Pros

Multiple Equipment Packages

Moni Smart Security offers great smart home technology and equipment for both home security and home automation. There are three equipment plans for customers to choose from Basic, HomeTouch, and HomeTouch Premier. Each of the three plans includes basic system components, such as alarm monitoring services, a control panel, motion sensors, window sensors, and door sensors. The two higher plans provide extra features such as security cameras, remote system control, and text alerts. Other smart home technologies and alarm monitoring equipment, such as video doorbell security cameras, are also available. A mobile app for iPhone and Android users that acts as a remote control panel with many features. Users can access their Skybell HD camera and utilize the two-way voice feature. With multiple plans available to them, customers have the ability to find an option that best meets their home security needs and budget.

Low Upfront Costs

Moni Smart Security will provide its customers with free equipment and installation (minus a few exceptions), keeping upfront costs low and affordable. However, there are some fees to be aware of—more on those below.

False Alarm Protection

False alarms aren’t incredibly common, but they do happen. Moni Smart Security offers a number of protection features to help customers in the event of a false alarm. For example, the company will cover up to two false alarms each year. Additionally, Moni Smart Security will reimburse customers up to $50 for each false alarm. Few home security companies offer any type of false alarm protection, making Moni Smart Security unique in this regard.

Flexible Moving Options

Moni Smart Security offers free moving services to customers who have had a security system for at least a year and are up to date on their monthly payments. This offer comes with the option to extend the terms of the contract at the current rate for up to 24 months. If the customer is not interested in moving the system to their new home, Moni Smart Security will allow them to transfer the contract to their homebuyer or pay off the remaining balance.

Cons

Long-Term Contracts

All Moni Smart Security plans require that customers sign into a binding three to five-year contract for alarm monitoring services. While three years is the average contract length in the home security industry, there are some companies that offer a shorter contract length or do not require customers to sign an annual contract at all.

Higher Monthly Rates and Activation Fees

Although Moni Smart Security offers free equipment and installations, the company’s monthly alarm monitoring rates are quite a bit higher than those of other top-rated security system providers. For example, Moni Smart Security monitoring service prices start at $34.95 per month and only go up from there. In addition to steep monthly rates, the company also charges a sizable activation fee, which, depending on the package, can set customers back up to $149. Customer satisfaction reviews have suffered as a result.

Possible Rate Increases

The monthly rates advertised by Moni Smart Security are based on a 36 to 60-month monitoring agreement. However, actual rates could increase after 12 months, leaving customers locked into a contract and paying a higher rate than they were expecting.

Our Recommendation

Moni Smart Security has over two decades of experience in the home security industry. The company offers multiple equipment packages, flexible moving options, and false alarm protection. Moni Smart Security advertises free equipment and installations, but charges steep activation fees and requires its customers to sign into lengthy contracts with high monthly monitoring rates. Consumers who are considering Moni Smart Security should also be aware that the company reserves the right to increase rates after the first 12 months. See all Moni Smart Security reviews below.

Never in my life have I used such an awful company. Started out as Security Networks in a three year contract, and when they became Monitronics, somehow it became a five year contract. I faxed (and mailed) a letter saying I wanted to cancel, since that was what was requested. But they “never got it”, or at least that is what Monitronics is saying. :-/ Monitronics began calling my cell, then my IN LAWS, and then my PARENTS!! Seriously??? Not to mention that everyone I have spoken to (especially Rita) has been so incredibly rude. I would never talk to a person the way they talked to me. Now they have turned my account over to collections, and the collections company is calling saying that they are going to report my refusal to pay $300 to the credit reporting bureaus. It’s ridiculous, especially seeing as I didn’t even have service for several months prior to SN becoming Monitronics. There was a large gap in our service, and at one point our panel was buzzing. We find out (a week later) that our home wasn’t even being monitored, and that this had been going on for quite a while, as in a few months! Good grief! These people need to get it together!

Tried cancelling my service twice now and still no luck…still being charged monthly. Not only that, I haven’t been at the property in 2 years due to active duty military deployment to Afghanistan. Still charged me. I was originally a customer of Pinnacle Security. They were bought about by Monitronics (or so I was told since I never received any notice). When asked about this, it was stated they didn’t have to notify the customers, but that I was now under contract with Monitronics. Please, please, please, if you are looking for an alarm/security company, do NOT use Monitronics.

I haven’t tried to cancel as such so I’m not sure how current the complaints are, but I haven’t really had any issues with them. The web site isn’t great and it’s hard to find pricing for add-ons, but response has been good.

Trying to cancel your service is a nightmare!! I called customer service and asked them to cancel my service because I had just sold my house. The cancellation date I requested was the last day of my 39-month contract. I had to fax in writing why I wanted to cancel my service to a non-toll free number, which was busy the first day I tried to cancel. I clearly stated my requested cancellation date in the fax. After I cancelled, I heard nothing until I got a bill for an extra month of service. When I called, they said that it took 30 days from receipt of my fax for a cancellation. No one told me this when I asked to cancel my service. They threatened to send the bill to collection if I didn’t pay them. I sent a check that day. Today I received another bill with a late fee attached. They had already cashed my check for the payoff of my service. When I called them today, they said it was a good thing I called because they were just about to send me to collections over $3.00. Do not use this company – they treat you like a criminal if you try to prevent them from extorting more money from you.

WORST COMPANY EVER. Pushy rude salespeople and when your contract is over, they push to squeeze more money out our you by claiming that it goes automatic month to month unless you cancel it in writing. EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A CONTRACT EXPIRATION DATE. They are trying to get money out of me for a house I no longer own and a contract that was paid in full through the expiration date. I called to firm everything up before it expired and nobody said a word about putting it in writing (since then, there is conveniently no phone call recorded in their files). I was told yesterday they were cancelling the account since I sent them a note, but that I still owe the money. I don’t owe it and will not pay it. Today I received a voice mail that the alarm went off. I called and explained that I am in no way connected with that property and no longer have an account with monitronics and was told to call back tomorrow because she didn’t know how to handle this. I HATE this company and want them to go away.

Monitronics is a horrible company. Customer service is actually not a service, no one can help you. They stop our service but continue to bill us every month. Look for another security company, this one is NOT WORTH IT.

Worst customer service attitude you’ll eve meet! I’ve screamed over the phone and asked the supervisor to call, no such luck, they do not return calls. Even though their equipment which I asked to buy keeps throwing error codes up and beeping at all hours of the day or night.

Everything was fine until I wanted to cancel my account, then all politeness and kindness stopped. They only allow you to cancel by mail and will continue to bill until a letter is received. There is no local business where this can be done; it can only be done by their office in Texas!

I’m tired of communicating with this company. I wrote a complaint in another online forum. I assumed from the reply I received from John in customer service that it was resolved. WRONG. Now I’m receiving bills in the mail for the same equipment charges. My signed 42 month contract with Pinnacle Alarm began in July 2011 and ends in January 2015. I do not have a SIGNED contract with Monitronics therefore it is not legal. These equipment charges were covered in my original contract. STOP harassing me.

I have a Monotronic’s system that keeps losing communication and the alarm goes off at all hours of the night.
After spending 15 minutes waiting for someone to answer, we went through the whole rebooting process and they said that the system is fine. Since that time the alarm lost communication another 4 times and the last was at 6am this morning.
Called in again after I was awakened and waited another 15 minutes for a representative. We rebooted the alarm again and then set it off and they have no communication with my system, system is not working. They told me there is a $50 charge and a repairman can come out in 11 days, I told them that was not acceptable and I wanted to speak with a supervisor.
At that point we got disconnected and when they called back, they said that the supervisor was busy and would return my call.
That has never happened and I am furious with no protection.

    We are exhausted.

My mother no longer lives in her home, health/ dementia issues. I started calling Monitronics to cancel services for my mom over 9 months ago. I have clocked over 9 hours of phone time to try and cancel her account.
Monotronics continues to bill for monthly fees for a woman who doesn’t even live in the home anymore. They refuse to cancel the account, and in fact are adding to the monthly fees even though representatives say ” it’s all taken care of!” however, the bills still come and continue to accumulate a huge balance. They then say they have “adjusted the account down to $100 from the $350 they say is due, and will not cancel the account until this is paid.” Billing is still generated, and accumulating each month. Really Monotronics?

We even mailed in and faxed notarized documents that my mother has dementia, no longer stays in the home, has not used the system in over a year, but the withdrawals from her checking account of $36 a months continued. (Until we went to bank to block their withdrawals.)

They call my house 2 times a day wanting money. Our mom will pick up the phone and they talk to her, she gets very upset, and I try to explain to her I am trying to fix this.

It feels like abuse at this point, making my mom sicker with the endless calls.
It seems like fraud, trying to bilk money from the elderly when services have not been provided for over a year!
Monitronics has received over 5 months of fees for no services provided, and we will not pay them one more cent.
Shame on them! It should not take an ulcer to remove a service like this when no longer provided.

We need some assist with this, our next move will be to contact the BBB for assistance with this gross negligent billing practice of Monotronics.

My sister and I are exhausted trying to resolve this issue over the phone with staff who refuse to fix this issue for my mother.

Shame on Monitonics for such tactics to scam money from eldery clients who need to cancel services when their health issues change/decline.

I hope this review will be taken into consideration when customers are trying to choose a home protection plan for their families.

    Thank you.

Monitronics billing process is poor. They only offered electronic billing and they were not consistent about when they deducted from your account. Attempting to reach someone in customer service concerning your bill, a false alarm or repairs was very difficult. They will almost never send someone out to repair any equipment. They mail it and expect you to install or repair.

My equipment became faulty due to there no longer being 2G towers in the area. I called Monitronics and had a service call scheduled. I paid $199 for new wall unit that worked with 3G and at that time unannounced to me with no written agreement they locked me into a several year contract that doesn’t end until 04/05/2017 and upped my price from $40 a month to $46 a month. I no longer live in the house and they refuse to cancel my service unless I pay the remaining amount on my contract. This is all due to their equipment being outdated and no longer working. Prior to the equipment being installed I was not under a contract. I was a good standing customer for over 3 years and now they refuse to cancel my service and by the looks of it this will all need to be resolved in court. DON’T USE THIS COMPANY for your home security service.

    Sincerely,
    Customer# 600209258

    Their customer support is terrible.
I moved from Texas to Ohio. Made at least 7 calls to their customer service dept to cancel. Everytime, there would be long hold, I will be transferred to multiple people to whom I have to explain the same. They’d say someone will call me to walk me thru the cancellation, but will NEVER call back.

With so many agencies to deal with for the move, calling one company so many times and still not able to cancel, is horrible. They make the cancellation process extremely hard.

They’d also charge you a huge amount for cancellation even if you had to move out of state to another state.

Trouble, trouble. There have been problems with the phone app- it disconnects and then beeps at our house to “warn” us. The phone app is really glitchy- sometimes it arms, sometimes it doesn’t. There have been times I used the fob to arm and came home to find it didn’t work- most likely me not pressing the button correctly… but there’s no way to know if your house is really armed or not. And to top it all off, the alarm is only loud inside the house, and we can’t even hear it upstairs. My husband once set the alarm off on his way out the front door and didn’t even know it, because he couldn’t hear it from the front yard. And now they keep machine-calling me and hanging up, like 5 times a day. When I call back, no one answers. A machine says the system isn’t working or something. NOT HAPPY with this company or system.

Horrible customer service! Closed my account and went with another company, sent them a letter indicating service was changed on the 28th of the month. When, after several phone calls, I reached the advocate he said I would continue to be charged until the 4th of the following month. I was not as aggravated by the money as I was the principal of what was done. I paid up front for service and equipment, I was with them for 3 years. I plan to provide negative advertising about the company free of charge!

I have been trying to cancel monitronics for 4 years!!!!!
I signed up when I lived in the city for a house I was renting. that was in 2008!
the guy that signed up said it was a month to month contract.
I called when we left that house in 2010, they told me I had a 5 year contract and I had to pay them some $3,800!!!
I tried and tried, they would not stop charging me. I have called and asked to cancel many many times.
Finally after paying them for 4 years of service I didn’t use!! and ask even after my supposed 5 year contract was up! I stopped payment from my bank account! Now they are telling me they will send my amount past do to collections!!! THEY OWE ME $2,400!!!!
DO NOT TRUST THESE GUYS, THEY ARE LIARS!!!
