Pros

Affordable Systems

Ackerman Security provides one of the most affordable home security systems in the industry. For only $19.95 a month, customers can receive a full array of home security devices, including motion sensors, security cameras, touchscreens, and glass-break sensors. Each Ackerman security system is custom-built to ensure the client’s specific home security needs are being completely addressed. Ackerman provides a free consultation to help give customers an idea of the system requirements before they have to buy.

Home Automation

Ackerman also provides a number of impressive home automation options you can add to your security system including door sensors, wireless monitoring, various detectors, and other security equipment. Customers can arm/disarm their systems, control locks, thermostats, and lights, receive text and email notifications, and even view live video surveillance camera footage all through Ackerman’s mobile app.

Monitoring Service

In addition to building custom home security and automation systems, Ackerman Security systems provides professional monitoring service for burglars, fire situations, and medical emergencies. All systems have the option for broadband internet monitoring, which can be either a handy backup or less intrusive alternative to traditional landline monitoring.

Money-Back Guarantee

Ackerman strives to provide more in the customer service department by offering a 200% money-back guarantee. The company states on its website that they will pay customers double what they lost if their homes are robbed while under an armed Ackerman security system. The monitoring service will pay 100% of the affected customer’s insurance deductible and then pay them the same amount in cash.

Cons

Common Complaints

Common concerns of current customers report poor experiences with individual sales representatives. The complaints range from misrepresentation of overall cost, confusion regarding cancellation policies and improper installation. Some customers have even reported never receiving a legible copy of their contract.

Limited State Availability

According to the Ackerman website, the company only appears to service select parts of Georgia. Other companies in the home security industry cover either several or all 50 states in the U.S.

Top-Rated Companies Are Typically Available Nationwide

Our Recommendation

Ackerman Security does offer affordable systems, solid home automation options, a strong monitoring service, and money-back guarantee. Unfortunately, the company does have some customer complaints and has limited state availability.

In comparison to other security providers Ackerman Security does seem to have some limitations. And there is not a lot of public information around key points of business such as the company’s installation, equipment, technology, and contract requirements. For these reasons, we recommend that every potential customer read Ackerman security reviews and look into companies like Protect America and Frontpoint.

i am disappointed with ackerman security. my security status system indicated low battery @ front door. replaced batteries , and status system still indicated low battery. called akerman security systems and the young lady i spoke with said the system would recognize new batteries within 24-48 hrs. , then reset itself. never happened. i called ackerman security three additional times because the problem continued for a week . bottom line i paid $85.00 for replacement batteries for motion detector. i realize my motion detector does not have a low battery indicator , but my contract does identify each piece of equipment in my house. the technician who scheduled a service call , not mentioning $85.00 fee should have mentioned the motion detector batteries. called ackerman security this morning 9/21/15 after repairs were completed , ask to speak with supervisor and was told one was not available at that moment . representative said supervisor would return call today. as of 11:00 p.m.
    no return call.
i hope my experiences benefit someone else .

i am disappointed with ackerman security. I was so happy to get ackerman and when i reached out to them because my system blanked out they started quoting me numbers and prices to send someone out. i had only had the system for 2 months why pay more money if i just had gotten it. i called my salesman demetrice who apologized and stated he would call me back on monday. I had yet to receive a call and that was back in may. I talked to a nice young lady who apologized for no one calling me back and that she would eliminate the fees and she would call me back the next day because i stated i went with another service provider. Unfortunately, she did not but after a couple if weeks i hadn’t heard from anyone nor saw any bills. However, last month i got a bill from ackerman and i wondered wow how did this start again. So today i decided to call and all i got was transferred six times, yelled at told that my account has gotten transferred to collections… As of 7/21/2015 i had a balance of $57.90 and a statement to prove it but she stated that i basically was lying . I hung up called another person she basically repeated what Sheresa said because they were next to each other. But then she stated it was a clerical error they did send me a bill but now i have to pay $837 if i want to get out of collections. How? yes i have a contract fee but how did it jump from $28.95 to $837 in one day. I was willing to pay $150 today for what i owe and two months in advanced even though i was told that it was canceled. They told me it was nothing they could do and if i want to avoid collections to pay $837 with them. Honestly what has happened to customer service. My whole neighborhood is ackerman and i will be talking to them about this scenario to let them know what type of company they are dealing with. A company who has employees like Sheresa who tell me there isn’t anything she can do, to deal with the collections agency and was just plain disrespectful.

Service was good until we needed to cancel due to a move. Then it was difficult to get them to acknowledge that we cancelled our service. We filled out the forms needed and sent them in via email, and regular mail. I called again to talk to someone about the billing to recieve our money back for being billed when we had sent in a cancelation request. I had to send another email with the form as proof that we cancelled in the time I stated.
Very difficult to get them to stop billing you, and get your money back for being over billed.

Where do I even begin. They lied and said that they could beat ADT in price and service, but the truth is that their cost includes NO service calls, no batteries, no coming out to check what’s wrong.. nothing! We literally had our system beaping for DAYS (every 1.5 minutes btw) before it was resolved. They said they would be charging us to come out (which they told us when we signed up was covered), and additionally that we couldn’t come out for 3 days. We have small children and our sleep was consistently interrupted until they fixed the issue. They nickle and dime you for everything, even a battery! They apparently have an increased price that includes a PORTION of service calls, but that takes them above their competitors prices. The last straw was today.

Further, they sent us a delinquent notice thorugh a creditor because our card expired (expiration date renewed) instead of trying to reach out to us to resolve the issue. We called to cancel because this took us over the top in frustration, and when we did, we were told that was fine, but we would have to pay through the end of our contract regardless – an additional 2 months!!!!

This is an absolutely TERRIBLE company. No one knows what they are doing, and I would not recommend them EVER!!!

The customers service is horrible. I have been a customer for 2 years and lost my key remote. I have been calling and calling for more than 3 months and NO one has called by back or has YET to arrange replacement of my device but they sure take my payment ontime. When I call customer service no one seems to know the process and transfers me to parts but no one calls me back. Totally unacceptable

This company charges unfairly for service calls. One example is a 10’dollar gasoline charge on top of an 80 dollar service call. Also their definition of “new customer” as compared to an “existing customer “.

Ackerman Security is by far the worst when it comes to customer service. We were sold the wireless system with the understanding that it would be safer. This increased our monthly cost; however, we were willing to pay this because it was supposed safer. Well since that time we have experienced 3 outages, one of which happened today. I called Ackermam after putting our system onto test and there was no signal or call from Ackerman. When I got a representative I was told that if I wanted someone to come today I would have to pay a $189 service fee. If they came during normal business hours I would have to pay $89. This was unacceptable from a customer service perspective because I am in essence paying for someone to come and flip a switch and repair faulty equipment. The agent forwarded our case to a supervisor who called us back 3 hours later only to tell us that the customer service manager was not on until Monday. So we are basically left without a security system until we can find another provider. Because of this we are leaving Ackerman and moving to another provider. The customer reps and salesman suck…just like Ackerman does. So long Ackerman and thank yoy for nothing but headaches during our time with you and your lack of customer service. I will go on every social page I can find to let the world know just how low your rates and service really are!

My Representative, was absolutely fabulous! She arrived at my home on time in a highly professional manor and ready to take care of my needs. Here knowledge of the products was great. She delivered everything that was promised and her follow up was impeccable. I highly recommend Ackerman. Their monitoring fees are considerably less than what I was receiving. Glad I made the switch!

We have had Ackerman Security for the past six years, paid nearly $1,000 in up-front equipment costs as well as $38 monthly for monitoring over wireless system. One window unit is giving us an error code and Ackerman states they need to charges us $89 for a service call. After paying Ackerman nearly $5k over the past six years, I’m looking to switch.

To make a long story short, we had an old alarm system that used an older cellular protocol to communicate alarms to Ackerman. In April the service that monitored that protocol was discontinued, therefore our alarm system was not being monitored. Ackerman made no effort to inform customers of this. We eventually found out our system was not communicating with Ackerman both through an automated call and by triggering the alarm accidentally and not getting a call from the monitoring service. A service call was scheduled, and the technician told us our radio was no good and a new radio was installed in August – no mention that the cellular monitoring service for my type of radio was taken offline. To summarize the entire issue Ackerman came out 2 more times because the radio was not working and then tried to up sell me a new system after determining the new radio was not compatible with my system. In the lat visit their technician was honest and told me about the cellular monitoring being taken offline in April. In the past 4 months I have talked to Ackerman 6 or 7 times, was told 3 times a manager would return my calls which never happened, and I asked Ackerman to refund my money for the monitoring and terminated service. The radio has been removed and I have received only a partial refund for the radio no refund for the monitoring they were not providing, and I was also billed for 2 more months when I terminated my contract. You can read more in my BBB complaint, id #27381063.

I have had Ackerman Security for a little over a year now. Up until recently I haven’t experienced any issue with their service or customer support. However a couple of weeks ago, the trouble light on my alarm panel came on in the middle of the night. Thinking it was just the battery I replaced the battery a few days later, but still had the trouble light. After seeing the battery didn’t resolve the issue i called Ackerman for further assistance. They did a quick test and discovered that my alarm system was no longer communicating with the central office and they scheduled a service call for the following week.

The following week the Ackerman technician showed up. My wife was home when he showed up and she called me to inform me that there would be a charged a service fee of $89.95. I wasn’t informed of this service fee when I spoke with them over the phone but whatever. The technician spoke with me over the phone and informed me that because my system wasn’t installed by Ackerman then any service call would be incur the $89.95 plus additional costs for parts. I also found out that this $89.95 only covered the first 30 minutes, and any time over that would incur even more charges. I thought the price was a bit steep, especially them charging per 30 minutes, but I figured it would be an easy fix so I was ok with the $89.95 service fee this time.

However a few minutes later I get a call back saying that the system would require more parts and additional installation to connect my alarm panel to my phone line which would obviously be way over the $89.95 service fee. The technician suggested installing wireless which is what I was about to ask him about. I had already inquired about wireless last year and was quoted $179.95 which was for everything including the service fee. However when I told the technician what I was quoted last year, he told me that I would have to pay the $179.95 PLUS the $89.95 service fee ($269.90 total). This did not seem right at all so I came home to talk to him in person. When I got home he further explained the issue with the alarm panel to me, but still he didn’t want to honor the $179.95 flat fee I was quoted last year. At this point I was getting quite irritated by his arrogance and condescending tone, so I just wanted him out of my house but of course he still wanted the $89.95 fee just for coming out. I told him to leave and that I would pay the $89.95 so he could leave but I would cancel my service. My wife gave wrote him the check for $89.95 and as soon as he left I called Ackerman to cancel my service.

I explained to the cancellations department what had happened and they informed me that the $179.95 wireless installation deal was still going on and I shouldn’t have had to pay an additional $89.95 on top of that. I told the rep the technician already left with my $89.95 and he said he would take care of it and to expect a call back later. About a half hour later I got a call from the Customer Retention department and the nice lady reiterated that I should have gotten the $179.95 wireless deal, but would credit my account the $89.95 I already paid toward the installation of the wireless system leaving me with only having to pay the difference of $90. I agreed to this and Ackerman will be out next week to install the wireless.

While this story had a satisfactory ending, this could have all been avoided if the technician would have honored the deal in the first place instead of treating me like I was stupid and expecting me to pay more than I had to. While their service fees are expensive, I can understand them if they didn’t install the system, but just don’t try to BS or rip me off by not honoring a deal you should know your company is offering. I would have gladly paid the $179.95 to install the wireless until I saw he was trying to stick me with the service fee on top of that.

I will stay with Ackerman because of the great customer service and their diligence in resolving this issue, but my interaction with this technician left bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Hopefully my wireless system will work great and I won’t need any more service calls in the near future.

Ackerman sales people keep on trying to get you to buy the most expensive system. I have an inexpensive system and it works well. Now that I am moving I must buy a new system for my new residence. If I do not use Ackerman I am bound for 15 months on my contract.
    Would not use them again.

Bought a brand new Ackerman system. The website advertises $18.95 monitoring service but due to the lack of phone line, the salesman decided to put in a cellular communicator and the monitoring costs jumped to $35.00/month. He also misrepresented some features of the alarm such as the sound level of the siren (stated 120 was 85 db) found in documentation actual level. Ackerman does not support crash and smash protection and uses a 4-2 alarm reporting format. One of the older formats but it does work reliably.

Overall not a hideous company to work with but some of the staff needs to read up on their manuals.
