing equipment. They will then ask you to “authorize” the installation of a new control panel and connect to that existing equipment, and you do that by signing an electronic hand held device, so you don’t really know what you are signing. It is only later when you want to cancel that you find out you signed a long term contract, which you were not able to read on that hand held device. Very deceptive. There are several honest companies out there, my advice is to stay away from Ackerman.

I signed a three year contract with Ackerman. I paid, in full, the first year of $239.40 in Feb. 2017. I get another charge on my credit card in April 2017, without my consent. I called to inquire and they said the additional cost was for a tax increase and would occur every year. They went on to say that they didn’t need my consent to charge this additional cost to my credit card. I was livid at this time. How could a company be able to keep charging you, after you have paid for the year and use your credit card without consent? I then proceed to cancel this contract and they said it would cost me $478.80 to cancel. Lesson learned. When this contract is up, I will definitely be going back to ADT.

If you’re thinking about getting their service, please DON’T! They have a 3 year contract, their panel is really bad and not loud enough and when you call to complaint they say they will call you back and send a tech over and they don’t do. You call again and go over the same process and nothing gets resolved. You get upset and try to cancel but you’re stuck on this 3 year contract. I live in a 3 level town house and if I’m on the second floor and the siren goes off I won’t hear it. REALLY BAD! Plus and most important, when the siren goes off, it takes them 30 minutes to check on you.
This is my sincere review. Do not go for this companie.

I called Ackerman security to cancel my service due to the salesman…he wouldn’t return calls…sold me services I didn’t want…ect. I was very upset until I called the retention department and spoke to Kim…she was very calm…and walked me threw all the errors and corrected them as we spoke…she even asked me to call her back in a couple of weeks for follow up and possible info about saving more money on my system.

I have had Ackerman Security for about 12 years and have been satisfied for about the first 8 of those years until things started going bad. I converted to wireless about 2 years ago and have been introduced to the worst customer service possible. Techs who didn’t arrive or even call, calls placed on hold over and over, false alarms at 5:00 in the morning that don’t ring in to Ackerman and problems with cancellation services. I will never recommend Ackerman to my friends again. I’m currently trying to cancel and get a refund, but so far, I haven’t been able to even talk to someone who seems able or willing to help me.

Technician Joseph H arrived at 9 a.m. today and provided service most excellent. Mr. H, a very seasoned technician, sets a standard of excellence. He provided some of the best technical service I have ever experienced with any technician with any service. He made sure that a sensor device was installed correctly–not sort of correctly–as had been committed by the fellow who did the first installation and then skipped out. I gave Mr. H an unopened motion sensor which had been left (apparently mistakenly) by the fellow who did the half-vast job of installation. I would like to thank whoever assigned Mr. H to service my problem profusely. Mr. H is a treasure of a technician. It’s a horrible travesty that more people do not take the time and effort like Mr. H to treat each customer as if he or she were a kindred relative. Sincerely, HG P.S. I’m now extremely likely to recommend Ackerman Security to friends and relatives only because of the experience I had today with Joseph H service call.

I had picked this company from the commercial because they seemed so sincere, and I really needed the protection from a stalker that had already attacked me once, and was arrested 8 times from me taking his picture in front of my house. the state victim service paid in full for 1 year of service, the salesman brought his supervisor, looked over my existing equipment, at first I was told they would use my existing sensors and infer red cameras, ( which are way better than there’s). But the salesman seen what the state was paying, and was like a kid in the candy store he ordered all new things except the wall panel, and the month bill quoted was now 4 times that amount. Since day 1 I had problems with the system and my cameras, but since I didn’t pay the payment when I called about the issues I was cursed out by customer service 3 times and then told if I am not pleased they will just shut off my system, I was going to keep them if the service worked out for me. there cameras capture everything except people, only every 30 mins, when it’s supposed to be by motion, I have move leaves blowing video than anything, and the system went off twice while I was away for over an hour, no call, no police response, a neighbor called me, and I had to unarm it remotely, WOW I would advise any and everyone to not walk run away from Ackerman if you care about your safety.

Ackerman security requires a land line for its security system to work. I have a home phone line when opened an account with Ackerman and about a year later, I switched to Comcast for high speed internet and no longer using the Verizon DSL with a phone line. Every month, Ackerman still continue to automatically charges my credit card on file with them without telling me my security system is no longer work because I don’t have a land line phone at home. After about 9 months, my security system was activated couple times and I never received any phone call from Ackerman. I called them to close this account and learned from them that they didn’t receive any signal from my home security system because I don’t have a lane line phone. The customer service representative also told me that since I had 3 year contract with them, and if I close my account on today, I still have to pay them the monthly contract fee for the remaining 10 months (which is a total of 19 months being charged without any monitoring service from them. It is really a rip off). Previously, I signed up for 3 years contract with them because they told me that I’ll have 3 months service free which will be applied a free month to each year, and so far I have never received any one month free from them until now. This company is one of the worst ones in the home security industry, and I recommend people to stay away from them for a much better service from some one else.

I wanted to remove a portion of my service which was the Total Connect but I was unable to do so until my three year contract expires. The sales person was not straight forward about this and made it seem as though it was an “add on:” that could be removed at any point. I feel as though they were not very forthcoming with all the details. Additionally, I was on hold for over 20 minutes at two different intervals which resulted in me hanging up.

Finally, the sensors do not stick very well and it would cost around $89 for someone to come out and check it…Really??

I signed a one year contract, at that time the sales person said that once our contract expired we would be finished. If we wanted to renew we could, if not then the contract was finished. I called today because our contract is up, but I still keep getting charged. Customer service said I had to send a letter 60 days prior to my contract ending, if I didn’t (which I did not) then the contract would automatically renew for 12 months! To cancel is going to cost me over $300, I’m beyond frustrated.

I hate that you auto-renew into another lengthy contract after your initial term instead of being on a month to month plan. That’s very predatory. In addition I’ve had issues for weeks with my carbon monoxide detector setting my alarm off (constant beeping on the panel) giving random tamper error codes when no on has touched it, and the alarm itself constantly chirping. I’ve replaced with brand new batteries and have experienced the same issue. Called Ackerman 3x on this issue and had a technician come out and check the alarm and the battery and he said everything was fine as far as he could see. I researched it and discovered your alarm may do this if it’s at its end of life. I go and take the alarm down and sure enough on the inside, it has an expiration date that’s passed 3 months ago. I didn’t think of this b/c i’m not an alarm expert but I would expect that my alarm company would have questioned me about that or told me where i could find that informatino or discovered it themselves when they came on site to test the equipment! And in phone calls i was passed around so many times to the wrong department, i got exasperated even explaining the issue. Ackerman is fine so long as you don’t have any issues but so is any other company. Whenever i do have an issue I tend to get poor service. Whenever i’m in the range of switching I will try my best to find a better monitoring service.

Wake up at 3.55am to the alarm beeping (not going off, but beeping)… startled I look at it and wonder if someone is trying to break in. After checking, I go back to the wall unit which says “error 6F”. I turn it off, rearm it and it still says “6F”. The next day I call in to Ackerman to discuss and see what the issue is.
CALL 1: The person on the line asks for the address, then right away proceeds to say that he is very familiar with this code, and that there’s a tower down, and that the issue would be fixed within 24 hours. He was very sure. He claimed that if the alarm was tripped, it would still sound off, but that Ackerman would not receive an alert, and that “anyone breaking in would not know the difference”.
36 hours later, the issue is still there. So I call in.
CALL 2: The lady at the other end of the line says she is unaware that there were any towers out, and that I need to check the alarm, and trip it – if I do not receive a call from Ackerman, that I should call back in. So I do… and there is no call. So I call them back.
CALL3: I call back in and explain all the above. The lady says that we’ll need to have a technician come in and take a look at it, and that they accept all major credit cards. Of course, I ask why I will be needing a credit card, to which she replies that it’s an $89.99 fee for them to come out and check the system and that they do not cover hardware. Well, I instantly decided that I didn’t want to continue service, and asked to cancel. Without hesitation she said she’d transfer me to the cancelation line.
The cancelation folks go ahead and notify me that the system I have is a 2G, and that they are now upgrading to 4G and that I’d need to upgrade and pay $140(ish) but that they’d reduce it to $49.99 for me. In asking why the service was abruptly cut off and why we didn’t receive a notification, I was told that they mailed out a letter. I confirmed that my household had not received this letter, and had we received it, we would have promptly taken action as it is a matter of security and not a “for fun” subscription that we have. I was told that they were sorry I didn’t receive it, and that there’s nothing they can do, but that I still needed to upgrade to the 4G, and that the $49.99 fee could not be waived.
That being said here’s the summary for if you’ve just scrolled through:
    1. Service was cut off with NO NOTICE.
    2. Had I not asked to terminate service, I would have been charged $89.99 to be told that I needed to upgrade to 4G.
    3. They DID NOT send me a letter stating that I needed to upgrade to 4G.
    4. My household had no service for a period of 9 days until the technician would be able to come out and install the device.
    5. All I was offered (after being adamant about compensation) was a free month ($25 value).
    6. If you go to their Facebook page, they have disabled the ability for you to rate their business.

Battery went out right at one year now told I need to pay 89.95 for first 30 minutes for them to replace it. Then tried to cancel my yearly contract, but they telling me I entered into a 3 yr contract, which I did not have in my records for some odd reason… I know I did not enter a 3 yr contract with any company. They had to email the page they claim the 3 yr is on and it has my initials so they say I signed it. But, why didn’t I have this in my records with all the other agreement copies? This company is doing some crooked things. I do not get in 3 yr contracts with any company, period. So what they did to add that 3 year on the page that for some reason was not left in my possession, is illegal. I did not sign for that, for a fact. Now I ma stuck, pay for service can’t use or cough up $800. I have to prove they are scamming folks. I am seeking legal counsel and possible class action. I see this on several boards where customers signed for 1 yr but now it switched to 3 yrs. They think we are stupid.
