After being a loyal customer for over four years, I was the unfortunate recipient of a $430 plus final payment charge. Their service left much to be desired as they were quite slow to respond and failed to call myself (the primary) on the account when the fire alarm or other issues caused an alarm engagement. I was surprised several times when the fire truck arrived. As far as the charge, I had signed a contract that stated I must keep the account engaged for five years otherwise I would need to pay the remaining months which frankly is ridiculous. Most companies will have a small monthly fee for those remaining in a contract rather than the entire amount. I was not informed that this was in fact the case until the monthly amount was withdrawn again for the month after I had moved even though I had called several times trying to make sure there were no issues with my cancellation. I say RUN do not use this company regardless of what they call themselves Moni or BRINKS.Read More

They will squeeze every dime and no compassion at all. My husband has had a serious decline in his health requested to drop contract after two years and it will cost in the thousands to do so. If you sell the house and new home owner does not want the system you will pay a pretty penny to cancel service. So if you are a senior or some one whos health is not the best this system and contract will eat up your saving to get out of the contract. Nursing homes does not need a unit to follow you and if you move with your kids they do not want your system you are still paying. Veterans the same goes for you . So please consider your health when signing a contract unless you have over a thousands to buy out contract you will have a new debt. And for some reason Brink is now our provider I did not sign a contract with them so them moral of this story they can sell your contract with no notice or option to cancel. The salesman's promise the moon and how he would stay in touch NEVER heard for him again. Just food for thought if you go with this companyRead More

The Good

  • Multiple equipment packages
  • Low upfront costs
  • False alarm protection
  • Flexible moving options
Multiple Equipment Packages

Moni Smart Security offers great smart home technology and equipment for both home security and home automation. There are three equipment plans for customers to choose from Basic, HomeTouch, and HomeTouch Premier. Each of the three plans includes basic system components, such as alarm monitoring services, a control panel, motion sensors, window sensors, and door sensors. The two higher plans provide extra features such as security cameras, remote system control, and text alerts. Other smart home technologies and alarm monitoring equipment, such as video doorbell security cameras, are also available. A mobile app for iPhone and Android users that acts as a remote control panel with many features. Users can access their Skybell HD camera and utilize the two-way voice feature. With multiple plans available to them, customers have the ability to find an option that best meets their home security needs and budget.

Low Upfront Costs

Moni Smart Security will provide its customers with free equipment and installation (minus a few exceptions), keeping upfront costs low and affordable. However, there are some fees to be aware of—more on those below.

False Alarm Protection

False alarms aren’t incredibly common, but they do happen. Moni Smart Security offers a number of protection features to help customers in the event of a false alarm. For example, the company will cover up to two false alarms each year. Additionally, Moni Smart Security will reimburse customers up to $50 for each false alarm. Few home security companies offer any type of false alarm protection, making Moni Smart Security unique in this regard.

Flexible Moving Options

Moni Smart Security offers free moving services to customers who have had a security system for at least a year and are up to date on their monthly payments. This offer comes with the option to extend the terms of the contract at the current rate for up to 24 months. If the customer is not interested in moving the system to their new home, Moni Smart Security will allow them to transfer the contract to their homebuyer or pay off the remaining balance.

The Bad

  • Long-term contracts
  • High monthly rates and activation fees
  • Possible rate increases
Long-Term Contracts

All Moni Smart Security plans require that customers sign into a binding three to five-year contract for alarm monitoring services. While three years is the average contract length in the home security industry, there are some companies that offer a shorter contract length or do not require customers to sign an annual contract at all.

Higher Monthly Rates and Activation Fees

Although Moni Smart Security offers free equipment and installations, the company’s monthly alarm monitoring rates are quite a bit higher than those of other top-rated security system providers. For example, Moni Smart Security monitoring service prices start at $34.95 per month and only go up from there. In addition to steep monthly rates, the company also charges a sizable activation fee, which, depending on the package, can set customers back up to $149. Customer satisfaction reviews have suffered as a result.

Possible Rate Increases

The monthly rates advertised by Moni Smart Security are based on a 36 to 60-month monitoring agreement. However, actual rates could increase after 12 months, leaving customers locked into a contract and paying a higher rate than they were expecting.

The Bottom Line

Moni Smart Security has over two decades of experience in the home security industry. The company offers multiple equipment packages, flexible moving options, and false alarm protection. Moni Smart Security advertises free equipment and installations, but charges steep activation fees and requires its customers to sign into lengthy contracts with high monthly monitoring rates. Consumers who are considering Moni Smart Security should also be aware that the company reserves the right to increase rates after the first 12 months. See all Moni Smart Security reviews below.

MONI Smart Security (formerly Monitronics) received the highest numerical score among 6 brands in the J.D. Power 2016 Home Security Satisfaction Report, based on 2,282 total responses, measuring the opinions of customers who purchased a home security system in the previous 12 months, surveyed August-September 2016. Your experiences may vary.

We are demolishing our house and rebuilding. I have tried for a week to cancel this service. Their strategy is to put customers wanting to cancel service on permanent hold until you give up. On my last call I finally was taken off hold to be told they need to send an email that will “arrive within 72 hours” that I need to sign and send back within 24 hours. They send me junk mail weekly, but they claim they don’t have my email on file. I gave it to them to get the cancellation email. It’s been a few days, no email yet, I’m sure I’ll have to call back and go through this cycle again. Such a brilliant business move, get people on Autopay and make it next to impossible to cancel, free money! I would recommend to avoid using this company.

Absolutely horrible. Equipment doesn’t work. Equipment they install and give you after you pay a hefty fee. Then when the equipment breaks, they make you pay hefty fees to have it fixed. All while sticking you with a lengthy contract of high monthly dues. Avoid them at all costs.

still waiting after one week of calling and requesting moving to the new location.

have been told on each and every call that someone will be in touch within 24-48 hrs

and it has been over 8 days from the first call.

it seems like it has become my daily routine to call them and be on hold for over 30 minutes and then get the same answer.

We have been a long term Monotronics customer. In September of last year we moved and carried Monotronics to the new home. The house windows were hard wired and there are 15 windows and three doors. The technician was told at the time of service that all of the windows were going to be replaced in November and the hard wiring would no longer be in place. He proceeded to connect 10 of 15 windows and two of three doors. He advised me that if I contacted him privately, he would give me a good price for the private installation of the non alarmed 5 windows and sliding glass door. I contacted Moni in December and relayed the issue to them. They failed to contact me although their records indicate that they quoted me a price of nearly $500 to appropriately alarm the house. I have been paying nearly $60 per month for two alarmed doors and zero windows. Their only resolution was to quote me a price of 19.95 per window and the door. They also claim to have no responsibility for the technicians “shady offer”. I wanted out of the contract for lack of service and their offer is for me to pay off the balance of the contract. For all of their advertising and bravado, MONI sucks outright and should change their name to MONEY because all they seem interested in doing is offering no viable resolution to problems without dipping into your wallet for more MONEY. I would strongly advise against doing business with this rip-off service. They also offer no updates to the system or contact about updates. It would seem that when they changed their name they also eliminated all appearances of customer service (which was never wonderful)

Buyer beware, a contract is a contract is a contract with Moni, no exceptions! We sold a home with a contract in place & the new buyer agreed to take over, so we set up new service at our new home. Paid $700 installation on the new home, 4 year contract. Later learned that the buyer for the old home went with another provider due to better pricing, so we were stuck paying out the old contract. They didn’t care that we had set up the quite expensive new contract, nor that we had been customers at multiple homes for many years with their organization. They don’t care about customer loyalty. You have a contract, you pay it out, period. Completely inflexible and not customer friendly. Plus expect to stay on hold for long periods every time you call them. Will never use them again.

I have been with them for five years. I am no longer under contract. Called to cancel service 7/7/17 and was treated terrible. First person I talked to told me I had to sign a form that would take me 24-48 hours to receive. Told me I owed a back bill, when I objected she transferred me back to customer service, after being put on hold several times with long waits I talked to another manager who said he would send an email right away. It is now 7/10/17 never received the email. Also the first manager said it would take 30 days to be officially cancelled. When I tried to contact Ceo office it sent me right back to customer service. This company does not deserve the rating that you have given them

Their salesman approached me when I was reeling from the death of my husband. He preyed on my fears and, to my shame, I signed without fully reading a contract with such fine print you have to use a magnifying glass to read it. Now, I am a widow on severly limited funds asking them to please allow me out of the contract. They have no mercy in their souls and I am desperate to be released. Paying the balance of the contract is not within my means. DO NOT sign with these people.

Attempted to cancel for four months, they said they sent an email with documents we needed to return, but the email wasn’t send for four months, we searched junk mail, etc etc. After being faithful customers for 4 years, they would never acknowledge fault or any mistakes. Employees were rude and argumentative every time we called. Will never recommend them and will never pay them.

By far the worst business I have ever dealt with. They took money out of my bank account after my cancelation and after a month and speaking with 7 different supervisors. I still have not had my money returned, apparently this is very common with moni therefore I will not be recommending there service to anyone.
Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had with any company.

Horrible Company! I do not recommend this to anyone!!! All this company does it take money from you and does not even give you what you pay for. Our batteries and our whole system for security stopped working and I had to search for 3 hours to find the customer service phone number for this company. After I got a hold of this company I told them I want to cancel this service, but they would not let me do that, and to this day I still get bills to pay for their service. I would never recommend this kind of service for anyone. Find a better company!

Not only does this company charge more than others, when it comes time to cancel, even after your contract has expired, they require a 30 day notice before cancellation is effective. They also required a return email to initiate cancellation. I had to call 3 times before they sent the email to me to reply to, adding 3 weeks to the final billing.

A horrible company. We had a contract for their service, then moved two suites down. The dealer “Systems Alert Atlanta”, they forced us to use, created a broken system and would charge more an more each time he visited. He refused to use any existing equipment from our old suite, and left us hanging in a high-crime area. When contacting Moni to fix, We are told they can only send the same person out. When asked to cancel, they refuse. Buyer BEWARE.

They are giving me the run around about cancelling my service. I’ve gone beyond the 3 yr. contract and have asked to cancel. They said they’d send an email. Never got the email. I sent an email to them stating a second request to cancel and stop billing me 60.00.

I get an email stating they’ll send me an email to fill out and then it will take another 30 days to cancel.

    This is BS!!
It will take an act of God or calling my bank and having them stop the autodraft of 60.00 a month.

My Contract was up and paid in FULL October 28th, 2016. I am receiving threatening calls from a collection agency saying that I owe 360.00. I called September 2016 and told them I was not going to be in business at that address and would make last payment in October and end service on contract date. Now they say that is was on a month to month BUT only long enough to gain 360.00. Total CRAP. They got paid for 3 full years and now they want to tack on another 360.00 in charges after Contract was filled. Sent to collections with a aggressive and nasty collection agency. They are liars and thieves. They have many negative reviews on line for the same thing. They make a lot of extra money screwing people after their contract ends. They need to be put out of business for being thieves.

My biggest problem I ran into with this company is trying to get a tech out within a month. They did not fix my problem the first couple of times. Then finally when my camera quit, I couldn’t get anyone out soon enough, and when someone did come by, they were pretty unprofessional and told me I had to pay for a new camera. I spoke to the managers, supervisors ect. they only wanted me to sign additional months contract to get a working camera without having to pay out of pocket any money. Ive since then have had several problems with this company. I paid an outrageous amount to get started and high monthly payment for years. Once I finished my contract, they told me I could get my payment cut in half or even more. I absolutely would run form this company.

I purchased a home in Las Vegas with a Monitronics system and continued the service. BIG MISTAKE> Average service at best. Sold the house and new owner took over the service. Moved to Tampa and they billed me for a system that never existed. Moved to Melbourne and they continue to charge me for nothing. Just got a bill for $200! I have written to them, called them, Mastercard has refunded the charges, and they do not stop. Just called again and put on hold for 20 minutes. I have read the reviews here and elsewhere and it is blatant customer disservice. DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO THE PATHETIC SECURITY COMPANY.

My mother went to the hospital and to a nursing home and hasn’t been home for over 3 months and I have called and emailed everything they wanted to cancel and they deny receiving it even though I have proof of email. And every time I talk to them they needs something else from me rather than explaining what I need at once. They wan the secret code, but don’t seem to understand that my mother hand a stroke and doesn’t know her code. They keep billing me and they leave her messages at the Nursing home. They are despicable and I’m ready to hire an attorney.

So I have been with moni for about two years. I bought my house and sure enough with in the first week or so they stopped by. Great sales team but left out some key details to the contract.
It’s been two years and I am paying the highest possible price for an alarm that in my opinion is junk. A few door sensors that are stuck on to the door with double sided tape. It’s a joke and I recommend saying thousands of dollars and buying a different service.
I have tons of false alarms due to it unsticking. I am trying to get out of the dumb mistake but they want you to pay your full contract to cancel. What’s the point of that. Instead what I will do is take pictures of their quality products and post them on reviews and social media.

We were mislead into a 5 year contract we cannot cancel. In order to cancel you have to pay off every single month left, for no service, and at the latest increase in monthly rate. BTW, the highest rate listed on this page says $54.99 but it just increased to 61.02. When I called about it, they can’t do the math and said the increase was $2.00 and change that they would refund for this month, because they don’t warn you. Just keep raising the rates. So, for that max rate after 4 years all we get is a voice notice on the system telling us which of the 4 doors opened. Big deal. We now have 9 months to go and no telling what we’ll be paying by that time. NEVER AGAIN! Oh yeah, then we got someone showing up to upgrade our system. That sounded like the scam of all time. Don’t trust them!

    Horrible awful experience!!!!!

    1. Originally installed with Zenith security at our old home. We told when we moved to NOT take our security equipment with us, that they would install NEW equipment in our new house for FREE.
    2. We moved and didn’t get the same equipment in our old house, was told that we would have to pay for it. And that we should have taken our old equipment with us?!!!
    3. We finally re-install and are told we have to sign a NEW 18 month agreement. In ADDITION to our old agreement.
    4. They send a tech to come and install. First, they install the key-pad lock BACKWARDS with the keypad on the inside of the house and the lock on the outside. I have to point this out to them. Then, they leave.
    5. We were out of town and had guests staying at our house. The air conditioning was blasting on high for 5 days when it was 30 degrees outside. They couldn’t get it shutoff and the heat wouldn’t turn on either. He had installed the thermostat completely wrong.
    6. They send the same tech to come back and “fix” the thermostat. He leaves and the air conditioning is still blasting as is the heat. I end up having to hire a professional HVAC company to come professionally install and fix and he is there for almost 2 hours at $90/hr rate.
    7. They won’t reimburse us for this bill.
    8. The keypad lock was never wirelessly installed and doesn’t work with our mobile app so we are unable to unlock/lock the doors with our mobile devices which completely defeats the purpose. To send a tech out to our house to fix this they want to charge us $85.

I could go on and on and on and on about how awful our experience has been. If I could cancel and get out of this I would but of course even with all these awful service we are still locked in. Worst. Company. Ever.

We originally had Security Systems as our home provider. One day we had someone come to our door informing us they were there to upgrade our system (The person at the door had information about us, our names and phone number etc.). We called Security Systems to find they had went out of business and Monotronics had taken over our service. The change had occurred about three months prior and we had never been notified of the change, but the payments were being taken from our account without any brakes.

After being with Monotronics for a few years we changed internet providers, which include our phone line service. After about six months with the change we were going on vacation, so my wife called Monotronics to inform them we were leaving. At that time we found out that our house was not being monitored because of the internet provider change. Monotronics in formed my wife that our contract states we are to call once a month to make sure our service is still active. If you recall when I started this review I said we had Security Systems and never had a contract with Monotronics. When we asked them to cancel our service we went through the same issues that was reported by the person that left the earlier review. We had to pay one additional month plus late fees. We paid because they were calling us twice a day harassing us. I told my wife it was not worth the hassle so we paid them and they left us alone.

Terrible customer service, I never completed a contract with them and STILL get calls over a year later that I owe them money. It’s nearly impossible to talk to a person in customer service, and they are entirely unhelpful.

I would highly recommend against using their services, and opting for a local security team who values security and customer service.

I was a customer from 02/2010-05/2017. Do not bother, keep shopping around. If you are already a customer keep notes. I strongly think if you are paying these ppl to monitor your alarm, do a unexpected test You set off your alarm and wait and see if they will call you as if someone was breaking in your home. If so great, and if not you are not alone!! I was informed that some customers fell through the cracks on being monitored.( I had more issues wrong then I thought) Prior to this I called and called as I had issues, with my alarm getting fixed, as it went off for no reason at 3:15am, I had to call as I didn’t receive one. A tech from 2.5 hrs away was sent to come and fix it and he left knowing nothing was fixed or even a game plan to get it fixed. When I called Moni, no one seemed to care, I was even told do what I feel I need to do then they hung up on me. After 20 days of no service and no one caring, I canceled my service!! 2 THUMBS DOWN, crappy customer service!!

Monitronics is the worst company out there.
    1. Moved, was told that I could move for free, then they charged me.
    2. Added a camera four months ago and it has never worked properly. I have even gotten a new modem and faster internet still doesn’t work. Repeated calls to tech support and repeated visists to my home inconveniencing me repeatedly
    3. Customer service reps and tech support are rude and unknowledgeable.
    4. The local companies that they contract with are unprofessional and unskilled
    5. Incredibly long wait times
    6. Poor quality, cheaply made product
    7. Unwilling or able to resolve issues
    8. RUDE the phone reps are intentionally rude and get away with it.
    Stay away fro this company.

Called to cancel and was offered a much lower rate (about half what we were paying) and
decided to accept the offer which involves another 12-month agreement (contract) …
probably a big mistake. We shall see.

They make canceling service difficult and complicated then continue to bill you for 30+ days after confirming that your service is cancelled. Even when I had them they didn’t warranty the components of the system so when sensors died I was left paying to replace them and figuring out how to install the new one. Definitely was under the impression that was part of the service. Horrible company, I can’t recommend enough that you find someone else.

They are really terrible at all aspects of home security. I can’t comment on response time, but customer service is terrible. The reps that answer the phone are not helpful and are basically droids. Need service on your equipment? Be prepared to wait for at least an hour on the phone only to be serviced by some random company – NOT the company you paid to do the installation. By the way, one guy that came out asked to use my bathroom. Uh I guess? Most pros don’t do that kind of thing. Ridiculous cancellation policy, even after years of being a customer. No information on billing, random charges that show up and you have to call to find out what they are about. Never again.

If there is a negative number in this rating scale, I would choose it. I had terrible experience with this company. I signed a 3 year contract with them and they increase rate every year. When I moved to different location and wanted to cancel the contract, they said no. I had to pay 10 more months for the service that I didn’t use, just to wait till the contract end. Furthermore, the cancellation process is a nightmare. I called them to cancel, and it extended 2 more months after the contract end to get it done. Which mean, I had to pay 12 months total for the goddam service. This company is a robber. People answered the call are very rude and helpless. The way they practice business is immoral.

Many people in the pipe line lying sales people, installers that work for a 3rd party Alliance Security. The business practices that switch the customer from one company to another without prior knowledge. Tread Softly ask plenty of questions as the process is deceptive and misleading.

I have had monitronics service for 5 years. Contract is up and cant stop service. Wrote a letter like they wanted. They responded back with a simple NO we will not stop your service. My only saving grace is that they can not take out of my bank account.. I just get harassing phone calls ever day. I have used Call blocks on my phone.

I would NOT recommend their product. We have had the system for almost 3 years, just waiting for the contract to end so that we can cancel. Over the course of the 3 years, we have had a rate increase each year, which is something that the salesperson forgot to mention that can happen when we signed a 3 year contract. I would have never gone with this company had they made that clear. We had ADT for 4 years before that and never a rate increase. Started with a rate of $54.99, now it is $61. I should have known something was fishy when the salesperson did not want to give me a copy of the contract. It took over a week to get him to email it to me. We have only used dispatch once, and that one time Monitronics charged us a $35 dispatch fee and the police never came out to inspect. Our city’s police department does come out to investigate when alarms go off unless there’s been multiple points of forced entry reported, so having an alarm here is almost pointless. I also don’t fully trust the equipment. One time our smoke alarms that came with the house were alarming from a candle that had caught fire, but the monitronics smoke alarms detected nothing. Another time, we smelled a gas leak from one of the stove knobs being left turned to the on position. Our monitronics CO2 detectors never went off. Hoping that the cancellation process is not a nightmare with this company.

Numerous discussions to cancel this contract which has now expired. I have paid on this for three years and have not used the service one time. I found their sales people very pushy. The discussion to cancel resulted in four conversations of which they kept offering cheaper fees. My last conversation I thought they understood the word “CANCEL” obviously I was wrong. My next choice will be to contact the attorney general office and to close my checking account to cancel their automatic fee withdrawals. Do not deal with these people.

System hasn’t worked in our home. They have come out multiple times and cannot fix, but insist we have a contract so cannot cancel. Basically they are counting on us not suing or investing time to fight them.

I had used adt in the past and had nothing but problems with the equipment and customer service…horrible. All they seemed to do is increase my bill and unable to fix the problems with the system.
I had Monitronix (Moni) come in and they not only were able to fix the old system issues, but, they upgraded it and gave me a lower rate than what adt started with 15yrs ago. I have had Moni for 7 years now and continue to have great service.

If you’ve ever had an alarm sound in the middle of the night……@[email protected]&$&&?&@$&. Just substitute any profanity you see fit. The sensor was loose and a call to Moni produced the most absurd answer. We were told to go buy some two sided tape to secure the sensor. We could count on this happening one to three times a week. These alarms got us an email telling us that there was an alarm. WE KNEW THAT!!!! Long story short; it happened again last night. I spoke with two reps on two different occasions. They offered a lower rate for two months. BIG WOO!!! Not once did they offer to send someone to replace the sensor. What a farce for safety.
