The Good

  • Free In-Home Consultation
  • 24/7 Professional Monitoring
  • Free Standard Installation
  • Text and Email Alerts
  • Home Automation Available

We like that AT&T offers a free in-home consultation for new customers. This helps ensure customers purchase the right service plan and equipment appropriate for their particular home. Also, AT&T’s home security systems are compatible with existing home security hardware, making it a seamless transition for customers who have existing systems. In case of a power outage, its equipment comes with a 24-hour battery backup. If you’re looking for home automation solutions, this feature is available, but will come at an additional cost.

The Bad

  • More Expensive Than The Average Home Security Provider
  • Minimum 2-Year Agreement
  • Early Cancellation Fees Starting At $640
  • Poor Customer Reviews (see customer reviews below)

AT&T’s minimum contract is a 2-year agreement starting at $39.99/mo. We have found AT&T’s monthly fees to be higher than the industry average. Also, if you’re wanting to include home automation, this will run you between $54.99-$64.99 per month.

Based on user reviews we’ve received, common customer complaints include installation issues as a result of poor installation practices by AT&T representatives, billing issues resulting in fees, high installation costs, poor customer service, and delays in having the system installed.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for home automation features along with your home security system, AT&T’s offering may meet your needs. However, you will need to sign a 2-year agreement starting at $54.99/mo. If you’re looking for an effective home security solution on a budget we recommend you look elsewhere.

Existing and past customers of AT&T’s have expressed issues related to the installation process and poor customer service. We recommend you read customer reviews below before making your final decision.

Contract and Cancellation

AT&T Digital Life requires at least a two year service agreement for new customers. Each contract will come with its own separate equipment fees and monthly charges. Customers should look over the contract prior to signing up to make sure the terms are clear and all associated fees are made known.

Since there is a two year contract, terminating the contract has its own process. If for any reason the customer cancels prior to the end of the contract, an early termination fee (ranging from $740-$840) will be charged.

Installation

AT&T Digital Life home security and automation packages require professional installation. There is no DIY option. The benefit with the AT&T Digital Life professional installation is that it does not come at an additional charge to the customer. It is considered part of the service once the first fee has been paid.

Customers will need to check availability prior to purchasing AT&T Digital Life. If the services are available in the desired state/cities, customers will need to schedule a time for the technician to come out and install the system. Homeowners will need to be present during the time of the installation.

Monitoring

All three of AT&T’s Digital Life packages come with professional monitoring which allows homeowners to monitor their own homes and families as well. Monitoring services include:

  • 24/7 monitoring – your home will always be protected regardless of the package
  • Homeowner monitoring – use a smartphone, tablet, or PC to check video footage
  • Automation monitoring– adjust thermostats and security systems

Monitoring with the automation packages include:

  • Video monitoring – view live or recorded video footage
  • Door lock status – remotely lock or unlock doors
  • Energy monitoring – conserve energy by adjusting temperature and control of appliances
  • Water detection monitoring – monitors leaks and ambient temperature

Customers will need to download the AT&T Digital Life app in order to monitor their home remotely.

Att representative sold me a “bundled” package with my cell phone, direct TV, and adding this would drop my security bill to 24.99 a month. Got my first bill 16$ for pro rate. 2nd bill 64$. Called customer service they said I wasn’t the first time caller with this issue and that I was “lied” to. Finally got a hold of a supervisor after 2hrs, said they would give me 10% off and if I wanted to take it further, write a letter. Only way to cancel pay over 500$. DON’T GET THIS SERVICE!!!! CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ITSOME WORST!!!

The worse customer service, I’ve dealt with. I have AT&T wireless and I assumed it would be the same customer service but obviously I was wrong. I am really considering cancelling my wireless account with AT&T because I feel they put me into this agreement and now to cancel I have to pay a $600 cancellation fee even though I didn’t like their service from day one.

Terrible service. Do not waste your time. I was told that if I cancelled then I have to pay for early termination fee for the equipment so there’s no need for me to return the equipment which I’m okay with but I have no idea how to uninstall the equipment myself but I was told that someone would walk me through it over the phone so just give them a call whenever I’m ready to uninstall it. When the day came that I was finally ready to uninstall it, I gave AT&T a call and they said since I cancelled it, it’s on me now. No one from they’re tech support department would be able to assist me. It’s easy to remove the cameras and the sensors, but it’s the box against the wall I need help with especially with the wiring. Way to go AT&T! I’m cancelling my phone service too. I don’t want anything to do with this type of company. Worst service ever!

On May 3, my husband called to cancel our Digital Life services. We have recently sold our home and moved in with his parents while we build a new home. During this phone call on May 3rd they told him that we needed to transer our services to the new owner of our home. So we gave the new owner of our home one week to call to sign up. We do not know the buyer of our home and have had no contact. I called Digital Life again on May 9th. The new owner of our home had not called to sign up for services. At this time, I felt like it was a privacy concern that we were controlling/ had access to her alarm system. I wanted it cancelled. I also did not want to pay for someone elses security system. The person I talked to said that my service would be cancelled in 14 days. I called again yesterday, May 23rd, 14 days later, to confirm that my services were cancelled. After being on hold for over 35 minutes I was told they were not. The new customer service representative told me that my services were not even submitted to be cancelled. After multiple transfers, and long hold times, I was asked if I wanted three months of free services (mind you I am homeless and no longer live in my house). We have to pay over $100 to cancel and I have now paid the bill twice while not living in my house thanks to their neglect.
My husband and I were planning on using Digital Life in our new home, but have completely changed our minds. After talking with two customer service representatives that were rude (one of them even said “Hello?” to get her point across in the conversation) and after being told two completely different things I will not go with Digital Life again.

Complicated to use and it just cost me >$200 to stop using their service. I never used this product once and have paid a lot of money. my fault I know, but I got convinced to buy it. then never had the time to figure it out. I could scream that it is costing me $200+ to STOP using service after paying for two years. A three year contract is unnecessary and simply a scam.

AT&T Digital Life customers service suck ass big time. They are not helpful at all, or understanding. Plus they do not keep their word. They also over price. ADT offer way better service and been around longer. Plus ADT prices are way better then suck ass AT&T Digital life. I was moving the end of April to some better apartment. In the process of moving I find out that my new apartment complex don’t allow alarm in their units. So a week before my moving I have been trying to get thing resolve with AT&T Digital Life. I have been told by a customer service representative of digital life, an AT&T representatives, and two AT&T supervisors that all I need is an official letter from the landlord stating that they do not allow alarm systems in their units and my early cancellations fee will be waived. I have done that, went to an AT&T store, show the supervisor the letter, have the supervisor called digital life and guess what digital life is not honoring what they told me over the phone. I even gave the name of the representatives of digital life who told me the information and the location the rep work at and still they are not honoring what I been told. On top of that I am seven months pregnant, may almost over, and the still billing me for a product I can not use and not using. Once I get this resolve I will not have service with AT&T for anything. I have a phone and wifi with them. Once my contact is up I will be switching to another service.

While I was on hold for over 45 minutes to try to fix an address errors made by store sales rep it gave me time to read bad reviews. Given the fact that the sales rep didn’t just make a mistake with my address but intentionally forced a version of my po box in as a street address, I decided I would just while I was ahead. Really, say your billing address is po box 111 and sales rep decides to make it look like a street address so the system will accept and enters 111 po box alley. That’s not a mistake, that’s an ATT employee who doesn’t care. If you can’t get good service at point of sale it can only go down hill from there.

I don’t actually have AT&T Digital Life yet, still shopping for a replacement system for my house. Initial impression of this product/division was poor already. For starters, when I called the phone on the email I received from AT&T Digital Life, I received an automatic message that the phone had been changed to 855-288-2727. Why shouldn’t the marketing team update important information before sending our mass advertisement.

I called the correct phone number and spoke to an agent at the call center as I was driving home. The agent was very pleasant, asked lots of questions to gauge what type of package I might need. My drive home was pretty long that day so the agent and I talked for a long, long time. At the end, I learned that I had to pay a deposit in order to get a technician to come to my house, to make a true assessment of what I needed. Because I was driving and could not access my credit card to pay for the deposit, I asked the agent to call me back once I got home. This delay worked out better because the arrangement did not sit right with me. I think the technician should come to my house to make the assessment first, then give me an estimate.

By the time I got home, I changed my mind about AT&T Digital Life. I contacted 2 other companies, including my own phone company for an in-house appointment.

I have to trust my gut feeling on this one. The agent was very pleasant.

I have had digits life for about 8 months and am selling my house. When I called to cancel I was told that I could transfer the contract to he buyers to avoid the early termination fee. I called 3 weeks ago to get that going, they took my info and nothing happened. Called again two weeks ago and was told they needed to submit a request to “the guys in the back” and they would call me back. Did that. One week ago, no callback from them even though they said it would only take two days, and no there’s no number where I can call them. Now the house has sold and the new owners are fed up with this so I’ve paid for an additional month of services I don’t need and still have to pay the early termination fee. I keep calling about this and holding and not getting to anyone who can help me. Their customer service is a BROKEN system. Do not go with these guys, there’s no easy way to get out.

The absolute worst customer service I have ever had. We all know that the words ‘customer service’ are empty when it comes to utilities, but this is definitely the worst I have ever experienced. The service was down most of the time. It’s digital, as it advertises, and they send you a weak modem, causing it not to work properly. They don’t contact you to let you know that your modem failed, and your service isn’t even working. You don’t find out until you go to your account online. Our modem had been out for five days while we were out of town, and we were never notified. The camera has a very slow response time, so the person is already past the camera before it takes a picture. After our contract was up, we were told we own the system now, so we have to have it removed, which is no simple task. It took four phone calls with average wait times of up to two hours to cancel our service. On call one, they said the authorized person on the account couldn’t cancel service regardless of being authorized. The second phone call, they argued with us late at night, as we held for two hours, and then another of arguing, as they were trying to keep our account. They finally told us it was cancelled. The next day, we saw that it hadn’t been cancelled. They said the rep didn’t enter it properly, and they once again refused to speak with the authorized person on the account. I was in the process of filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and called for their legal address for the complaint. The representative gave me the address, and in the process finally properly closed the account. Make sure if you cancel you get an e-mail confirmation for proof.

5-16-16 Don’t even think about AT&T Digital Life. It’s a joke and a purchase with them will push you to the depths of your patience.
2/10/16 I paid for the digital life system I waited a month to get it installed. They sent one person who was at my house for 9 hours on March 1, 2016 and he wasn’t able to completely finish the job. He didn’t bring all the equipment with him. The technician wanted to leave because it was after 9:00 PM but he showed me what the system was designed to do at 9:00 pm. He and I together at my computer could not make out the physical features of a single person who came to the door or walked across the front room. We even had the cameras down at chest level. The cameras were such a poor quality that even the technician who installed them had to apologize about it. I canceled the service the next day and it took weeks for them to come back to remove the cameras. They left holes in the house. They refused to reconnect my preexisting door alarms and continued to bill me 2 months after cancellation. 5-16-16 I was billed $46.26 for a monthly fee for the digital life system from AT&T. I called at 1:30 pm and at 3:10 pm the issue was still not resolved. Akita employee ID#AJ565V took the call, reviewed her records and informed me that their records indicated that they installed at my home on on Feb 10, 2016 and that it was removed on March 1st and that the account was canceled on March 8, 2016.
    this information was totally incorrect.
The True Story: The system was actually purchased on Feb 10, 2016 partially installed on March 1, On 3-2-16 I called to have the system removed. On 3-4-16 I called again to have the system removed. 3-7-16 called business department AGAIN about refunding me and to get my digital locks and 3 thermostats returned. It’s been a nightmare and a total waste of time and extreme frustration. they told me that they would not reconnect my door alarms and they would not fix the holes they drilled for the horrible cameras, and they would not give me back the thermostats they removed which were better than the ones they installed. The installer lost my front door digital lock that he removed.
3-7-16 I got disconnected after 2 hours being transferred from department to department. I called the credit card company to help expedite things.
So the security of my home was actually worse after the installer destroyed the pre-existing pre-wired door alarms .
5-16-16 I was billed $46.26 for a monthly fee for the digital life system from AT&T. I called at 1:pm and at 3:10 the issue was still not resolved with Akita employee ID#AJ565V who took the call and repeated many times, ‘Mam, I understand your frustration.’ 2:45pm. I demanded to speak with her supervisor. Her supervisor, Erica ID#ET1591 in the billing department reread through my records and indicated at 3:15pm that the issue had been resolved and the charge was now removed. Billing department: 855-288-2727 op 2.

Save yourself….. DO NOT PURCHASE AT&T DIGITAL LIFE SECURITY SYSTEM… EVER

This product is complete garbage. First we are given a 4 hour window on a Saturday and the technician literally had no idea what was going on and barely gave us a tutorial on how to work the system(Plus took countless personal calls as we sat around waiting for him to finish.) 2 and a half hours later he was done. The next day we arm the system to head to bed and because the neighbor closed “THEIR” door, (yes, we live in an apartment complex) our alarm went off because of the poorly installed front door sensor. after finally getting the alarm to shut off we were never contacted by AT&T to verify we were ok or to call the police. It is now almost 4pm the following day and STILL HAVENT HEARD FROM THEM. Needless to say we are cancelling this s***ty service ASAP. Save yourselves the stress and hassle.

The customer service for this company is the absolute worst I have ever dealt with. They are completely inept and have zero knowledge of the product – I’m not even sure they know what a security system is or who they work for. I can imagine all of them sitting around answering that box that rings and pushing the pretty flashy buttons – absolute idiots!!! I literally spent thirty minutes trying to explain to some moron that I sold my house and the new buyers wanted to turn the system on. The majority of that call was spent explaining that I no longer lived in that house as in sold it and moved to another state…such a simple concept but they just couldn’t understand. This was just one of many issues I had with this company. I would rather higher a toddler with a nerf gun to protect my house over these so called “experts”.

Switched to Digital Life from Alarms.com because of problems with the alarm provider who serviced alarms.com in my area. So far ATT has been great. The install was quick and easy, the technician did a clean install with no issues. The system is easy to use and has yet to have any issues. I bug tech support alot to self install sensors and other devices i purchase from eBay. (Alot cheaper then purchasing from att) they have been very knowledgeable about the system and have helped me add 10 additional devices. The contract terms are WAY better then traditional alarm companies, who have sneaky wording and terms to keep you locked in contract forever! 2 years is more then fair in my opinion with the equipment you are getting! Monthly price is higher then Alarms.com but the equipment and service is light years better…. And you don’t have to sell your first born child to get out of the contract.
