Pros

Multiple Equipment Packages

Moni Smart Security offers great smart home technology and equipment for both home security and home automation. There are three equipment plans for customers to choose from Basic, HomeTouch, and HomeTouch Premier. Each of the three plans includes basic system components, such as alarm monitoring services, a control panel, motion sensors, window sensors, and door sensors. The two higher plans provide extra features such as security cameras, remote system control, and text alerts. Other smart home technologies and alarm monitoring equipment, such as video doorbell security cameras, are also available. A mobile app for iPhone and Android users that acts as a remote control panel with many features. Users can access their Skybell HD camera and utilize the two-way voice feature. With multiple plans available to them, customers have the ability to find an option that best meets their home security needs and budget.

Low Upfront Costs

Moni Smart Security will provide its customers with free equipment and installation (minus a few exceptions), keeping upfront costs low and affordable. However, there are some fees to be aware of—more on those below.

False Alarm Protection

False alarms aren’t incredibly common, but they do happen. Moni Smart Security offers a number of protection features to help customers in the event of a false alarm. For example, the company will cover up to two false alarms each year. Additionally, Moni Smart Security will reimburse customers up to $50 for each false alarm. Few home security companies offer any type of false alarm protection, making Moni Smart Security unique in this regard.

Flexible Moving Options

Moni Smart Security offers free moving services to customers who have had a security system for at least a year and are up to date on their monthly payments. This offer comes with the option to extend the terms of the contract at the current rate for up to 24 months. If the customer is not interested in moving the system to their new home, Moni Smart Security will allow them to transfer the contract to their homebuyer or pay off the remaining balance.

Cons

Long-Term Contracts

All Moni Smart Security plans require that customers sign into a binding three to five-year contract for alarm monitoring services. While three years is the average contract length in the home security industry, there are some companies that offer a shorter contract length or do not require customers to sign an annual contract at all.

Higher Monthly Rates and Activation Fees

Although Moni Smart Security offers free equipment and installations, the company’s monthly alarm monitoring rates are quite a bit higher than those of other top-rated security system providers. For example, Moni Smart Security monitoring service prices start at $34.95 per month and only go up from there. In addition to steep monthly rates, the company also charges a sizable activation fee, which, depending on the package, can set customers back up to $149. Customer satisfaction reviews have suffered as a result.

Possible Rate Increases

The monthly rates advertised by Moni Smart Security are based on a 36 to 60-month monitoring agreement. However, actual rates could increase after 12 months, leaving customers locked into a contract and paying a higher rate than they were expecting.

Our Recommendation

Moni Smart Security has over two decades of experience in the home security industry. The company offers multiple equipment packages, flexible moving options, and false alarm protection. Moni Smart Security advertises free equipment and installations, but charges steep activation fees and requires its customers to sign into lengthy contracts with high monthly monitoring rates. Consumers who are considering Moni Smart Security should also be aware that the company reserves the right to increase rates after the first 12 months. See all Moni Smart Security reviews below.

When you cancel with Monitronics you have to jump through hoops. When you do everything they ask which is send a letter telling why you canceled then they still bill you for another thirty days. My contract was up years ago. I do not recommend them.

I live in Mesa, AZ. We switched from ADT to Monitronics because our representative Jason Taylor convinced us that not only were they cheaper, but that they had a better system and that they would reimburse us for any costs incurred from ADT for switching. He has yet to give us one cent back so we have been paying both companies for services for 6 months now and I don’t think anyone even monitors it! I’m calling my bank to stop payments and I hope they take me to court! I only wish I’d have seen all of these reviews when I had searched them before signing but this site didn’t come up. Lesson learned!

It took more than 2 months and more than 6 visits to install a few security cameras. Within a few weeks, two cameras malfunctioned. Rainwater got into an outdoor camera and stayed in the camera for more than two weeks. The indoor camera’s night vision did not work. Called and had the indoor camera replaced. The technician could only replace the indoor camera, but could not do anything about the outdoor one because he or his company did not install that particular camera.

So I had to call Monitronics again. I was first told there was no warranty and they count not do anything about it. Then they changed their story and said since it had been two months there was no warranty, but they could send someone in and I had to pay for it. Again, after I voiced my concern, they said they could replace it but I had to pay $50.

I asked if they had any warranty on their equipment. They could not give me a clear answer.

I told them, “I am done with you guys once the contract is due. You have terribly bad services.”

I contacted Monitronics to cancel my home security service, my reason was simply that after being a customer since 2009 I have found I can get better service for a locked price of $19.99 for a 36 month period.

In speaking with their representative Sherry (not sure if the spelling is correct) she first offered me a rate of $38.00 ($3.00) off my current monthly rate and I informed her that wasn’t enough of a discount to warrant me to stay, she then offered to take it down to $35.00 a month, to which I again informed her this was not even close to the offer from a competitor. She then offered a $32.00 monthly rate for 5 months and then said the rate could go lower after 5 months and told me I would only be locked into this rate for 18 months as opposed to 36 months with the other company. I’m not sure who taught her math, but since I would require a home security service beyond 18 months, even if she locked in $32.00 a month beyond the 18 months she offered, $19.99 a month for 36 months is considerably less.
I also informed her the other company offered up to 12 window sensors which she informed me Monitronics would do as well, but only at a discounted rate.

After a longer than expected “hard sell” to keep my business she ended up making me angry that I was even calling. I was told at the time that I have to cancel in writing, which I was fully prepared to do, but I will receive one last pro-rated bill within 30 days.

Awesome. If your company offered to provide home security to me for free for 36 months I would not even consider it.

I agree with the comments below. I wouldn’t recommend Monitornics to no one. They persuaded me to add security cameras without informing me that if I had a cable problem the cameras would go offline. Once the cameras went offline Monitronics said it was my responsibility to hire a contractor to come in and get the cameras back on line, which would cost between $100-$200. I am now stuck in a 40 month contract that cost $1700 to break. I feel like Monitonics manipulated me into purchasing these security cameras to increase my monthly fee and lock me into a contract. Don’t let this happen to you.

Equipment constantly fails have to replace batteries every month which is really expensive. Instant photos are not instant they can and have between a 10 to 45 second delay. This gives thieves plenty of time to get out of camera range . All in all a horrible system to have installed if monitronic contacts you yell no and run

I have found Monitronics to be frustrating to work with. After the completion of my 36 month contract I telephoned to cancel my subscription. I was informed that I had to write to a PO Box address that could only be obtained by telephone. The address is not available online, although Monitronics has an online payment system. One can only assume this is so Monitronics can have the mose convenient method of receiving my money rather than improving my experience.

Then I found out that my subscription would only be terminated 30 days after the receipt of my letter. Nice way to bilk the customer of another month’s payment.

Also, after providing the required information confirming my identity, I was never thanked by them. Just a simple thank you would have made the experience more like being treated as a valuable customer and less like someone who was suspect.

    So frustrating.

My dad was conned into buying this system. The told him his last security system was outdated and NEEDED to be replaced. I should add that the system he already had was just paid off after 5 years! The rate went up and was different than what he was told, so he called back in April to cancel and to come pick up the system. Noboby ever did. This company continued their monthly withdrawals as well. My dad continued to call several times. He left messages and nobody would call him back. Finally in August he was able to actually talk to someone and he told them again to cancel the account. Well the company SafePay continues to withdrawal monthly payments to this day. So he called Monotronics back and they confirmed his account was closed in August. They gave him the number to call for SafeNet to stop the withdrawals. He argued that Monotronics should be the one to verify with SafePay or SafeNet to stop, but they said no. So he calls SafeNet using the number given to him by Monotronics. SafeNet said they were different than SafePay and asked for his bank account information. Of course we did not provide it. When I asked why they needed it, I was told that was how they monitor their accounts. I say BS and refused to give the information. The CS agent abruptly ended the call. We call Monotronics back to get SafePay phone number and just get the run around one again. They tell us they cant even locate his Monotronics account number because it was closed nor provide either SafePay account number or phone number or SafeNet account number to resolve this problem. Terrible customer service, overpriced products and services and take advantage of elderly people.

When it was installed the first year it was fine. We started having issues after that every month. It gets to be iritating to call every month to get it fixed. Our cops dont show up anyway when the alarm goes off. When we tried to cancel i was on hold for quite sometime then actually talked to a person then put back on hold forever again. Person came back and said write a letter so i did. Wasnt very nice. Im expecting more issues.

My mom had this service in Colorado and had left in July. I had first called in August and was told to write a letter, which I did. They sent me a letter saying they could not find the account, I called and the CS said they could not find the person who wrote the letter. After calling back three different times, the last CS person was able to find the person who sent me the letter. The only thing that happen was me writing a review prior to this one in which the manager said he would stop the direct payments from coming out and would credit us back. As of today, they are still pulling the payments out, but state that this account is not active and payments will stop as of today. Am currently on the phone now holding to get this straighten once again. Terrible company. .

Signed up for Pinnacle in Oct. 2012. Was told i would only pay 35 a month for 3 years. Only reason I even agreed. Was supposed to get live feed outdoor cameras and never did. 2 months after signing they sold my contract to monotronics who then raised my monthly to 55. I fought with them and got it to 44. 26 months later ive had enough. Brother in law set off alarm and they called house and he just said he was my wifes brother and that was good enough for monotronics.. State troopers called 1 day later and asked if i had break in. Cameras took pictures and you cant even tell who it is. They are charging a fortune for something you can buy on amazon for $250 and only pay $11-$15 a month yourself. Huge scam. I canceled my contract today by paying 55% of my remaing months which somehow increased to 58( should have read my contract closer) $803 total. at first they said i couldnt until i told them contract was in my hand and icould indeed terminate. Even atnthe end guy tryed charging me for 34 months after telling me i only had 33 left to go.Sleazy people. After i paid I called credit card company and blocked any further transactions from them and had them document that i had terminated with them. So now if they continue to try and charge credit card company will be doing the dispute against them. Stay away from these guys. I ended up buying game trail cams, driveway alarms and a 8channel security camera system with nvr which i backup in real time offsite. Hope this helps someone

I have never been so disgusted with a company as I am with Monitronics. Their blithe disregard for their consumers is insulting and patronizing. I began a contract with them after my house was burglarized 2 years ago. A year later, I accepted a job in another town, and had to move. The new tenant in the rental house did not want the alarm system. The landlord did not want it in any of his other houses. I couldn’t move it to my new house because the new landlord didn’t want the system installed. Now I am stuck paying for a system that is no longer in use. As a single parent supporting two children on my own, every penny counts. There was no consideration for my circumstances. Simply “pay the remaining amount”. I can’t come up with the remainder of the contract. I can’t easily cancel it because the account is in the landlord’s name, while the payments come from my bank account, and I am now in another city. Customer service representatives from the company are snarky and rude.

There is nothing positive about this comapny whatsoever.

We are stuck in a contract until 2016. Paying monthly for the hole in our wall that holds useless equipment that has never worked. An improper original install in our garage caused excessive calls in error and local authorities became upset so we turned of the system. It has not been back on since. Nobody came to fix it, though company technicians noted that they had – their office was in another city – and have since gone under. Monitronics worked with this unethical company and took on our contract when the other business failed. We were never informed. We tried to cancel and they refused – so we are in a 5 year contract, paying monthly for service that has never worked. Customer service has been horrible. My husband can not even talk to them anymore as it is so frustrating and I have talked to them, but I am not the one that signed the contract. They just do not care. We will research our next security company as we did not really have a choice when we got stuck with Monitronics. It seems that we should be able to get out of the contract as the service has not been on for years now but they have been inflexible. Stay away from monitronics.
