The Good

  • Free In-Home Consultation
  • 24/7 Professional Monitoring
  • Free Standard Installation
  • Home Automation Available
  • Controlled via Mobile App

We like that AT&T offers a free in-home consultation for new customers. This helps ensure customers purchase the right service plan and equipment appropriate for their particular home. Also, AT&T’s home security systems are compatible with existing home security hardware, making it a seamless transition for customers who have existing systems. In case of a power outage, its equipment comes with a 24-hour battery backup. If you’re looking for home automation solutions, this feature is available, but will come at an additional cost.

The Bad

  • More Expensive Than Others
  • Minimum 2-Year Agreement
  • Early Cancellation Fees Starting At $640
  • Poor Customer Reviews

AT&T’s minimum contract is a 2-year agreement starting at $39.99/mo. We have found AT&T’s monthly fees to be higher than the industry average. Also, upon signing up with AT&T you will always have to put money down, anywhere from $29.99-$99.99 depending on the package you elect. Many industry leaders will charge nothing upfront, which is why we have taken this into consideration when scoring AT&T Digital Life. If you’re wanting to include home automation, this will run you between $54.99-$64.99 per month, depending on the level of automation you want. *See the equipment tab at the top of this page for complete equipment details.

Based on user reviews we’ve received, common customer complaints include installation issues as a result of poor installation practices by AT&T representatives, billing issues resulting in fees, high installation costs, poor customer service, and delays in having the system installed.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for home security at an affordable price and you live in their service area, AT&T Digital Life is definitely worth looking into. AT&T uses top-of-the-line wireless equipment and provides their customers with an easy-to-use app to control and monitor their system. Also, if you decide to switch over to AT&T’s service from another home-security provider, you may be able to keep your current system.

However, customers must sign a contract and you will have to put money down, whereas our top rated companies don’t require their customers to sign a contract or charge money upfront. The monthly fees are slightly higher than the industry standard and home automation is only available in an upgraded package with a higher upfront cost and increased monthly rate.

Contract and Cancellation

AT&T Digital Life requires at least a two year service agreement for new customers. Each contract will come with its own separate equipment fees and monthly charges. Customers should look over the contract prior to signing up to make sure the terms are clear and all associated fees are made known.

Since there is a two year contract, terminating the contract has its own process. If for any reason the customer cancels prior to the end of the contract, an early termination fee (ranging from $740-$840) will be charged.

AT&T Digital Life offers three packages:

Smart Security

  • $29.99 due at signing
  • $39.99 a month with 2 year security agreement

Smart Security & Automation

  • $49.99 due at signing
  • $54.99 a month with 2 year security agreement

Premium Security & Automation

  • $99.99 due at signing
  • $64.99 a month with 2 year security agreement

Monitoring

All three of AT&T’s Digital Life packages come with 24/7 professional monitoring, as well as a mobile app which allows customers to monitor and control their own system via their smart phone. Customers will need to download the AT&T Digital Life app in order to monitor their home remotely.

Monitoring with the automation packages include:

  • Video monitoring – view live or recorded video footage
  • Door lock status – remotely lock or unlock doors
  • Energy monitoring – conserve energy by adjusting temperature and control of appliances
  • Water detection monitoring – monitors leaks and ambient temperature

Installation

AT&T Digital Life home security and automation packages require professional installation. There is no DIY option. The benefit with the AT&T Digital Life professional installation is that it does not come at an additional charge to the customer. It is considered part of the service once the first fee has been paid.

Customers will need to check availability prior to purchasing AT&T Digital Life. If the services are available in the desired state/cities, customers will need to schedule a time for the technician to come out and install the system. Homeowners will need to be present during the time of the installation.

Customer service is the worst of any company i have ever dealt with. You are put on hold for an extensive amount of time (intentionally to get you to go away) and transferred to incompentent, script readers that cannot make a decision. They are more interested in talking about the contract your in verses resolving a minor quality issue. They do not see the value or care about customer satifaction. They hire techs that do the installation with little integrity on quality of work. DO NOT use this company or you will regret your decision. Take the time to get a respectable, customer responsive security provider.

I have had Digital Life for nearly 3 years now and have loved the protection. The alarm has gone off a few times and they were always EXTREMELY quick at calling me to see if it was a genuine threat and when the police had to be called, they took care of that very quickly as well. I have just the basic system ($39.99/month) and it works very well for my home.

Unfortunately, making my monthly payments has recently become a major problem due to technical problems on their website AND the phone app. I typically use the website to make my payments, but I have had to use the app once or twice, and have never had a problem until June 2016. Every time I would try to submit my payment, an “error” message would come up. I’d try to make the payment on the app and the same thing happened when I tried to submit my payment there. I tried for several days, at different times of the day, and I could never complete my payment. Finally, after 35 minutes on hold, a representative told me that I could mail in my payment or pay it over the phone for a $5/charge. She then added, “If you mail it, you’ll also be charged $5 as a late fee because you’re bill is due today”. I tried to explain to her that I had been trying to make my payment for a week and that I was NOT going to pay $5 for any reason because it was THEIR fault I couldn’t pay my bill on time as I have every month for the past three years.

She did, eventually, get me over to another customer care agent who waived the fee and took care of my payment over the phone. They apologized for the error online and said they aren’t sure what the problem could be, but that it shouldn’t happen again. Well, here we are in July 2016 and I once again can not make an online (or app) payment. I managed to do enough online searches to find an address to mail my payment. I”m MAILING it a week in advance now to ensure it gets there in time and I have requested paper billing from now on rather than electronic billing because they apparently don’t care about how functional their website is.

I am afraid that this type of irresponsible customer service will be reflected if I have to use their system in the event of an emergency. Are they going to get my distress signal from my app if I need to use it? Will my keypad function properly if it has to go through their system to notify them? I have no idea – and I don’t have 45 minutes to sit on hold to talk to an agent who will surely try to convince me that “everything is okay.”

When you are offered a deal or promotion when you call in for services and or products and it is not noted in the system always and when you get your bill and the deal and or promotion is not on there and you call the customer service center and the reps and not all the reps are rude to you and or leave you on hold waiting for a supervisor and never come back to the line that’s poor service from AT&T and the poor service is a continuance every time you call in is not a good sign the CEO of this company is assessing the complaints by customers to fix the problem….Poor Service From AT&T….

Absolutely the worst customer service I have experienced ever. I have had to call several times and the min wait time is 30 mins, the longest was 1 hour and 15 mins to explain my situation online and then be transferred again. Cannot pay bill on line if you miss your due date because you cannot log in to the sustem. tried to set up auto pay but they could not get my card to process the payment. The final blow was when I went on vacation for a week and their thermostat could not connect with the main box they installed and the AC did not come for a week raising the house temps to 94 degrees here in South Texas which killed 6 of my Salt water fish in our aquarium. I went back to Monotronics, they matched the equipment that ATT installed and it was a dollar per month cheaper

DO NOT PURCHASE aa AT&T digital life system. Used for two years (contract duration) and system broke down at the end of the two years due to supposed upgrades. Had 4 technicians out and NONE could fix the problems. Tried tech support over the phone and ended up being stuck on the phone for upwards of 50 minutes. After the 4th technician showed up and tried to run me through the drills again (new upgrades causing horrible problems especially in the Arvada, CO area), I cancelled the plan. It was very difficult to do so; put on hold for over an hour and then transferred to another department and put on a “brief” hold for another 30 minutes. Finally, I got some help from a wonderful person who stayed on the line and told the other service person, “She does not want anything but to cancel the service. Cancel her service.” I was offered three months free blah blah blah blah and AT&T had no record of my bill being waived since I had no service for 2 months, and now claims I owe $146 for service that did not work. DO NOT USE AT&T Digital Life.

I signed up on June 5, at ATT store for digital life. Installation was June 11, wasn’t satisfied with the equipment, tech couldn’t get the door Keypad to work. It took him almost more than 12 hours t install. I called to cancel on June 17, uninstall appt for all the equipment was on June 20. They took everything and left holes on my walls. July 18, I got a bill for the amount of $245, not knowing why and been on hold getting in touch with ATT Digital for 30 minutes.. This have been the worst security company I’ve ever signed up for.

I have to say, this is the worst experience I have ever had with any AT&T product. First, I was told I can bundle Digital Life with my current AT&T subscription. This proved to be false information. Then I was told I would have fire department monitoring, this as well proved to be false. I did not even get all of my entry points monitored. On top of those negatives listed, the equipment looks like shit! I now have ugly/ bulky plastic squares, taped to my doors, and HALF of my windows. Along with two enormous boxes plugged into my outlets. And if that is not enough, when I call AT&T, I am told that since I do not know the answer to my security question, they will not talk to me about my account, and that there is no other way to verify that I own the account. No other way?!?!?! How about my address? My SSN? My other three accounts linked to AT&T totaling more then $300 a month? Very disappointed in you AT&T, your about to lose a 10+ year customer. Good job.

I was in an att store before Christmas buying a new iPhone. I noticed a sales chart the talked about the digital home security. I was paying 29.95 at ADT and told that to the salesman. He said they were offering a two day special and could beat that. I had two others with me that can verify that he said he could get us down to 24.99 with free installation. I said that sounds good and he scheduled an install. The system was not as good as the one I had. No siren but a faint beep. With the other one I had digital video and this just took one still picture. I really thought that saving $5.00 a month was a wash.
My wife was paying the bills and since we had att phone and internet, we thought the monthly fee was inclusive since the salesman said he would bundle for a discount. Today. I looked at a new bill for $54.99 and was shocked. I called and talk to two people and then a supervisor. Each started at 10% and then $100 over two years. That would make the monthly bill $48.99 a month. I explained that they should check the market and it was over twice as much as other were charging for a superior service. They sent me to their supervisor Roseanna, RX9420, and after an hour wait time, she could only come up with the same resolution, 10% discount.
I asked to send me the signed agreement and they only sent me the papers I had never seen. I once again asked for something with my signature or agreement and they just said that upon installation I had agreed to it. I asked why would I cancel a 29$.95 service for an inferior $54.99 a month fee? I know I am 72 but senility has not yet set in. I was then told I owed over $400 for an early termination fee. What a bazaar business dealing. Well, I will wait till I receive something with my signature and in the meantime contact my daughter-in-law who works in California consumer affairs and my grandson with the DA office in San Diego. I am interested in this case since I feel others have been abuse by the fraudulent sales tactics.

I should have just followed th suggestions of the hundreds of other people disappointed with this so called security service provided by AT&T. It was horrible just horrible and I only had the service for 14 days. The only reason I kept it that long was to get my old company to come out and switch everything back. From start to finish, installation was horrible, horrible out of date keypads you receive, horrible customer service, to the App that needs so many updates to even be close to what Alarm.com and other companies can do. At&t are not ready for the world of home security. I did not feel safe at all. So the tech who came to initally install left live wires out in turn shocked my husband. I had no clue about this because I dumbly trusted that he put everything back where it was supposed to go, yeah silly me, wires were out not covered and our box is in our master closet in our home so it’s not like it was a place we could avoid. Ridiculous! Not only did I have to wait an hour on the phone for a rep to cancel, but I did that 3 times because the first representative hung up on me and did not call back. By the 3rd time I was furious. I cannot say enough how disappointed I am in this service and they had the nerve to send a tech to remove their stuff and he had the nerve to come at the wrong time and ask me over and over if I had changed my mind about the service. I am guessing he did not want to do his job if uninstalling that day. Also, the tech who came to “fix” the wires was not up to date on the functions of the app. I would ask him questions and he had no clue what I was talking about. On top of all that I recieved a bill for Digital Life a $100 bill. Can’t say that surprised me, they would never let you go without some kind of strings attached. Although I was told over and over I would NOT be billed for any service if I cancelled within the 14 day period. Read the fine print people. Do not listen to anything they say. I also chat with tech support and billing reps alot and they are usually really nice and poilte but I chatted with someone today and her tone through chat, yes through chat, was very rude and impolite, no emapthy whatsoever for the customer. It was very upsetting to me. I meant to type this up and post it back in June when this all happened but today put the icing on the cake. I am trying to figure out a way to get all AT&T stuff out of my life, internet, uverse, everything. I am tired. Too bad they have taken over everything.
    SAD LOYAL CUSTOMER
PS. (Talking to a nice nice rep on the phone who says my account wasnt completely cancelled, how about that:-/) Talk about messed up! This is horrible! I am SO DONE!

We have had this system for one month. It worked great for 2 weeks then the keyless lock wouldn’t work. They will charge us for a technician to come out. So, we just lock it ourselves. Trapped in a 2 year contract for a piece of crap. When we called, we were told to Google how to fix if we didn’t want to be charged. 2 weeks. Epic fail and a waste of money.

After having Digital Life AT&T very unsatisfied. I just want to say that do not bother to get AT&T Digital Life it is not worth it. The camera did not do motion sensing on people vandalizing my daughter’s car and even people walking by. They only detected cars are passing by. In my 14 day trial we even put the camera closer the area that I wanted to be focus on to be recorded while I was not home. Even with the motion sensor highest sensitivity did not work. So they try to work out a deal for me In getting to the alarm which I’m not going to be paying so much money for offer they gave me. get the same thing for a cheaper price with the alarm of a different.att digital life was useless to me so I decide to cancel so it would mean breaking my contract cuz I passed the 14 day trial.

FRAUD! This company needs to be thoroughly investigated. Everything promised is a lie and they take no accountability for their lies. There is a minimum 30 minute wait time to speak to a customer service representative. They lie about their fees. Make sure everything offered (3 months free service) is emailed to you or you will get a bill without a doubt. If you call to complain good luck wasting 1 hour of your time. It’s basically fraud to offer a service and not complete it.

As a company does not stand by what customers are told at sale or at installation. Continually tries to state reason customer is unhappy is due to something other than what they are being told. Absolutely does not know what customer service really is. Every time I called I would get someone with such a heavy accent it was difficult to understand. One person had the phone muffled and I literally could not understand/hear what she was saying. I told her this several times and yet she just continued to talk. when I call back the next day hoping to speak to someone I get another heavy accent, stating “i see on the notes you have been told…” actually no I was not told as I could not understand what was being said. Terrible service, company do not use this system!
